Crazy Kind Of Feeling (DJ Duckcomb Discomix) (7:47)
Review: The always cultured Emotional Rescue kicks of the first of what will be a series of reissue sou the music of young Michael Ashley aka Haile Maskel. He hailed from Trenchtown in Jamaica and grew up singing, learning guitar and bass, redoing under the tutelage of Bob Marley early on. Here his soul drenched reggae is offered dup with 'Crazy Kind Of Feeling', a unique track with horns and big bass but also a subtle disco energy. Next to a dub take, Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb serves up a mix that embellishes on the disco elements.

Crazy Kind Of Feeling (7" mix) (4:20)
Crazy Kind Of Feeling (dub take 2) (5:11)
Review: The great thing about Emotional Rescue's deep dive into reggae and lovers rock is that the tracks they decide to press up are the ear-snagging curveballs that present something just a little bit to the left of purist, trad reggae. That's the case once again with 101 Band's 'Crazy Kind Of Feeling' - a curio from Haile Maskel released via his own, LA-based label Opulence (Sound). It's a hybrid kind of sound, sitting somewhere between boogie, island funk and roots, and it goes down very smoothly indeed. On this reissue, you get treated to the original 7" mix plus an alternative 'Dub Take 2' version which stretches out over an extended run time on the B-side.

Review: Here is the second single on Skankin' Society, a new sub label of Geneva's Fruits Records. 'Stamp 'N' Go' by Antonin Chatelain and Mathias Liengme (aka The 18th Parallel) is instrumental ska with a roots feel. A horns line that will stay in your head, with the addition of mind-blowing solos by talented musicians such as Anthony Dietrich Buclin, Michael Borcard and Alexandre Schneiter, not to mention the legendary Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace on the drums. The B side features an alternative filter mix by Roberto Sanchez.

Al Andalus
Praise Dub
Review: IBR001, 'Al-Andalus' is a perfect example of the Mediterranean sound being developed by 23Hz + Numaestro. Starting with a vocal
sample from Moroccan music, the introduction is joined by an accordion type riff - curiously sounding not too dissimilar to Augusto Pablo's
distinctive melodica sound - which leads to the drop. Here a massive sub-bass with stabbing mid-frequencies enters the fray, which drives
the track along with skanking half-step beats which have plenty of spring-reverbed snares and slicing hats. The heavily effected sampled
voice is placed in the mix to give extra atmosphere whilst the opening riff leads us to a semi-drop which leaves just the sub before
proceeding to a false drop before the riff and sample are introduced once again which finally take the track into its homestretch. This track
oozes distinctive character and is guaranteed to smash the dancefloor as well as provide a deep meditative vibe. Road tested by Numaestro
on dubplate, it has levelled dances right across Spain and beyond, as well as being picked up by many of the DJs on Sub FM and figuring
in many of the top tens of DJs in the dubstep community over recent months. You are advised not to sleep on this one.
Starting with a vocal sample from Algerian music - a short introduction leads to the drop. Then a rampaging descending scale bass line
comes into play, set against tight stepping swinging beats. This track is built around the b-line and beats which are given junglesque details.
High strings and atmospheric fx, together with the vocal sample are spliced into the tune to give texture. The tune works through another drop
and then proceeds to a breakdown. After which the bass line is reversed - designed to surprise the dancefloor - before returning to the
original groove and final climax. This is an exercise in energetic bass n beats, referencing early jump -up jungle [without any of its
predictable excesses] and two-step swing - given the trademark 23Hz+Numaestro Mediterranean twist. A real goodtime club banger
- this tune has been a fixture in Numaestro's DJ sessions proving to be a crowd favourite.

Review: A Mountain of One pair off in a versus battle with dub maestro and longtime studio wizard Dennis Bovell for new dub versions of 'Custard's Last Stand.' This is the first new music from A Mountain of One in a decade and it marks the inaugural release on their new AMORE label. This tune was recorded over Skype during the pandemic and shows that the pairing of Mo Morris and Zeben Jameson and have lost nothing since we last heard from them - it is snaking atmospheric, deep dub with plenty of heady pads and cinematic designs. Tenyue (aka Matic) has and continues to record with some of the greatest reggae recording artists, and is a sought after musician and producer. Russ D In Front Room Studio - "Inflation" (Dubwise) (2:57)
Review: Italian label Dig This Way serves up a third sizzling offering, this time featuring Nigerian singer Peter Abdul. He does his heart aching work over a solid rhythm from Abeng's Musical Box and the results are steeped in romance and yearning. A flip side dub from Russ Disciple is also well worth checking for its smart effects and fathom deep bass. Abdul is a relative unknown but for his 1984 album Get Down With Me, which head in a more boogie and funk direction. Regardless, this is a tasty dub, make no mistake.

Review: The studio of Harry J's in Jamaica has turned out another pair of belters here. This limited edition and hand-numbered 7" features two killer 1969 tunes. The first is a bittersweet roots tune with a lead trumpet that does all the work. It's in conversation with the organ below and as they to and fro, expressing their pair, the bass rumbles and the percussion jangles. As well as that standout from Richard Ace, the flip-side has a super rare tune 'Candy Lady' by Hugh Black & George Ferris. It's another earthy tune with lovestruck vocals.

Review: This hidden gem from 1975 was self-released on Glen Adams' Capo label out of Brooklyn, New York. 'Stay Dread' rather flies under the radar but is a must-listen, especially the outer limits version on the flip which is a brilliantly psychedelic dub with a mad cosmic lead that takes you into all new realms. The original is a great example of reggae's raw energy and experimental spirit with Adams' distinct vocal style adding a unique touch to proceedings. The rare original has become a sought-after find for reggae heads so do not sleep on this reissue which is unpolished yet powerful.

Dread At The Controls
Review: Adesse Versions' second release combines a touch of Baile Funk with some classic Balearic samples, a touch of Dance Mania and deep, liquid house pads from the heart of Detroit. This can mostly be said for the A-side's "Color Talkin", while there's a stripped back alternative in "Drums Talkin". Not content with the one alternative there's a drum machine heavy rework of both tunes in "Leaving The '90s" while there's argument to be had that "Dread At The Controls" is a Jamaican riddim version made for a hot summer's dancefloor.

Burkina Faso (Wagadugu Blues)
Burkina Faso (Wagadugu dub)
Burkina Faso (Jura Soundsystem Discodub)
Review: Emotional Rescue can be relied on to dig up obscure, left of centre dance gems and serve them up to newer, wider audiences. Adu's reggae-pop cut 'Burkina Faso' is a great example, re-purposed for the dancefloor without any of its original flavour lost in the overhaul. A
South Saharan/West African emigre to Brixton, Rauf Adu would go on to fairly sizeable European fame with the Eddy Grant-esque 'Human To Human'. This, however, is his 1982 debut for Copasetic Records, another reggae-pop inspired, ludicrously catchy effort with scorched electric guitar and a Compass Point-style drum/bassline providing rhythmic rocksteadiness. As well as the buffed up original, there's a dub mix, which gives his beautiful guitar plenty of room to breathe, and an appearance from the Isle of Jura Sound System boss Kevin Griffiths , whose remix completes the trio of mixes.

Review: African Nightlife is a pair of Dutch producers who cook up some intriguing and hugely original material back in the mid-nineties. Opener "4Rest" is a melange of drunken synths and hurried drums with tribal claps that sounds like little else, "Brubaker's Slide" and "Brubaker's Skank" is dub in the style of Adrian Sherwood, and closer "Make Up Your Mind" is a dark, pressurised and bass heavy rhythm detailed with myriad effects and percussive sounds that are bleak and otherworldly. That these tracks are all more than 20 years old is hard to believe because they still very much sound from the future.

Vibronics - "Beautiful Dub" (3:48)
Review: Italian label 4Weed Music is all about music you might want to smoke to, as the title suggests. It's an ever-expanding indie that deals in serious sound system, dub and bass tackle. This new one 'Wonderful was originally produced on the Japan riddim which was composed and arranged by Dread Lion Hi Fi following Japan's 2011 T?hoku Earthquake and the ensuing tidal wave that struck. He wrote it in Italy and it features the line "From Milano Italy to Tokyo Japan" in honour of that over hefty low ends, steely mid-range leads and ricochetting hits. A fat dub is found on the B-side of this release which was for years thought lost until a hard disk turned up the treasure.

Everybody Suffering (2:34)
Review: This double A-side is a timely reissue of two gems from Laurel Aitken that were originally released back in 1969. Cuban-born Jamaican singer Aitken is considered to be one of the pioneers of ska music in Jamaica. He left us in 2005 but had already amassed a hefty discography that stretched to more than 230 singles. Two of them here show his different sides - the first is the impassioned and yearning sound of slow motion cut 'Landlords & Tenants' which muses on the pressures of island life. The seance, despite the title of 'Everybody Suffering' is an upbeat, rump-wiggling jam to get a party started.

Review: Laurel Aitken has got plenty of essential singles in his discography but this Benwood Dick / Apollo 12" is one of the most desirable of them all. It was originally issued in 1969, but only a pre-release, with the full thing cancelled. That has made it rare as hens teeth, but rightly so. The suggestive lyrics might not sit well with every in today's climate but the riddim itself is faultless. It's carried by heavy bassline, as is the flip, which is a skinhead referencing tune that has achieved cult status. Pressed on eco-vinyl and remastered for this reissue, don't miss out.

It has never before been released and has had a long maturation period over the last 30 years. Review: Monty Alexander's 'Love & Happiness,' it might not surprise you to learn, is a cover version of the great Al Green's 'Love & Happiness.' He hooked up with Ernest Ranglin for the occasion and the pair laid it down in 1974, two years after the original came out, with super slick jazz-funk fusion over a reggae tinged beat. The original chords are recognisable, but the whole track i such more mellifluous and bright, the golden chords oozing warmth and the rolling rhythm getting you feeling all snuggly and loved up. Definitely worth a place in your collection.

They were essentially made up of the same group of musicians which included Vin Morgan, Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace, Bagga Walker, Cedric Brooks and Pablove Black. Review: Alpha and Omega's 'Shashamani' was first featured on a 1996 long player called Voice in the Wilderness. It's an ice-cold dub with a fathom-deep low end and hypnotic if muted lead melody that snakes its way between the heavy drums. It's a cavernous atmosphere that sounds as fresh now as ever. It has never been backed with this unheard B-side dub before, either, so is an extra special one to add to the racks as that dub goes extra melon-twisting with more punch in the kicks and hissing hi-hats leaving long tails.

Review: Alpha & Omega is a legendary dub duo and despite them having many superb sounds to their credit, this one is a real standout. 'One Culture' pens with heavy bass as you would expect, but the alluring Indian vocal up top is even more hypnotic. It has a transcendental feel and is soulful and smoky while warped synths rumble away beneath the dusty drums. It's a real mental trip. On the flip is 'One Prayer' which is paired right back to dubby rhythms and subtle vocals are smudged and smeared throughout. Both of these are perfect for lazy Sunday afternoons in the sun.

Tune Up Ska (3:16)
Time Is Ska Tight (Aternative take) (3:53)
Review: While this record looks and sounds vintage - like the majority of Original Gravity's output - it is in fact a revivalist, turn-of-the-60s style ska production from Welwyn Garden City's Neil Anderson. A-side 'Tune Up Ska' is particularly potent, with Anderson and his studio musicians serving up a classic ska groove (think walking bass, up-tempo rhythm and blues drums and tight horn blasts), onto which a variety of fuzzy saxophone and organ solos are layered. Clubs may not be open right now, but when they do, we can see it lighting up ska-loving crowds. Over on the flip, Anderson and company turn their attention (sorry) to Booker T & The MG's cut 'Time is Tight', reinventing it as a boisterous, horn-heavy affair featuring some superb trumpet solos.

Althea & Donna - "Uptown Top Ranking" (3:55)
Joe Gibbs & The Professionals - "Calico Suit" (3:43)
Review: Althea & Donna combined to beautiful effect on the Joe Gibbs label here with a tune that very much remains an iconic reggae anthem. It was originally released in 1977 and effortlessly captured the spirit of Jamaican music of the day with its irresistible blend of ska, rocksteady and reggae influences. Althea & Donna's stylish vocals are paired with expert production that is full of catchy hooks and neat riffs. The clever lyrics and upbeat rhythm mean it still sounds like a hit as it did back when it did well on the UK charts.

Altone - "Night Drama" (Gradient Reshape) (7:14)
Review: There's a beautifully symmetrical aesthetic to the latest Lempuyang release that totally mirrors the impeccably positioned and delicately balanced sounds going on in the grooves. Two of the most consistent producers of the last few years - Altone and Gradient - produce creatively related tracks, the former named 'Day Drama' and the latter taking on 'Night Drama'. Then they hand their respective tracks over to each other for remixing duties and bingo, a pretty vital 12" is created, a gorgeous set of shimmering dubs on the A-side, and some heavyweight business for dark rainy nights on the flip. Both producers employ a modern day dub flavour to their minimal, moody techno, with it probably being fair to say that the influence of Maurizio and the Basic Channel label is fairly significant in the worlds of both. Altone's sound is a little grittier and seemingly fizzing with radioactivity, decaying and disintegrating as each offering proceeds, where there's something a bit more spartan and linear about Gradient's grooves, that seem to undulate and reverberate almost invisibly, propelling these exceptionally mixable, enjoyable DJ tools along almost under their own momentum. Nice work all round.
