Review: They don't call him Bay Boy for nothing - Bad Boy Pete is indeed that and shows it here with four fierce cuts of blazing techno for grotty, strobe-lit warehouses. Kicking off this wild and in your face ride of anarchistic bangers is the unrelenting 'Is That All You Got?' with its manic saw tooth synths spraying about over hard, edgy drums. 'What Shall We Say' is another one that fires out of the speakers with some menacing leeds and kinetic drum funk, 'Filthy Dark Bass Techno' then hammers it home with more hundred mile an hour drums and 'Morning Warehouse Techno' is pure sleaze and filth. Across five fresh cuts, he brings plenty of experimental flair but also some playful rhythms to a forward-thinking EP that sounds like little else. Review: Deeper shades of a finely sifted pedigree. Irish label Appian Sounds, helmed up by Al Blayney, champion only winnowed techno sounds, not threshed. A welcome international team huddle in, with these six artists from locales as far-flung as Amsterdam and Valencia contributing the likes of 'Tsuneo' and 'Persist'. The tunes verge melodic as they move through and beyond jankiness, distending die-cut acids and subtly synthetic humanisations, especially in the percussion department. 'Fuego' is the zen roshi's choice, its gaffered, glass-smithed pads topping off a naturalistic percussive surging forward, one best experienced with your eyes closed.

Review: Bashman is something of a Glasgow legend to those who know and after some stellar outings on Tom Carruthers' Non Stop Rhythm and Data Sync labels, he is back with more techno power. 'Corker' is a frenzied and caustic assault with unrelenting percussive hardness and 'I Want It' then pairs things back a little for some jumbled 909s and buzzy synth pressure, but the standout is the impish synths that dart about the mix. 'Gimme' then goes hard and raw again with eye-wateringly stark sounds and textures and 'Opening Hour' ends with a gurgling, swampy mix of messed-up drums and synths.

Review: Lyon-based Brazilian Pedro Bertho is an accomplished producer who now steps out with his own label, fittingly enough called Chez Pedro. It kicks off with a new EP 'Starlit Crates' which has already been teased by the well-received 'Have You Ever Played in Abidjan' (exclusive aired on Juno Daily), which paid tribute to that vibrant city and the Ivory Coast. 'Have You....' is a collaboration with percussionist Tutsy N'Zore, who adds great layers to Bertho's deep grooves, but there's loads going onelsewhere too.. 'Let Me Show You' has what sound like ambient recordings from a bustling market over bass-driven beats. 'Blue Hot Monday' is another humid and muggy deep techno mind melter and 'Shaved' is a crisp, tech-edged cut with frazzled synth work for peal time deployment. A great example of making functional, floor-pleasing grooves that have oodles of personality and character at the same time.

A suspenseful covenant formed between three huge-room techno striators, 'Lift Me Up' was born from a fruitful back-and-forth shared on the road to Sonus Festival in Croatia. Review: With this latest hyper-abstract club release, Italian-born, London-based producer Big Hands straddles an impressive range from chthonic sound design to readily lock-innable grooves. Named after the Roman equivalent of Dionysus, the god of fervour, celebration, and debauchery among other vices, 'Bacchanalia I' and its three inversions touch on furrows dug between dub techno, dubstep and brutalist techno no man's lands and they grow in intensity with each passing track. He's done it all from heft, swinging bass to the most caustic and experimental techno. For this one on XL he aims at the club once more. 'Fires' is our pick - an unrelenting, tightly stacked rhythm with alluring vocal hooks swirling up top and weird synth sounds adding even more unusualness.

Watery synths, hissing hi-hats with long trails and dub musings all colour these dynamic grooves. Review: Blue Hour shows a different look with this new outing on Arsenik as he delves into some deep and driving dub techno realms. 'Trekia' opens up and is a kinetic melange of prickly percussion and slamming drums with plenty of smeared and smudged chords and refuel synth leads. 'Osirus' has a sense of menace and unease in the grinding chord work and unsettled hi-hats which are off-grid and edgy. 'Atoll' strips things back with some smooth drums driving onward beneath melodic chords that bring a celestial feel. It's another of their famous various artist's collections, all with a focus on the deeper end of the techno spectrum. The eponymous Blue Hour kicks off with 'Afterglow' which has wispy neon synth trail and soft, rubbery drum and bass blends that take you into a cosmic sky. Review: Griffe's next release is a flanged freakout from producer Booh, its namesake being the essential Star Wars villain, Darth Vader: while these tracks may or may not mark the Sith lord's nefarious adventures, we do know that they are stonking stuff. Sidestepping his own BOOOoo recordings for a moment, this meticulously produced pranger includes the freewheeling 'Briscard Sound' and the rubbery, jouncy 'Save The Date', marking some abstract future moment in techno to be anticipated. 'Dog Eat Dog' and the title are much more sinister, yet all tracks mark consistent use of adept modular synths.

Review: Border Patrol (Stu Adam) brings his talents to Rezpektiva, who gladly represent his first and only EP for the 29th edition of their EPs series. Originally recorded for Middlesboro's Tumblin' Records in the mid 90s and released only in small quantities, the EP displays a canny sense of variety in painting pictures of house music's many possible worlds. The hilariously named 'Mobius Trip' leads the way, trailblazing a fiery string of pitched-up synths and watery stabs in its wake; the more experimental of the bunch, 'D'ya Want Business', is our favourite, bringing pure lowpassed kicks, infectious two-tone electroclash-ish basslines, and what sound like computer keyboard and lasershot sound effects into one heady cyberspatial stew.

Review: Barbatus D is a rare example of a new techno and electro concept label, one centring on the exploits and buccaneering braveries of the corsair Captain Barbatus D. Wreckords. This fictive entity - a pirate tulpa - is nonetheless the sort of character we can indeed imagine coming into real being, as long as at least some amount of booty has been nabbed, and/or some number of Barbatus D. "Wreckords" have been listened to, as ritual per. The EP comprises a four-track series of musings on a new, anarchic world order, in which roving seafarers, answerable to nobody, muse on issues like privacy, mass organisation, winter soleros and secret rooms. All sea shanties here were composed in the vein of 80s electro, brought to a freshly crisp modern production technique.

Review: Paris label Positive Future release positive music for positive people, but that doesn't hold them back a bit from concept-releasing V/As about future dystopias! "Once upon a time in a dystopian future", so the liners go, "humans are winning the battle against a zombie invasion" by fighting back, somehow, with their vinyl records (it's not stated explicitly, but we presume this means by playing them). "To defeat them forever and avoid a wicked future, DJs will have to join forces for a big party with every human still left standing." Of course, before the zombie plague, as far as sonic warfare went, military-grade sound design had been sanctioned for government use only, and the recording industries had precious little involvement. That all changes with producers Aline Brooklyn, Krol, Briki, Samuel Jabba and P.O., each of whom have reproduced and mass marketed their very own subsonic, antiviral weapon, of which there are four classes: A1, A2, B1 and B2. We choose B2, 'The Night', an instrument whose unsettling, garbled vocals and spine-tingling melodies make for, in our view, the best sonic zombie-away spray.

Review: Dance music is rife with megalomaniacal personalities eager to carve their names in, well, whatever the techno equivalence of blue-plaque posterity is. Here, however, the producer Brother Nebula (Lance DeSardi), from Texas, flips the desire to delusively status-climb for such trifles on its head, inverting the idiom "delusions of grandeur" in naming their EP 'The Grandeur Of Delusion'. Informed by delusion or not, this is a grand EP, rendering the problematic of grandiosity somewhat moot: from dark future garage faceoffs ('Ice Giant', 'God's Green Earth') to brooding halftime ice floes ('The Grandeur...'), Nebula has thoroughly honed his craft since relocating to London, not failing to blur genre categories across borders, nor to compel with huge, still technical broken beats.

Review: Stephen Brown is a Scottish producer known for his deep, Detroit-influenced techno. Active since the 1990s, he's released music on labels like Transmat, Skudge, and Subject Detroit. His productions blend melodic elements with rhythmic precision, a sound he's been honing and tinkering with for nearly 30 years. The 'Variations' EP on Syncrophone is a prototypical example of his sound. Each track is underpinned by a blend of skipping upbeat house rhythms with classic Detroit pads. The first track 'Compare' even adds some weird percussive sounds in the background and an ambiguous vocal sample that could be a child, or the nearby rapturous chants of a pigeon surely appreciating the groove as much as we are. The second track 'CZ3' is a raw groover with overdriven kicks and dry synth hits. One for the 'Djax-Up-Beats' heads! Track three 'Replika' is our choice cut, with a synth lead that sounds straight from dub techno but with more groove than the majority of tunes that you'll find in that genre. The final track 'The 5' has the biggest kick drum of the release which is sure to tear down any club floor is played at the right moment. An EP for the heads and the dancers.
