Review: Budde & Osti of 100 Records presents an experimental "playground" that offers listeners a unique perspective on their work. The sizzling six-track EP blends jazz and house and features experimental highlights from the Trash Archives, which is a collection of 99 tracks available for free on Bandcamp. All pieces were recorded live in the studio utilising, on the whole, analogue gear that best shows off the duo's raw and unfiltered creativity. From the opening jazz dance of '40' to the closing jazz-funk-techno of '57' this is a beguiling collection.

Circus Retreat (feat Samii) (4:40)
Circus Retreat (dub mix) (3:51)
London Boogie 7 (4:15)
Shrug!! (3:30)
Review: Premium jazzdance from London's 2000Black in collaboration with soulful vocalist Samii; 'Circus Retreat' and its instrumental version both aim squarely for the rond-point of the big smoke's essence, channelling a sense of respite and sense-making of the anxieties of now, the "continuous confusion that surrounds us today". The lyrics affirm the unfairness of modern urban experience with a joyois irony, with lyrics like "it's not fair" and "I can't feel my feet" gliding spiritedly above a sparky broken beat peppered with sunny soul-jazz ornaments. Then, on the B, there's 'London Boogie', which swaps out the swatches to reflect more of a purple tinge by way of rhythmic Rhodeses and cutoff-filtered stabs; and 'Shrug!!', more of a chiptuney retreat into digital dance-space.

Criogenesys (7:46)
Review: Italian ensemble 291out are known for many things, though it's their love of dadaist ideas and mind-bending jazz-funk fusion that linger in the memory. They rather enjoy collaborating with others, too. Having previously released a hook-up with Bop on Early Sounds, they've now joined forces with Ivan "Flyme" Cibien as 291outer space. The result is a deliciously out-there and intergalactic set of sparkling, synth-laden epics that variously draw inspiration from Italian futurism, jazz-funk, classic sci-fi, organic house, ambient jazz soundscapes and cosmic disco. To enhance the EP's star gazing credentials, closing cut "Criogenesys" features a spoken word vocal that tells the (imagined) tale of a particularly memorable voyage into deep space.

Review: We've long felt that there's something in the water down in Melbourne. Australia's second city is home to a surprisingly high number of talented producers, musicians and DJs. The latest outfit primed for international success is 30/70, a nine-piece collective that's has been doing its thing since the middle of the decade. Elevate, their first 12" for Rhythm Section International, offers an expansive showcase for their genre-bending, fusion-heavy style, where bustling jazz instrumentation and seriously soulful vocals are effortlessly blended with elements of Afrobeat, jazz-funk, broken beat, hip-hop and hazy downtempo grooves. It's a deliciously warm and summery set of tracks, all told, suggesting that 30/70 will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Tastes Like Freedom (Chaos In The CBD remix) (5:43)
Tastes Like Freedom (Tornado Wallace Red Face remix) (8:21)
Tastes Like Freedom (Yu Su Midnight Blossom remix) (4:45)
Review: This is a genuinely excellent remix package, with a quartet of hugely talented artists taking it in turns to provide interesting, mostly floor-friendly revisions of 30/70's warming, jazz-funk-meets-soul jam 'Tastes Like Freedom'. Chaos in the CBD steps up first, re-imagining the track as a jazzy slab of sun-kissed electro bliss, before Carista smothers the band's original drums in moody, foreboding chords, psychedelic acid lines and oodles of delay and reverb. Tornado Wallace channels the spirit of Laurent Garnier's 'Man With The Red Face' - and the St Germain material that the French DJ championed on his F Communications label - on a superb, slow-building deep house anthem in the making, while Yu Su's EP-ending 'Midnight Blossom' remix is a warming, intoxicating downtempo delight.

Little Techno (2:24)
Fly (4:14)
Hope (feat Takuya Kuroda) (6:12)
Broken (6:23)
Two Nil (5:19)
Review: 44th Move is a brand-new project from two experienced British musicians, jazz drummer Richard Spaven and regular Jordan Rakei collaborator Alfa Mist. Their self-titled debut EP has a real "spring-fresh" feel, with the pair offering up a warm, breezy and often summery take on jazz informed by broken beat, jazz-funk and downtempo grooves. Highlights are plentiful, from the hazy, live broken beat spirituality of "Fly" and the blossoming brilliance of "Hope" featuring Takuya Kuroda, where a poetic spoken word vocal and squally trumpet solos catch the ear, to the Kaidi Tatham/Dego style Rhodes-powered goodness of "Broken" and the laidback lusciousness of EP-closer "Two Nil".

I Can't Help Myself (6:04)

Sunshine (4:36)
Review: The 77 Karat Gold duo, Tokyo's answer to Floating Points and Four Tet, return to their native Jazzy Sport with a follow-up EP to 2013's My Love, and we're treated with a similar sort of jazzy, broken beat swagger spanning a plethora of styles and influences. "We Click The Time", for instance, takes organic clap percussions and lays over a winding piano line which soon transforms into a twisted, off-kilter house groove for the late hours. On the flip, "I Can't Help Myself" switches things up entirely by laying down an EBM kinda vibe, Nitzer Ebb influences coming through wonderfully, mashed up with a hip hop sensibility and an industrial flavour - the B-side is actually our personal favourite and it comes warmly tipped... Check it!

Jazz Ascension (reissue)

Jazz Ascension (Red Soul mix) (8:52)
Jazz Ascension (Red dub) (8:59)
Jazz Ascension (Hard dub) (8:04)
Jazz Ascension (Washapella) (1:53)
Review: On the long-serving deep house label's latest reissue, Large Music takes us back to 1997 and one of the most beloved (and these days, hard to find) EPs by Washington, D.C duo 95 North (AKA Doug Smith and Richard Payton). As it did first time around, the EP contains four contrasting versions of 'Jazz Ascension'. The EP-opening 'Red Soul Mix' lives up to its name by wrapping breezy flutes, syynths, pianos and spoken word samples around a bumpin' bassline and classic-sounding US deep house beats, whilst the 'Red Dub' delivers a stripped-back and groove-focused take on the same musically expansive mix. Over on side two, the slightly darker and more bass-heavy 'Hard Dub' compares favourably to the then contemporaneous work of fellow Washington, D.C-duo Deep Dish. A handy, spoken word 'Washapella' rounds of an essential reissue.

Keep It Together (Jam 5) (3:42)
Down & Dirty (Jam 2) (5:40)
Feel No Fear (Jam 1) (5:21)
Review: Soon to be followed by two more from the mighty Ratio - ACR:EPC and ACR:EPR - EPA is the opening chapter in a triptych born from nothing. Or at least no fixed plan or specific agenda. A day spent jamming in the studio with close friend of the band and regular vocal collaborator, Denise Johnson, the recordings here and on the pair still to come represent the work they did that day, shortly before the world lost the woman in question forever.

Passing away in July 2020, well before her time, this is ACR paying tribute to another integral part of the Manchester music Factory. From the hypnotic and woozy 'Wonderland', where Donna Summer meets acid jazz, to the more straight-laced disco material - delivered with an edge you'd expect in terms of instrumentation and vocals - EPA is a fitting way to honour her legacy.

Review: Abacus (Austin Bascom) is a household name in the Chicago house and techno scene for over 30 years now. He has been on some of the best labels of all time like Prescription, Fragile, Balance and Guidance records. As you can imagine, Collectors Edition Vol 1 is full of classy house music to say the least. 'Chi-Town Stories' is a blend of super smooth and uplifting prime time floor business. We absolutely think you will adore this track. 'The Mourning Sun' is a stunning ambient house beauty that will have you dancing with your eyes-closed. 'Hygge' finishes things off on a sexy house vibe. There is really something for everyone on this. Abacus stands for quality for those who know.

Review: Multi-instrumentalist Abase and drummer/producer Ziggy Zeitgeist come together for this fantastic collaboration, which explores deep grooves tinged with everything from jazz to psyche, funk to afro. The voice of the South African singer Dumama lends epic cut 'Body Mind Spirit' a rare spirituality while on 'Elevation #1-2', it is more a deeply inward mood that melts your heart. There is a brilliant looseness to 'Phoenix Rising' as its drums and bass percolate like coffee, while 'Nuit Des To'eres' closes with a broken rhythm that keeps you every much on your toes.

Notturno Italiano (Ron Trent dub remix) (7:28)
Review: Mario Acquaviva's 1983 jam 'Notturno Italiano' is a hugely sought after Italian boogie gem. Mother Tongue have dug it out the archives and enlisted some key names to offer up reworks and reconstructions, with Azymuth's Alex Malheiros and Daniel Maunick going first. They offer vocal and instrumental versions with life-affirming jazz Rhodes and cool, seductive rhythm sections that take you into the cosmos. Eternal deep house hero Ron Trent then does his escapist and spiritual thing on a lush and star-gazing dub that transcends genre. All three of these are irresistible.

Review: Admin's 'Mystical Circles 02' delivers two vibrant tracks that embody the essence of dancefloor-ready disco and funk. On Side-1, 'Three Eight Four' kicks off with infectious tribal drum fills and funky bass licks, accentuated by a commanding saxophone that invites listeners to groove. Its lively energy makes it a standout choice for any party. Flipping to Side 2, 'Ionosphere' continues the momentum with wicked bass notes and a stunning groove, complemented by powerful horn arrangements that elevate the track's dynamic feel. This release perfectly blends disco house with jazz funk elements, making it an essential addition to any DJ's set. Mystical Circles 02 is a celebration of sound that is sure to get everyone on their feet.

Review: Many Hands is a fresh label helmed by Jona Jefferies and Kava that here kicks out an eclectic EP with four tracks from various members of its musical family. Dan Aikido opens with '0800 TXT4 Herb,' a smooth fusion piece that builds a laid-back groove, blending fretless bass, jazzy keys and soulful vocals all reminiscent of Rare Silk's 'Storm.' Ernie Ruso's 'Stroke It' offers slow, sensual r&b infused with P-funky wah-wah effects while DJ Nomad's 'African Boy' brings upbeat pop house next to funky organ and a female reggae MC.Jefferies' closer 'A Change Will Come' samples Dr. Martin Luther King Jr with a rave-inspired beat and soulful piano. Cracking stuff.

Afro Discoteca (Jolly Mare Lifting) (5:44)
Afro Darkness (LUCA Quirky version) (6:03)
Review: Back in 2017, Four Flies Records unearthed and released a previously unheard "Afro-cosmic funk" EP from Italian soundtrack and library music legend Alessandro Alessandroni. Three years on, they've decided to give the 1978 recording the remix treatment. Bolissa and guests Calibra 35 kick things off with a densely percussive, out-of-this-world take on "Afro-Voodoo", before Pad re-imagines "Afro Darkness" as a chugging chunk of beatdown-disco laden with colossal chords, arpeggio bass and intergalactic electronics. Over on side B the "Jolly Mare Lifting" version of "Afro Discoteca" is a veritable leftfield disco stomper notable for its low-slung bass and spacey Moog lines, while Luca's "Quirky Version" of "Afro Darkness" is the kind of hallucinogenic, Marimba-tinged number that you can imagine Daniele Baldelli playing at the Cosmic Club circa 1981.

Make It Feel More (6:20)
Perfect Direction (6:01)

The Beat Goes On (7:24)
Review: Italian disco DJ and producer Corrado Alunni shares his latest nu-disco soul nostrum, 'Make It Feel More', which, owing to the title, is an EP whose aim is to enliven the largely electronic and mechanistic bent of nu-disco with a good bit of live-recorded pizzazz. Such is heard on the title track, which moves naturally through both augmented and diminished electric piano cadences, not to mention slap basses, to be poised against the beats. Then 'Perfect Direction' brings the boughed basses and disco hits to a new layer of chill; with this, and the ensuing 'Keep Moving', it feels as if we've kept finding new rooms, in which new room contains a new type of hors d'oeuvre to try. 'The Beat Goes On' closes on a snappier and vinyl-driven vexation, perfect for the snakier kind of dancer.

Keep Coming (Brenk Sinatra remix) (4:23)
Review: Some 18 months after it appeared on Amp Fiddler's ace "Amp Dog Knights" LP, "Keep Coming" is given the remix treatment by a quartet of hugely talented producers. The headline rework comes from Ninja Tune signee Jayda G, whose effortlessly soulful version not only makes great use of the Detroit veteran's brilliant vocals and keys, but also flits between smoky deep house and sweaty, percussive madness. Elsewhere, Jahn Cloud and Meftah offer up some sweet post R&B beats, Julian Dyne re-casts it as a Latin-tinged chunk of beatdown brilliance and Brenk Sinatra does his best impression of Motor City beat-makers Platinum Pied Pipers.

Review: Oh my Lord, it's a new Mahogani twelve inch which has taken us by complete surprise! Detroit's Amp Fiddler hasn't appeared on KDJ's imprint in a while, but the man is never forgotten; we know just how important he is to the label and scene, so this actually feels like a return to normality for us. "So Sweet" is remixed twice: first up, the legendary Louie Vega reframes it into a majestic slice of soulful house for the late night hours, while Waajeed drops a supremely funky and viciously seductive soul monster that easily makes for the sexiest tune available on our charts right now! There's an instrumental on the back of it, too!

The latest edition is another smoking hot three-tracker that opens up with 'She Spoke To Me', a laid-back blend of live drums and dusty snares with neat little sax motifs and a soothing vocal coo. 'Head Over Heels' finds Andres looking to a classic 80s sound for the main vocal hook and reworks it over what sounds like live MPC beats. 'Spoof' is the third and final gem here, this time with some erotic vocal pleasures and sensuous pads.

Review: Joe Armon-Jones brings a fresh layer of depth to his ever-evolving sound with 'Sorrow', a track that takes its time to breathe, much like a slow unfolding narrative. The piece moves with a deliberate grace, weaving together his distinctive jazz-infused piano work with an underlying electronic pulse. It starts subtly, slowly layering textures that push the track into deeper emotional terrain. The interplay between live drums and ambient synths creates a fluid yet focused atmosphere, reflecting the introspective mood the title suggests. With 'Sorrow', Armon-Jones proves once again that he is unafraid to let his ideas mature at their own pace, leading listeners through a rich, captivating experience.

Review: Originally released on the cult V4 Visions label in 1991 & 1994, Ashaye's 'Dreaming' and 'What's This World Coming To' epitomised the essence of street soul, a genre blending soul, r&b, and hip-hop that resonated across London's pirate radio stations in the 1990s. With the surge in UK soul's popularity in recent years, DJs and tastemakers have championed these tracks which has in turn elevated their demand and value. 'Dreaming' has become nearly unattainable on the second-hand market, while 'What's This World Coming To' commands prices upwards of L50. Snap up this fully licensed RSD release however and you will have both tracks for an affordable price.

Andrew Ashong & Theo Parrish - "Flowers" (8:55)
Andrew Ashong - "Take It Slow" (7:11)
Andrew Ashong - "The Way She Moves" (short version) (5:21)
Review: At first glance, the pairing of Forest Hill resident Andrew Ashong and Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish would seem strange. But the duo have worked together previously with the Ghanaian born vocalist (and supposed owner of a vinyl collection that would make most record shops look like a car boot sale) lending his soulful tones to Parrish's excellent nine minute plus translation of the Hot Chip and Spiritualised affiliated About Group. Whereas that collaboration was more about Ashong's voice being just one element of a production that was undoubtedly Parrish, the three tracks present on the Flowers EP look to showcase what a talent the Londoner is. Those trademark dust filled stacatto rhythms are present in the opening title track, but they never swamp Ashong's killer vocal delivery, while "Take It Slow" is bonafide D funk of the highest order. After the brutal, divisive nature of Theo's kung fu experimentalism on the Any Other Styles EP, these three tracks show him in a wholly new light and hopefully Parrish and Ashong will be making much more music together.

Dreams Of Music (5:38)
Oasis (7:33)
Slow Divers (6:50)
Libra (5:41)
Review: Some of you may remember Aura Safari's 2018 debut album on Church, an ear-catching concoction that blurred the boundaries between jazz-funk, deep house and ambient. They've been all but silent since, so this new EP for the Balearic-minded Hell Yeah Recordings label is undoubtedly long overdue. In keeping with the imprint's seductive, sun-kissed sound, the EP sees them in sunset-ready mode, making great use of mid-80s, new age ambient style synths and soft-touch grooves. Opener 'Dreams of Music' wraps sparkling FM synthesizer melodies around a tactile, downtempo house groove, while 'Oasis' is a lusciously horizontal float through glistening Balearic boogie. Elsewhere, they give dub an ambient twist on 'Slow Divers', while 'Libra' is a sparkling, warm, positive and smile-inducing chunk of horizontal jazz-funk loveliness.
