Review: Inspired by his neon-lit walks around London's docklands, crate digger Ilan Pdahtzur's 2019 compilation Night City Life marked him out as a dusty-fingered crate digger and record collector with a distinctive, synth-heavy musical vision. It made him the toast of the selector/collector community, but more than that it was a genuinely superb selection of obscure, hard-to-find cuts. This belated sequel is every bit as essential and filled, unsurprisingly, with rare and lesser-known gems. Highlights are too plentiful to mention, but our current favourites include Sharon & Tracey's 'The Sheik' (a belly-dancing inspired slab of TB-303 bass-driven house hedonism), Jennifer's 1992 Euro-house gem 'Come Into My Life', Scicilian musician Claudio D'Ignoti's boogie-era treat 'Ache Per Noir', and the fashion scene inspired leftfield synth-pop of Lena's 'Embrasse-Moi (Strumentale)'.

Review: You can always count on Z Records to bring a deep-digging, dedicated approach to anything they put out, and that goes double for their flawless Under The Influence series. The 10th volume in the series sees them inviting the incredible Chicago-born DJ Rahaan to select some seriously headsy cuts from his collection, carefully cleaned up, de-clicked and remastered for the best listening experience. Review: Dance Music From Planet Earth is a new sub-label from Ransom Note that kicks off with a heritage compilation, Dream The Dream. It looks back in great detail at UK Techno, House and Breakbeat 1990-1994 with Richard Sen as the man in control. He was a DJ back in those days, playing the most epic raves around Europe and taking some of the photos which now form the artwork for this collection. His obsessive record collecting from those days is reflected here across a series of sometimes obscure but always brilliant UK tunes for the worlds of ambient, techno, tribal house, breakbeat and early trance.

Review: The last few years have really seen Paul Woolford reach the top of his game in many different ways. Be it bowel emptying rave as Special Request, festival baiting piano house tunes or chart topping pop dance crossovers under his own name, the man is proving himself to have a real golden touch. He sure does crank out all these tunes at a prolific rate, too, but you still feel he does everything with meticulous precision. This DJ Kicks is a case in point. It touches on all the many different facets of his sound from glossy and feel good house to early Chicago classics, post-rave dreamscapes to brutal jungle breaks. What a legend.

Review: The third volume in the Unity series from Norm Talley's label Upstairs Asylum is another one packed with big hitters, many of who are US house mainstays. Jordan Fields opens up with 'It's An Interesting Thought', a heady number with cosmic pads twinkling up high. Black Eyes brings some rawness with the astral sounds of 'Get Down For The Hydro' and Chicago master Boo Williams offers more techno-leaning sounds than usual on 'The Place To Go.' The loop expert that is Delano Smith shows off those skills once more with his swirling and hypnotic 'Trapped Inside'. Miguel Herrnandez also stands out with his string-laced delight, 'Sea Roots'. An essential and authentic collection once again.

Review: Fast-rising French label Phonogramme has released some genuinely brilliant music of late, and this three-tracker - a collaboration between long-serving Ukrainian producer Vakula and fellow Eastern European artist Logich AKA L.G - is another must-check EP. The pair hit the ground running with 'FD', a deliciously mind-altering, 13-minute concoction in which bubbly acid lines, spacey electronics and dubbed-out synth sounds rise and fall atop a jacking, 116 BPM deep house beat. Elsewhere, 'I Love Talking To You, Even Though I've Got Nothing To Say' is a deep, dusty, low-slung and analogue-rich slab of lo-fi deep house excellence, while 'Beyond Content' is an ultra-spacey exercise in tease-and-release dancefloor hypnotism that runs to 11 mesmerising minutes. If you like your house deep, you need this in your life.

Review: Lee Burridge's All Day Dream has one of the most recognisable sounds in house music. It's deep, its; dreamy, it's organic. Within that framework, he has recruited plenty of fresh talents to find their own niche and now serves up some sounds from his current squad on this lovely summer sampler. Luca Saporito kicks off with the melancholic chords of "Next To Me Ft. Dalma Puska's, Marian (Ar) locks you into a state of hypnosis with 'Obsidian' and Pole Folder, Gmj & Matter bring subtle day time trance vibes to 'Voyage Austral' which is rich in prog energy. Review: Things were different back in 2001 and the dance music world was less attuned to the responsibilities it has towards the marginalised communities that birthed the genre back in the 80s. For that reason, it's unlikely any new compilation featuring music by mostly white artists would be called Africanism Allstars these days, but alas that was the case with this collection when it was originally released. Title aside, the music stands up with a chunky house sound and plenty of tribal grooves featuring big names like DJ Gregory, Martin Solveig, Bob Sinclair and Soga amongst others.

Review: Toy Tonics is a label that has always done house music well - it doesn't follow trends, it doesn't look to reinvent the wheel, it doesn't repeat the same old tricks. What it does is serve up superb good grooves with plenty of character that are always going to get any crowd going no matter the time or place. The label now goes big with this double 12" of Gomma Dancefloor Gems Vol 1. It is, they say, a collection of "Y2K indie dance tracks" that were all originally released on the German Gomma Records label between 2001 and 2010 and were right up there with music on labels like James Murphy's DFA and Trevor Jackson's Output Records as the hottest of the day.

From the mid-nighties onwards it has been behind some of the genre's most enduring hits and now on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, it celebrates all that rich history with a superb double vinyl album, Henry Street Music 1994-2024 (30th Anniversary Edition). It kicks off with an age old staple from The Bucketheads that is one of the most mis-sung tunes of all time (it's 'these sounds', not 'pizza') and then comes a loopy filter gem from Armand Van Helden. 'Ill Street Theme' from 95 North is a nice old school bumper and Jonnick's 'Play The World' is another good time delight

Review: Following the recent release of the first retrospective of Andrew Weatherall remixes of Heavenly Recordings material, the long-serving London label has delivered a second volume of inspired reworks from the late, great DJ/producer. Like its predecessor, this speedy sequel contains reworks delivered by Weatherall at different points over a near 30 year period. It's all spectacular, of course, but our current favourites include a chugging, 2009 punk-funk revision of Doves' 'Compulsion', the post-punk dub headiness of Audiobooks' 2018 cut 'Dance Your Life Away', a vintage, electro-fired Two Lone Swordsmen dub of Saint Etienne and a rare, percussion-rich and extremely hard to find Sabres of Paradise tweak of Espiritu's 'Boninta Manana'.

Review: French label Wagram is a real powerhouse when it comes to putting together authoritative compilations. They have done them in all manner of sonic words from soul to disco to techno and pop. Next up is a new volume of their ongoing Africanism series which is led by Bob Sinclar and features, among others, Olivia De Lanzac, DJ Gregory, Nark & Baker, Martin Solveig and Nick Chatelain & Danny Chatelain. It is house music coloured with a wide world of influences from the sub-continent with funk, soul and Afro all making for a colourful collection of hits from across several sub-scenes.

Review: Wagram's always comprehensive compilation series is back with another deep dive into a specific sound, and this time it is French touch aka the Gallic take on early house that is in the spotlight. Plenty of the early pioneers feature like Bob Sinclar, DJ Gregory, Saint Germain and Tour-Maubourg, but so do some more recent explorers of that sound, namely Folamour whose gorgeously sampled and gospel-tinged opener 'Ya Just Need 2 Believe In Yaself' is an early highlight here. Add in some other favourites like DJ Deep's 'Learn 2 Love' and De Pompidou's 'Can't Be With You' and you have a great overview of this popular house sub-genre.

Review: French label Wagram knows a thing or two about putting out superb compilations that take a widescreen look at a diverse array of genres. For this latest double album release it carries on in its Africanism series with a second volume of house sounds with an Afro undertone. French legend Bob Sinclair appears several times with his lavish house sounds, and countryman Martin Solveig brings the heat with 'Heartbeat', a bright, prickly and vocal jam with plenty of irresistible hooks. Review: Over the last seven years, Shall Not Fade has become one of Britain's most consistent outlets for quality club music, with a vast roster of artists, a string of offshoot imprints, and a release schedule that refuses to settle on one specific sub-genre or sound. It's fitting, then, that the label's seventh-birthday celebration - a wonderfully produced triple-vinyl compilation of previously unheard cuts - does a fine job in summarising this eclectic, all-action approach. Review: Toy Tonics has established itself as one of house music's most interesting modern labels. It deals in all the myriad niche styles with equal elan, and always manage to call upon producers with something original to add to the conversation. The musical take on house is exemplified again on this second volume off their Mushroom House series from Kaputt. There are bright, glistening melodic cuts from Harry Wolfmann, tribal grooves from Kiwi, deep basement tackle featuring Italian designer Mathew Burlon and typically balmy and elegant grooves from the always on form DJ Sprinkles. The whimsical charm and lightness of touch displayed by Art Alfie on 'Dance To The Conga' is also to behold.

Review: Gomma played a vital role in the popularisation of the indie-dance explosion that happened some 20 years ago now. Best known for being spearheaded by US indie outfit LDC Sound system, it combined dance, disco, wave, post-punk and more into a party-ready sound that found favour with both ravers and guitar heads. Review: Mule Musiq boss Toshiya Kawasaki has pulled out all the stops for the sixth installment of the label's popular I'm Starting To Feel Okay compilation series. Whereas previous editions issued on sublabel Endless Flight have been restricted to single CDs and 12" samplers, this sixth round of Okay arrives across a double CD and two double pack vinyl editions. Furthermore it's packed to the rafters with exclusives and unreleased tracks from the label's stable of like-minded deep house producers. As you'd expect, this first part has plenty to enjoy from the hypnotic, Detroit-influenced pulse of Julius Steinhoff's "Downtown" and Axel Boman's woozy, picturesque "Anytime Is Fine" (which seemingly features a riff inspired by an obscure boogie classic), to the sinewy strings and bustling rhythms of Johannes Brecht's "London" and Fred P's typically musical "Electric Bridge". Classier than San Diego bruv.

Review: It's all change on the 14th edition of Compost's long-running Future Sounds of Jazz series, with the baton being passed to two new curators: Permanent Vacation bosses Benjamin Frolich and Tom Bioly. It was perhaps a wise move, because the duo - compiling a disc each - have taken a much more liberal approach to "jazz" as a concept. The result is a hugely entertaining two-disc trawl that variously takes in immaculate deep house (Isolee, Marcellus Pittman), inspired electronica (The Abstract Eye), acid-flecked jazz-funk/house fusion (Tee Mango), hypnotic techno and spacey tech-house (Matt O'Brien, Aubrey, Herzel), synth-Balearica (Jex Opolis, I:Cube remixing Jose Padilla), ambient (Move D, Luke Abbot) and, of course, proper contemporary jazz (Yusuf Kamaal, Roman Flugel).

Review: PIV Records is a Dutch deep house label with a consistent look and feel, keeping the energy up and staying true to the soulful roots of the sound. To commemorate their 2023 manoeuvres at ADE this year, the label have opted to put out a double pack sampler which shows off everything the label is about right now. If you need a grab bag of upfront joints to get a crowd greased up good and proper, look no further. Hector Couto brings the looped up sample bounce to 'Soul Train' while Lauren Lo Sung takes things deep and dreamy without skimping on the bump for 'Free Your Body'. Also watch out for Kellie Allen's 'The Music Box', which has a funk all of its own on a record full of distinctive grooves.

Happy Land: A Compendium Of Electronic Music From The British Isles 1992-1996 Volume 1 (2xLP + insert)

Review: Ed Cartwright's first compilation, which is landing in two parts (this is the first), celebrates the period between 1992 and '96, when electronic music in Britain was going in a multitude of different directions, and the (ultimately unfulfilled) 'brave new dawn' offered by Blair's New Labour government was still some way off. Cartwright's selections thus flit between gorgeous UK techno (Syzygy's 1992 gem 'Meditation'), sub-heavy post-bleep brilliance (Cabaret Voltaire), classic IDM (the Black Dog's Ken Downie as Xeper), mind-mangling slow acid (Thunderhead's excellent 'True Romance'), anti-Criminal Justice Bill material (Ultramarine's 'Happy Land') and some early Matthew Herbert brilliance ('Housewife'). Throw in extensive liner notes from dance music historian Matt Anniss, and you have a fantastic package.

Review: While there's no over-arching concept behind the series, it's always safe to assume that any new Selects compilation from Global Underground will be packed to the rafters with brand-new house and techno that tends towards the melodic, atmospheric, glassy-eyed and tactile. Volume eight certainly ticks those boxes, with 12 highlights from the (more expansive) mixed version stretched across two slabs of purple vinyl. Review: SlothBoogie is back to encourage you once more to dance with your friends courtesy of this third volume of tantalising musical treats. The London crew has tapped up 16 artists for this one, with new names brought in and soon to find a sweet spot. Review: Strictly Rhythm's 30th anniversary series of "Best Of" double-packs should be an essential purchase for all those looking to grab some high-grade U.S house from the 1990s and 2000s. As you'd expect, there's some genuine peak-time gold to be found on this second salvo in the series. Review: Rutilance is back to show off the array of talent it has on its books here with a third volume of its various artists series. There are some heavy hitters on this one, not least opener and French tech titan Janeret who pumps the party with its full flavour cosmic twister 'People'. Kolter brings his textbook sense of neon colour and pacey but spaced-out sounds on 'Neptune' and DJ Steaw offers two pearls - first comes the gorgeous vocal depths of 'Not Around" (Nj mix) then the more raw house vibes of 'You Gat.' They are just some of the standouts here on a fine double 12".

Review: For their second release, Sound Migration has taken a deep dive into the music that soundtracked the infamous Goa party scene - initially populated by exiled hippies, but later a holiday haven for British E casualties and young Israeli ravers - between 1987 and 94. The tracks were chosen by scene stalwart (and key DJ) Ray Castle, making the blend of post-industrial EBM, early trance, new beat, formative progressive house and acid techno accurate and authentic. Review: The term Afro-house seems to be getting chukka bout ever more freely and ever less responsibly these days. This second volume of Afro Rhythms from Comet France does have some credible and authentic claims on the term though with source material by Afro beat legend Tony Allen amongst others getting some fine remix treatment. Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer go first with an elastic dub, Jeff Sharel layers in more minimal textures to his remix of Brighter Nights and on the flip is a standout from Ed Banger's Krazy Baldhead which is all tin-pot percussion, shuffling broken rhythms and off grid madness.
