Egyptian Reggae
2025 bestseller!
Egyptian Reggae (clear splattered vinyl 7")
Cat: 62118. Rel: 29 Jan 25
Pancho Acosta - "Egyptian Reggae" (3:58)
Money Chicha - "Carnaval De Jujuy" (3:07)
Review: A new take on a Jonathan Richman classic from 1977 which has lit up clubs for 45-odd years, especially during the punk era. The track's infectious rhythm has inspired various reggae remixes but now it's getting a fresh cumbia twist. Cumbia and reggae share a common groove, making them a perfect match for DJs to mix and this one was recorded in Lima by Pancho Acosta, founder and guitarist of Company Quinto, who transforms the track into an upbeat cumbia gem. The flip side features Acosta's 'Carnaval de Jujuy' blended with Money Chicha's modern take on Peru's fuzzed-out chicha sound.

Akiko & Masayasu Tzboquchi - "Love Theme From Sparticus" (feat Mbanja Ritchy aka B-Bandj - Clear Day mix) (4:34)
Review: Tom Browne's 1980 single 'Funkin' For Jamaica' has long been something of an anthem - a hybrid funk/boogie classic that remains a staple in sets of hip-hop, disco and soul DJs alike. Given its ubiquity, covering the song is fraught with danger, but remarkably Japanese producer Akiko and guest vocalist Mbanja Richy have successfully put a new spin on it. Their take is subtly tougher and more synth-heavy, with bilingual French/English vocals, nods to Zouk music and a bassline so squelchy it could have been lifted from a P-funk record. Over on the flip, the pair go mellow, deep and laidback on a pleasingly skewed hip-hop soul cover of Terry Callier's legendary vocal interpretation of Alex North's 'Love Theme' from 'Spartacus'. Inspired stuff all told.

Alemayehu Eshete - "Tchero Adari Negn" (4:27)
Mahmoud Ahmed - "Bemin Sebeb Litlash" (4:26)
Review: The UK's Mr Bongo has been reissuing old music and putting out new tunes since the late 1980's, and the label is still going strong in 2015. This latest 7" features two of Ethiopia's greatest musicians, Alemayehu Eshete and Mahmoud Ahmed, in a head to head, split EP. On the A-side, Mr Bongo has resurfaced Eshete's "Tchero Adari Negn", a supremely funky piece with the man's own voice gliding effortlessly over hard drums and fuzy guitar riffs; "Bemim Sebeb Litlash" goes deeper and more psychedelic on the flip, and Ahmed's voice is a pleasure as always. Check their other material on Mississippi for a broader introspective.

Alloteva (4:38)
Deflector (4:56)

Time Is Plastic (4:41)
Review: Leng Records welcomes cosmic disco legend Daniel Baldelli back to the label a year after his much loved full length with Marco Fratty. This time out he serves up Alloteva, a first joint release with Marco Diongi for the label. Baldelli always manages to show a different look with each and every release and this one is no different - it offers big, cowbell laced cosmic disco with plenty of loose limbed drums and throbbing synths. 'Alloteva' opens up with a patter of toms and congas and squelchy bass, then 'Deflector' sinks deep and low, with seductive pads and balmy sunset sax lines. There are playful funk riffs underpinning 'Sonora' and leggy kicks and snappy hits making 'Time Is Plastic' a real chugger.

Banda Black Rio - "Miss Cheryl" (3:47)
Miele - "Melo Do Tagarela (Rapper's Delight)" (instrumental) (4:10)
Review: Although Brazil's Banda Black Rio remain infamous for the albums that they recorded in the late 1970s, two beautiful LPs that rode that singular wave of samba-ridden jazz dance, 1980's "Miss Cheryl" is an outstanding tune, and we can hear why RCA picked it up back in the day. Mr Bongo provides us with the reissue here and, if you haven't heard it, it's an absolute delight which switches between disco, psych, and something inherently Brazilian - there's even a wacky synth in there, for good measure. Compatriot Miele appears on the flip with "Melo Do Tagarela (Rappers Delight)", a sublime slice of early, electronic boogie that sounds as fresh today as it did back at the tail end of the 70s. A devious little reissue that you should own...

C Da Afro - "Nothing But The Funk" (6:33)
Juan Soto - "All Is Full Of Love" (5:10)
Review: Super Spicy's Super Spicy Recipe series is back with a sixth mouthwatering offering and once again it's a super hot outing of party-ready house and disco sounds. First up is the irresistibly colourful disco charm of Birdee with the freewheeling 'Underground' and its groove-infused piano. Label boss Monsieur Van Pratt then adds his own spin to a rare groove classic with a lung-busting soul vocal and Pato Watson is in edit mode as he tweaks 'Ella Fue' to perfection. Italian don Paul Older brings some funky jazz fusion sounds to his steamy 'Turkish Lights, C. Da Afro keeps it a party with his 'Nothing But The Funk' and Mexican Juan Soto slips into a more deep and loved-up funk-house vibe on 'All Is Full Of Love'.

Breakplus - "Le Train Enflamme" (7:56)
Mr Beatnick - "Achilles Heel" (5:30)
Review: Mr Beatnick's Mythstery label returns with 002 after an excellent first outing from Breakplus, whose 12" was vey much to our desire when it dropped late last year. The two actually go head-to-head on this 12" and, much like the twisted disco of artists like Black Devil Disco Club, this is some straight-up sexy gear, disjointed and unadulterated for maximum pleasure. Breakplus' weirdo boogie on "Le Train Inflamme" is our kinda joint, the sort of fuming, acid-laced glitz that'll appeal to the disco-heads and house-nerds alike; Mr Beatnick's "Achilles Heel" is just as eerie and roughed-up, but the vibe on here is darker, moodier, and drenched in a deep electronic edge. Very highly recommended.

Can You Win
Cat: TOWN 153. Rel: 04 Jul 14
Charlene & The Soul Serenaders - "Can You Win"
Margie Joseph - "One More Chance"
Review: Kent Soul pay homage to two diva-level chanteuses who deserve a little more space in the soul footnotes than they currently have. Originally released on Paradox, Charlene Southern's "Can You Win" was part of a collection that was marketed to Stax. You can instantly here why; a thumping upbeat groove, slim-line instrumentation (just straight-up guitar and bass) and real belly-driven vocals, it's raw and emphatic and honest in its dynamic. Perhaps best known for her covers, Margie Joseph was a lot more prolific than Charlene and this full-bodied, big band jam was one of her earliest releases. Complementing the stripped back A-side with broad horns and lavish pianos, Margie fronts with real confidence and timeless soul-stirring vocal prowess. Two sides of the soul coin, there's something for everyone here.

COOL Band - "Jam 1" (3:34)
Manzanem - "Don't Interupt" (3:59)
Review: While a lot of PPU's time is spent unearthing, reviving and liberating classic boogie, disco, funk and soul from the 80s and 90s, it's also home to troves of authentic grooves tailored in contemporary times... And long-standing label fam Benedek is one of the most consistent forces behind it all. The excellently titled C.O.O.L Band and Manzanem are two of his latest guises; the former is a real Sunday afternoon lazy vibe, like an electro boogie record on at half speed with thundering weight on the powerful kicks while the latter takes us deeper into the late 80s with a Mr Fingers' style trip into primordial house music. Pure synth odysseys, the pair of them.

Lifestyle (Donut mix) (3:26)
Lifestyle (Serious mix) (3:31)
Review: Following their first boom-bap flavoured collaboration with Crimson Alchemist, last year's 'Storytelling', Diess Productions regulars Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer once again join forces with the underground MC for a similarly retro-futurist hip-hop throwdown. Crimson Alchemist's Q-Tip-esque rap sounds superb on both versions, both of which boast fat, toe-tapping beats and tons of nods towards Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer's turntablist roots. The A-side 'Donut Mix' is the slightly bouncier of the two takes, with tidy organ motifs and sweeping synth-strings, while the flipside 'Serious Mix' revolves around some killer horn samples and a descending bassline.

Review: Promoting his limited vinyl series from the 7" league to the 12" premiership, Diesler's Buried Treasure brand provides its biggest beat bounty to date. Charged with a thriving sense of turbo funk and broken beat mischief, each cut screams carnival and peak time perkiness. The tight horn harmonies and percussive textures of "Smokin Jo Crow"; the slower, seductive boogie-based jam "In The Loop"; the tight, jazzed out Bugz-style stomps of "Rokko Loko"; the acid wiggles and tropical riddim of "Lullaby"... Every aspect of this extensive release sparkles with sonic soul.

Review: The Samosa label returns with Part 2 of the Re-Funk Head project, once again showcasing top-tier disco grooves. Opening up is Dirty Elements & Drunk Drivers feat. E.M.E with 'Disco Ball,' a sassy, high-energy track featuring a standout brass ensemble, while track 2, 'Ain't No Doubt About It' by Moplen, entices with disco beats, bongo rhythms, and a masterful bassline. Jazzyfunk's 'Sexy Thing' continues the disco theme with soaring strings and a punchy bassline, perfect for any dance floor moment. Closing the EP is DeGama's 'Feel The Groove,' a powerful tune blending house vibes with blues-inspired guitar and sultry saxophone. Re-Funk Head Part 2 is essential for serious funk fans.

Fantastic man - "Paradise"
Andy Hart - "My Queen"
Max Graef - "Das Brett"
Review: Australian label Melbourne Deep Cast return! Originally released as part of this year's Record Store Day activities, this Snooze For Days 10" from Melbourne's finest deep house operators is now widely available and features cuts from the Man Fantastique, Andy Hart and Max Graef. Each has supplied some excellent beat down edits of material that some might recognize and others won't; Fantastic Man's slow burning "Paradise" for example is based around a devilishly pitched down vocal of a late 90s neo soul classic that only really comes apparent when the "yeah you might laugh" refrain comes looping into focus. Andy Hart is on straight up discofunk sleaze form with "My Queen" whilst Max Graef cranks up the dust on "Das Brett" which has the best double bass manipulation since Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag".

A2 is on charge of the amazing italian producer Musta, who delivers an astonishing jazzy track to heat the dance floor. It is 'Nuit De Fievre' and it comes from label owner Gratts, aka the "Belgian down under," who revisits disco's golden era by assembling a stellar studio team starring the Moody Mae band in the company of Reinhard Vanbergen on violin and Jaj from Paris on vocals. What they cook up in return is elegant boogie and disco that will chime well with fans of Dimitri From Paris. Review: German disco might be most closely associated with Boney M but in fact it offers so much more. The scene was initially influenced by the influx of American soldiers camped in the county during the 70s. They listened to far away radio sounds from the US which were always steeped in disco and the locals caught on. Black Pearl Records now showcase how the scene has evolved over the years: and t is vibrant and inventive with its own distinctive characteristics if this i anything to go by. The Get Down
The Strut
Heatwave
Review: The second of this week's Million Dollar Disco EPs repeats the formula of previous waxual excursions from head honcho Al Kent: take impossibly hard to identify disco rarities and subject to a liberal dose of Walter Gibbons-style editing techniques. A simple yet very effective equation, you have to agree. Sliding across the A Side we have the fuzzy guitar-led brilliance of "The Get Down", a track punctuated by a relentless procession of shuffling snares. Pure instrumental disco heat! "The Strut" does just that on the B Side, some excellent melodies dribbling down the intricate syncopation and tight bass licks that propel the track beneath a swathe of vintage strings. "Heatwave" finishes the 12" in style with some heavy organ and synth funk outs chopped and looped to perfection over the chuggy beat.

Review: Earlier in the year, Kutiman took his brand of psychedelic fusion to Wah Wah 45s for the very first time. Here he returns home to Siyal Music with Turkish vocalist Melike Sahin in tow. "Sakla Beni" is wonderfully odd and exotic - a spaced-out psych-funk affair that wraps mazy, Moog style motifs, mind-altering orchestration and Sahin's wide-eyed vocal around a skewed, low-slung groove. It's brilliantly hallucinatory, as is the accompanying "Karaoke Version" - a superb instrumental take that allows listeners a chance to revel in the intricacy of Kutiman's arrangements. In this context, "Sakla Beni" sounds like it should be gracing the soundtrack of a particularly odd late 1960s Turkish film

Stayin' Alive (4:13)
Review: You've probably never thought that you need Cumbia cover versions of classic disco numbers in your life, but as this excellent seven-inch single from Vampi Soul proves, you really do. La Cumba Moderna De Soledad handles side A, delivering an inspired re-imagining of Rod Stewart number 'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy' which brilliantly wraps a Spanish translation of the track's familiar lyrics and snake charmer melodies around a typically chunky, club-ready cumbia groove. Arguably even better is Machuca Cumbia's flipside interpretation of Bee-Gees classic 'Staying Alive'. While it's instantly recognisable thanks to the guitar riffs and replayed melodies, their cumbia version is thrillingly psychedelic and undeniably tropical.

It is a diverse selection from sure to be star names such as Liluzu who opens with the slow and snaking house of 'Nano.' The series has now reached volume three, with the Paris-based pair delivering two more essential, light-touch re-rubs. Our pick of the pair is flipside 'Nova Onda', a DJ-friendly tweak of a Clavinet and quelchy synth-sporting chunk of P-funk influenced Brazilian boogie rich in excitable raps, high-register male backing vocals and grooves so addictive they should come with a health warning. A-side 'Bela Menina', meanwhile, is a similarly tidy revision of what sounds like a boogie-era MPB number - think improvised male vocals, jazz guitar licks, huggable grooves and dreamy synth sounds.

We say this because there aren't many good ones around, so it's refreshing to hear stuff so dope and fresh out and up on our vinyl charts. Maceo & The Macks - "Parrty"
Gang Starr - "Who's Gonna Take The Weight"
Review: Now firmly into the double figures, the Originals series seems like it could quite easily surpass the centenary mark without the concept ever feeling exhausted such is the vast well of source material and those that sampled it. Here the classic slab of funk that is "Parrty" by Maceo & The Macks takes centre stage on the A Side, reminding everyone that needs to be reminded just how tight Maceo, Fred and James were. For the flip, Originals turn to a master of flipping a track in DJ Premier and the Gangstarr standard "Who's Going To Take The Weight?". Listen to the A then the B and you'll realise how much of a producer Premier is. Seriously.

Mad Skillz - "The Nod Factor" (3:52)
Johnny Guitar Watson - "Superman Lover" (3:43)
Review: 5 Borough Breaks continues to focus on red hot hip hop classics that have come from the famous New York boroughs over the years. This latest mad limited 7" is another tidy one that goes all the way back to 1996 for 'The Nod Factor' from Skillz's From Where??? album. It's smooth and seductive, self congratulatory and sure to get floors bumping. On the reverse is a more soul drenched slow jam that gets you in the mood thanks to the buttery vocals of American blue sand funk musician "Johnny Guitar" Watson. This is a must cop.

Mkondo Wa Moto (4:43)
Review: London's Original Gravity label is a trusted source for soul, funk and reggae 45s, and they're back with this seriously hot one from Mafumu. The project is a collaboration between Neil Anderson and Max Jere of The Umoza Music Project, based in Senga Bay on Lake Malawi. On the A side track you can hear Jere singing in Malawi's main language of Chichewa, urging listeners to "vina!" which means 'dance'. It's unmistakably Afro funk, with blasts of horns and a rolling, hypnotic groove that suck you in immediately. On the flip Anderson takes over for the instrumental 'Mkondo Wa Moto', which leans in on the talking drum and lays some funk and and Latin touches into the mix.

Magalhaes - "Xango" (3:21)
Os Panteras - "Lambada Pauleira" (2:42)
Review: The previous instalment in Mr Bongo's ongoing Brazil 45s series offered up two sought-after cuts from Di Melo's 1975 self-titled debut album. This volume takes a slightly different approach, instead delivering killer cuts from two different artists, both of whom hail from the North of Brazil. On side A you'll find Magalhaes' 1986 gem 'Xangos', a cheery and energetic Lambada workout rich in jangling guitars, shuffling percussion, ear-catching vocals and restless bass. On the reverse Os Panteros takes over with 1987 jam 'Lambada Pauleira', a quirky chunk of Lambada full of fuzzy synths, infectious percussion and lo-fi guitar licks. The cut was famously re-edited some time back by Joutro Mondo, though this original version is - in our opinion - far superior.

Perp Walk (3:33)
Review: Magic In Threes returns with two spacey tracks that are guaranteed to get floors moving. The wonderful opener 'Aperitivo' blends Italo-disco vibes with atmospheric library music and in doing so manages to strike a perfect balance between compelling groove and lovely chill vibes. On the flip of this limited 7" is 'Perp Walk' which makes for a joyful ride with its dizzying rhythm sure to launch your soul into cosmic bliss. Both tracks are cosmic funk explorations with infectious rhythms and a sense of playful experimentation that translate the band's signature blend of retro sounds and modern sensibilities into something fresh.

Finnish Funk (2:55)
Shot Through The Grease (2:50)
Review: MiT return to King Underground to follow last year's sizzler "At Jody's". Two sides, two vibes, all instrumental: "Finnish Funk" is a classic sleazy street piece. A 70s scene setter with a New York state of mind and a dynamic arrangement that gradually unpeels and reveals, it's another smoker from the long-standing troupe. "Shot Through The Grease" has much more of a sultry, introspective feel. A smouldering slow and low cut with all the right twinkles, it's a sure fire baby maker. Threesy does it...

I Like That (remastered)

I Like That (3:49)
Time (3:57)
Review: Edition Hawara's second 7" release features one of the more obscure Austrian bands from the 1980s. Little is known about Magic Sound, though the cover suggests that their label wanted them to be Austria's answer to the Village People, though their sound is far more funk-leaning. One thing we know for sure is that the group included keyboard player Andy Tofferl, who was also a member of the famous pop ensemble EAV, as well as songwriter and producer Jiri Havran. We know that they went to the studio to record a whole album after touring Sweden in 1980, but only these two songs survived, and they are worth listening to over and over again. The vocals and keys are the stars of the show here and it seems the label was trying to engineer somewhat of a sequel to ABBA. You can't help but wonder what could've been for Magic Sound.

Review: Bjorn Wagner's all-star tropical disco band, Magic Source, loves a cover version. The outfit's first EP boasted, as a bonus cut, a superb (and colourful) take on Tom Tom Club's 'Genius of Love'. On this belated sequel, they've gone one better by re-inventing A Guy Called Gerald's pioneering UK house classic 'Voodoo Ray' as a driving, all-live tropical disco jam. It's cleverly done, with all the key elements being replicated, sometimes in canny ways (the acid lines now become Clavinet lines, the synth-bass is now bass guitar, and so on). It's a fantastic cover all told and one that is far more than a smile-inducing novelty. Also superb is flip-side 'Interplanetary Bounce', a spacey jazz-funk/disco fusion cut rich in fuzzy horns, vintage synth sounds and shuffling drums.
