Cheetah & Janaway EP

Drum And Bass/Jungle
Cheetah - "See Dem Talk" (5:24)
Cheetah & Janaway - "Touch Me" (5:54)
Janaway - "Dubplate To The Head" (5:28)
Janaway - "Full Speed" (6:05)
Review: N4 Records bring a new split EP to our ears, not quite equally dividing the disc-space between producers Cheetah and Janaway. The former soundpusher, Cheetah, offers 'See Dem Talk' and 'Touch Me' on the A-side respectively - the former indulging relentless ragga sampleage come pitched-down snare-shots, the latter rave-piano and chipmunk catharses. Janaway meanwhile entirely dominates the B-side, with similarly raggaific consciousness streams set against a more rapidly and complexly patterned amen science on 'Duplate To The Head'; also our proverbial weapon of choice. Then 'Full Speed' also goes ravey; the track is heard ranting too, either through its use of distant patois exclamations, doubly delayed "soul!" shouts and, not least, orchestral hits worthy of a rave adherent of the oldest school.

Review: The Distorsion camp offers up its first sampler as a way of teasing you with the sort of quality sounds and artists it has on its roster. First up is a three-way collab between Citybox, Hankook & Orebeat whose 'Dangerous Changes' is an intense breakbeat workout for the peak time. Orebeat & Alex Clubbers keep the energy levels high and inject early 00s video-game style synths, Orebeat & Citybox keep it dark and raw with 'Gangsta' and Orebeat & JottaFrank laced up their thrilling breaks with acid lines and sleazy vocals on "Noche De Paris.' This is potent stuff for strobe-lit floors.

Enzo Leep - "People" (7:02)
Andrey Djackonda - "Next" (7:08)
Marcelo Cura & Smit - "Is It Possible" (8:55)
Review: Celosophy 004 presents a stellar compilation of cutting-edge dance music, showcasing four tracks that push the boundaries of the minimal and tech house genres. On Side-1, Marcelo Cura & Ja Kub's 'Talk 2 U' transports listeners to the early 90s with its melodic breakbeat sound, flirting with elements of ambient house for a very cool experience. Following suit, Enzo Leep's 'People' injects a dose of fun with its beachy vibe and infectious breakbeat rhythm, creating an atmosphere that's both melodic and energetic. Flipping over to the B-side, Andrey Djackonda's 'Next' takes a balearic and ambient downtempo turn, offering a refreshing change of pace with its laid-back mood. Closing out the compilation is Marcelo Cura & Smit's 'Is It Possible,' a sleek and polished tech house track characterised by its smoothness, fast-paced beats, and epic groove. Together, these tracks elevate Celosophy 004 to new heights, delivering next-level dance music. This record is hot!

Jarren - "Summertime In The 323" (4:52)
Hanna - "Prayin'" (6:37)
Zopelar - "Caminhos Abertos" (5:50)
Review: We're surprised that the superhero league The Jazz Avengers aren't more spoken about: the idea seems so familiar yet uncannily unknown, we wonder if the notion of a superhero troupe composed of entirely of Black jazz musicians would've been too disturbing for the US Empire not to suppress. Taking after the idea, Bryan Hervieu's 'Jazz Avengers' EP is an elegant quadruplet of boat-rocking house beats, holding more sway in the domain of vibe than they do in the way of big generic ideas. Igaxx and DJ Dreamboy's 'Through The Night' and 'New Life' move at similar tempi yet vibe at different freqs, the former waxing cowbell and dusky padwork, and the latter serving a relatively purist, calculative 808 jam energy. Jarren's 'Summertime In The 323' segues quite seamlessly out from this session mood, though it does add some surreal, pitch-convected plucks; Hanna's 'Prayin'' is the only soul curveball, its syncopated, pre-one DX7 E-Piano chord preset mixed to an impeccable, gut-churning quality.

Deep Dubstep
Traverse (4:09)
Deuce (3:58)
Review: Sometime Tempa family member J:Kenzo made his first appearance on ZamZam Sounds three years ago, aligning his hazy trademark sound with the label's next-generation dub ethos via the echoing deep dubstep brilliance of 'Kingston Hot' and 'Concrete Jungle'. This belated follow-up is, perhaps surprisingly, far more forthright, with 'Traverse' offering an energetic, low-slung mix of post-steppers dancefloor drums, layered tribal style hand percussion, deep sub-bass, hot-stepping dubstep breaks and trippy, echoing noises. The fun continues on the flip, where the Kent-born producer brilliantly blurs the boundary between two-step, deep dubstep and the squeezable sonics of dub techno.

Rudiman (4:47)
Review: Long-serving rave revivalist The Jaffa Kid (real name Daniel Pringle) is scarily prolific. He's seemingly able to conjure up acid-fired breakbeat and techno bangers seemingly at will. Here he returns to the mighty 030303 imprint with a speedy sequel to his 2020 mini-album Polysynthesis. He begins with a chunk of trance-inducing, spacey techno excellence - the gorgeous, ethereal and life-affirming hypnotism of 'Amazon' - before doffing a cap to classic 1990s IDM on 'Drum Mode'. 'In The Morning' sounds like a melodic techno head's take on Deep Dish classic 'Stay Gold' (that's a good thing, by the way), 'Etafe' is a dreamy breakbeat house treat, and 'Rudiman' is an immersive, ear-catching slab of 90s drum & bass revivalism with added ambient melodies and deep space chords.

Review: Jaisiel distills the magic of his previous releases on this colour and kaleidoscopic new outing It's A Pleasure which really has something for everyone. 'Nada Que Ver' is refracted new school electro-disco-tech with warm synth smears and vocoder vocals bring future vibes. The Lipelis ADHdance mix then reworks it into a pumping house cut with sensuous vocals and 'El Amanecer' (Tenerife '89 mix) is a blissed out and sun down Balearic sound. Last of all is 'Sobre Cien,' an old school broken beat jam that will get you partying like it was 1989.

Ultimate Dystopia (4:05)
Review: The idea of the 'Dreamworld' has pervaded all dance music since its beginnings, and 2024 proves no exception to this rule, with the latest astral projection of its kind coming by way of producer Jalil. Debuting 'Dreamworld' for his local label Stillwell, this is an acid house EP of carefully lucid exploratory proportions. Jalil builds a jocose yet driven palette from found samples against sombre backings, working a seemingly endless spate of transitional hits and impacts about a central acid line on 'Oberheimer'. He then dashes this intro's sense of withdrawal with an audacious pinch-point in the form of 'Moods Of Madness', a favourite of ours, adding aqueous chord-data to an already osmotic pulse.

Review: Leo James is back on his own Body Language label with a sixth tasteful take on breakbeat-driven sounds. He shows his range here with different grooves all exploring different moments. 'Better Days' is one that has you gazing off to the middle distance, lost in the rueful pads. 'Olive Grove' is a slowed-down and dubbed-out sound with lots of lovely reverb and 'Burst The Gates' is a deep digi-dub style cut with angelic vocals. 'A Thousand White Kites Flying High Above The Sea' is the ambient laced downtempo closer for late-night dreaming.

Funkin' (Hardy Tribute version)
Jungle DJ Tool
Review: Jamie 3:26, the Chicago house luminary, returns with the second instalment of his Danacefloor Damage series, a collection of re-rubbed disco cuts crafted with the dancefloor in mind, but possessing a depth that transcends the club. This time around, he's unearthed three gems, each an ode to his impeccable taste and his uncanny ability to breathe new life into forgotten classics. 'Flyin'' takes flight with a dizzying array of soaring strings and a groove that's as infectious as it is propulsive. 'Funkin' (Hardy Tribute Version)' pays homage to late disco/early house legend Ron Hardy, its driving bassline and soulful vocals a fitting tribute to his enduring influence. 'Jungle DJ Tool' injects a tribal energy into the mix, its percussive rhythms and hypnotic chants guaranteed to induce a state of dancefloor abandon. Jamie 3:26's edits are a masterclass in dancefloor manipulation, expertly balancing euphoric highs with moments of introspective restraint. A potent reminder that the classics never truly die when preserved in the right hands.

Idontknow (5:25)
Review: Astonishingly it's been four years since we last heared from Jamie XX, who midway through the last decade seemed an unstoppable musical force of nature. This comeback 12" - a single-sided, white label affair - is therefore hotly anticipated. Happily, we can confirm that it's rather good, with the experienced producer building a fiendishly percussive groove out of layered hip-house style breaks and tribal drum hits before introducing a gargantuan bassline, speeding things up to a "Shangan" style tempo and letting loose. Throw in some bold synth lines, a few electronic bleeps and some cut-up, glassy-eyed female vocal samples and you have a future dancefloor anthem on your hands. As comebacks go, "Idontknow" is pretty special.

Review: French minimal, tech and house master Janaret is back with more spaced out brilliance, this time on Shall Not Fade, one of the UK's most consistently excellent - and eclectic - labels. 'Joy & Happiness' kicks off with crispy tech beats and swirly sci-fi synths while gurgling bass works away down low. 'Silent' is a steamy brew for more peak time moments but never loses its class, and the vibes keep coming with 'Fallin' then slipping into a super cool and breezy late night deep house groove. 'Advanced' closes down with an electro-leaning rhythm that is light up by snappy snares and synth modulations.

Review: Fresh from wowing dancefloors with the superb Transcendence EP on Haws, Jeku joins Craigie Knowes. It's a neat fit, with the producer's signature style - a mixture of breaks, acid, trance-inducing grooves and dreamy electronics, with nods to the more psychedelic end of mid-90s British dance music - sounding both thrillingly contemporary and deliciously nostalgic. There's much to admire across the EP, from the breathless, breakbeat-driven intensity of acid-laden future classic 'Astral Dream' and the mid-90s Orbital-doing-progressive house flex of 'Again', to the spine-tingling, early Leftfield style dubbiness of 'Babylon 5.1' and the ultra-psychedelic, mid-tempo chug of 'Close Encounters'.

Review: Kito Jempere delivers a fiery four-track package that will electrify dance floors with his first outing of 2025. A bold departure from today's mainstream dance sounds, his New Life EP blends adventurous beats with a rebellious spirit and the lead track channels New Order's Technique era but is infused with early hip-hop breaks and a mix of acid, happy hardcore and ghetto tech. 'LoveFilter' takes a dreamy, chilled trip across electronic landscapes while 'Killer Line De-Part' combines trance, grunge and '80s analogue vibes for a thrilling climax. Closing with 'Put Love Into Your Heart (Club Mix),' Jempere leaves us with uplifting, feel-good energy.

Review: For the second salvo on their offshoot imprint, the Ghost Berlin crew has turned to Jive Talk, a DJ/producer duo that has been making waves on the UK underground. The 'ghosties' signed the tracks two years ago and have been showcasing the EP's three tracks in their sets ever since. Opener 'Action Vest' is a low-slung deep house-meets-tech-house treat, with trippy electronic noises, echoing rave sirens and deep chords rising above a deep, weighty bassline and skittish, broken-house beats. 'Trains, Planes and Amphibious Vehicles' sees them move closer to the smooth, sub-heavy, mind-mangling sound of London tech-house, while 'Eubanks' is a lightly acid-flecked slab of vintage Orbital-style breakbeat goodness.

Review: The artist himself admits that The Glory Days EP marks a new era for Alan Johnson after a decade of sporadic releases. Building on last year's Stillness EP, this release features entirely new music which has been made over the past two years as the creative process has been refined and moved towards a simpler storytelling approach. Assembled for the YUKU label, the EP showcases a shift in sound that blends past influences with new experimentation and danceable, glossy playfulness. Divided into two distinct moods, it reflects both a nod to a chaotic past and a glimpse into the future with earthed low ends and kinetic rhythms run through with fizzy electronics and menacing moods.

The gently lilting rhythms and optimism chords of 'This Must Be The Place' kick off before 'Nor Heaven, Nor Hell' rides on twisted synths and fleshy bass that take you down the rabbit hole. 'Gateway' (Sunrise mix) is pure Castelmorton rave at sun-up sort of tackle. A fine first EP.

This Dynamics of Acid label is another one dedicated to the cause and here Jonathan Hipgrave under his Jonny3snares alias explores six different and equally sublime sounds that will make your brain dance as much as your body. There is an inward sense of reflection to the opener 'Signal Drive', a deep melancholy to 'Recovery' then squelchy hyperactive rhythms define 'Scramble.' Three flipside cuts again pair meaningful synths with lithe drum programming to make for a fantastically futuristic EP.

Review: Serendipitous that a duo comprising two artists named Justice and Mercy should come together. With the 'Concrete Jungle' EP first emerging in 1992, under the name 'Mixed Concrete' on the pioneering White House Records label, this is no less one of those records whose ongoing reputation by and large matches its quality. It's no surprise that it should be so lauded; we expert listeners can really tell the extra care and attention poured into it, with which it continually anoints itself. Lead track 'Soothe My Soul' is especially great, having been made infamous, for the way in which its otherwise run-of-the-mill breaks-chuggage opening finds itself dashed into oblivion by a momentous breakdown, of howling pitched-up vocals and legato stringed, bowed caelum. Such a heavenly breakdown is an essential feature of the breakbeat / rave uplifter form, in many cases otherwise unfairly passed over. Then the polysynths and backing peals of 'Doin' What You're Doin'' command an almost equal sheen, with the track featuring the clearest-as-day instance of a "hey hey!" jungle sample as we've ever heard. The closer 'Experience' is just as divine, seeming to transcend its initial breakdance sample-looper with yet another quarter-noted, dove-winged eclat elapsing over time.
