Wonderful World

Afrikan Simba - "Wonderful World" (3:48)
Vibronics - "Beautiful Dub" (3:48)
Review: Italian label 4Weed Music is all about music you might want to smoke to, as the title suggests. It's an ever-expanding indie that deals in serious sound system, dub and bass tackle. This new one 'Wonderful was originally produced on the Japan riddim which was composed and arranged by Dread Lion Hi Fi following Japan's 2011 T?hoku Earthquake and the ensuing tidal wave that struck. He wrote it in Italy and it features the line "From Milano Italy to Tokyo Japan" in honour of that over hefty low ends, steely mid-range leads and ricochetting hits. A fat dub is found on the B-side of this release which was for years thought lost until a hard disk turned up the treasure.

Review: Chantage are Eve Blouin (aka Moona) and Vivien Goldman, a writer/broadcaster/musician who has devoted much of her work to Afro-Caribbean and global music. They had only one release back in 1983 on the Celluloid label. This exclusive reissue on German label Staubgold features an extended version of 'It's Only Money' from the original release, plus the dub version by legendary British producer Adrian Sherwood, which previously was only released on his On-U Sound imprint under the project name Playgroup in 1983.

Review: Four years deep into its disco, beatdown and edit adventures, Smokecloud's status is nigh-on impeccable. Here we find them uniting four of their most creative craftsmen for four straight-up dancefloor pacifiers. Highlights include the sludgy slo-mo Edwin Starr on acid flavoured "Caught Up" and the Diana Ross homage that is the sun-skanked reggae party jam "CC Tribute" by VinylAddicted & SMQ. Instant smiles.

Apperception (5:12)
Agglomeration (7:50)
Assertiveness (5:26)
Review: For his first 12" since the release of the fine Cyclicality Between Procyon And Gomesia LP on Dekmantel, Vakula has chosen to resurrect the Bandura label he last used back in 2014. The simply titled A contains four variations on a theme, each heavily influenced by electronic mutations of dub. So, opener "Aberration" offers a becalmed, intergalactic trip into dub techno territory, "Appreception" fixes starry Detroit techno electronics to a shuffling dub house groove, and the deliciously far-out "Agglomeration" drifts into deep space via hazy ambient dub textures. Arguably best of all, though, is "Assertiveness", where hushed chords and quietly pulsing bass crowd round a sparse, pitched-up electronic rhythm track.

Long Long Time (2:21)
Review: The Versatiles were a Jamaican reggae group whose expression hardly matched the stereotype of a musician working in the style nowadays; they wore matching white suits and bow-ties, and worked in a more jubilant, clean-cut style than what we're used to. 'Lulu Bell' is a rare and much-sought-after original from the band, released in 1969 and not released on a single reissue since. The B-side on this reissue from Harlem Shuffle, 'Long Long Time', is similarly rare, and it lyrically urges generational communities to come together in song and dance.

Viceroys - "Don't You Cry" (3:42)
Sly & Robbie - "Don't You Cry" (version) (3:57)
Review: It's time to take a trip back to the legendary 1980 production era of Sly & Robbie's Taxi label. By 1980-81, Taxi's stripped-down, heavyweight drum and bass sound ruled the dubplate scene at Channel 1 and while tracks like 'Heart Made of Stone' and 'Black Uhuru's' saw official releases, others like 'Warrior' and 'Rocks and Mountains' remained elusive and only surfaced decades later. 'Don't You Cry' by The Viceroys is one such raw, haunting roots track from that time with a thunderous drum and bass version also cinder. Straight from the dub room at 29 Maxfield Avenue, this long-lost gem is another special delivery.

Review: Emotional Rescue looks to the newly rebuilt but still very much culturally separate East and West Germany of the 1980s with this new EP. It's dub reggae through a post-punk and alternative lens by Hanover artists Felix Holter aka Dubvisionist. All these cuts have a very live, improvised feel because father way he worked from rhythms first and jammed endlessly before adding the vocals. They are taken from their 1987 release 10 Tracks Of Reggae & Dub Music which was inspired by the great Adrian Sherwood label On-U Sound label, and you can hear that clearly.

Galactic Dub (3:14)
Review: It's finally here... V.I.V.E.K launches a brand new label and, as the title suggests, it's something a little different to the deep 140 piledrivers his System Sound is known for. Two rootsical excursions and two killer versions, this is the sound of the System champion bringing things back to the source. The title track (featuring longstanding System MC Dego Rankin) is a warm dub jam, spaced for good measure. Flip for "Galactic" as V.I.V.E.K flings us further east on a ship powered by Oriental strings and another rolling dub groove that's designed to make rigs purr. Beautiful.

Review: Marcel Vogel and Intimate Friends seems to be an equation that always results in vinyl bliss - see last year's inaugural seven inch from the label which had input from Vogel along with Jordan Czamanski, Ruf Dug and other talented friends. Expanding matters to the 12" format for this third release only means there is more room to fill with sonic excellence and Vogel is clearly up to the task. It's a diverse affair with four takes on "Doin' It", with the predominant mood on the A Side soul heavy and dubby on both the original and refix from African Shakedown's Noema. The 12" is fairly ruled by the flipside refix from NY AK however, with the UK producer recasting the original as dusty Detroit influenced house!

She Dub (3:33)
Review: ZamZam 82 is a first ever collaboration with another label and it is the nighty Dubquake Records from Geneva who get involved on this special cut. The story goes that 'She Solid' was born when Dubquake's Rico and Steph played Nazamba the Von D instrumental while driving in the Alps. He was immediately struck with inspiration and began writing in the car. It's a tight, bubbling tune with clean, modern bass and shiny synths as well as tumbling toms and oodles of reverb. The dub is taken in more weird and tripped out dictions thanks to some mad nob twiddling.

Review: Belgian artist and producer DJ Athome has put together this compilation for Musique Pour La Danse with the intention of highlighting the niche UK fesitval scene between 1986 and 1996. It was a time when psychedelic dub, space rock, and early electronica were all in collision with each other as people took ever more mind altering drugs and partied in spiritual locations like Stonehenge. Listening to the sounds takes you there in an instant with weird and wonderful bongos, didgeridoos, new age melodies, world music and non-Western influences all feeding into the tracks. As much as this is a reminder of the good time for those who were there, it's also a brilliant collection for newcomers with an interest in musical history.

Review: Many of us turned to music during the lockdowns to keep us sane. For dub lovers, one pace was more reliable than any for some killer sounds. Greg Dread's online live sessions were always hugely uplifting and in turn inspired him to crate this new album. It hits a little more dark and frenzied than the first volume and includes Dreadzone's remix of Megative's of Big Audio Dynamite's 'Sightsee MC' featuring The Clash's Mick Jones on guitar and Don Letts on vocals. Review: Rob Da Bank always knows best. His Sunday Best imprint now brings us Good Times: Skank & Boogie, compiled by the one and only Norman Jay. This is in its 12th edition so you can certainly trust the DJ on this one. Starting out with a cover of the classic Pink Panther theme by Henri Mancini by St. Germain, it also features another brilliant cover of Steve Wonder's "Living For The City" by Michael McDonald (Doobie Bros./Steely Dan) but there's some super fine boogie in the form of Paul Johnson's "Better Than This (Dego & Kaidi 2000 Black mix)". There's classics too; the timeless wonder of Deodato's "Never Knew Love" from 1984 and Stone City Band's 1980 hit "Little Runway" featuring Rick James. All killer, no filler on this one, thank you Sir Norman!

Review: The first Jura Soundsystem-led compilation Transmissions One came back in 2018 and was one of the best of that year. The second followed in March 20 just as the pandemic hit and did a fine job of helping us to forget our woes by transporting us to a faraway land and now this third volume repeats the trick. It offers four sides of perfectly escapist dub, Balearic bliss, sun-kissed ambient and lo-fi soul. It comes from the likes of DJ Jimmy Groove, Full Moon Scientist and plenty of originals and remixes from Jura Soundsystem themselves.

There's reggae, dub, ska, a cover of Joy Division, head twisting goodness from Gentleman's Dub Club and plenty of exclusives. It's an essential listen, basically.

His ability to unearth recordings you're guaranteed to never have heard before, and join the dots in ways you'd never have thought before, his "Strange Breaks" series is legendary. Long since off-press, to celebrate their 20th anniversary BBE have repressed this seminal 2009 sophomore. From the turbo blues fusion of Roy Head and the speeding Mancini feels of Val Marrall's Orchestra to the more sedate, slinky funk of Johnny Griffith and sunny-side roots of Tinga Stewart, Mr Thing's odyssey remains as inciteful, intriguing and as full of treasure as it did seven years ago.

This album, which arrives just in time for the stoners' best day of the year, 420, features iconic tracks from pioneering dub dons King Tubby, Scientist, Dennis Bovell and Roots Radics. These are the legends that helped shape the genre and this compilation highlights how they did it and what influence they had on the development of dub music. So, when the day comes, light up a fat one and turn this one up loud.

Review: A true veteran selector, the legendary and well respected David Rodigan certainly knows a thing or two about Jamaican music. More than 30 years in the game, his passion for the small island's music is as strong today as it was back then, as was evident at his recent gig at the 02 in Shepherds Bush. As informative as it was entertaining, and with more spring in his step than a kid on a pogo stick, Rodigan's ability to capture the audience through his stage presence and tune selection was awe inspiring. It's no surprise then that he excels on the latest Fabriclive compilation. Representing the full spectrum of Jamaican music from dub to dancehall, modern roots reggae to classics, Fabriclive 54 is must for the newcomer or seasoned reggae lover. For anyone who isn't aware of who Augustus Pablo or King Tubby are, the first track "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown" will certainly have them scouring both artist's back catalogues for more dubbed out treasures. Featuring other influential artists from past and present such as Prince Alla, Chezidek, Mr Vegas, Konshens, Beres Hammond, Sly & Robbie, Shaggy & Million stylez Rodigan has done a stupendous job in representing a cross section of three decade's worth of Jamaican music, but would we expect any less?

Review: Soul Jazz Records' latest trawl through the vast archives of Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd's Studio One empire focuses on Rastafarianism-inspired roots reggae classics recorded for the label and its offshoots during the 1970s. A laidback, quietly soulful and undeniably conscious mood prevails throughout, with highlights coming thick and fast. Our picks of a very strong bunch include Freddie McGregor's superb 'I Am A Revolutionist', Devon Russell's organ-heavy 'Jah Jah Fire', Im and Count Ossie's pleasingly percussive, fuzzy and calypso-influenced 'Give ME Back Me Language and Me Culture' and Horace Andy's simply brilliant 'Mr Jolly Man'. As usual with Soul Jazz, the accompanying sleeve notes are detailed, authoritative and tell the little-known story of Dodd's own relationship to Rastafarianism.

It brings together the very best of Jamaican reggae with a number of the more rare tracks sitting alongside some stone cold classics. Review: Originally released in 1981 on the Clocktower label, this killer compilation does a fine job of harnessing the raw magic of Lee "Scratch" Perry's legendary Black Ark era. Although the sounds are mostly drawn from mid-70s sessions, it also features two standout early cuts from the late 60s, namely Perry's gritty versions of 'Tighten Up' and 'Serious Joke'. Elsewhere, highlights include Johnny Lover's deep DJ take over Devon Irons' 'When Jah Come' and the rootsy energy of Ricky and Bunny's 'Bush Weed Corn Trash.' This reissue is a crucial document of Perry's genre-defining production, masterful take on vintage dub, toasting and spiritual reggae heat.

Review: Originally released in 1982 and produced by Donovan Germain, this rare roots DJ album by Lee Van Cleef offered a pre-digital glimpse into the future of reggae. Recorded with The Roots Radics and The Taxi Gang at Channel One and Harry J's studios, the album captured a distinct era of Jamaican music. Featuring hard-to-find tracks and period-appropriate artwork, this release on Germain's Revolutionary Sounds label stands out as a classic example of early dancehall styles. Lee Van Cleef's unique voice and the album's historical significance make it a prized piece for fans of vintage reggae.

Review: Following the recent release of the first retrospective of Andrew Weatherall remixes of Heavenly Recordings material, the long-serving London label has delivered a second volume of inspired reworks from the late, great DJ/producer. Like its predecessor, this speedy sequel contains reworks delivered by Weatherall at different points over a near 30 year period. It's all spectacular, of course, but our current favourites include a chugging, 2009 punk-funk revision of Doves' 'Compulsion', the post-punk dub headiness of Audiobooks' 2018 cut 'Dance Your Life Away', a vintage, electro-fired Two Lone Swordsmen dub of Saint Etienne and a rare, percussion-rich and extremely hard to find Sabres of Paradise tweak of Espiritu's 'Boninta Manana'.

Review: Did you know that Lima, Peru, has earned a reputation as South America's party capital? Or, for that matter, that the City is home to a thriving "tropical bass" scene, where a dedicated band of homegrown heroes giddily fuse dubstep, techno and electronica? Peru Boom aims to chart the rise of this healthy but internationally under-represented scene, via tracks from all of the city's major players. For those not schooled in the scene's intricacies, it makes for fascinating listening, as traditional South American rhythms and vocals get mangled, re-arranged, and fused with heavy sub bass lines, fizzing electronics, humid melodies and tipsy, 8-bit funk.

All the usual Stix suspects are present and correct here with Matcher, 7 Samurai, Mato, and John Milk all contributing to the nine tracks that will nice up any dancehall that's got a sense of humour. Stand out cuts include the 7 Samurai Electro Dub take on Levan classic "Stand On The Word" and the Grandmagneto cover of "Tainted Love". The Mato mix of "Happy" is as chalk or cheese as the original from that fella in the big hat.

Review: Over recent years, there have been countless reissue of reggae-disco rarities and slept-on classics. Soul Jazz has, surprisingly given that they first dipped into the style 20 years ago on the now legendary Reggae Disco Hustle compilation, been surprisingly silent, so it's nice to see them joining the party in fine style. Disco Reggae Rockers is a fitting sequel to its illustrious predecessor, featuring as it does a wealth of killer covers of - and more adventurous 're-versions' inspired by - vintage soul, disco and funk tunes. The plentiful highlights include Devon Russell's inspired take on Curtis Mayfield's 'Move On Up', Risco Connection's super-sweet version of Diana Ross classic 'It's My House', Valerie Harrison's interpretation of Me'lissa Morgan's 'Fools Paradise' and Hortense Ellis re-frame of Candi Staton hit 'Young Hearts Run Free'.

Review: There are many facets to Lee 'Scratch' Perry's indelible mark on music, but his work as The Upsetter is perhaps the truest expression of his affinity for reggae. Of course that's still reggae filtered through one of the most unique minds to change the course of music, but a compilation like Battle Axe serves as the perfect summation of his distinctive touch crafting lilting riddims from the Black Ark. Trojan originally released Battle Axe outside of Jamaica in 1972, gathering together some particular highlights from those heady early years, but 50 years on compilations like these stand more like vital albums in their own right - unique documents of very specific times in artistic development. It's a welcome treat to see it repressed, brilliant cover art intact.

Vox Populi & Man - "Megamix" (2:17)
Review: There's an awful lot going on here, and as such plenty to talk about. Alternative Funk: Volume 1 is both a compilation and reissue, with the original outing landing on cassette in the early-1980s on VP231, a label set up by Pacific 231, AKA Pierre Jolivet. The albums were the brainchild of Axel Kyrou and Francis Man, founders of the legendary Vox Populi!, and their aim was to showcase far out sounds, at least som of which were their own.

What we have in the modern iteration is a snapshot of that expansive and often hallucinatory aural odyssey, with seminal and lesser known artists resting side-by-side on the track list. Stylistically broad, running the gamut from dub percussion to cold wave and industrial, it's yet more evidence of just how fertile a decade the 80s were.

Review: Weird, enigmatic, and unarguably wonderful would be three ways to describe the names that have been brought together on this reissue of part of a compilation series that first landed on cassette via the VP231 imprint as the 1980s got into gear. A collector's item in the truest sense, Alternative Funk Vol.2 is a strange yet recognisable beast, with so much here being almost familiar but alien at the same time.

Over the course of the track list, then, you'll find proto-e-funk (Dee Nasty's 'Orientic Groove'), block party electro hip hop ('Asphalt Zombie' by Scoop!), broken, guitar-lick-heavy funk that's almost definitely been sampled for pop and house mash ups, only set to the vocals of a militant German sex droid ('Der Sound Kosten' by Melsjest), and spoken word poetry worthy of Hunter S. Thompson layered over driving breaks (Randall Kenney's 'Norma Jones'), alongside a host of even trippier, experimental and abstract stuff.

Review: Scotch Bonnet's periodic Puffers Choice compilations are always worth picking up, featuring as they do a mixture of label highlights from Mungo's HiFi and their closest collaborators, and tracks from like-minded producers and vocalists scattered around the UK and far beyond. Predictably, this third volume - the first in two years - is every bit as essential as its predecessors. It boasts a mixture of digi-dub, revivalist roots, dancehall and lover's rock, with highlights including Viktoriuous's hook-up with Earl Cunningham, 'Hotstepper', the raw weight of Parly B's killer crew cut 'Lyrics Spree' (featuring Daddy Freddy and Tippa Irie, amongst others), the future dancehall of Shokryme and RTKaL's 'BBS', and the soulful, warped bass-sporting heavy dub pressure of Skari's 'Black' (featuring INT Dub).

Review: Soul Jazz Records continues to trawl through the vast archives of Jamaica's Studio One label and its many offshoots. This time round, they're focusing on uplifting, feel-good rocksteady and soulful reggae cuts from the late 1960s and early '70s. As you'd expect, it's an excellent collection that not only showcases classic cuts and well-worn "riddims", but also obscurities and the sort of rare gems that make reggae collectors go weak at the knees. With such stars as Alton Ellis, John Holt, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, the Heptones and Jackie Mittoo all featured, and exhaustive sleeve notes from reggae scholar Rob Chapman, Rocksteady Got Soul is another essential Studio One compilation from the reliable Soul Jazz Records crew.

Review: Later this spring, authors Paul 'Smiler' Anderson and Mark 'Bax' Baxter will release "Scorcha!", a coffee table book celebrating the skinhead and suedehead movement of the late 1960s and early '70s. For the uninitiated, it was a largely white British working class movement inspired by both the dress of the Windrush generation and the ska, rocksteady and reggae music they brought with them from the Caribbean. This excellent ten disc seven-inch box set from Trojan has been designed as a musical accompaniment to the book. It boasts a wealth of classic cuts popular within the skinhead and suedehead scenes, both from well-known Jamaican artists and those that have largely been overlooked.

Review: The Studio One catalogue is the gift that keeps on giving, and Soul Jazz continually play Santa. This latest comprehensive collection is a great compilation of some of the best DJs and MCs to have been involved in reggae. Vital Jamaican stars like Dillinger, Prince Jazzbo and Lone Ranger all feature next to more hardcore names and some choice rare cuts. Spanning the 70s and into the mid-1980s, this 18-track offering gives a glimpse into the evolution of reggae to more digital and dancehall styles that come later, all with specially commissioned sleeve notes by Fashion Records head honcho Chris Lane.

Review: Trojan have pulled together some of reggae's finest moments here, and importantly they come from some of the genre's most vital female talents, who can often be overlooked in favour of their more visible male counterparts. Across four sides of vinyl the likes of Millie Small, Althea & Donna, Marcia Griffiths, Phyllis Dillon, and Susan Cadogan all deservingly feature and personal sleeve notes from musician Rhoda Dakar also add real value. Big hits, unknown rarities and some brilliantly wonky numbers like Sandra Robinson's "Sensi For Sale" make this an instant NEED!
