White Hot
Cat: JAL 287V. Rel: 15 Nov 18
Basement Freaks - "White Hot" (feat Kylie Auldist - Basement Freaks remix) (3:39)
John Turrell - "Won't Get Fooled Again" (Basement Freaks remix) (4:20)
Review: Fizzing funkateers Basement Freaks can usually be relied upon to bring the dancefloor goods. That's certainly the case on this dancefloor-focused seven-inch. On the A-side they rework one of their own classic cuts, offering a punchier and heavier take on 2016 Kylie Auldist collaboration "White Hot". Rich in flash-friend funk guitars, crunchy breaks and life-affirming horns, their new revision is undoubtedly more DJ-friendly than the original album version. Turn to the flip to hear their tidy new take on Smoove collaborator John Turrell's 2013 cut "Won't Get Fooled Again", which they cannily refurbish as a wobble bass-propelled chunk of P-funk flavoured dancefloor soul.

CRK - "Basse Music (No Jungle)" (6:51)
Jonquera - "Findus" (5:16)
Lastrack - "Axel Phif" (part 2) (5:30)
Jean Redondo - "Gen" (5:01)
Review: More spatial exorcisms from the BFDM family. New and old faces alike, all French, it's the label's broadest and heaviest V/A wax to date. Basses Terres takes us deep in the machine with a well oiled slo-mo pneumatic break, Comic Sans-slinger C.R.K cooks up a spicy gumbo of militant apocalypse electro while Jonquera continues the electroid theme with a devilish pitched snare roll and wry synth slap bass pops and twang. Elsewhere Lastrack insists we travel to Jupiter by way of the Amazon while Daxyl's Jean Redondo closes the show on a schizoid broken techno freak out. Stark.

Funkanomics - "Backyard Baby"
JFB & Dancefloor Outlaws - "Israelites"
Timothy Wisdom - "Mama Said"
Tom Drummond - "Pressure Cooker"
Review: A fine four-pack of party treats here as the Ghetto Funk family gather for a range of vibes. Funkanomics take the lead with a subtle funk jam that develops subtly into a killer slap bass jam. JFB & Dancefloor Outlaws, meanwhile, flip the switch with a tongue-in-cheek D&B reboot of Desmond Decker that's ideal for lighting up the moodier 170 floors. Elsewhere Timothy Wisdom applies his nu-funk technique to Magic Mike while Tom Drummond takes a well-known Mylo vocal and gives it a really cool lo-fi early breakbeat flavour that sits somewhere between early Cut La Roc and even earlier Chemical Brothers. Not a dull moment throughout, the Ghetto Funk crew deliver once again.

Badboe - "Show Me Ghetto"
Chris Awesome - "Payback"
Nick Fonkynson - "D-Funk"
Funk Ferret - "Get Back To Funk"
John Farruggio - "Move Your Feet" (VIP bonus track)
Review: Boogie Boutique have only had one year in the game, and in that time they've smashed the Juno Download sales charts with their digital releases. To celebrate their first birthday, they've dipped their toes into the glorious world of vinyl with this double 12" with seven of the label's finest tracks to date plus one exclusive. The first 12" features Hayz' UB40 sampling "Ghetto Rat" and Ninelives The Cat's "Let Me In", (a brilliant fusion of "Be Good To Me" and "Cross The Tracks"), whilst the flip features Kid Stretch's "Get Down To The Funky Sound", featuring a cheeky Destiny's Child sample amongst its old school hip-hop good time feel, and Badboes' "Show Me Ghetto", an infectious rework of Robin S' 90s classic "Show Me Love", featuring numerous funk-acid tweaks. The second 12" meanwhile features Chris Awesome's bootleg of The Bees' "Payback", a heady mix of psychedelic rock and old school funk, and Nick Fonkynson's "D-Funk" featuring some heavy Wurlitzer solo action, and on the flip side, Funk Ferret's massive "Get Back To Funk" and John Farrugio's rework of Junior Senior's "Move Your Feet" - if this doesn't get the dancefloor going, nothing will. Make no mistake, this release is big!

Jarren - "Summertime In The 323" (4:52)
Hanna - "Prayin'" (6:37)
Zopelar - "Caminhos Abertos" (5:50)
Review: We're surprised that the superhero league The Jazz Avengers aren't more spoken about: the idea seems so familiar yet uncannily unknown, we wonder if the notion of a superhero troupe composed of entirely of Black jazz musicians would've been too disturbing for the US Empire not to suppress. Taking after the idea, Bryan Hervieu's 'Jazz Avengers' EP is an elegant quadruplet of boat-rocking house beats, holding more sway in the domain of vibe than they do in the way of big generic ideas. Igaxx and DJ Dreamboy's 'Through The Night' and 'New Life' move at similar tempi yet vibe at different freqs, the former waxing cowbell and dusky padwork, and the latter serving a relatively purist, calculative 808 jam energy. Jarren's 'Summertime In The 323' segues quite seamlessly out from this session mood, though it does add some surreal, pitch-convected plucks; Hanna's 'Prayin'' is the only soul curveball, its syncopated, pre-one DX7 E-Piano chord preset mixed to an impeccable, gut-churning quality.

Review: Reel People Music breaks new ground, in more ways than one, with the launch of fresh compilation series Broken, Deep & Dope. A spin-off from acclaimed compilation brand Soulful, Deep & Dope - introduced back in 2015 - this new series sees the much-loved independent imprint pushing further at the boundaries of soulful music. All with that customary Reel People feeling. Broken, Deep & Dope 2024, the series' first instalment, unleashes 20 superlative examples of the soulful 'bruk' (broken beat), nu beat and nu jazz sound that has so innovatively informed contemporary dancefloors around the world since its inception back in late '90s West London.

JMekka & DJ Mutiny - "Dreams Come True" (JMekka remix)
Review: iBreaks head man JMekka has spent too long away from the studio of late building up the label, but thankfully he's found time to blast out a fresh new pair of techy breakbeat gems, led by "Shine", which has a huge rolling bottom-end bounce to it. The drums are tight as hell too, with some seriously fresh programming and a dubby vocal bringing it all in for the win. Also included is a new reworking of DJ Mutiny's classic tune "Dream Come True", done with a tech-funk sheen and another fiery vocal which is dropped almost acapella at one point for some guaranteed hands-in-the-air moments.

J-ZBEL - "Selecta (Neuneu Anthem #5)" (4:42)
Low Jack - "Ice Formula Riddim" (3:50)
U-202 - "Whistler (Edit X)" (3:41)
Review: "Rends L'argent" ("give the money back") became the Clarion call of anti-corruption protesters during the 2017 French general election campaign. It would be slightly misleading to say that this split 12" from the consistent Brothers From Different Mothers is a politically-charged affair, but there's certainly anger to be detected amongst the four fantastic tracks on show. Check, for example, the long and foreboding build-up, poignant electronics and booming hardcore/jungle revivalism of J-Zbel's opener "Nik Molina" and similarly inclined "Selecta". Or, for that matter, the disenchantment fuelling Low Jack's "Ice Formula Riddim", where melancholic chords wrap around tumbling melody lines and occasional bouts of post-dancehall drums. As for U-202's bleak and distrorted techno closer, "Whistler (Edit X)", it feels like the producer has already lost all hope.

Review: Zesty goodness... Daniel Pringle dons his Jaffa cap and digs through his last few years of prolific dispatches for this special wax outing. Besides the fluttering jungle dream 'Zap Ting II', all of these have been cooked up since 2020 but can now be felt with all the weight of the machines Jaffa baked them on. With vibes ranging from the twinkling cosmic 'Noon' to the much direct and dubby four-to-the-floor moment, these six grooves capture his tasty range and wholesome futurism. More than your recommended five-a-day.

In The Morning (4:29)
Etafe (5:42)
Rudiman (4:47)
Review: Long-serving rave revivalist The Jaffa Kid (real name Daniel Pringle) is scarily prolific. He's seemingly able to conjure up acid-fired breakbeat and techno bangers seemingly at will. Here he returns to the mighty 030303 imprint with a speedy sequel to his 2020 mini-album Polysynthesis. He begins with a chunk of trance-inducing, spacey techno excellence - the gorgeous, ethereal and life-affirming hypnotism of 'Amazon' - before doffing a cap to classic 1990s IDM on 'Drum Mode'. 'In The Morning' sounds like a melodic techno head's take on Deep Dish classic 'Stay Gold' (that's a good thing, by the way), 'Etafe' is a dreamy breakbeat house treat, and 'Rudiman' is an immersive, ear-catching slab of 90s drum & bass revivalism with added ambient melodies and deep space chords.

Review: Jaisiel distills the magic of his previous releases on this colour and kaleidoscopic new outing It's A Pleasure which really has something for everyone. 'Nada Que Ver' is refracted new school electro-disco-tech with warm synth smears and vocoder vocals bring future vibes. The Lipelis ADHdance mix then reworks it into a pumping house cut with sensuous vocals and 'El Amanecer' (Tenerife '89 mix) is a blissed out and sun down Balearic sound. Last of all is 'Sobre Cien,' an old school broken beat jam that will get you partying like it was 1989.

Review: Leo James is back on his own Body Language label with a sixth tasteful take on breakbeat-driven sounds. He shows his range here with different grooves all exploring different moments. 'Better Days' is one that has you gazing off to the middle distance, lost in the rueful pads. 'Olive Grove' is a slowed-down and dubbed-out sound with lots of lovely reverb and 'Burst The Gates' is a deep digi-dub style cut with angelic vocals. 'A Thousand White Kites Flying High Above The Sea' is the ambient laced downtempo closer for late-night dreaming.

Break Mode (5:57)
Break Mode (Voigtmann remix) (7:12)
Review: Robert James kicks off his Body Movement label with a tasteful trip into the realms of mystical electro and emotive techno. "Revenge Of The Wasp" draws from the Drexciya playbook with its snappy electro funk rhythm section and sleek future-shock pads. "Life Grooves" takes a tougher approach, channeling bleep and acid with an upferrit attitude and some soothing pads for an atmospheric counterbalance. "Break Mode" deals in some chopped up drum loops, edited to perfection and strapped to a strident tempo that should appeal to house, techno and rave-minded DJs alike. Voigtmann then drops a remix of "Break Mode" that boils the original down to a hypnotising tech house core - one for the DJs to get creative with.

Now he's back on his own label with a various artists 12" that widens the scope of the project, leading in with a collaboration from the man himself and Jack Michael - the dynamic and twisting electro funk of "B2A". Lvca & Sidd take body-popping machine music in a more minimal direction with the sleek "Chroma", while Frazer Campbell kicks off the B side with the uptempo pulse of "One Armed Bandit". North Phase flips the script with some dynamic, electronica-infused garage styles on the system-ready "Zone 1".

Funkin' (Hardy Tribute version)
Jungle DJ Tool
Review: Jamie 3:26, the Chicago house luminary, returns with the second instalment of his Danacefloor Damage series, a collection of re-rubbed disco cuts crafted with the dancefloor in mind, but possessing a depth that transcends the club. This time around, he's unearthed three gems, each an ode to his impeccable taste and his uncanny ability to breathe new life into forgotten classics. 'Flyin'' takes flight with a dizzying array of soaring strings and a groove that's as infectious as it is propulsive. 'Funkin' (Hardy Tribute Version)' pays homage to late disco/early house legend Ron Hardy, its driving bassline and soulful vocals a fitting tribute to his enduring influence. 'Jungle DJ Tool' injects a tribal energy into the mix, its percussive rhythms and hypnotic chants guaranteed to induce a state of dancefloor abandon. Jamie 3:26's edits are a masterclass in dancefloor manipulation, expertly balancing euphoric highs with moments of introspective restraint. A potent reminder that the classics never truly die when preserved in the right hands.

Review: Rinse's 20 year celebrations continue to their limited run of classic releases. And they don't come more classic than Zinc's Jammin project. Both 2001's skippy, shock-out "Kinda Funky" and 2002's thunderous roller "Go DJ" were seminal at the time, joining the dots for garage, breakbeat and house heads like very few records could. Naturally, like all Zinc productions, they've matured impeccably. 12/13 years old and still guaranteeing reloads on every occasion, these are essential if you haven't already got them.

Review: French minimal, tech and house master Janaret is back with more spaced out brilliance, this time on Shall Not Fade, one of the UK's most consistently excellent - and eclectic - labels. 'Joy & Happiness' kicks off with crispy tech beats and swirly sci-fi synths while gurgling bass works away down low. 'Silent' is a steamy brew for more peak time moments but never loses its class, and the vibes keep coming with 'Fallin' then slipping into a super cool and breezy late night deep house groove. 'Advanced' closes down with an electro-leaning rhythm that is light up by snappy snares and synth modulations.

Review: Nuremberg's Jayl Funk is a true torch-bearer for the art of funked up breaks to start a party anywhere and everywhere. He's back on Danish label Breakbeat Paradise with another sure-shot 7" of feel-good vocal grooves that should appeal to a huge spectrum of cats ready to get down, not least the A-side joint 'Shake & Boogie' with its infectiously sunny demeanour. 'Not Today' is a more disco-styled affair with snappy Philly string stabs and a slippery groove you could just sink your teeth into. Just watch out for that epic piano breakdown, it might just raise the roof off the joint.

The house they make comes with lovely retro-future feels and hints of 80s and early 90 magic. Jeff The Fool kicks off with timeless deep house and seductive French spoken words. The irresistible grooves come thick and fast from there with Scruscru & BR Selecta dropping in some kinetic 2step grooves, and dusty old and breakbeat sounds from FRR FONK come doused in synths soul. A trio of various jacking, smooth and soulful cuts see out the reverse.

Review: Chat Noir is the official imprint of Paris' Chat Noir Distribution, and will be dedicated to all shades of house music. Their inaugural release "This Is A Story" features Jeff The Fool AKA Antoine Bermann, who has been polishing his house music skills for five years now - and it's paid off!
