I Choose You
I Choose You (double 12")
Cat: VR 170. Rel: 15 Dec 16
I Choose You (Louie Vega Dance Ritual mix) (11:23)
I Choose You (Louie Vega Mid Tempo mix) (9:17)
I Choose You (Louie Vega dub) (8:47)
I Choose You (Vega Tosca Solo Mid Tempo mix) (8:48)
Review: "I Choose You" was initially featured on Foreign Land, the debut album from gospel-soul trio 3 Winans Brothers. Two years on, Louie Vega has decided to give it the remix treatment, serving up four versions across two slabs of wax. He begins with the Dance Ritual Mix, where the trio's smooth vocals - and the impassioned backing singing of Karen Clarke Sheard - ride a shuffling, Latin-influenced house groove. The Mid Tempo Mix offers a musically richer, groovier interpretation, while the Dub focuses more on Clarke Sheard's diva style vocalizing, jazzy piano solos, and Vega's tasty, floor-friendly beats. Speaking of solos, the Masters of Work man cannily brings them to the fore on the closing Axel Solo Mid Tempo Mix.

I Choose You (Louie Vega dub) (8:48)
I Choose You (Vega Tosca Solo Mid Tempo mix) (8:48)
Review: The 3 Winans Brothers served up their Foreign Land album, from which this single is taken, in 2014. But it could as well as be from any of the proceeding three decades. It is life-affirming gospel, soul and r&b that makes perfect fodder for a remixer like Louie Vega. The gorgeous backing vocals remind in place, as do the main male voices, but the drums are either drawn out and made all the more soulful or shorted up and energised for the club across these four superb mixes. House music doesn't come more authentic or stirring than this. 838848-01

Gregory Porter - "On My Way To Harlem" (NDATL unreleased mix) (8:41)
Marvin Gaye - "Nuclear Juice" (5:30)
Review: While Chicago and Detroit will always be the most famous dance music cities in the United States, Atlanta now rightly has a claim to third spot on that list. Not least in part is that down to the work of Kai Alce and his super classy NDATL label. Its 12"s sell out in an instant and deal only in fad-free and timeless grooves. This is a special and super limited test pressing of the latest drip which is a various artists affair featuring four playful, heartfelt remixes and edits of artists like celebrated jazz crooner Gregory Porter and soul legend Marvin Gaye. Review: Given their combined talents, you'd expect any collaborative album crafted by Andrew Ashong and Kaidi Tatham to be nigh-on essential. Happily, we can confirm that Sankofa Season, their first joint album, is ruddy, bloody brilliant (as Alan Partridge might say). Richly soulful, quietly jazzy and wholeheartedly positive from start the finish, the set sees them jump between deep jazz-funk, hazy contemporary soul, jazzy broken beat, breezy Latin soul, organic deep house and immersive, slow-motion soundscapes. Throughout, Tatham's organ, keyboard and piano work is highly impressive and Ashong's vocals are every bit as sumptuous as usual. Recommended.

Kiwi - "Avocet" (7:38)
T&P Aka Tim Sweeney & Lauer - "Dance To T&P" (5:04)
Fantastic Man - "The Times We Loved & Miss" (6:23)
Review: This tasty double-pack is the result of a collaboration between self-styled "renegade art publication" Toilet Paper, Nike Lab, nomadic Internet broadcaster Automat Radio and Vinyl Factory. The basic idea was to gather together previously unheard tracks from artists based in four different countries. Italy's DJ Tennis teams up with Sebra Cruz on opener "Truth Or Consequences", layering bubbly and attractive nu-disco synths over a rubbery house rhythm. London-based rising star Kiwi explores the worlds of breezy new wave and bubbly Italo-disco on the picturesque "Avocet", while Tim Sweeney and Phillip Lauer (as T&P) channel the spirit of Metro Area and Gina X on EP standout "Dance To T&P". To round things off, Aussie Fantastic Man serves up a fiendishly fuzzy chunk of chiming synth-pop/deep house fusion.

Review: As the four-year anniversary of Frankie Knuckles' death approaches, Trax has decided to reissue Ultimate Production, a re-titled collection of some of his finest Chicago-era moments that first appeared (with a slightly different track list) in 1991. All of the Godfather of House's early must-have cuts are present - think "Your Love", "Baby Wants To Ride", "It's a Cold World" and "Waiting on an Angel" - alongside a smattering of lesser-celebrated gems and his essential remixes of Dancer's "Boom Boom" and Kevin Irving's "Children of the Night". Crucially, this time round they've decided to stretch the tracks across two slabs of wax rather than one, allowing for louder re-mastered cuts.

Subb-an & Luther Vine - "Sunday Roll Through" (7:02)
Keisuke - "Ride It Out" (6:44)
Review: It's 20 years up for London's Phonica Records, a fine place to go for a dig but also a rather good label for those who like fresh electronic sounds. They are marking the occasion with a series of samplers of what they do and this is the seance in the series. It's a global affair with artists from all over contributing, starting with man of the moment Gene on Earth and his chord-laced house bopper 'Club Jacket.' Huerta then comes through with 'Hit The Bit' which is an amped-up tech house party starter and Subb-an & Luther Vine combine for the deep and slinky sounds of 'Sunday Roll Through.' Keisuke ends things with the funky loops of 'Ride It Out.'

Review: Operating out of Rennes in France, Rutilance has worked hard to establish itself as a label of note in the deep house field of interest, whilst sticking to a close network of artists such as Sunny Galaxy and Jay Shaw as well as label boss DJ Steaw. This double pack release celebrates what has been achieved in two years of operations with a diverse selection that ranges from the dubby tones of Kicks' "Pipeline" to the even dubbier tones of Ortella's "Heartbeat", and then on to the bassy simmer of John Jastszebski's "Downtown" or the garage bump and calming tones of MArotti's "Pressure". If you're a lover of quality deep house played from the heart then there's more than enough to satisfy your appetite here.

The Speed Of Life (1:44)
Review: Dusty deep house producer K15 has previously impressed via string of fine EPs on Wotnot Music, Sound of Speed, Eglo and Wild Oats. None, though, have been quite as expansive as Speed of Life, a double 12" outing packed to the rafters with high-grade material. There's naturally much to admire throughout, from dreamy opener "Look (Beyond You)" - where jazz pianos spar with Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk synths over a sumptuous groove - and ultra-positive jazz-house wonder "This Life Is All We Have", to the early Floating Points-meets-Chez Damier shuffle of "Movements of Joy" and the toe-tapping, head-nodding bump of sparkling instrumental hip-hop closer "The Speed of Life". Arguably best of all, though, is "Truthfully", a wonderfully evocative chunk of downtempo smokiness co-produced by Kyle Hall.

The Story Of Her Life (8:16)
GWRH (7:46)
Insecurities (8:59)
Gratitude (6:49)
Yellow (6:44)
Review: Having previously only appeared on WotNot Music in the past couple of years, K15 now slides over to Wild Oats to deliver a wholly appropriate slab of fluttering house romanticism rich in Detroit dreams and Chicago cheekiness, wherever the music might have been conceived. The cheekiness is no doubt most noticeable on "GWRH" with its homage to "Gypsy Woman", turning it into a fluttering Latino house jam, but before that comes the plush bump n rub of "The Story Of Her Life". "Insecurities" gets into a sexier kind of deep house funk, which "Gratitude" dutifully carries on until "Yellow" can round the record out with some largely beatless piano business.

Right In The Dark (Robags Gerega Beulbar Secondhand)
Right In The Dark (Henrik Schwarz remix)
Review: Fritz Kalkbrenner has been pulling out some serious stuff as of late and this remix EP, taken from the outstanding Here Today Gone Tomorrow long player from 2010 is no exception; the original "Right In The Dark" accompanied by remixes from Robag Wruhme and Henrik Schwarz. As if the hooky vocals, deep and groovy musical basis of the original weren't good enough already, Robag Whrume deepens the groove with his Gerega Beulbar Secondhand version, focusing on the addictive vocal and adding a sultry touch in the way only Robag knows how - the results are flawless. Henrik Schwarz takes a contrasting approach by stripping down the vox and heightening the electronic elements into a typically mature yet thumping Schwarz sound.

Review: A compelling journey through the realms of deep house, drawing influences from Detroit, Chicago and soulful house. The first track, 'I Can Feel It (Anthony Nicholson remix)', takes center stage with its minimalistic yet devastatingly addictive bassline, sensual piano and alluring vocal, perfectly capturing the essence of deep Chicago house. The original version of 'I Can Feel It'maintains the same deep groove but adds a more house-driven energy, ensuring a difficult choice which to play in a pinch. The EP also has 'Kobe', with Dez Andres' remix bringing a raw electro beat fused with intricate, beautiful keysian innovative take that stands apart from traditional deep house. The original 'Kobe' brings the signature house vibe, rich with rhythmic depth. To close, 'Milton' offers a lush, atmospheric touch, elevating the EP to a sublime conclusion. Each track on Karma delivers a unique vibe with its rich textures and smooth, hypnotic beats.

'Snow' and 'Springwater' are twin dreams in melodic acid, ambient loopage and sonic contentment. The A-side opts for beatless rave nostalgia channelling the intent of being run through classic, high-efficiency speakers at DIY parties, while the B-side is stupid good - stupefactingly good - in its backwatery sensitivity and down, down tempo.

The Bounce (7:47)
Groove Ting (5:51)
Review: Reissued classic alert! First released by Masters At Work under their alternative Kenlou alias way back in 1995, 'The Bounce' is a classic, extra percussive slab of NYC house music that sounds just as fresh now as it did nearly 30 years ago. Presented here in remastered form, the track sees Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez and 'Lil' Louie Vega pepper a typically bouncy groove and heady, looped bassline in addictive melodic loops, trippy effects and all manner of pots-and-pans percussion sounds. Over on side B, there's a chance to cop the alternative 'Ting' mix of original B-side 'Gimme Groove', a denser and more intense late-night workout that would have sounded dope blaring out of the notoriously good soundsystem at legendary New York venue The Sound Factory (it has a slight Junior Vasquez vibe and would have neatly slipped into his sets at the time).

Review: One of the many alternate monikers of Kenny Gonzales and Louie Vega - best known as Masters At Work - the Kenlou project is still going strong, having first made its mark in 1995, though as a lesser-spotted counterpart to MAW or their infamous Nuyorican Soul project. Reflecting the more experimental edges of their pioneering house vision, the Kenlou indulges a more flatulent and tooly sound, a trend which refreshed on their latest original EP 'Moonshine', added to the esteemed MAW Records catalogue here. A casual pair of garage-house forward-marchers; filled to the brim with horn, bass and vocal samples torn from their contexts and re-collaged.

J Diggins - "Deez Disconutz" (3:14)
Review: Coming in heavy with well-known US producer King Most on the A-side, whilst J. Diggins amps up the party on the flip. 'The Panties' is, as you could expect, a 7"-ed ode to pantyhose. King Most steps in for Diggers Delights' series here, bringing a heavy house and bass punch to imbue the imminent dancefloor with love and romance, hashing out a phat contrast between pop-out soul vocals and Most's own, which are relatively carefree and evince a real sense of hustle. On the B, Diggins reinforces the obverse with a boiling of the disco stew, this time unctuously peppered with autotune and hip-soul ad-libs for good measure.

Review: ***B-STOCK: both records have slight surface marks but in working condition ***

Wild Oats dip into their archives for a much needed reissue of Kyle Hall's filter house bomb "Down!" which comes with a bonus 7"! Initially released on the WO6K 12" back in 2011 under his KMFH guise, "Down!" still easily ranks as one of Hall's finest productions, deftly weaving in some tape saturated boogie vocals amidst a wonderfully lopsided jacking groove. It's simply one of those tracks you will love to play in a set. The original flipside cut is here too, with "Xero" switching up the mode to full on carnival that's still blessed with Motor City grit. As for the 7", Our Love originally surfaced earlier this year as a treat strictly for the local wax heads, but we are happy to see it more widely available. Just listen to "Our Love" wow!

Review: The Soul in the Horn label is "a movement" with roots in New York City. It is a collaborative project from music curator DProsper and resident DJ Natasha Diggs that is now back with another party-ready 12", this time from Knevrmind. It kicks off with a rugged house cut that chops up some big Kendrick samples to make for something of an anthemic opener. 'Major Hot' then flips the script with more sun-kissed and dusty house loops that are nice and loose and 'Matters Of Time' slows it down again to late-night and loved-up dub house. An instrumental strips it back so the cosmic synths shine brighter.

Here he returns to action via a label debut on the freshly minted Chinese imprint Regret Sound. It's an attractively percussive, off-kilter and curiously psychedelic affair, with Knopha offering up two distinctively different tracks based around the same basic Afro-house style tribal rhythm track: the hallucinatory and feverish ambient house humidity of "Gym A", and the even more spaced-out, drum-heavy weird-out that is "Gym B". Bonus cut "Stretch", a drowsy, chiming and warming drift through echoing synth-ambient territory, is also superb. Recommended.

Label co-owner Gunnter rounds things off nicely with two fine tracks of his own (the piano-laden Balearic house goodness of "Chordzzz" being our pick), while those looking for something slower and baggier should head for the boogie-influenced bliss of Nephaze's "Seriously".

Review: Session Victim's Retreat label delivers a heavyweight fifth instalment of the Treats various artist series, opened by the stutter-whistling and good vibes of Jamie Lloyd's "Spiro Hustle". Session Victim's contribution is "Much Too Strong" as it's dope, deep and jammin'. Johannes Albert's provides the calypso funk as does Mr Beatnick, only in a more of an electronic fashion, plus a bit of acid. Quarion brings his signature bleepy arpeggios to Retreat which follows on from Kim Brown's starry "I Am Batman". Iron Curtis, as we knew he would, provides a fuzzy, upbeat "Love Commitment" while Robert Oh ends on a hip hop, downtempo vibe with "Blush". One of this years best various artists releases so far!

Kenlou - "Kenlou Thump" (5:14)
Review: Following a series of tweaked reissues featuring previously forgotten (and unreleased) remixes of back catalogue gems, Masters at Work offer up something even more special: a double-pack containing four tracks rediscovered in their archives last year. They begin with the bubbly, mid-tempo NYC house shuffle of 'MAW Apes Groove' - all warming organ chords, bubbly analogue bass and oddball vocal samples - before serving up the hip-swinging, sub-heavy, sax-laden bump of KenLou's 'Lost I'M Ready (Sax Dub)'. Over on the second slab of wax, 'Virus Ruff Mutes' is a locked-in slab of house hedonism marked out by a tight, looped organ stab, while 'KenLou' thump recalls the inspired, jazz-dance-friendly, Latin-tinged brilliance of 'The Nervous Track', one of their most admired cuts.

Review: Stefan Ringer is next up on FWM Entertainment US with HYMNS Volume 1, a collection of tracks that pay homage to his roots in Atlanta while also offering up his superb signature take on house. 'ATL Sh*t' kicks off and is a tribute to his formative years in the city with lots of artists from the area all adding their own experiences of the place. 'Satisfy' then features the vocal of Underground and Black talent Ash Lauryn over plenty of luscious chords while 'Crazy World' has the man himself on them and reflecting on the state of the world right now. Kareem Ali is the final collaborator and together on 'Vision,' the pair go deep into a subtly positive house sound that leads into the more hypnotic and slow motion closer. A fine ride overall.

Review: Melchior Sultana's sounds have always been the set f sunset house depths that have you dreaming of warmer climates. For this new EP on Fluid Funk, he slows it down even more and explores funk, dubby drums and meditative chords. 'Sustained' is inwardly reflective and beautiful with a subtle synth glow, then 'Fusion' has a little more swagger but no less of a magical synth shine. Kaysoul keeps the buddy, intimate house tip going with 'Let's Get Down' which is underpinned by great bass work, and 'Sea Crawl Out My Eyes' which ups the ante with crunchy hits but still nice eft and subdued chords. A Nico Lahs remix brings some steamy, tropical heat.

Vakula - "Interpretation"
Kuniyuki - "Cairn"
Red Sparrow - "Weep For Me" (short mix)
Review: Endless Flight present a second 12" shaped accoutrement to this year's addition of the I'm Starting To Feel Okay compilation, with series regular Kuniyuki joined by the uber busy Ukrainian Vakula and the lesser spotted German producer Red Sparrow. It's Vakula who opens proceedings with the cocktail jazz sprawl of "Interpretation", going freeform over a skittering house groove underpinned by typically deep levels of detail. Kuniyuki follows with the Balearic deepness of "Cairn" which finely judges the balance between the Flamenco guitar and the rasping, fizzing textures beneath. The presence of Red Sparrow is perhaps the most surprising aspect to this twelve (and indeed the accompanying compilation) with the producer absent from music for some time. "Weep For Me" is however a real highlight, expansively driving across the B Side, its momentum maintained by delightfully grumbling sub bass and vast waves of frosted textures.

Now he follows up his 2020 debut with Swells, an expansive record that also takes in synthpop, leftfield R&B and beyond. It showcases a rich array of melodies, chords and undulating arps and is defined by the lo-fi aesthetic of his CR78 drum machine. British singer-songwriter Eliza Rose features throughout the record in various forms but the highlight is the dubbed-out and diffuse 'With U'.

Review: Following a run of quietly impressive singles on Boitte Music, Nicolas Saavedra brought his Kabinett project to Internasjonal back in 2022. A couple of EPs later and the Bogota-based DJ/producer is ready to deliver his debut album. Taking cues from fellow Colombian Felipe Gordon, the tracks on offer blend vintage and contemporary synth sounds, electric piano motifs, MPC-driven lo-fi beats, a few choice samples and his own vocals to create a set of tracks that variously draw inspiration from deep house, lo-fi pop, jazz-funk and space disco. Highlights include dreamy pop number 'Volatile Love', the Prins Thomas-esque 'Owl Disco', the decidedly psychedelic and hard chugging title track, and stellar cosmic funk head-nodder 'Don't Rush'. An album that's well worth your time and money.

Review: It's sometimes hard to exactly place the music of Japanese producer Hiroshi Watanabe. Warm, melodic and unashamedly positive, it melds the relentless hypnotism (though not the sound or tempo) of trance with the wide-eyed feel of Balearica, the futurism of Detroit and the comfortable groove of deep house. Until the End of Time, his eighth album, continues this hard-to-place-but-easy-to-love approach. There are downtempo moments (see the blissful "Smile"), floor-friendly romps (the dreamy tech-jazz of "I'm Leaving Home" and bubbling futurism of "Run Through The Road In The Fog"), and cuts that are just plain gorgeous ("Inner Space", "Dear Friends").

His work as Munk on Gomma Records might be his best-known stuff at the moment but this album goes a long way to redressing that with its fresh take on disco house, experimental electro, jazz fusion and Afro-American grooves. All of that is distilled through a futuristic mix of keys, bass, synths and percussion inspired by 1970s jazz and 1980s synthwave. As such this record reflects Kapote's vision of bringing diverse musical styles together to create a positive, inclusive vibe and is own that yields more rich detail with each listen.

This time round, he's tweaked and rejigged things a little, offering a re-edited and lightly reworked '2nd Version' that arguably improves an already excellent album. For proof, checked the hushed, TB-303 sporting jazz-funk-goes-loop-house flavours of 'Jaas Func Haus', the carnival-ready, electric-piano sporting dancefloor sunshine of 'Brasiliko', the bouncy and loose-limbed excellence of 'Salvation' (whose rubbery bassline is an addictive delight), the organic 21st century jazz-funk-goes-electrofunk headiness of 'Fusion 79' and the wonderfully warming organic house delight that is 'LOVE'.

Review: Since delivering his debut album on PNN a decade ago, Matt Kent AKA Matt Karmil has proved adept at adapting the club-focused sound of his EPs to the long-playing format - as his inspired and wonderfully atmospheric sets for Idle Hands and Smalltown Supersound prove. He continues this notable run of form on this Studio Barnhus released set, crowding ultra-deep, dusty grooves in opaque chords, cut-up sample snippets, lo-fi crackle, hazy ambient textures and nods towards a myriad of ear-pleasing electronic styles and sounds. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks being the dubby, mind-altering late-night hypnotism of 'Still Something There' and the becalmed, meditative ambient deepness of superb closing cut '15 Mins' (which, confusingly, is just 13 minutes long).

Review: After impressing with 12" excursions on IBR and Beats In Space, Matt Karmil transfers to the long-playing format for the first time. The Cologne producer's distinctive take on deep house - loose but hypnotic, featuring enveloping chords, scratchy found sounds and wonky, off-kilter rhythms - certainly suits the album format, making this debut something of a surprise winner. Karmil is at his best when lacing simple, hypnotic melodies over ultra-deep grooves, as on the enticing "Live The Dream" and "Frankrike (Float)". Yet it's arguably the album's more intriguing moments - the cut-up deep techno pulse of "Holding" and dub techno-influenced "A Lot To Share" - that catch the ear the most. Either way, it's a pretty strong debut. This LP edition comes packing the album on CD too.

Review: Matt Karmil is an artist of many talents, and his adventures in sound have taken him across techno, disco, and even ambient explorations. He makes his return herein to Bristol's Idle Hands, coming through with a new album that spans just about all his skills, and can only be described as a musical mind drift - a sonic reverie, if you will. Throughout, we're presented with everything from glitchy, broken down hip hop, to shady shreds of house, and even odd and rhythmic blends of drone and Balearica. It's been on the office stereo all day here at Juno, and it might just be album of the week, in our opinion!

Review: Matt Karmil has been on fire of late, delivering killer material for Endless Flight, Studio Barnhus and Idle Hands, including a recent album for the latter that's arguably his strongest work to date. Here, he continues that fine run of form with a second full-length for Cologne stable Popnoname (his first, also untitled, dropped in 2014). Beginning with the stripped-back techno thump of "Perfect World", Karmil delivers a range of tracks that showcase his love of dusty atmospherics, dub aesthetics, club-ready rhythms and more experimental compositions. In other words, it's another fine full-length from a producer at the top of his game.

Over five years, they revisited early ideas, refining their craft to create a record that explores emotional depth beyond their club-focused tracks. Review: Two years on from his much-admired debut EP for Utopia Records, Planet Sundae co-founder Alex Kassian returns to action via a pleasingly colourful outing on Pasiphae's saucer-eyed Love On The Rocks label. In its original form, "Oolong Trance" lives up to its name, with Kassian wrapping psy-trance style acid motifs, tactile chords and restless organ stabs around a densely layered, tropical house groove. Even more celebratory and mind-altering is the accompanying "Paradise Mix" - a trance-inducing affair peppered with the kind of bold piano stabs and trippy electronic lead lines that recall early '90s sunrise parties. Arguably even better is Telephones' kaleidoscopic flipside remix, which in typical fashion turns Kassian's cut into a Balearic-minded chunk of peak-time dancefloor colour.

Review: Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez and Loie Vega continue to revisit their back catalogue, offering a mix of reissues and new editions of classics featuring previously unheard remixes. Here they treat us to previously unheard Masters At Work versions of 1995 Kenlou single 'Moonshine'. The A-side 'Remix' is a hazy roller in which short, cut-up vocal snippets, trippy minor-key riffs, one-note stabs and mutilated horn blasts ride a chopped bassline and typically bumpin' drums. As you'd expect, the flip-side dub is more stripped-back and wonky, with Kenny and Louie pushing forward effects-laden stabs, boosting the bass and adding even more delay-laden percussion. It's our pick of the pair, though both mixes are excellent.
