Review: The French deep house label D3 Elements is now a decade old and to mark the occasion it has assembled a superb three part EP series featuring plenty of talents both new and old. The second EP kick off with some Japanese stylings from Koizumi Yukiko and his piano laced bongo workout '526'. Taelue sets off on a deep and heavy bassline pulse that will make floors march and Nemanja Krstic's 'Aquae Sulis' brings some jazzy chord work and bubbling funk bass for a nice heartfelt vibe. Gnork shuts down with a skittish, stripped back broken beat that makes this another diverse offering.

As you'd expect, there's some genuine peak-time gold to be found on this second salvo in the series. After beginning with the bumping U.S garage richness of Barbara Tucker's gospel-flecked "Beautiful People", the set variously touches on glitchy deep house goodness (DJ T re-editing the "Full Effect" mix of Essence's "Moments In House"), stomping and muscular deep house (DJ Sneak), jazz-funk inspired house dreaminess (the original version of Wamdue's "King of My Castle") and ambidextrous dancefloor sweatiness (the Kenny Dope style breakbeats, heavy bass and woozy pads of Soul Fusion's "Basstone (Underground Network Mix)".

Review: Raw but slinky Chi-style deep house from Boo Williams, a key fixture of the Illinois city's nightlife since 1981. Originally released on Relief in 94 'A New Beginning' and its sequelae 'The-B-W Groove' and 'Phasis' are surprising contrasts here, providing affective sonic snapshots of the city's many blocked, narrow streets. The former of these two tracks serves steam-trailed strings and gulping chords down below, whilst the later jacks up the high knob to enclose an FM-bobbing bounce, around which spitting 909s, tuned cowbells and overdriven kicks collect.

Review: Kai Alce's NDATL Muzik is one of our favourites for deep house so imagine our delight to learn that it now branches out with a new sub-label, Nutria Sounds. Its debut release is a gem from Shaka with Eve's soulful vocals capturing the essence of Paris through organic textures and sultry melodies. The main vocal mix has jazzy chords and a carefree vibe, while 'Unbleached' is a more driving deep house cut with dancing keys and low end heft. The ever-on form Chicagoan Vick Lavender also steps up with a signature jazz-infused remix that is refined yet ready to work the 'floor. This is a fine debut for Nutria Sounds, which seems like it is going to be another vital outlet for heartfelt and classy house.

Review: In the world of house music, it's often the B-sides - more adventurous or deeper alternatives to the peak-time-focused lead cut - that often last the test of time. It's a conclusion that Vick Lavender has come to, at least, because this limited-edition EP marks the first in a 'B-Sides Series' in which all cuts are bonuses, alternate takes or 'tributes' to other artists. He begins by paying tribute to Dexter Wansel on 'A Space of My Own', layering dense hand percussion, spacey electronics and intergalactic synth sounds over a rock-solid kick-drum pattern. He then slams down two versions of the King Sporty sampling 'Mr Sporty': the sax-squelch-and jammed-out keys-heavy brilliance of the 'Time Traveler Re-imagined Mix' and the more leisurely, synth solo sporting deep house warmth of the 'Drums & Life' version.

Review: Big Love's popular compilation-style A Touch Of Love series returns for a sixth instalment, with boss man Seamus Haji once again showcasing a quartet of tried-and-tested treats. Fittingly, he kicks things off with 'Serious', a kind of hbrid heavy garage-house/disco house affair featuring organ solos aplenty and vocals from Chicago legend Mike Dunn, before Moon Boots joins the dots between sweet 80s soul and nu-disco on the synth-powered vocal number 'In My Life'. Review: DJ SizleCaude is the head of the Herbal Soundz label and this is his first EP. It's one steeped in classic house knowledge and Chicago-referencing sounds. That is particularly true on 'About Time' with its spoken word sermon over dusty old drum sounds and hefty deep house drums. 'Kindly Listen' cuts it up with razor-sharp hi-hats and swirling pads that sound like a church organ in meltdown. Last of all is 'Ntho Tse', a swirling cosmic cut that takes you on a voyage through lush synth work and heartwarming pads before settling on a nice jazzy vibe.

Review: Tyree is one of the early house artists from Chicago who played his part in shaping the hip-house sub genre, with its big beast, big vocal samples and plenty of attitude. Here his 'Acid Over' cut is served up on a new 12" from Chicago Vinyl with three different mixes. The first finds self-certified House Gangster DJ Sneak serving up a raw and rolling, loopy and frenzied remix that never quits. 'Acid Over' (Acid Over 23) is brilliantly cut up and manic with acid vocals and thudding house drums. Last of all comes Hugo's Piano Re cut version with its woody 909 drum sounds and mad whistles.

Review: Omar S treats us to a second release in the space of a week, with a much deserved reissue of some 1996 Roy Davis Jnr rawness across the A Side. The Stevie Wonder classic "All I Do" gets chopped up, laid over a killer Chi town beat filled with instantly gratifying raw drum edits and augmented by some evil bass thumps. Relentlessly brilliant and sounds just as fresh some 14 years on. Echoing a current trend this side plays outwards from the inside groove. On the flip Omar S teams up with DJ B Len D for the bongo heavy deep groove of "Da Teys" a track that's characterised by melodic keys which increase with curveball drama as the track progresses.

Review: While much of the material they release is brand spanking new, Phonogramme is not averse to reissuing choice gems from the 1990s. That's the case here, as the French deep house label offers a new edited - pressed to striking pink marbled wax - of Analog Trks Vol 1, a 1997 EP from former Prescription Records artist Abacus (real name Austin Bascom). This edition varies from the original, featuring two of the four cuts and a previously unreleased take of another. Check first 'We Cookin' Now', a deliciously deep, slow-building masterpiece of smoky late night sonics, stripped-back percussion, Chez Damier motifs and subterranean bass, before admiring the tech-tinged deep house bounce of 'Opinion Rated R'. Rounding things off is 'Black Thanxx (Instrumental)', a kind of deep house/deep acid fusion workout rich in spacey chords, analogue bass and prototype tech-house bleeps.

Review: Nu Groove proudly share 'Anybody Out There/20 Paces From The Moon', a sexy four-track package celebrating the work of Marshall Jefferson as Jungle Wonz, and featuring two fresh mixes from the esteemed Mike Dunn and Steve Mac. Jefferson's output under his own name is often sharper and sparser than this otherwise deeper and more truer-to-desire moniker known as Jungle Wonz. Opening with the searching opine for help and salvation, 'Anybody Out There' - "is there anybody out there who really gives a care?", goes the lead vox - we hear a fundamental question firmly footed against a groundwork of bobbly acid and offbeat rimshots, provided on the rerub of Jefferson by Dunn. Dunn also delivers a string-laden dub version of this A1; then Steve Mac offers a set of esoterically extra ests with '20 Paces From The Moon' and another space-loungey version of this latter track for balanced measure.

Review: Larry Heard once said that he stumped upon his trademark dusty deep house sound rather by mistake - he was simply trying to recreate the instrumental disco of his childhood on the limited machinery he had available at the time. Either way, he went on to explore and exploit its most spiritual and spine-tinging aspects across a faultless discography that often looks to the cosmos for inspiration. That is true of this second volume of his Around The Sun album on his own Alleviated Records. It's another fine showcase of Chicago house, deep house, jazz and r&b that is utterly timeless.

Review: Any new album from deep house pioneer and all-round legend Larry Heard is good news, but especially so when it's credited to his best-known and best-loved alias, Mr Fingers. Around The Sun Pt 1 is Heard's first album under the alias for four years and, unsurprisingly, it's as musically expansive, evocative, and atmospheric as they come. Naturally, it's rooted in the warming, dreamy, subtly jazz-flecked deep house style he's been tweaking and improving over decades, with occasional forays into sun-kissed downtempo grooves ('Touch The Sky'), angular acid tracks, Heard's take on dub house (the deliciously deep, micro-house influenced 'Marrakesh') and summery Balearic house ('Shimmer'). All in all, it's another masterpiece from deep house's most significant pioneer.

Review: The inimitable Santonio Echols/Next Generation have penned many a great soulful house hit and one of them is 'Bad For Me' which now arrives as a remix package on the NCM Label out of Detroit. First up is Eddie Fowlkes's dub which brings nice warm, smeared chords and allows the vocal to pop out of the mix and bring the sunshine. Ron Carroll's club mix has a little more direct energy in the drums, then the Emanuell Groove mix is a funky one with steamy sax notes up top and nice loose drums. Last of all, the Mannywya Deep dub mix slows things right down to a late-night crawl.

Review: Vick Lavander is a name that has always been a byword for deep house quality. His sound is couched in a classic template but comes with subtle tweaks and plenty of its own musical character. BEYOND is a bumper collection of beats which proves just that. There are silky and cosmically minded sounds like 'Time & Time Again' next to subtly jazzy dancers like 'Sunset BLVD' and dubby, elegant grooves like the life-affirming 'Grace'. The pace picks up with joints like 'Knights' but never at the expense of atmosphere and slows right down with swab-tinged downbeat delights like 'Good Timing'. A magnificently rich work.

Review: ** Camera's ready. Prepare for the Repress ** Curtis Jones is never one to rest on his laurels, as his staggering back catalogues as Green Velvet and Cajmere can attest but such is the force of his personality that a new release still feels like an event. "Bigger Than Prince" capitalises on Jones' knack for a vocal that lambasts the less earnest quirks of the dance music industry, while creating the hook to make the track a bomb in the same instance. Production-wise, there's a measured strut to the track with some choice growling bass synths and an underlying disco flavour that suits Jones just fine. On the remix front, Circus turn to The Martinez Brothers to hammer out a rolling, percussion focused version perfect for big room mixing, while Hot Since 82 turn out a similar line in boompty peak time damage.

Review: American house don Roy Davis Jnr is inseparable from his cult classic 'Gabriel' with Peven Everett but also has many other delightful deep house cuts in his discography. His Black Excellence EP is one of them. It came digitally in 2022 on the P'oe Records label and now gets pressed up to wax for the imprint's first foray into this medium. It features the single 'Hidden Hebrew' which is a percussive deep house sound with soothing piano chords and plenty of drum fills and splashy cymbals. There are two different remixes of it as well as his own RDJ version of 'Summer La Costa' which is a more humid and horn-laced jam with a soulful topline. Last of all is a Mourad Remix packed with wet hand claps and chopped-up loops and violin.

Review: House music royalty par excellence, Honey Dijon is finally gracing us with a second album after she turned her artistry up a notch with 2017's The Best of Both Worlds. Once again shoring up with her spiritual home Classic, Black Girl Magic finds Dijon celebrating love in every sense of the word, and lead single 'Show Me Some Love' is a fine case in point. There's that twitchy, freaky energy she instinctively brings to the floor, plus some smouldering vocal turns from Channel Tres and Sadie Walker. Review: While many have imitated, no one has ever really come close to crafting the sort of spiritually affective deep house that Ron Trent kicks out with apparent ease. 'Black Magic Woman' is a prime example - an ode to the power of the feminine form with vocals from Harry Dennis, most known for his previous work with Larry Heard. The original is a deep house epic with jazzy chords and organic drums, lashing of bass and spoken word musings from Dennis. The Joaquin edit & Overdubs version is more intense and bright and the Coflo remix is more soft, mellifluous and warm. Epic stuff with great artwork, too.

Review: Belgian label Music Man Records has assembled Boccaccio Life 1987-1993, a 40-track compilation honouring the legendary Destelbergen club that helped shape Europe's electronic underground. Far more than just the birthplace of New Beat, Boccaccio championed raw, futuristic house and techno long before the genres went mainstream. Review: DJ and producer Mark Grusane is a hails from Chicago and is co-owner of Mr. Peabody Records, which specialises in rare and obscure vinyl from around the world. While many prior releases have appeared due to that affiliation, 'Book Me For Your Birthday Party' hears the cream of his music released for German label Bless You. Four raw, sexual, jacking, jukey house music cuts appear, showing off the kind of production antics Grusane gets up to while enjoying his off hours at the record store. While they're at least ten years old, we're sure Grusane still has access to the same inner clown that not only allows him to be such a great party guest, but also lets him make such heaters.

Review: Beyonce's last album was widely heralded as a triumph by all. It found her diving into house music and working with scene stalwarts like Luke Solomon and Honey Dijon. It won a Grammy for its efforts. Now, even though plenty of the originals were ready to work a club dancefloor, we get treated to some remixes. They all focus on the standout single 'Break My Soul' and we get funky and soulful stuff from Terry Hunter, broken beat from Will I Am, house thumps from Honey Dijon, and filter-heavy stuff from The Queens. Add in the Nita Aviance club mix and the original version and you have a useful package indeed.

Review: Chicago-born Byron Stingily will of course always behest known as the lead vocalist for Ten City. He has a beautiful tone and is often referred to as one of the genre's best ever singers. Here his 'Can't Help It' gets served up four different ways - the first is with big pianos set to get hands in the air on the Wade Too mix, while the Spaces Between mix is a more deep take with a fleshy bassline. The Soul Clap mix has a garage shuffle to it as well as withering synth designs and retro-future pads and last of all the Spaces Between dub rounds out this rich, heartfelt package of real dance floor gold.

Review: This new 12" on Aliens On Wax declares that Chicago Jack Is Back and we are fine with that. The raw, early, street wise sounds of the Windy City are still some of the best house has ever given rise to and that is encapsulated across four new cuts from Gettoblaster and two collaborators. First it's Baggi on 'Throwin' Down' (feat Chip E) then it's Terry Mullan on 'Armando's Ghost'. The flipside has the solo cuts though both feature house legends Chip E and Joe Smooth making this the most authentic package of jack you will have heard in some time.

Review: Mystic Bill (real name William Torres) has been making music in Chicago since the late 1980s, though it's only since the mid 1990s that his records have been appearing in stores. Here he makes his bow on Rawax offshoot ChiWax with a set of cuts loosely inspired by the long-held Windy City trend of fusing elements of jacking house and jazz. He begins in typically forthright fashion on 'Pitmaster Ritual', where jacking acid house drums are overlaid with spacey synth solos and jazzy electronics, before unfurling the chunkier and more locked in, organ-sporting shuffle of 'We Play Jazz'. Over on side B, '4 Paul' is a wholehearted tribute to sadly departed Chicagoan house great Paul Johnson, while 'This Side of the Tracks' is deeper, warmer and altogether weirder in the best possible way.

Review: Following on from his recent collaborative outing with Jonasclean, James Curd now finds himself working with the deep house legend and Yoruba master Osunlade on a new track for Get Physical. 'Chocolate Puddin'' is a joyous and organic cut with life-affirming vocals that borrow heavily from gospel while Afro-house synths and drums unfold below. Three remixes take it into different territory with Kai Alce offering his signature smoothness, a Yoruba Soul mix going big on the lush chords and FNX Omar getting tribal. All in all, it adds up to a varied package and another great outing for Curd.

Review: Pretty much does what it says on the tin, this one. Classic Tyree Cooper productions in all their glory, plus some remixes of them from fellow US greats. Cooper was, of course, an early pioneer of what was known as hip-house - a raw mix of hip-hop and house that was short-lived, probably because the man himself perfected it and few could ever do much more with the blueprint. 'Hardcore Hip House (Tony Humphries mix re-edit)' is dusty, raw, piano-laced house excellence, 'Acid Over (Mike Dunn edit)' is a more frenzied 303 workout and 'I Fear The Night (feat Chic - vocal mix)' is a jack track for dark and strobe lit floors. 'Video Crash' shuts down with a coarse and textural collision of drums, synths and crashing hits.

Review: Reviewing Roy Davis Jr.'s impressive and deep catalogue, picking and choosing a few to represent him on a 'Classics Remastered' EP must be an impossible choice. With over 35 years of brilliant, genre defining music, we can't imagine how difficult this task must have been. Who hasn't heard 'RU Ready' on the dancefloor before?! Also included is the long version of 'Save Your Life' which has been a late-night jam choice for countless DJs. We're really excited to see the 1996-edit of 'Heart Attack' made the final track list also - this tech house masterpiece has killed dancefloors the world over. Hopefully there'll be more classics of Roy Davis Jr coming after this one - for now, pick these remastered gems up now.

Review: We will always have time to check out whatever it is that Glenn Underground is serving up. The Chicago house mainstay has carved out his own distinctive sound over the last three decades and much of it comes on his own Strictly Jazz Unit. This latest drop is a reissue of his classic 'Cloud Burst'. It is a track that sits on the more raw and physical end of his personal spectrum with jacked-up drums and plenty of percussion run through with some wispy synths and the crunchiest of snares.
