Review: Mississippi have unearthed a lost classic from what is widely considered Ethiopia's 'golden age' of music before an authoritarian crackdown on arts and culture in the 70s. Aselefech Ashine and Getenesh Kebret perform a captivating duet over the distinctive sound of Ethic jazz - fans of Mulatu Astatke will instantly find themselves on familiar ground here, but it's the singers' voices which truly shine. While Beauties was a hit upon release, it was soon quashed by the Derg regime, and has since been out of print. It's been carefully remastered and presented with its stunning artwork intact - a true gem for anyone enthralled with the unique sound incubated in Ethiopia in the mid-20th Century.

Review: After time spent whipping up singles for Moodmusic and My Best Friend amongst others, Maurice Aymard makes the leap to the long-player with a selection of jams that reflect his propensity for live instrumentation and thoroughly musical constructs within the disco-inflected realms of house music. As if Metro Area were played out by hand, tracks such as "Home" groove hard on plush live bass lines, poignant Rhodes chords and romantic lead synths. Gui Boratto turns up to chip in to "Colours & Drops" with its more prominent techy backbone, but that's offset by the non-dancefloor roll of "1994". It's a diverse album that provides the perfect platform for a skilled craftsman to explore, er, his craft.

Review: Big Strick's latest full-length offering on his own 7 Days Entertainment label is a family affair, mixing tracks from the veteran Detroit producer with similarly deep and woozy jams from his 16 year-old son Tre Strickland, AKA Generation Next. The father-and-son team's approach to house - wringing atmospheric soul from bubbling rhythms, warm chords and blazed melodies - is surprisingly similar, as shown by the two deep, jazz-flecked collaborations showcased here. Elsewhere, both impress with their individual contributions, with Strickland Junior's slap bass-infused deep head-nodder "Flynn's" and sweet, winding "Mo Money" standing out.

Review: Jules Buckley is a Grammy award-winning composer, curator and conductor who has linked up with long time collaborative partners Chris Wheeler, Heritage Orchestra and percussion collective Ghost-Note for this lively new full length. The record has been two years in the making and pays homage to the pillars of hip hop and mainstays of the breaking scene, but with plenty of added flair. There are plenty of dance floor ready breaks, as well as more airy and upbeat soul groovers like the excellent 'Space Funk.' Though the backbones of these tunes follow familiar genres rules, the flair on top is what makes them so special.

Review: Those well-versed in New York jazz should recognise all of the musicians involved in this delightfully mystical collaborative album, as all have been active since the 1970s or early '80s. For the uninitiated, the all-star "supergroup" behind "Welcome Adventure" is made up of legendary drummer Gerald Cleaver, woodwind and brass master Daniel Carter (tenor sax, trumpet, flute), bassist Willian Parker and pianist William Parker. The resultant music is mostly magical, with highlights including the joyous, ever-building excitement of opener "Majestic Travel Energy" (a whirlwind of jaunty sax lines, bright piano solos, frisky drums and undulating double bass), and epic flipside cut "Ear-regularities" (an (at times) discordant and dystopian free-jazz number that rewards those who play close attention.

Review: Growing Bin welcomes a tantalising combination from Cass and Gianni Brezzo. Cass has been busy working with the likes of Wolf Muller and releasing on Into The Light and Emotional Response, while Brezzo has already made a splash with his sole previous release on Dorfjungs. Their collaboration has a dreamy Fourth World flavour, skirting ambient moods but refraining from mere wallpaper defaults to throw up some gorgeous pieces rich in organic resonant tones as much as synthesized bliss. There are more pronounced rhythm tracks, and some pure floaters, making for a thoroughly balanced and wholly nourishing listen - just the kind of quality you would expect from Growing Bin.

Review: Legendary jazz man and truly free spirited musical maestro Don Cherry joined up with Swiss pianist and composer George Gruntz and his group in Tunisia and Germany in May and September 1969 to record this. It brings together two powerhouses with North-African flavoured deep jazz results featuring piano, cornet, flute and celeste mixed up with various different reeds players as well as a selection of traditional instruments such as the bendir, ney, bagpipes, tabla and darbouka. Review: Given his long-standing obsession with film soundtracks, it's little surprise to see Cinematic Orchestra chief J Swinscoe delivering another project with strong audio-visual credentials. In Motion No. 1 is the first in a series of "re-imaginings" of soundtracks to short avant garde films from Swinscoe and friends. While there's a danger that such high concept work could be either pretentious or dull, for the most part In Motion succeeds. That's due in no small part to the talents of the producers and composers involved. There's a fragile beauty to the offering of Grey Reverend, while the two collaborations between Dorian Concept and Tom Chant (particularly "Dream Work", which sounds like the Orb with a string quartet) are simply magical.

Review: Balearic DJs Chris Coco and George Solar have been making tunes together fora couple of years after first meeting at Ibiza Sonica radio. They soon hit it off in person and in the studio, so now we get their first album, Island Vibrations. Solar is an accomplished percussionist so he and Chris made a list of rhythms around which to loosely build each track with some of those used including Nyabinghi, Guaguanco, One Drop and Algaroba. Most were record in Ibiza with added bass from Fly and lots of organic synth work embellishing each one into this lush collection of fresh downtempo and chill out sounds.

Review: Auerbach's Garden is a dope new record from producer Grubby Pawz from East Boston. For it he has linked up with talented lyricist Codenine from Lynn, Massachusetts, and the results pay homage to two basketball legends, Kevin McHale and Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics. The sound is perfectly warm and soulful with dusty beats and a lo-fi, crackling old vinyl aesthetic that means it could be 30 years old as much as brand new. Aged samples are well chosen and well deployed and guests like Tragic Allies leader Estee Nack, Long Island MC SmooVth and hotly tipped rapper SullyNomad and The Egg McMuffin of Beards from Boston all feature.

Review: Long-established Italian producer Nicola Conte started working with jazz trombobist Gianluca Petrella back in 2017. In the years since, they've released a string of singles that fuse contemporary house sounds with the rhythms and musical styles of Africa. Here they present their collaborative debut album, People Need People, an effortlessly soulful affair that draws deeply on the pair's joint love of deep jazz-funk (see 'Hold On To Your Dreams') and the funk-fuelled goodness of Afrobeat ('Nigeria'). Throw in versions of those previously released singles (think 'African Spirits' and 'New World Shuffle' for starters), and you've got a highly entertaining full of high-quality musicianship and plenty of life-affirming melodic motifs.

Review: In 1969 Nancy Dupree was running an after school music program in Rochester, New York. She helped the kids in the program write songs that related to there own experiences and feelings. The results are presented on this LP, and they are really something else. There are black power anthems, odes to stealing candy, a beautiful tribute to James Brown and an even more beautiful tribute to Martin Luther King. Not a novelty record with kids being goofy but rather a heartfelt work of art, Nancy Dupree sensitively accompanying the kids singing on piano. A real classic.

Review: What happens when you pair up noted UK sound experimentalist Mark Fell with Gabor Lazar, a Budapest-based musician who has exhibited an equally adventurous streak through his body of work to date. That's the motivation behind the latest release from Manchester's ace The Death of Rave label, The Neurobiology Of Moral Decision Making, which sees Fell and Lazar collaborate on ten hyperkinetic untitled tracks which draw out maximum sonic impact from a shared minimalist approach. If you were a fan of Fell's Sensate Focus series for Editions Mego a few years back you should definitely check out this album!

Review: Respected UK jazz keyboardist Greg Foat and ambient legend Gigi Masin started piecing together the music for Dolphin during the lockdown years of 2021, developing their collaborative album online before committing to final recording sessions when they were able to convene at the Chale Abbey Studios on the Isle Of Wight. As you might well expected, there's a sumptuous, refined quality to the music the two have conjured up on this release for Strut, taking in mellow jazz and ambient with elevated musicality at the core. With additional instrumental contributions from the likes of Mosesy Boyd, Siobhan Cosgrove and Tom Herbert, it's a richly satisfying listen from beginning to end.

Review: Here's something rather unusual: a reissue of two tracks from experimental New Zealand outfit From Scratch's 1983 12" 3 Pieces From Gung Ho 1,2,3D, plus a trio of contemporary translations. On the A-side of record one you'll find two of From Scratch's eccentric originals, which were created using "tuned PVC pipes, drums, chimes" and "whizzer drone" (nope, we've no idea either). Fundamentally, these are loose, languid, tribal-inspired percussion works created using custom-made instruments. It's perhaps fitting that one of the standout interpretations comes from percussion-obsessed, polyrhythmic techno specialist Don't DJ. His epic, hypnotic and trippy version is joined by a woozy cover from Japan's Goat and a drowsy, heavily electronic, ambient influenced translation by the Utena Kobayashi Group.
