Just Begin

A Race Of Angels - "Just Begin"
Akwasi Mensah, Dego, Theo Parrish - "It's Just Begun"
Review: All has been quiet at Wildheart Recordings since label founders Theo Parrish and Tony Allen inaugurated proceedings with the soulful double drop of Day Like This, which is understandable given their respective touring schedules. Out of nowhere a second release arrives and finds Wildheart looking back but still being forward thinking with a timely reappraisal of a West Coast gem from A Race Of Angels. The recording alias of Yeofi Andoh, A Race of Angels will be familiar to Gifted & Blessed fans for their Steoples work together and his fragile vocal talents is on full display with "Just Begin". Initially released as part of the ArtDontSleep Presents... From L.A. With Love compilation back in 2007, "Just Begin" is a classy slice of minimal songwriting and gets further blessed by a B Side rework featuring the collective talents of Theo, Dego and Akwasi Mensah.

Ernie Ruso - "Stroke It" (3:53)
DJ Nomad - "African Boy" (3:55)
Jona J - "A Change Will Come" (6:25)
Review: Many Hands is a fresh label helmed by Jona Jefferies and Kava that here kicks out an eclectic EP with four tracks from various members of its musical family. Dan Aikido opens with '0800 TXT4 Herb,' a smooth fusion piece that builds a laid-back groove, blending fretless bass, jazzy keys and soulful vocals all reminiscent of Rare Silk's 'Storm.' Ernie Ruso's 'Stroke It' offers slow, sensual r&b infused with P-funky wah-wah effects while DJ Nomad's 'African Boy' brings upbeat pop house next to funky organ and a female reggae MC.Jefferies' closer 'A Change Will Come' samples Dr. Martin Luther King Jr with a rave-inspired beat and soulful piano. Cracking stuff.

Altered Tapes - "The Break Down (Eazy Goes To Memphis)" (3:59)
DJ Platurn - "King Penguin" (Funky beats edit) (4:01)
Review: Chicago's Altered Tapes crew offer up their own unique take on a West Coast gangster rap classic with the A-side of this one on US label Heat Rock. It's the label's seventh outing and places focus on Memphis soul and funk territory. 'The Break Down' is a big, horn led jam with funk beats and crisp rhythms. Reverse this limited 7" to find Oakland's own DJ Platurn. He smashes out a drum heavy, break-heavy edit that pays homage to a cut and paste great. It's funky, filled with vocal samples and mad keys and packs real heat.

Whatcha Trying To Do (To Me)?
Tell Me, Tell Me!
Review: Russian funk alert! Following in the footsteps of fellow country funkers STiX and The Soul Surfers, DJ Anatoly Ice and veteran songstress Dariya deliver two impeccable jams that sizzle with a fuzzy air of 60s nostalgia. Dariya's vocal delivery is crisp, clear and decidedly sexy as she dips into her mother tongue for very brief respites. With punctuated pianos, big swinging drums and a horn ensemble that's tighter than an austerity budget, this is an exemplary lesson in funk.

Freedom (Mr. Confuse remix) (3:42)
Review: It's been almost four years since we last heard from Anatoly Ice and Dariya, and we were beginning to miss the duo's magnetic waves of seductive nu-soul. Backed by a gentle sway of breakbeats, "Freedom (Unchained)" is the sort of tune that will have cross-cultural appeal, drawing in influences from pop, r&b, and even a little country love. On the flip, Mr Confuse twists the groove up to transform the original into more of a light-hearted house swelter, backed by the original's suave vocals.

Bobby Angelle - "I'll Be A Soldier Boy" (3:07)
The M&Ms & The Peanuts - "Lil Valley" (2:55)
Delilah Moor - "I'll Just Walk Away" (2:11)
Review: Kent Soul pays tribute to the seminal LA soul imprint Money with four of its most characteristic cuts. "The Man That Said No" was a follow up to Bettye's breakthrough smash "Don't Wait Too Long". The limited success at the time has driven recent sales high, making this 45" appeal to collectors instantly. Dig deeper for Bobby's super-slamming R&B jam "I'll Be A Soldier Boy". Its debut vinyl appearance, this nods effectively at the northern soul anthem "Too Much For You". Further on we experience doo-wop delight with The M&Ms & The Peanuts' debut single "Lil Valley" before fast-forwarding to the early 70s with the lavish soul of Moore's "I'll Just Walk Away". Money talks.... You'd be wise to listen.

Original Love Injection (feat DJ Snafu)
Original Love Injection (Boca 45 mix)
Review: Original Love Injection is the hotly-anticipated debut release from the Bodybeard Brothers. A Dr Jekyll concept band to the Leisure Allstars' Mr Hyde, the Bodybeard brothers are superhero alteregos, freeing the Allstars to exercise their superpowers. Original Love Injection takes fresh funk loops, reggae vocals, peak-time club energy and makes it swing with a dancefloor swagger, partly with the help of Boy Wonder scratch DJ Snafu, who at just 18 sent a mixtape to hip-hop connection which was described by DJ Yoda as the best he'd heard for a long while. Don't sleep on this kid, he's got plenty of game and he has years to get even better too. On the remix is another Bristol hero, Boca 45. Veteran of the international club circuit and producer of some of the finest funky business to come out of Bristol in many moons, Boca knew he had to get involved when he heard the buzz bass stylings of Original Love Injection emanating from his local dance hall and speakeasy Native, late one saturday night. Boca's stripped things back and taken them to the source of the beats, adding a few horns in for that Boca 45 carnival sound. Feast your ears and your feet will follow.

Review: The eighth volume of the Big M's sample heavy series gives some old school classics the dirty breakbeat treatment. First up sees Breakbeat Junkie and DJP take on Tag Team's "Whoomp! Bentford All Stars - "Greedy G" (3:40)
Dub Specialist - "Granny Scratch Scratch" (3:57)
Review: For the latest in their series of "giant 45s" - loud 12" pressings of classic cuts from the Studio One vaults - Soul Jazz has decided to offer-up a fresh pressing of Brentford All Stars' 'Greedy G'. Based on James Brown classic 'Get On The Good Foot', the track was famously sampled by Boogie Down Productions on their iconic cut 'Jack of Spades'. It remains a bona fide party classic, adding a bass-heavy, Hammond-heavy reggae spin to Brown's insatiable funk groove. As it did the last time Soul Jazz issued it back in 1988, it comes backed with the deeper and more laidback 'Granny Scratch Scratch', another classic cut from Studio One's in-house backing band.

Carol Woods combined to great effect in the 80s on this soul classic that now gets a first-ever single release. Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - "On The Run"
Review: This seven from the Originals label perfectly encapsulates what the series is all about, pairing a track whose elements have been sampled numerous times over with perhaps the best example of how it was musically reinterpreted. Even if you don't know "Up Above The Rock", the title track from the 1968 LP by Philadelphia based jazz pianist and composer Ray Bryant, by name you'll immediately recognise it's distinctive break and piano riff. This latter element was incorporated superbly on the early 90s hip hop cut "On The Run" from Kool G Rap and DJ Polo which lines the B Side, slowed down somewhat but still distinctively the work of Bryant.

Darryl Howard is the vocalist and songwriter of Nu'rons and here he offers up the lead vocals while Emanuel Campbell, who is one of his co-members in Nu'rons, is responsible for the lyrics. Review: More all-action fare from the popular Bomb Strikes label, an imprint that has gradually moved away from the party-hearty mash-ups and bootleg remixes on which it made its name. This tidy seven-inch single is notable for the presence of Bristol crew The Allergies. On the A-side they guest on Andy Cooper's "Why You Buggin", a bustling, funk-fuelled fusion of hip-hop and rock that sounds like a wholehearted tribute to the Beastie Boys circa "Licensed To Ill". Over on the flip the West Country party-starters turn remixers, delivering a head nodding, toe-tapping take on Dr Syntax and Pete Canon's hip-hop/funk/ska fusion number "Downtime". Like the A-side, it sounds like a bona fide dancefloor bomb.

Inspired by the city's energy and atmosphere, he crafted Togenkyo, a 28-minute fusion of early 2000s folktronica and contemporary ambient music that now comes as two long continuous pieces on one slab of vinyl. Only five copies of the original 7" single have surfaced to date, with the most recent changing hands for eye-watering sums of money. You can see why Fryer was so excited by "Let Your Light Shine": while rooted in both funk and soul, the track also draws heavily on psychedelic rock and the fuzzy, funk-rock fusion brilliance of Sly Stone. Original B-side "Somebody Help Me" is an altogether more laidback affair, with Dale offering impassioned and melancholic lyrics over a psychedelic era take on old rhythm & blues ballads.

The synth funk pioneer's sounds never seem more fitting than when cruising about on an early summer evening, top down (at least in your mind) with the sky turning burnt orange. He soundtracks that moment four more times here with 'Rise' being a more downbeat and pensive vibe, then 'Make It' getting a little more playful on the bump-n-grid beats and squelchy boogie bass. Dam Funk - "3012 Luv Affair"
Computer Jay - "Phantom"
Computer Jay - "Vice"
Computer Jay - "Rare Type"
Review: Round seven of All City's highly collectable ten inch series drops with perhaps the most impressive pairing to date. Dam Funk needs little introduction to anyone with a passing interest in fine music, and the Stones Throw funkateer displays all his unique talent on the two tracks that plaster the A Side. It's easy to visualise the woozy synth led snap of "Night Stroll" sound tracking a twilight sojourn through the hilly surrounds of Silverlake LA. Complementing this is the low slung sexx funk of "3012 Luv Affair", with Dam in full on organ wig-out mode. On the flip Computer Jay drops three tracks of heavy percussive heat with opener "Phantom" betraying the punk-funk intro with a spectral beatdown characterised by reverberant breaks. "Vice" showcases Jay's ease with intricate drum programming and is augmented by a fuzzed out 8 bit melody, while the oscilatting analogue drama of "Rare Type" proves to be brilliantly different.

DaM-FunK - "Believer" (Fingers deep funk remix) (8:40)
Nite-Funk - "Can U Read Me?" (3:38)
Review: Damon Garrett Riddick offered a fine addition to the DJ Kicks canon with his 19 track DaM-Funk selection earlier this and in time honoured tradition his exclusive contribution gets a vinyl release backed with a rather special remix. In a nod to his cache and love of classic deep house, Riddick has coaxed a Mr Fingers remix out of Larry Heard resulting in a sublime take on "Believer" that would have gone down a treat at Broken Beat haven Co-Op back in the day. Instead of the original version of "Believer," the flip features another Riddick original from the DJ Kicks mix - his killer Nite Funk collaboration with fellow LA synthesizer enthusiast Nite Jewel.

Fine Fine (4:08)
Red Light (Peter Solo) (3:35)
Review: An instantly recognisable voice in the funk sphere for over 60 years, you can't talk about Togolese music with mentioning the funkmaster and 'King of Gazo' himself Roger Damawuzan. Containing an unreleased single from his upcoming album 'Seda', this double single is funk so heavy it'll weigh you down. 'Fine Fine' is a slick and fast-paced track of contentment - leave the man alone he said he's fine! - and 'Red Light' is a squeaky clean showcase of what made Damawuzan so popular in Togo with his carefree and charismatic attitude. All you funk lovers out there have got to give this a spin.

In My Life (3:37)
Review: Dallas based singer-songwriter Derek Damian recorded the gloriously life-affirming soul nugget 'Watcha Wanna Do' a decade ago. It has lost none of its charm or magic all these years later as this new pressing attests. The rolling grooves, the effortlessly epic vocals and the serene string all ooze class. On the flip, he gets more romantic with the perfectly tender and intimate 'Never Felt So Good.' It's beefed up by bold baritone vocals, contemporary R&B production and gooey bass. A killer 45 for sure.

Afro Stomp

To Fela's People (feat Villy) (9:54)
Baba (5:47)
Afro Stomp (6:25)
Review: Southern Italian sort Giovanni Damico has been in a good run of form of late, as anyone who picked up his recent EP on Lumberjacks in Hell with confirm. This retro-futurist three-track excursion is rather fine, too, with the White Rabbit Recordings founder brilliantly joining the dots between jaunty Afrobeat, rubbery boogie and spacey electrofunk. All three tracks boast classic Afro-funk guitars, with killer A-side "To Fela's People (featuring Villy)" also boasting punchy horns, tactile synth bass and some life-affirming hip-hop rhymes. Over on the flip, "Baba" is a more traditional Afrobeat workout - albeit with the addition of some mind-altering analogue bass and vintage synth flourishes - while "Afro Stomp" is a bouncy, Baldelli-inspired chunk of Afro-cosmic disco.

Review: Italian producer Giovanni Damico has always put plenty of effort into making his sounds come alive with lush, rich melodies whatever genre he's making. Now it is Afro and disco grooves that power this EP, with more of those majestic chords. They have a retro feel here - with tinniness and old-school futurism embraced over elastic and acrobatic beats and bass. 'Watch Out' is a party starter to kick off then there are more lazy and sleazy jams like 'Nowhere' and there twisted electronics of 'Voodoo' bring plenty of invention and a variety of vivacious sounds to this EP.

Chez Damier - "Speechless" (Chez Damier Panorama Bar remix) (5:04)
Makez - "Rocket Music" (5:15)
Alkalino - "Rio" (Alkalino rework) (5:30)
Gledd - "Sere Yo" (5:31)
Review: Adeen Records returns with a superb EP that blends a classic with three new and fresh unreleased tracks. Deep house don Chez Damier's Panorama Bar Remix kicks off and is a a 2021 standout with a killer baseline and Spanish guitar that brings some sunny soul and makes for some top level house grooves. Makez then shines with 'Rocket Music' which has a chunky low end and glistening, golden piano chords making it a late night favourite. On the B-side, Adeen regular Alkalino delivers a tropical-infused edit for the peak time and Gledd closes with a classy cut 'Sere Yo' that is all about the drums. Lovely stuff.
