Hot Mess (4:09)
Girl Fun (3:39)
Review: Adesha and Vincent Kwok come together once more for a new transmission that takes its stylistic cues from "the glittering dance floors of the disco era to Minneapolis-inspired funk." These are lush tunes with gorgeous backing vocals, fine sax sounds and irresistible drums. First is 'Hot Mess' which is a classic disco workout with pumping drums and nice loos percussion under the soaring vocals and cosmic synth rays. 'Girl Fan' has a sizzling sax solo and describes the stages of fandom over punchy beats. This is the third collab from this pair on The Sleepers Record label.

San Salvador (6:52)
San Salvador (instrumental) (5:15)
San Salvador (vocal club mix) (6:35)
San Salvador (Natural Born Grooves remix) (6:07)
Review: 'San Salvador' is by far and away the most celebrated track by Celso Valli's studio-only disco band, Azoto. A driving, heavily orchestrated chunk of grandiose disco heaviness with a touch of Latin swing, percussion aplenty, swirling strings and righteous horns, it's been an 'instant party starter' since it first appeared at the turn of the 80s. This reissue boasts both of Valli's original mixes - the hands-aloft, vocal-sporting original mix and the piano stab-powered instrumental take - as well as two contemporary tweaks. There's the 'Vocal Club Mix', a filter-sporting disco-house take that replaces some of the vocal with a new female lead, and the French Touch-esque remix by Belgians Natural Born Grooves aka Bert Boon & Jaco van Rijswijk. House DJs will appreciate these revisions, though it's Valli's original mixes that still hit home hardest.

Barrabas - "Wild Safari" (Marco Fratty remix) (4:55)
Review: Use Vinyl reissues cuts that were once dancefloor staples within the Italian disco scene. On this double header, they serve up two stone cold classics, both of which come accompanied by beefed up contemporary reworks. On side A there's a chance to savour Hamilton Bohannon's 1981 re-make of his celebrated club cut, 'Let's Start The Dance Part II'. This version was notably tougher and even funkier than its predecessor, with tons of dub mix style drops into Bohannon's infectious disco-funk guitar licks and the impassioned female backing vocals. Italian house legends Marco Fratty and Corrado Presti (both formerly of PFI Project) provide a tasteful but excitable rework, before side B opens with Barabas's prototype Afro-cosmic gem 'Wild Safari'. Fratty goes solo to remix that, updating the track without losing its distinctive, percussion-rich ethos.

Review: Cloud was a Brit-funk group back in the 80s whose catalogue is continuing to get plenty of attention. Their All Night Long EP was a big reissue with a remix from Ge-Ology and now we get Backatcha serving up this EP of four dazzling cuts. The well-crafted and floor-facing tunes here mix up disco, nu-disco, synth-pop and jazz funk with plenty of unique style. It's another doozy for the collection that saves you from forking out high prices for any originals you may be able to find.

Review: Rose Cornelius recorded these tunes in the late 70s, but never released them. They were thought by all those involved to be lost, but fortunately that wasn't the case. Rose was part of a band that saw big success and dropped albums in 1972 and 1973 but before then she was part of the Gospel Jazz Singers in the late 60's. It was her mother who asked her to come back and be part of the band, which whom she stayed until 1976. However, these tunes were recorded during that solo period in Miami and then unearthed by collector Dave Thorley who saw and bought online an old acetate disc credited to Rose Cornelius. This is glorious disco house music packed with soul.

Review: The Crates Motel crew make a head turning debut here with this inaugural release featuring some red hot classic all reworked with great care and plenty of dancefloor aplomb. Up first is 'Eye No You', a belting vocal cut with big disco energy that will have the floor in raptures. Things get slower and funkier on 'Beyond Far' with its loose and live drums and withering chords under a familiar riff. On the B-side the temp gets turned up again with 'More Eye', a Philly disco cut complete with lavish strings and raw male vocals full of heart wrenching soul. Last of all is 'Rock The Dance', a disco version of an epic Clash cut that is pure fun.

Review: Hit makes of the 20th and 21st Century don't come much bigger or more accomplished than French electronic innovators Daft Punk and irresistible hook-writing machine Pharrell Williams. When they got together to make music it was always going to give rise to monster hits and so it proved. Whoever you are, 'Get Lucky' cannot fail to get you singing along and swinging those hips. The Chic-style bass riffs, the smooth and catchy vocal from Williams and the effortless groove are all timeless. That one is backed with 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger' another Daft Punk classic from their earlier period but that is no less potent today.

On this record for Defected, Detroit's foremost trio of Athena Johnson, Lisa Cunningham and Teresa Marbury linked up with the mighty Amp Fiddler and Andres for a rip through house music as real as it gets. Do You Want The Real Thing (Opolopo remix) (10:57)
Let Them Dance (Dr Packer remix) (7:23)
Indiscreet (The Knutsens remix) (7:21)
Review: Although best known for the soaring anthem 'Cathedrals' - a 1976 gem that has been reissued many times - there's much more disco gold in the D.C Larue catalogue to find and play. It's ripe for remixing, too, as this fine EP proves. Opolopo steps up first to deliver a suitably grandiose, Tom Moulton style rearrangement of 1978 cut 'Do You Want The Real Thing' that smartly alternates between Clavinet-sporting groove sections and more overblown, hands-in-the-air instrumental sections. Over on the flip, Dr Packer gets his disco-funk on (minus the house beats he often employs) on a celebratory revision of 'Let Them Dance', before the Knutsens reach for star-fall electronics, throbbing arpeggio-driven bass and righteous orchestration on a delightfully full-throttle revision of 'Indiscreet'.

'Dancemuzak' transforms a classic NYC disco groove into a hypnotic, driving force while 'Itsdiscotime' masterfully loops rare, mind-blowing source material into a jam for the ages. These two pearlers both rework classic samples into new and seductive funky beat frameworks. Review: Amy Douglas is the latest addition to the Razor-N-Tape talent ranks and serves up a mighty fine rough 'n' tumble New York disco double A-side 7" to open her account. The opener is 'Freak At Night' with stiff synth stabs and strident drums that get the party pumping while the belting vocal brings the soulful hook. Absolute dynamite. Things are a little more loose on the flip with 'Bit-O-Honey' having more jangling drums and guitar riffs underpinned by a funky bass riff. The vocal is more florid and expressive making this a different but equally impactful sound.

Can You Deal (4:41)
Review: Athens Of The North can usually be found honing their expert craft of unearthing nigh impossible to find disco, and reissuing it in the utmost quality. However, the work of East Coast Love Affair (Euan Fryer and Nick Moore) is deceiving, as it adopts the image of one of said reissues while actually being fully contemporary music. 'Get Down' tops up a slew of master-quality releases for the label, expropriating a vocal line from obscure Minneapolis 'lo-fi' band Quiet Storm and putting it back into an entirely new, drunk-and-high instrumental context (think lasers, whistles, funk basses, an overall hazy sound). 'Can You Deal', on the flip, lends Quiet Storm a similar treatment, albeit for a cleverly hi-lo-fi disco house treatment.

Review: Mushroom Pillow is on a proud and so far successful mission to bring back Latin American music from the 60s-80s via its Relatin project. it's all about mixing up the traditional and the modern and putting fresh spins on what went before. Many of the originals they look to have gone unnoticed the first time round and that's the case here as Franc Moody adds his own twist to Elia & Elizabeth's 'Alegria.' His remix is a sympathetic one that gets the hips swinging over fat and funky disco bass and beneath the sunny Latin vocals. He strips them away on the instrumental version on the flip.

Review: Hands up - this is one of our favourite ever jams and frankly we can't really understand anyone who doesn't rate it pretty highly. It is a classic of the early dance scene that got hammered everywhere from Warehouse to Paradise Garage and remains in a class of one decades on. Next to the brilliant original, which is from a time when proper songwriting and musicianship defined house and disco, you get a Ron Hardy edit that is more uptempo, with hissing hi hats cutting through the funky rhythms and loopy drums. Sublime.

Love & Happiness (6:56)
Love & Happiness (Ron Hardy edit) (7:24)
Review: The American female vocal trio First Choice released their rendition of 'Love and Happiness' in 1973. The track is a cover of Al Green's original released just a year earlier in 1972, but First Choice's version was perhaps helped along the way by a peak case of nominative determinism: for us, theirs is the first choice. Featured on their debut album, Armed and Extremely Dangerous, it stood out on the Philly soul girl gang's record as one of the records most propitious to sampling by house and techno musicians, such as Todd Terry and Jungle Brothers. But this time, the legacy of this preceptive soulful-house interplay is honoured by a newly reissued remix by the mysterious but titanic Chicago producer Ron Hardy, whose inclusion on the record is the real star here. Hardy's signature reel-to-reel fuzzes and presence-bled hues effect recollections of a pre-DAW production setup, and the resonances of dub (woodblocks, four-tone hooks, burly basslines) nest the original Al Green vocal nicely.

'DM Slide' is a classic-sounding cut with busy basslines and silky arps, nice tinny percussion and a glorious vocal that soars way up top. That takes up the a-side while the flip is a dub version that ups the disco energy and removes the vocals so that the cosmic fx are more front and centre. A useful 12" so far.

It once again finds him adding his own special studio magic to come stone-cold classics from the funk and disco world. First, he flips Le Cop's 'Move Your Body' into a funky percussive sound with steamy vocals. Review: Do you feel like dancing? A masterclass in floor-filling (the inevitable result of including exactly what you want your audience to do in the lyrics) Henderson & Whitfield's 'Dancin' To The Beat' is an early example of psychologically affective music from New York - ironically hailing from an era in which city-dwellers didn't need much encouragement to dance in the first place. But hey. On 45rpm vinyl for the first time, both the repetitious vocal and remix-worthy instrumental versions are on there, giving this prime cut yet another fighting chance to make itself known.

This time round, he's chosen to do a bit of (we think) multi-track "versioning", offering a trio of reworks of the same killer cut: Chaka Khan's 1980 disco hit 'Clouds'. The 'Extended Clouds' version is fairly faithful to the original, just longer and even more epic. Arguably more revolutionary and revelatory is the 'New Clouds' take, which opts for a denser, more freewheeling disco-funk sound with crunchy guitar licks aplenty and heavier bass. On the 'Acoustic Clouds' take he removes the groove entirely, instead showcasing Chaka's vocal and the original instrumentation. It's a real treat!

Louie Vega clearly agrees, because late last year he decided to gather together the remaining members of Unlimited Touch and record a fresh 2020 version. The A-side "Touch Mix" is the bomb. It features a more organic-sounding disco-boogie groove than the 1980 original, with delicious guitars, bass and electric piano/organ underpinning seriously good group vocals from the sometime Prelude-signed outfit. Review: 'Love To The World', a sumptuously opulent and heavily orchestrated disco-soul number, transformed the fortunes of L.T.D - and their freshly appointed lead vocalist, Jeffrey Osborne - on its initial release in 1976. Here the full-length version of the track gets the reissue treatment for the first time in a while, with the band's gorgeous original mix (produced by none other than Larry and Fonce Mizzell) being backed by a fresh rub by house master turned disco king Dave Lee. The Z Records founder makes the most of the band's original vocals and instrumentation (admittedly with the addition of splashes of reverb and delay) on a seemingly re-constructed 'Mizzell Magic Mix' that brilliantly stretches out the cut by stripping back the orchestration and other musical elements at key points. It's a genuinely brilliant rework.

So, if you're after a touch of dancefloor opulence, this series in which he breathes new life into everything from yacht disco gems to platinum-selling rock anthems could be for you. The producer is in good form on volume five, variously offering up a swirling, gently dubbed-out and pleasingly Balearic take on a pop rock favourite ('Into The Future'), a throbbing revision of a poodle perm-sporting synth-pop/soft rock anthem ('Burn Burn Burn') and a chunky, tactile, disco-tinged, soft-focus re-imagining of the George Michael-esque ('Tonight'). Naturally, all are tastefully executed and add more than enough low-end weight to please contemporary dancefloors.

Review: House music and fresh modern funk are happy bedfellows on this new EP from Moniquea with the masterful production taken care of by XL Middleton who, if you ask us, cannot miss at the moment. With an unmistakable West Coast vibe characterised by punchy synth bass and leads, this A-side embraces the good times with pulsating beats and detuned chords. On the B-side, the '97 Remix pays homage to Moniquea's g-funk origins while the bonus Applejac remix of 'Hate To See It' seamlessly blends dance-oriented elements with lush synth strings reminiscent of peak-era Neptunes productions from the 2000s.

Review: John Morales is pretty universally credited with inventing the 12" when he decided he needed more run time for his remixes than could be found on a small 7" 45rpm. Those remixes were often done on the studio floor when he would cut up and splice analogue tape to insert new breaks and extended instrumentals. He remains as good as anyone at that and these new versions of Curtis Harrison's 'I Want Your Lovin' and 'I Want You All Tonight' show why. They are steamy and loved-up disco gems that have everything needed to set the floor alight- big vocals, big drums, lush synths.

Keep On Jumpin (5:29)
Review: Initially established by disco polymath Patrick Adams as a "low budget" studio band, Musique briefly burned brightly, releasing two albums and a handful of genuine dancefloor anthems. Their story started in 1978 with this double-header - produced by Adams and mixed by a youthful Francois Kevorkian - on Salsoul Records. This reissue has naturally been fully remastered for club play and is presented on rather fetching translucent fluorescent green vinyl. A-side 'In The Bush', an infectious and high-octane slab of restless disco-funk full of clipped guitar licks, propulsive bass, punchy horns and hybrid whispered/sung lead vocals, is the more celebrated and much-played of the two tracks, though the heavily orchestrated and Salsoul Orchestra style 'Keep On Jumpin' is also excellent.

No Way Back (Disco Adjustments By Mystic Slot) (7:07)
Disco Adventure (Disco Adjustments By Mystic Slot) (5:39)
Review: Most disco diggers will be aware of the DJ Harvey adjacent Black Cock series - when it launched in the early 1990s, it was one of the first hush-hush re-edit outlets around. Mystic Slot was Harvey and Gerry Rooney, and this double-header - first released 31 years ago in 1993 - is arguably their strongest moment. A-side 'No Way Back' is a Clavinet-heavy, largely instrumental revision of the Dells' infectious track of the same name, rearranged to stretch out key passages of groove, build and breakdown. It's still a fantastic re-edit, as is flipside 'Disco Adventure', a cut-and-paste dancefloor classic that builds a low-slung, sweat-soaked dub disco delight by blending the groove from a lesser-celebrated Jimmy 'Bo' Horne cut with elements borrowed from tracks by the Winners and eccentric producers Rinder & Lewis.

The Owl & Posse EP

Monsieur Van Pratt - "Guaranteed" (5:14)
Review: The Owl & Posse EP brings together several artists on one fresh 12" that explores many Leftfield disco sounds and adjacent grooves. Pete Le Freq opens things up with the vocal-infused disco-funk of 'The Way Down' complete with splashy cymbals and elastic bass. The Owl's 'JBs Funk' is a horn-led jam that draws its samples from James Brown and Fingerman & Chewy Rubs's 'Revolution NY' has some big synth strings and unifying vocal calls over a nice organic rhythm. Monsieur Van Pratt's 'Guaranteed' is a pure good time groove with joy in its bones and soul in the lung-busting diva vocals.

Review: The Saint Wax Edit Service is back with more offerings for us to bow before. This latest eclectic disco sermon comes from Pleasure Voyage and kicks off with the topical Afro disco heat of 'Jongkoloni'. 'Arzaa' has a similarly international feel with Arabic-sounding vocals over a nice striped back but simple synth-heavy groove and 'Xibi' then sinks into a lovely deep house groove with 90s influences and more worldly vocals. Last of all is 'Tudod' which has nice tight bassline twangs under pirouetting chords and vocals. A fine EP.

No Luck (9:32)
Review: There are arguably two re-editors whose scalpel works are a cut above the rest: the mighty Danny Krivit AKA Mr K, and Chicago veteran Rahaan. Both are prolific rearrangers, with Rahaan releasing some of his greatest work on Newcastle-based Hot Biscuit Recordings. He's back on that imprint here with two more tried-and-tested revisions. Opener 'One Man' is prime Rahaan re-edit action: an obscure, eccentric, horn-heavy, soul-fired, heavily orchestrated disco jam extended, cut and tweaked in all the right places, with EQs and soul levels lightly modified to ensure maximum pleasure when played over 21st century dancefloors. Arguably even better is 'No Luck', a terrific, lightly stretched-out revision of a slap bass-powered slab of early 80s disco-boogie fusion fronted by a strong and sassy female vocalist.

Review: Wilfully slapdash label Legofunk are behind some of the most infectious contemporary funk productions out today. This 3-tracker 12" comes as a trifecta of productions from The Rebel, PCJ Project, ad Vito Lalinga, all edited by the sum of their parts, Lego Edit. These are certified warmer-uppers for parties that like to dangle the essence of funk and disco on a more beatgriddedly patient tip before the noses of partygoers, before eventually giving up the gooey vocal goods.

Review: Prelude is the don when it comes to the dubbier end of disco in the 80s. So many of its releases were staples of the key New York City scene at the time and they have kept their charm over the decades. 'Beat The Street' from Sharon Redd is one of them - a track doused on echo and reverb with dancing synths layered up over analogue drums, cold claps and with her fine vocals soaring high and bright. The vocal is where it's at but the paired back instrumental is also a fine groove for some retro feels.

Get Ready For This (Ron Hardy edit) (6:22)
Review: This is a mega rare 12" version of a classic tune which will never not get big reactions. 'Get Ready For This' is a proper Philly disco soul delight with stirring vocals that are deep and powerful over fine instrumentals and funky bass effects. On the reverse is a flip by the one and only Paradis garage legend Ron Hardy. He upped the drums and allowed the vocal plenty of room to shine while tweaking the synths and melodies to sit not so loud in the mix and allow horns room to shine. A real gem from the glory days of early club culture.

Review: Multitrack Reworks is a new label that will be putting out limited edition, hand-stamped white label 12"s that are made from reworked tunes that have been constructed from the original multitracks. Kicking off the first one is the queen of soul that is Chaka Khan and a version of 'Clouds' with nice loose drums, big string builds and a silky vocal. Flip it over and you will find a brilliantly dynamic and funky new take on the most classic Grace Jones jam, 'Slave To The Rhythm.' It's packed with plenty of rich instrumental licks, a flamboyant sense of melody and of course Grace's own seductive voice.

Review: The now nicely matured Samosa label out of Italy is back with a 31st offering of its lavish disco and funk fusions. This time out the four tracker features four different artists starting with Strange and 'Hard Working' (De Gama Re-drums) which is a cosmic laced late night stomper then Frank Virgilio gets all romantic and feel good with 'Love Is Positivity.' Mosaik Kollektif opens up the flip with the deep sounds of 'Keep' (De Gama Re-drums) and last of all comes some more freewheeling funk with Monsieur Van Pratt and his 'Funk De Ibiza.'

Review: DJ Ell & Dream's 'Wings of Love' is a classic happy hardcore banger from 1997. It's not that it was particularly original when it dropped that made it so well-loved and widely played, but more that it was just an effective and feel-good gem. It was a real summer delight with sharp vocals and rap sample stabs, rushing breakdowns and of course the famous 'Mentasm' stab. Add in the reggae rhythm and bad-ass bassline and you have an unashamedly fun electric cut that will still do the business today.
