Arapu - "A2a Cu R"
Dubsons - "Vezuviu"
Faster - "De Ce"
Costy & Gerardo - "Dulapa"
Review: Hailing from the new and mysterious Vara label, this four track double pack makes a bold statement about the intentions of the label, offering a decidedly ambitious product for a second release populated by relatively unknown producers. Lucky then that all the tracks on the release are worthy of their own side of wax as they plumb the depths of minimal tech house with fearless abandon. Arapu keeps the beat twitchy as he lets globulous sub bass design provide the warmth in the track, while Dubsons get into a lighter frame of mind with a breezy beat and atmospheric swirls of chord. Faster brings things back to a darker context with that fearful clang of church bells and plenty of decay and reverb around to fill in any untoward gaps, leaving it to Costy & Gerardo to finish the deal with a stoutly stripped down, cyclical burner for the deepest of dancefloor contemplators to get lost in.

Mierea Dor - "Hummingbird" (8:07)

Ikuto - "Alacrity" (8:04)
Faster - "Back Room" (7:47)
Review: UVAR's first LTD compilation, which appeared in the spring of 2017, was something of a runaway success, so the Romanian label has decided to do it all over again. Like its predecessor, this second serving is jam-packed with club-ready tech-house treats, from the deep space electronics, sampled children's voices and undulating drums of CSR and Argetic Brito's "Abadia" and rolling, ever-building dreaminess of Ada Kaleh's "Aum Trai Si Aum Vedea", to the low-slung, acid-flecked trip that is Mierea Dor's "Hummingbird" and deep space throb of Ikuto's "Alarcity". There's perhaps a little more of a sci-fi feel to this one, as if most of the producers have been gorging on old Motor City techno records, but the beats remain tactile and tech-house focused.

East End Dubs & Rich NxT - "Delicut" (7:46)
East End Dubs & Cuartero - "Static Sea" (6:59)
Review: The unstoppable East End Dubs launches yet another vinyl series here: introducing the first edition of the Collaborations series which features the label chief teaming up with some of the biggest names in tech house. Four cuts on this one: on the A side you've got 'Stargaze' in conjunction with Mannheim's Fabe (Salty Nuts) where they serve up some minimal boompty-funk, while C1 is with the ever reliable Sidney Charles on the hypnotic swing of 'Mental Stealth'. On side D is where it gets serious, on the moody, heads-down groove of 'Delicut' with fellow Londoner Rich NxT, and ending with the infectious afterhours bounce of 'Static Sea' with the ascendant Cuartero.

Review: This slow-burning minimal-deep house track (think Mr. G) has all the hallmarks of a seasoned classic, but it's actually a brand new track from the dream pair that is Ralph Falcon and Victoria Wilson James. Following up the underground hit that was 'I Need Someone', Nervous Records give patronage to the pair's follow-up here, along with four saucy speed garage and funky house versions by Dennis Quin, Oscar G 305 and Tenere.

Fever Ray - "Shiver" (Ivory remix) (6:22)
Unknown Artist - "Track 2" (7:36)
Review: Ame's Innervisions label has joined forces with Philomena here for a 15th release in its series. This one kicks off with an Ivory remix of Fever Ray's 'Shiver.' The leftfield electronic artist who is also part of The Knife has a distinctive voice, to say the least, and that shines out here as shimmering chords radiant around it and over a proggy groove. The flip side offers up and unknown artist with 'Track 2' which has a familiarr vocal left to hang in the air above a cold, snappy tech rhythm. It's the sort of quietly anthemic cut Ame are known for dropping at special moments.

Zurich-Valencia Crossing (with Aron) (9:39)
Review: Valencia's Alex Font returns on his very own Acme imprint for its ninth release titled Cooperation One and like its name suggests collaboration is key. On the first side, he teams up with newcomer Nayve on the haunting and arcane atmosphere of 'Laudes' which will appeal to fans of early Sepp and Nu Zau or more recently, Pirvu. This is followed by the etheral Rominimal style bounce of 'Understood'. Over on the flip 'Felices Los 3' (with Vadim Oslov & Saav) again ventures into brooding and abstract territory, while "Zurich-Valencia Crossing" (with Aron) ends things on a more upbeat note on this sunny and emotive tech house cut.

Review: Tech house is an unfairly maligned genre. While criticisms of the blandness of the sound might hold weight for much of the stuff released today, the same simply can't be said for the work of Terry Francis, who helped pioneer its sound. All & All is a new series, this one documenting Francis' contributions to the underground, with many of the tracks appearing on it made during the period in which he was a resident DJ at London's Fabric. As you can hear, 'tech house' at the origin point, as propagated by Francis, was much dreamier - closer to its cousin, deep house. And on cuts like 'How Can Something', you can really hear where the received 'dreaminess' of house and the uptempo, industrial pulse of techno, converged.

Contrary (5:30)
Review: Frankey & Sandrino return to their house roots with their latest EP 'Love Complete' on the Sum Over Histories label. Released on their own imprint, the EP captures the essence of the early 2000s dance musical zeitgeist, blending classic soulful house vibes with a modern production sheen, defined by an ultra-clean, untainted synthetic palette. Having reunited with singer Charlotte Riby, who also featured on their acclaimed track 'Memories' for Innervisions, the pair dare to deliver a delectable duo of ditties here, drumming up moods of conjugal anticipation and dreams of fulfilment on 'Love Complete', while a vibeshift makes itself apparent in terser form on 'Contrary', which plays back a more weightless and green-roomed sound by comparison.

Review: Now well over its 200th release, Hot Creations remains one of the house scene's most recognisable labels. In that time it has done a fine job of evolving its sound and staying relevant, not least to singing newer artists such as label heads Jones and Foss do here. Bruno Furlan harks back to the heyday of Latin and stringy minimal made famous by Cadenza's Luciano on 'Bongoloco'. It's a jam that teases with its percussive lines drawn out and woven into rolling beats, while 'Vai' is a little more full-fat and dubby. Both are sure to be huge this summer season.

Review: Ultimo Tango are feeling the current trance-powered moment with this killer VA split release, which opens in style with the proto-typical 1990 throbber 'That's The Choice' from Italian duo Q Words. Needle originally released the A2 track 'I.J.O.' in 1994, when the trance sound was more firmly established, but that doesn't stop this highly-desired track from happily skipping between house-minded uplift, technoid exploration as well as trancey immersion. F*O*X released 'Once More' in 1993 - another one-shot project lovingly gathered up and revived on this essential record for any Italo-trance devotees looking to avoid monumental secondhand prices.

Review: Sasha has done well to re-establish himself with the next generation, and its largely because of the work he puts into his Last Night On Earth label. A haven for producers who like emotionally stripping, melodic sounds, this latest VA package delves into the previously digital-only archives. The boss himself kicks things off with a collab with La Fleur built on a wavy baseline and crisp house rhythm. Fur Coat keep things more mysterious with "Babel" while Hunter/Game keep you in suspense throughout the many melodic and harmonica layers of "Canyons". Jon Da Silva & Jozef K close things down in more purposeful fashion.

Review: Brawther and Tristan Da Cunha's Dungeon Meat deals only in rock-solid house cuts designed for maximum club impact. Their Weapons Of Ass Destruction series is a treasure trove of such sounds and the fourth volume is another doozy: Sweely kicks off with some rubbery tripped-out tech, Frederik Anthony spins out on silky and deft percussive tech on 'Shortbacknsides' and Timmy P's 'Your Parents Are Doing It Right Kev' is a drake heavier stomper for when things get freaky. Boss Priester offers another highlight with the industrial and cosmic tech of 'Today Okay' while JAMM's 'Ignition' is more high-class weaponry.

Review: After a couple of quiet years Ferro's VBX label returns with a bang, as the esteemed Dutch minimal producer links up with none other than Ricardo Villalobos for a run of 'Ferric' jams. Enlightened souls should have some idea of what to expect here, as Ferro's snappy grooves collide with Villalobos' meandering sound collages to create psychoactive termites geared towards twisting out the dancefloor good and proper. This is proper minimal, with the percussion chiselled into fine clicks and pops to leave more space for the trippy elements to weave their magic. The quality comes assured from this new pairing, hopefully paving the way for more collaborations in the future.

Review: It's no surprise that Hardworksoftdrink hail from the same town as the infamous Robert Johnson club. Unbeknownst to the more commercial end of the club spectrum, Offenbach is a centre for German underground music and has been so for the last thirty years. Frankfurt might get all the praise, but its this town on the outskirts of the financial capital that's grown the scene year on year. The small independent label are carving their name into the region's history, thanks to a close-knit group of producers, and this latest EP from Cedric Dekowski and Felix Reifenberg is a perfect example of the sort of freeform hedonism that has been at the core of the hub. Through glitchy, wayward beat constructions all filtered through a distinctive house edge, this duo are very much doing their own thing; no fillers and absolutely no gimmicks from start to finish. A class act.

Review: Given that Fabian Winkels has enjoyed a particularly productive year, it seems fitting that he should round off the year with his most expansive and significant release to date. "Water Tower" marks his full-length debut and it's a wide-ranging and musically adventurous one. After beginning with the bass-heavy, piano-laden peak-time snap of title track "Water Tower", Winkels variously turns his house to hip-house influenced hypno-house ("Hoch Wie Nie"), sub-bass-propelled tech-house warmth ("Martha & Henry"), deeper and more spacey club grooves ("Words From Millie", the bleeping heaviness of "Reason") and jazzier peak-time workouts ("Multi Lost", tasty closing cut "Green Top"). The result is a fine collection of club cuts to bring 2018 to a close.

"Blizzards" is in some ways similar to the melodious and inventive trademark sound he's been crafting over the last 15 years - think bold electronic melodies, unsettling and off-kilter chords, curious noises, and occasional rhythms that sit somewhere between IDM and ambient techno - yet at times it feels more fuzzy and forthright than usual. So amongst the relaxed and slowly shifting soundscapes and quirky electronica you'll find a number of bustling club cuts, with "Stepping Stone", "Vectra" and the surging, sparking "Eris & Dysnomia" standing out.

Review: Nathan Fake returns with his long awaited third LP. Steam Days is pitched almost directly between the pastoral sounds of his debut Drowning In A Sea Of Love and the razor-edged, abrupt Hard Islands. Some tracks are pushed through sharp, angular rhythmic shapes, such as the strobing bass of "Harnser" or the abrasive "A World of Spectrum", which utilises steam powered, clockwork rhythms, while some show his knack for soft-focus melodies, such as the wistful, radiophonic "Paean", and the washed out trance of "Sad Vember".

Originally released on Klang Elektronik and now reissued by Jelinek's own Faitiche label, Textstar is a masterpiece of glitchy sample-based electronics with a subtle, implied funk. In some ways the sound has dated - it's very much of the late 90s-early 00s era it was first crafted in. But it's a sound that still engrosses and intrigues, reveling in microscopic detail and subdued moods while retaining a groove that comes through the best on eternally magnificent cut 'Beautone'.

Review: With nearly 40 years experience as a producer, having collaborated with everyone from Holger Hiller, Moritz Von Oswald and Juan Atkins among others, Swiss legend Thomas Fehlmann presents Los Lagos ('The Lakes'). It's his seventh solo full-length (and fourth for Koelsch institution Kompakt), following his Berlin inspired 2010 LP Gute Luft. The multi-talented composer and long standing member of The Orb embarked on a deep journey of soul searching while recording the album - and in the process incorporated elements of art, disco, minimalism, jazz and funk. A collection of glacial and textural dub introversions as best exemplified on "Lowenzahnzimmer" or "Morrislouis", but he also makes room for moments of pulsating hypnotic dancefloor dynamics ("Triggerism") and moments of lush ambient bliss reminiscent of his work with Dr. Alex Patterson on "Geworden".

Review: For his third full-length for the constantly enduring Kompakt label, Axel Willner has decided to take his enduring brand of Balearic loop techno to grandiose new heights. Sonically, the template remains the same - intoxicating layers of guitar, voice and ambient synth loops atop hypnotic dancefloor grooves - but the resultant tracks are just, well, bigger - cinematic, even. Given Willner's inherent skill at producing this kind of baggy, organic techno, the results are rarely less than impressive. As a result, Looping State of Mind makes for thoroughly enjoyable listening, simultaneously appearing ambitiously big and pleasantly intimate. He deserves enormous credit for pulling it off.

Review: Floating Points, also known as Sam Shepherd, returns with a new album that pushes his sound even further into exciting new territories. This album, consisting of eight tracks, offers expansive explorations of sounds and grooves, with each piece allowed to develop and evolve over up to eight minutes. Nearly a decade after his acclaimed debut Elaenia, Shepherd continues to blend his experimental inclinations with dancefloor appeal, a fusion that has become a hallmark of his style. Cascade is conceived as a follow-up to Shepherd's rave-reviewed second studio album, Crush from 2019. While Crush introduced listeners to Shepherd's more introspective side, Cascade aims to bring the traditional Floating Points experience back to the dancefloor. Bursting with Buchla rhythms and glitching melodies, it should be more in line with his dance singles. Shepherd describes the album as a continuation, which is reflected in the vibrant artwork by Akiko Nakayamaia colourful sleeve with fluid imagery that mirrors the album's dynamic soundscapes. The album's evocative title, Cascade, suggests movement, beauty and pressure, themes that resonate throughout its paces.

Review: The fifth Flaoting Points album Cascade is a culmination of creative evolution. In late 2022, Shepherd found himself in the California desert, crafting a new sonic journey via his acclaimed Promises, where he ventured into airy dreamscapes with saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra, earning a Mercury Prize nomination and a sold-out Hollywood Bowl show in 2023. With Cascade, Shepherd returns to his electronic roots, craving the pulse-racing communion of the dancefloor. This album serves as a sequel to Crush, diving deeper into ravey, experimental realms, unexplored due to lockdown cancellations. Tracks draw inspiration from Manchester's record shops and California's desert landscapes, blending Buchla rhythms and glitching melodies. Shepherd's journey, from orchestral collaborations to laptop productions, underscores his relentless pursuit of innovation.

Review: Between 2000 and 2002, Roman Flugel's Tracks on Delivery EP series helped usher in a new era of minimal techno - one built on little more than hypnotic drum machine rhythms and druggy electronic noises. This essential triple-album tells the story of the series, offering up remastered versions of all 15 tracks included on the four 12" singles to date. As you'd expect, it's mostly a collection of surging, stripped-back and mind-mangling techno cuts, but there are also some decent deviations into crunchy club electro and fuller-sounding peak-time workouts. This edition also boasts two previously unreleased tracks recorded during the same period: the super-trippy 'Pattern 16' and the Andrew Weatherall/Blood Sugar-influenced 'Pattern 17'.

Review: Given the length of his career, it's perhaps surprising that this is Roman Flugel's first album under his own name. Fatty Folders finds him in fine form, building on the success of his recent Dial 12" singles via a series of cuts that largely show him at the peak of his powers. While there are nods to some of his more celebrated deep house and hypnotic techno productions, Fatty Folders is musically far more playful than much of his output. At times it sounds like Flugel's take on early Orbital, at others more like a typically Teutonic fusion of Detroit futurism and Plone-ish synthscapes. Most satisfyingly, it remains thoroughly entertaining throughout. Flugel-funk anyone?

Review: Roman Flugel has stayed at the top of his game for nearly 20 years because he possesses the uncanny knack of reinvention. On this release for Hypercolor, he manages to stretch that diversity out over the course of six tracks. From the glorious melodies of "Teenage Engineering" through the rolling 808s of "Church of Dork", the gushing acid tones of "Make it Happen" into the sublime deep techno of "Picnic for Players", this release covers more ground than an Argentinean scrum-half. Monday Brain is one of the most well-rounded and stylistically assured records that the veteran German DJ has released to date - and that's really saying something.

Review: Many would argue that Roman Flugel has been making All The Right Noises for the best part of two decades. Certainly, the prolific German producer's vast catalogue boasts way more hits than misses, with this latest full-length - his third for Dial - being amongst his strongest work to date. After beginning with the slow burning, late night ambience of "Fantasy", the former Alter Ego producer gently raises the tempo throughout, moving from the off-kilter, experimental techno hypnotism of "Dead Idols" and sparse, out-there dancefloor moodiness of "Warm & Dewy", to the ghostly house shuffle of "All The Right Noises", and John Carpenter-meets-Black Dog creepiness of "Planet Zorg". Throughout, it's hugely thoughtful and atmospheric.

Morning Side (20:11)
Evening Side (19:38)
Review: Keiran Hebden rarely does things by halves, though it's still surprising to find that Morning/Evening, his eighth full-length, consists of two contrasting 20-minute explorations, each inspired by a time of day. "Morning" is, as you may expect, warm, bright and evocative, with intoxicating Eastern vocals, dreamy chords and various bursts of melodious instrumentation riding a rolling, jazz-flecked, soft touch deep house groove. It is, of course, intensely beautiful. Hebden largely disposes of the beats entirely on "Evening", delivering 15 minutes of picturesque electronic melodies and sunset-friendly ambience, before introducing a jazz-flecked house rhythm for the final five minutes. It, too, is a thing of great beauty

Review: There are not too many house and techno labels in the United States that can boast quite the discography and international success that the Brooklyn based Scissor & Thread label can. For over a decade now, the busy label has kept the quality up to the high standards the label set when starting. A big part of that quality is having Frank & Tony on board through the label's history. Ethos is their new full-length album that, spread across a double pack of wax, with tracks mostly kept under close guard, except the opener 'Olympia'. Make no mistake though, from the rumours and whispers we've heard already, it looks like being a big hit.
