Review: Magic Number is Ross Hillard, a downtempo and orchestral composer whose engineering and bass playing can be heard on an array of releases, most notably for the likes of his own house favourites including Louie Vega, DJ Spen, Kerri Chandler, Lay-Far and Atjazz. Now debuting his first record on the latter artist's eponymous label, Badly Written Songs sounds like a slice of humble pie, but it's actually well-thought out title: in Hillard's own words, "(it's) a tongue-in-cheek reference to how transient electronic music can be." Thus, writing songs in this genre might not have been the most sensible and sustainable idea - but we all love house music, so we put everything into it, hoping that people don't discard it too soon. True to an engineer's tastes, the album is ultra-dynamic and bright throughout, serving up a consistent guest-vocal steeze reminiscent of Charles Webster or Herbert's gravitas.

Hotel PM is a psychedelic exploration of disco and modern electronica from the Brooklyn-based musician and co-leader of Underground System. Review: Under his Mild Minds alias, Benjamin David has won plenty of plaudits for his slim body of work to date - not least from the GRAMMY committee, who has previously nominated him for various awards. Gemini is his second album and sees him return to Foreign Family Collective - the imprint which released his earliest work - following a spell at Ninja Tune offshoot Counter Records. Blending elements of two-step, UK bass, deep house, eyes-closed 21st century electronic pop, synth-wave and cut-up vocal sample trickery, the album is accessible, energetic and impressively well produced, with a handful of carefully selected guest and collaborators pitching in to mix things up now and then.

Review: Al most ten years in the making, Tom Noble's debut album is that most rare of beasts: a decidedly dusty and loose-limbed revivalist disco album that genuinely sounds like a long-lost 'private press' set from the turn of the 1980s. Noble is a renowned crate-digger, DJ and disco-boogie specialist, so it's no surprised to find that the songs and instrumentals on show, which also offer nods to jazz-funk and dancefloor soul, is exceptionally well observed and painstakingly crafted via the contributions of many guest musicians and vocalists. For proof of the set's majesty, get your ears around the celebratory and synth-speckled 'Times Are Changin', deep disco treat 'Holding On', head-nodding soul slow jam 'Diamond Eyes' and warm, heady closing cut 'Moving Away'.

Review: Some For This And That is the new album from house royalty Timmy Regisford on the legendary Nervous Records. It finds him mixing up his signature house sound with Afro, r&b and more to make for a widescreen and timeless record packed with big vocal moments, deeper beats and plenty of soulful sounds. 'Heaven 10 Zillion' is one of those with its warming chords and rolling drums, while 'Stay With Me Tonight' cuts a little more loose with some skyward synths bringing more edgy club-ready energy. 'Khannyisa' is another standout with its Afro drums and organic percussion.

Review: Romy Madley Croft continues to explore her solo career - as seems to be the inevitable prophesied path of of The xx member trifecta - with Mid Air. Collabs with Fred Again and Beverly Glenn-Copeland here thematically match Romy's implicit vision: to exploring the ever-thinning dividing line between heartfelt rave music and sounds for personal, teary-eyed catharsis moments. Edging ever-more into a more party-pop direction (contrastion to her prior projects' enduring indie tinge), Romy gets far trancier with things on the likes of 'Strong' and 'The Sea', even verging on Eurodance in short bursts. Review: It feels like Romy's debut album has been a long time coming, but it's absolutely worth the wait. Stepping to one side of the imposing shadow of her band The xx, the world-famous singer-songwriter has taken her time to deliver something sincere and vulnerable which opens up her world and celebrates the places she's found sanctuary. Having worked extensively with production wonder boy Fred Again, writing for other artists, the two finally funnelled their creative chemistry into songs for Romy which now result in a perfect nugget of pop-club with aeons of space for all the feelings to swirl. It's immediate and catchy, but elegant in equal measure, and certain to lodge Romy in the pantheon of modern pop titans for sensitive souls.
