Review: Having already introduced us to many of their regular 'pals' - re-editors specialising in Balearic and cosmic oddities - Manchester's Drum Chums crew now wants is to meet their 'percussion pals'. They operate within similar sonic territory if this first multi-artist missive is believed, albeit with more of a penchant for dubbed-out drums. There's plenty to set the oulse racing throughout, from the metronomic dub-chug of Spice Route's incredible 'Gruler Dub' - a fine re-edit debut from the long-serving Bristol selector - and the expertly dubbed-out space disco trip that is DJ Pouffsouffle's 'Totally Manic'. Elsewhere, Manc stalwart Neil Diablo delivers the ultra-slow weird-wave pop of 'Starry Night', while Hysteric's 'Pinball' is a blue-eyed soul treat.

For something more retro futuristic and techno-house, Marvin & Guy punch in another fantastic remix for this record, giving their interpretation of 'Incivitas' a far more theatrical sound, less danceable and more thoughtful.

Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Review: Lol Hammond is a former member of Spiral Tribe and early live techno act The Drum Club who now makes music on his own as Wah Wah Planet. Back in 1990 is when he penned this fantastic five track Balearic house EP alongside Russell Crone and with female vocal contributions from Lucy Sian. It very much lay out an early blueprint for UK street soul and the opener on the A-side 'Jewel' explores a romantic theme with hooky pop lyrics. Things get more left of centre on the 'Love FXU' with three trips into a smoother sound world perfect for sun kissed island dancing and with influences ranging from early breakbeat and trip hop to elements of dancehall music.

Review: Herbie Hancock has been responsible for many era-defining records over the years - "Rockit" being a particularly good example - but few of his compositions have been quite as game changing as "Chameleon". First featured on 1973 album "Head Hunters", the 15-minute epic was revolutionary in a number of ways, not least in its use of a killer 12-note bassline, "percussive" style guitar parts and loose-limbed funk beat. It remains one of the greatest jazz-funk moments of all time, as this timely reissue proves. This time round, it comes accompanied by another "Head Hunters" classic - Hancock's groovy, synth-laden re-recording of his own 1962 composition "Watermelon Man". Two stone cold classics for the price of one: what's not to like?

Review: A new 7" all the way from Japan's Urban Discos label, from a live band with roots in soul, jazz and funkFirst up is their cover of 'Give Me Your Love,' a Curtis Mayfield jam. It's an instrumental in their hands and one that has some superb guitar solos and nice drum jams under organ vamps that are warm and subdued. 'Koi No Yokan (The Premonition Of Love)' is another vibrant mix of Hammond organs, swaying drums and splashing cymbals that is full of laid back melancholy.

Review: INDEX:Records founder and self-styled 'DJ and sound engineer' Conna Haraway finally makes his vinyl bow following a couple of low-key cassette and digital download releases. According to the Sydney-based imprint handling the release, Theory Therapy, the wonderfully titled Spatial Fix was partially inspired by the Glasgow-based artist's 2024 tour of Japan and South Korea. You can hear that in the subtly far eastern melodies and ambient techno style textures of ten-minute opener 'Freon', whose grooves would undoubtedly have impressed the late Andrew Weatherall, and the hushed, semi-abstract, deeply layered wonder of 'Switchback'. Elsewhere, the stretched-out, immersive and meditative '1702' joins the dots between low-tempo ambient techno and dub techno, while 'Patent' is deep, otherworldly and suitably sub-heavy mutant dancehall.

Review: Sean Johnston has put together some righteous compadres to form a new project - The Summerisle Six. Featuring Jo Bartlett (Yellow Moon Band) on vocals, Andy Bell (Oasis and Ride amongst others) & Duncan Gray on guitars, Kev Sharkey (That Petrol Emotion, The Undertones, Elvis Costello to name a few) on percussion, Mick Somerset Ward on Sax (Clock DVA, Was Not Was, Crooked Man). This Is Something is a driving pop groover reminiscent of a late 80's early 90's Indie Dance anthem. The Dub mix invites the OG mix to ALFOS, turns the lights off and presses the smoke button for a chuggy heartwarming trip across the dance floor. There are no words to describe Rico Connings mix other than to say this 10 min journey has to be heard to be believed. A genuine Balearic gem.

Review: Legendary bandleader Eddie Palmieri took a rare groove excursion from his Latin legacy in the early 70s for two albums as Harlem River Drive. Criminally overlooked, Soul Brother have dusted off two of the many highlights from his self-titled debut; "Idle Hands" is a sleazy, Gaye-style message with an almost spoken word quality to the vocals and a smoky wooziness to the horns while "Seeds Of Life" is a real end-of-set belter that rises and rises with tight orchestration between the guitar, horns and drums. Incredible... This can't be slept on this time round.

Review: Francis Harris blew plenty of minds with his third LP, "Trivial Occupations", when it dropped last year, and now the German deep house don is revisiting two of the tracks from the record for a pair of smartly chosen remixes. On the A side, the mighty Joe Claussell presents a Cosmic Arts version of "Minor Forms" which bursts with nu jazz stylings, from the bashy drums to the wiggy synth lines pinging into the stratosphere. Switching stance pretty drastically for the B side, deep diving Canadian artist LNS takes "St Catherine & The Calm" down a rabbit hole of head-nodding meditation over the course of 11 minutes smattered with electro touches, mystical flute and more ear-snagging delights besides.

Review: American jazz pianist Gene Harris first released 'Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong' and its counterpart 'Summer' in 1974, when both initially appeared on the classic soul jazz album Astral Signal. Thereafter, it enjoyed a second bout of popularity after being picked up by the trailblazing rare groove scene in London. Now for a third: Selector Series now proffer another reissue of this rare groove workout, a Latin funk gem for an age not yet properly recorded or recognised. Snappy, pugilist drums, wowwing synths and filling choral counterpoints make this a real funk treat.

Review: Detroit-born jazz musician Wendell Harrison did a lot of seminal work with the likes of Phil Ranelin and Tribe in the early part of his career, but he's also slipped out some seriously funky wares like this rare joint originally from 1982 on Wenha Records. Athens Of The North are champions of such records, picking them up, showing them some love and getting them out to a fresh audience, and so it goes on this killer 7", which flips the A and the B so Harrison's version of Stevie Wonder's 'Rocket Love' gets up front in all its groovesome glory.

Review: Originally part of a 1975 charity compilation LP raising money for environmental charities in California - which later became a collectors artifact changing hands for silly money (which didn't fit well with the Deja Vu Kid team) - so this Balearic nugget, the crown jewel of the album, was released on 7". More in keeping with its original spirit, not to mention its exquisite sound, there's no better way to share it again than on it's own 45 release at a fair price. 'Metropolis' and its B-side, 'Before I'm Gone', are pristine, hi-fi wilderness folk ditties, both of which evince an incredible mood of streamside Americana.

Review: Haze, an Exeter band that in 1981 endlessly toured the South West of England and released the album "SILVERTOPS REFLECTS HAZE" upon which many contemporary tracks were given the Haze treatment from Barry Manilow's 'I Can't Smile Without You' to Johnny Cash's 'Ghost Riders in the Sky'. In the mix Azymuth's Latin funk anthem 'Jazz Carnival' and Space's legendary electronic 'Magic Fly' surfaced, the latter two of which make up this exceptional 7" release by Panorama records, this relatively new label that celebrates idiosyncratic rarities. Haze seem to like breaking down the original and making space between the beats and yet on this A side an already pumping track pumps faster with an extra electronic edge on the Moog-ish organ, whilst paradoxically Haze's lead guitarist takes on Jose Roberto Bertrami's originally syncopated keys in a more regulated way - not a bad thing if not a jazz dancer but someone who just loves to dance! Intelligently, Panorama have coupled this with Haze's percussion heavy version of 'Magic Fly' on the B side, that even if it remains more so electronic, even poppy, it nicely compliments the Brazilian homage of side A. If you love a rare version, 7" 45s and early 80s jazz funk with a synthesised edge you'll love this.

Review: Basic Spirit is a new label out of Germany from the esteemed pair of Tornado Wallace and Jamie Tille. The label makes its bow with a mid-tempo cosmic workout from the pair under the HearT Sphere guise and makes big use of a siren sample from the cult TV show ER. It's layered carefully over post-rave downtempo bliss, with Balearic chords, dreamlike pads and big beats all feature across the three mixes. The Piano mix is the most fun and old school and the Children Mix is to get you in a trance, with added hints of Robert Miles. Bring on the summer.

Review: The cult Melodies International label run by Floating Points and Mafalda starts a new series here. Melodies Record Club will find each curated by a different guest DJ or producer with the first one selected by the always on point Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet. He picks some of the tracks he used to spin at the legendary Plastic People and first up is an extended version of 1975 tune 'De I Comahlee Ah' by jazz stars Jackie McLean and Michael Carvin. Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of Breath takes care of the flip with the big band energy and excellent horn work of 'MRA.'

Review: While best known for their funk and soul reissues, Dynamite Cuts do frequently dig deeper and look further afield for musical inspiration. They're at it again here, offering up a lavishly packaged "45" featuring two killer cuts from Brazilian saxophonist and flautist Hector Costita's jazz-funk/jazz-fusion album 1981 (which, you guessed it, was first released in 1981). A-side 'Avessos' is warming, gentle and groovy, with Costita's jaunty sax motifs rising above a samba-jazz beat, restless triangle percussion and some seriously toasty electric piano lines. 'Divagacao' is a more up-tempo nd rhythmically interesting affair that reminded us of Azymuth while also boasting some genuinely dazzling sax solos.

Review: Herbert's most recent album, the return-to-his-deep-house-roots treat that was Musca, has been given the remix treatment for Record Store Day 2023. It's a predictably impressive package, with Floating Points - delivering a 15-minute trip into glitchy micro-house territory in fine fashion - naturally taking top billing. His remix - kind of like a minimalist take on his own early house excursions, with added early morning weirdness - is far from the only treat on show though. Seven Davis Jr delivers a rubbery, loose-limbed and quietly funky tweak of 'Might As Well Be Magical', before Herbert steps up with his 'Greenery Dub' of 'Fantasy', a slow-burn, near 10-minute affair that recalls the oddball brilliance of his turn-of-the-millennium house releases.

Review: Claremont 56 founder Paul "Mudd" Murphy has a thing for studio supergroups. New project Hillside follows in the footsteps of Bison (who once counted Holger Czukay, Ursula Kloss and Sal Principato amongst their members) and Paqua. Their debut single is closer in tone to the latter than the former, with opener "Hidden Port" offering a deliciously languid, wide-eyed fusion of eyes-closed jazz-rock guitar solos, unfurling kosmiche keyboards, bobbing Latin rhythms and an electric violin solo from a musician renowned for his work with British folk legend Bert Jansch. You'll find more electric violin on the wilder and more up-tempo flipside "The Kings Tun", where distinctive fiddle solos rise above jangling acoustic guitars, warm bass and spacey keyboard flourishes. Review: Will Hofbauer and Igaxx collaboratively expand the all-too-easily received palettes of electro, techno, garage all in between, and even more yonder, proving to us that the boundary edges of each genre may be blurred without worry. Sharing three groove-bays each on this latest 12", Hofbauer indulges an across-the-pond sojourn, guesting on Japan's Ladybug label, which is managed by the also eminent Igaxx, who occupies the B with equal grip. Hofbauer's 'Cricket', 'Clod' and 'Cocodrilo' bring three endocrine C's to a singly sanguine side, echoing a Hessle Audio-esque experimental dance sensibility while secreting all manner of vital sonic fluids from his ears unto ours; the last track is especially alarming; cursedly toothy, its growly lead zombifying the elsewise rapid mix by way of an enthralled grunt. Igaxx's contributions are relatively supportive and yet mad, moving from the squelches and pipey ascensions of '4 5 SL Trip' to the parabreaks flows of 'Liquefy' and the sloshing cosmo-funk astro-vista that is 'Ray In Space'.

Review: Rick Holmes' Remember to Remember is a gem of a reissue from 1981, faithfully presented with both original tracks on each side. this 12" vinyl from gold mink records is gleaming with top soul-jazz and funk music with a crisp production that stands out. Sadly, Rick Holmes recently passed away which makes this reissue extra special. The title track 'Remember to Remember' and the B-side 'Tothe Unknowledgeable One' showcase infectious grooves and soulful rhythms that mark this record as a true classic. Hearing it for the first time on jfm/horizon radio in the early 80s was a revelationiintroducing many to rare groove soul. While the latter two are generally better-known for their deep and sometimes tech-tinged house and ambient productions, the original mix of 'Watarese' (featured here on side B) is a dense, immersive jazz soundscape laden with evocative Japanese vocals, improvised piano, moody orchestration and definite nods towards vintage free-jazz. Spiritual Life supremo Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell provides the remix and, somewhat predictably, steals the show. His take is gently rhythmic, sun-splashed spiritual jazz full of hand percussion, fluid piano motifs and rubbery double bass.

Even so, few of his full-lengths are quite as sought after as the LP that started it all, 1975's "Christening For Listening: A Soundtrack For Every Body". Here it gets the reissue treatment, admittedly with a relatively limited pressing. The album is rich and evocative, joining the dots between new age, ambient and experimental jazz, with the seven-part A-side "Spectrum Suite" offering a slowly shifting journey that should really be listened to in its entirety. Closer "Subtle Body Suite", a moody, up-tempo dancefloor jazz number full of squally trumpet solos, is also incredible.

Things fire up in a tough and trippy manner as Delta wrings all kinds of tricky noises out of his gear and keeps the bass brooding in the low end, but hold tight for a perfectly 90s chord progression in that pad line. Cabanelas has a bleepy mission on 'Sambu Y Los Morsas' which flits between creepy passages of tension and acid tweaking drops. Z@p keeps things melancholic while adhering to the record's over-arching old-skoool outboard vibe, and then Justin Drake and Quinn Whalley sign the record off with a slice of proto trance for the deepest of 90s-tinted dancefloor reveries.

As the title suggests, it's unarguably Halsall's most summery album to date, with the celebrated bandleader and trumpeter - accompanied by some of Manchester's most accomplished players - offering up a swathe of relaxed, life-affirming compositions that combine modal and contemporary jazz themes with gentle, Latin-influenced rhythms, breezy instrumentation (harps, kalimbas, marimbas and so on) and subtle nods towards Charles Stepney and Terry Callier. Review: Following 2014's When The World Was One, Halsall and the Gondwana collective continue their spiritual jazz adventure with another immaculate narrative. Now with much more vocal prowess, singer Josephine Oniyama plays a lead role in the story, adding consistency and personality to the Halsall's swooning, cinematic odysseys. Highlights include the Hathaway-style half spoken/half sung "Badder Weather", the frenetic double bass and brushed drum crescendos of "The Land Of", the (lark) ascending strings and oriental scales of "Cushendun" and the smoky, faraway Coltraneisms of the title track. Modern jazz doesn't get any more authentic than this.

Review: Johnny Hammond was a prolific organist, composer and multidisciplinary artist active throughout the USA for the majority of the 20th Century. By the time the lesser-known LP and meditation on devilish excess 'Gambler's Life' was released in 1974, Hammond's sound had grown unusually cacophonous and was noisy to a kind of perfection that could only be described as an acquired taste. That doesn't deter us, though: this reissue from Soul Brother carefully pays homage to the late great's 28th album, with the broken wonk of 'Rhodesian Thoroughfare', the voluptuous funk of 'Star Borne' and the melismatic virtuosity of 'Virgo Lady' all tempting us back towards the broad gate.

The Upturned Glass, the pair's sixth collaborative full-length, is another genuine gem. Review: Fat Albert Rotunda represents one of Herbie Hancock's earliest forays into jazz-funk and is centred around the music he composed for the Fat Albert cartoon show. Released between his landmark album Maiden Voyage in 1965 and the classic Head Hunters from 1973, it stands out in Hancock's catalogue - despite said catalogue being so packed with gems. The album features funky tracks like 'Fat Mama' and jazz-oriented tunes such as 'Tell Me A Bedtime Story', wih Hancock supported by a stellar sextet including Joe Henderson on tenor sax, Johnny Coles on trumpet and Buster Williams on bass. Although Hancock's work spans various developments in jazz, funk, and r&b, he always maintained a unique voice, and this is a great example of it at its most distinctive.

It came in 1996 on the Verve label and is the sound of the great American musicians offering up his own jazz renditions of classic and more contemporary rock and r&b tunes. The British music production company were the first to license such music exclusively for film and TV and thus single-handedly popularised the now DJ's favourite genre. Here on this reissue, Aussie producer, musician and double bassist Johnny Hawksworth (one of two famous library musician "hawks", only once removed from the perhaps more eminent Alan Hawkshaw), prizes open both falcon's eyes and auriculars: 'Bite Hard Breaks', the star, makes for an unfathomably cool piece for the playing of seductive games. Review: While former New Young Pony Club member (and sometime Hot Chip collaborator) has devoted much of her career to DJing, her occasional solo musical releases have always been strong. Her solo debut LP, 2021's Private Sunshine, was excellent, but if anything this belated sophomore effort is even better. The album's genius lies in its consistency and the first signs of a smart, stylish, trademark boogie and proto-house influenced synth-pop sound, with extra authenticity provided by clear sonic nods to classic 1980s cuts from NYC and beyond. She's always been a talent, but it feels like a genuine crossover moment could be upon us - helped, no doubt, by the quality of the sassy 'Frequency', slow-motion jam 'Stop The Rain' and future dancefloor anthem 'In My Heart'.

Review: Sam Records proudly presents a live recording of the Heath Brothers, performed in Paris at Studio 104, Maison de la Radio, on April 16, 1976. In addition to a superb version of 'One for Juan', the band perform two tracks from the Marchin' On! album: 'Watergate Blues' and a wonderful version of 'Smilin' Billy'. A suspenseful delight, 'One For Juan', seems to emerge from nowhere, a snowball of sound, dialectically picking up sax, piano counterpoints and lightfooted hi-hat clenches in a freeform mush. 'Smilin' Billy' is less expulsive and more measured, making for a beautiful soul-jazz number for scale-tickling flute and piano, backed up by brilliantly "bowing" double basses.

Review: Finnish fusion five-piece the Heikki Sarmanto Quintet recorded and released their sole album, Counterbalance, way back in 1971. Brought together by bandleader and Rhodes electric piano wizard Heikki Sarmanto, the band burned brightly briefly before vanishing into obscurity. Svart Records has - wisely, given its cult status - decided to reissue the album, this time on translucent green vinyl and accompanied by extensive liner notes. It remains a unique and hugely enjoyable album that joins the dots between warm and largely laidback contemporary jazz, jazz-funk, more pastoral folk-jazz fusion, and more high-octane, spiritual jazz-inspired improvisations. It also boasts some genuinely life-affirming flute and guitar solos amongst the rubbery double bass, loose-limbed rhythms and Sarmanto's inspired keys-work.

Review: Roberto Lange is back with a new album for 4AD which feels in stark contrast to his previous outing, 2021's Far In. That album was a definite lockdown record, and now Lange is in the mood to reach out and celebrate the sunshine, funnelling his dense and dusky production and playing into some wonderfully varied songs. There's a unique sentimentality to the Helado Negro sound captured in the huge reverb tails which spiral out of songs like 'LFO (Lupe Finds Oliveros)', but there's no immediate fix for the curious charm of his dusty indie rock sound.

Review: Craft Recordings offer up an in-demand reissue of Joe Henderson's Power To The People, an abiding classic in the domain of New York hard bop, and one of three standouts in Henderson's Milestone Records era, through which the completist listener may chart and increasing political awareness and stylistic horizon-expansion on the artist's behalf. Recorded during a turbulent phase in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, Power To The People raises a clenched fist in favour of democracy and equality, whilst at the same time incorporates many an unforeheard sound and instrument for Henderson, from electric piano to bass and enlisting the aid of fusion greats like Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter - all amounting to the jazz equivalent of a revolutionary event, after which nothing would ever be the same.

Review: Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen and Dutch pianist Harmen Fraanje strike a fine balance on their latest collaborative jazz record Touch Of Time. Warm and tender throughout, this is a back-alleyed melanchole, with its stark counterpoints between piano and trumpet somehow eliciting the audio-sensation of more instrumentation than there is - a gestalt of ghosts. Gradients of emotion wax and wane like the strange blue lights that are often visible when one's eyes are closed. Produced by Manfred Eicher at the Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano, this is fine recording indeed.

Review: Hankerers after 90s band musicians turned Y2K solo electronica artists will water at the mouth at the first play of this one. Her Space Holiday was the first-time solo alias of Marc Bianchi, the American indietronic musician known for his membership of the bands Indian Summer and Calm. Turning his hand to solo soundcraft at the turn of the millennium, and releasing under Skylab and Tiger Style - the latter of which saw to the release of the first edition of this record, albeit with a different sleeve design - Bianchi's solo output would echo the post-hardcore humours that characterised his group work, except for the fact that it would also somewhat electronify them into contrition, resulting in every logical conclusion from lasery broadcast neofolk ('Snakecharmer') to anxiolytic hyperballad emo ('Through The Eyes Of A Child').

It is the only album from this outfit and it was once reissued on CD in 2004 but never before on vinyl. Review: Since launching two years ago, Tony Higgins and Mike Peden's J-Jazz series has become an indispensable guide to Japan's modern jazz scene. The third volume continues in a similar vein to its predecessors, gathering together sought-after, overlooked and little-known cuts from across the jazz spectrum (think spiritual, modal, fusion, post-bop and Latin), all of which were recorded by Japanese artists in the 1960s, '70s and '80s. The standard of music is, somewhat predictably, breathtakingly high throughout, with highlights including the weighty post-modal bop of Koshuke Mine's 'Morning Tide', the sun-kissed Brazil-inspired brilliance of Hideo Shiraki's 'Groovy Samba', and a string of funk-fuelled, dancefloor-friendly workouts from Hiroshi Murakami & Dancing Sphynx, Shigeharu Muka and the Ryojiro Furusawa Quartet.

The compilation is both a serious history lesson and hugely enjoyable to listen to, featuring a mixture of U.S-influenced jazz-funk, fusion, post-modal and deep, spiritual improvisations. Naturally, all of the material has never been released outside of Japan before, with the vast majority of tracks being either ludicrously rare or sought-after. Simply essential, all told.

Review: Andrew Hill's debut album first came to the jazz giant Blue Note Records in 1963, but it wasn't until almost two decades later in 1980 when the titanic 'Dance With Death' laid down the pianist's existential side. A six-track meander through melodic post-bop, high-note ivory-tinkings, and an unmistakable focus on swing as its rhythmic base, this is almost certainly an unforgettable brush with the other side. Hill's piano is muted yet stark, providing a neatly blue counterpoint to the stereoized and doubled-up trumpet parts played by Charles Tolliver and Joe Farrell.

Review: American jazz pianist and composer Andrew Hill originally released his Point of Departure album in 1965 on the Blue Note label. He found him playing in a sextet alongside the talented likes of alto saxophonists Eric Dolphy and Joe Henderson plus trumpeter Kenny Dorham and drummer Tony Williams as well as bassist Richard Davis. The record was remastered for a CD release in 1999 by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder and even now it stands apart as a future jazz statement. Some of the tracks are heavy on melancholy to the point that Dorham would occasionally tear up when playing them live.

Review: Eric Hilton's reputation in the field of downtempo electronic music is second-to-none. Or few. Taking a logical step into the musical haze here, Out of the Blur is his first album of ambient music, and lands on Emerald Wave, a relatively new imprint focused on sounds suitable for healing sessions and other life affirming, non-narcotic pursuits. "What you leave out in ambient music is as important as what you include," the producer has apparently said of his latest. "I don't have a background making ambient music, this is definitely a different kind of record for me. Ambient music is inherently ambiguous, transporting you to a place that isn't really well defined. But I think it's the absence of answers, that formlessness, that makes this kind of music so emotionally impactful." Let's leave it at that.

Review: Thievery Corporation co-founder Eric Hilton is adept at many different produciton styles and he calls on most of them on this new Present Past & Future EP for Montserrat House. First up is a future jazz and jungle fusion with steamy sax motifs drifting up high over the slick drums. The tempo drops to nothing on the lush downtempo sounds of 'Put Em' Down' and 'Something For Byrd' (feat Brian Jackson) is a star-gazing after dark masterclass with wispy synths and soulful vocals. There is squelchy synth funk on 'E Plays It Cool', blissed out trip hop on 'Cold Gemini' and another 90s era acid jazz and breaks fusion to finish with 'Mind Archelogy' (feat Brian Falkowski).

Tarzanland captures the essence of late-'80s California with sun-soaked kanky? ongaku, minimalistic proto-chillwave and breezy synth melodies all washing over you in delightful fashion. Its lush soundscapes evoke the likes of Steve Winwood and Steely Dan as it is infused with nostalgia and serene electronic sounds. They make for a blissful journey through simple pleasures, where ocean waves and warm breezes empty your mind of all but the nicest of thoughts.

Review: Given the hype surrounding HNNY over the last few years - fuelled, primarily, by a string of celebrated singles on Puss, Local Talk, Let's Play House and YUMMY - it's somewhat surprising that Sunday marks his first foray into the album market. Wisely, the Swedish artist embraced the opportunity for eclecticism that the format provides, filling his debut full-length with a mix of tracks variously designed for sofa-bound listening and dancing in clubs. Review: Honour's debut album, Alaafia, is a journey through the depths of the African diaspora, connecting Lagos, London, and New York. This album blends the darker tones of blues, hip-hop, free jazz, ambient and gospel with elements of Christian mythology and Yoruba folklore. As cinematic as it is painterly, Alaafia is a meditation on life, death and love, drawing inspiration from casual conversations, field recordings, literature, and personal archives. The result is an impressionistic vision that blurs boundaries between everywhere and nowhere, history and the present, the individual and the universal. Dedicated to Honour's late grandmother, the title track Alaafia began after their last embrace, infused with her spirit. This tape-saturated composition transitions from Lagos to London's smoky cityscape, reflecting the artist's grief and PTSD. The dream-like quality is marked by stretched guitar drones and stuttering loops, with their grandmother's shared faith surfacing through the music. 'When Angels Speak of Love' borrows its title from Sun Ra and bell hooks, shaping praise music into disorienting spirals with syrupy DJ Screw-inspired breaks and melancholic guitar splinters. This track engages in a conceptual dialogue with the spirits of both late thinkers, incorporating them into Honour's pantheon of ancestral guides. 'Giz Aard ($uckets),' the album's ninth track, features regimented drums anchoring a sombre melody that swirls with heartache, hovering between death and eternal joy.

They join forces on the former's M Plant label for this superb collision of musical worlds. It is unified by Afro beats and a unique mix of futuristic ideals with Femi's improvised jazz sax leading the way over Hood's cosmic synth sounds. The album was recorded in just one 30 plus minute take which is all the more of a testament to each artists's abilities. Femi's exquisitely free-flowing playing and Hoods signature grooves are perfectly intertwined in this great coming together of two avant art forms.

Review: Accomplished American jazz pianist Horace Tapscott recorded a seminal album with his quintet in 1969 The Giant Is Awakened. A follow-up album was recorded but never released, locked away in the Flying Dutchman archives until today. This three-track avant-garde session features the same players from The Giant Is Awakened - Arthur Blythe on alto sax, Everett Brown Jr on drums and David Bryant and Walter Savage Jr on bass. It wasn't long after this Tapscott retreated from the mainstream music industry to record in a low key fashion and eventually establish the Pan-Afrikan People's Arkestra, but The Quintet captures a special moment in time never heard before a dream come true for Tapscott fans and jazz lovers of all stripes.

Review: Wah Wah welcome the return of multi-talented Norwegian producer Espen Horne, following a 24 year hiatus. Sometimes, such resurfacings must happen - even after such long periods of time - if only to reaffirm the round-robin integrity of the label. The Anatomy Of Serene Eloquence is thus the logical, LP-form follow-up to 1999's acid jazz single/EP 'Magnetica', which, though released only to furtive acclaim, launched the label's reputation as a pusher of delights. This new one, however, makes for a remarkably different turn in sound, coming as a full-length of ambient, tremolo-ing and glistening jazz-funk verging on hip-hop (though certainly cut from the same cloth as 'Magnetica'). Vocalists and instrumentalists such as Olav Wollo, Faye Houston and Aich are kept firmly in tow, squeezing the icing onto an already spongy, delicious sonic gateau.

Review: New Orleans brass band fixture The Hot 8 Brass Band unveil their latest record, in memory of Bennie Pete aka. "Big Tuba", the late co-founder and sousaphone player of the band. Having passed away on September 6, 2021, Pete was described as a "constant galvanising force", and this galvanic power is heard on full display here, as the top brass of the band are heard to collierly collude with many a New Orleands folk and hip-hop legend. Chief among the Hot 8's best characteristics are their incorporation of New Orleans bounce music (a local variation of hip-hop) into their brass-driven tracks and live shows; the sense of bustle, bombast and crowd commotion is heard here, reflecting the extent of the lives touched by Pete.

Review: The exalted dream-pop-and-more duo of Nigel Yang and Jonnine Standish (HTRK) were originally a trio, with bassist Sean Stewart making up a third part of the Australian team's membership. Marry Me Tonight (2009) was as such the only album HTRK recorded from start to finish as a trio, as well as, coincidentally, being the only HTRK record to bear the co-productive stamp of Rowland S Howard (The Birthday Party). With the band racked by the devastation of both Stewart and Howard's deaths in the years after this album's release, HTRK's second LP is the last in an era: unlike their romantic recencies, early 'Hate Rock' was marked by enveloping blankets of industrial grunge-verb, with the instrumental shadow of post-rock looming larger, and with comparatively reticent and sparsely included vocal performances by Standish. Ghostly now reissue the record in what now functions as a compelling look back on HTRK's relatively steelier start.

Review: Released in 1964, groundbreaking hard bop classic Breaking Point! marked a departure for trumpet legend Freddie Hubbard. Having established himself with The Jazz Messengers, this album showed him breaking out as a player with some daring and expressive playing that went full tilt into modal sequences and rapid fire notes that shook up the state of play and showed new possibilities for jazz as the 60s progressed. In its position between wild experimentation and tradition, it retains musical form which makes the edgier angles go down very smoothly indeed. You can see why this would be a candidate for Decca's Tone Poet series - Hubbard's expression has rarely been matched, in composition or execution.

Review: It's been some six years since Hun Choi made his debut on William Burnett's WT Records imprint. In that time, he's proved incredibly hard to pin down. This debut album for Rush Hour seems designed to continue that trend, offering a series of warm, melodious and curiously Balearic cuts that defy easy categorization. Sure, there are dancefloor-focused moments - see the cacophonous, Detroit-influenced hustle of "Error of the Average", the deep acid madness of "Silent Sensations" and the classic deep house bounce of "Desire" - but also a range of downtempo and ambient jams that arguably impress more. Of these, it's "The World" - a humid exercise in tropical drums, twittering flutes and looped vocal samples - and the sublime, string-laden "Bruises" that really stand out.

Review: The most celebrated jazz vibraphonist of them all is Bobby Hutcherson. Oblique was one of many high water marks of the Blue Note man, and it featured Herbie Hancock, Albert Stinson and Joe Chambers on the original session recorded in 1967. The album was only the second time Bobby played as part of a quartet and it received rave reviews at the time for its sophisticated but accessible sound. Hutcherson's phrasing on 'All Of You' is adventurous and his delicate touch on 'Spring Is Here' highlights his lyrical sensitivity. The brisk tempo of 'Star Eyes' adds energy, while 'If I Were A Bell' features an engaging solo introduction from Hutcherson. Cables shines on 'Summertime' and the album closes with an exhilarating take on 'Autumn Leaves'. Hutcherson's vibes function much like a lead horn, evoking the spirit of classic jazz quartets. Cables' piano work is exceptional and an intricate yet fluid accompaniment. Jones, whose drumming, delivers an impeccable performanceihis crisp, swinging touch is a masterclass. Overall, a very underrated a jazz album being reissued to a new generation is always a reason to celebrate.

Review: Here's another classic from one of the greatest vibraphone players to ever grace the world of jazz. Amongst Bobby Hutcherson's imperious discography lies this collaboration with tenor sax, flute and oboe virtuoso Harold Land, originally released on Blue Note in 1971. San Francisco is notable for the shift Hutcherson and Land took away from the common hard bop style they were best known for, heading towards the fruitful pastures of jazz fusion. As well as the lead men, special credit goes to the rhythm section of John Williams on bass and Mickey Roker on drums, holding down some sturdy grooves for the duration.

Review: Bobby Hutcherson was one of the greatest vibraphone and marimba players in jazz, and he left behind a staggering legacy. By 1965 he was already recording his first album as bandleader for Blue Note, and just three years later he recorded Stick-Up!, his fifth for the label and one of his all time finest. Decca clearly agree as they now present the album again in their Tone Poet series. Backing Hutcherson up is Joe Henderson on tenor sax, McCoy Turner on piano, Billy Higgins on drums and Herbie Lewis on bass, and in that ensemble you get a golden example of post bop perfection.
