Review: After an absence of a few years, 40 Thieves return to Leng Records with one of their most special releases to date: a hook-up with long-time Patrick Adams collaborator Gary Davis and long serving soulstress Cinammon Jones. What's on offer is a re-make of one of Jones' songs, 'The Gift', whose sweet lyrics celebrate the arrival of a new day. 40 Thieves take, explored first in the A-side 'Disco Mix', sounds like it was designed to be danced to during a San Francisco sunrise - think dub disco delays, hypnotic grooves, bubbly electronics, languid guitar licks and gentle melodies. Over on the flip, they take the track further into 'woozy 6am open air dancing territory' on a superb, stretched out 'Disco Dub' mix, before peppering a killer drum track with spaced-out electronics on the 'Beats' version.

Review: La Menace is a shadowy collective hailing from France committed to the craft of minimal tech house, with the focus squarely on the tunes on a series of various artist releases. This time around, the proceedings get going in fizzy, freakout style with Abdul Raeva's proggy stormer 'Concorde', while Ginko locks into a slender beat construction on 'Jungle Palazzo'. Review: Techno team-ups don't come bigger than this, as Drumcode's overlord of all things mega-tech Adam Beyer links up with Chicago's agent provocateur Green Velvet to give you your next stadium shaking anthem. This isn't the first time Beyer and Velvet have worked together - you could find them on the 2018 track 'Space Date' for one thing - but there's a sense 'Simulator' will become their calling card as a formidable double act. It's simply huge, catchy as hell and full of all the fireworks you could wish for from a super-sized techno workout, all guided by Velvet's unmistakable voice ducking and diving around the expertly engineered mix.

Review: Techno arriving on 7" is not an all too common sight, but why not? This release from the fledgling Dispari out of Germany suggests it works well. Cloud Management and Gavsborg take one side each, starting with the former. Their 'Tempentary Dance' pairs thudding and broken kick drum patterns with dreamy and rising synth sequences and spoken words. It's brilliantly beguiling. The flip then finds Gavsborg offering 'Did Not Make This For Jah_9' (feat Shanique Marie) which is dark and moody, dubbed out and dystopian deep techno.

Review: Deep house doesn't get any better than when it's from scene-pioneer Chez Damier. The US legend has been finding the most sensuous and emotive sounds for decades, not only as a producer but also as a label boss. His House of Chez label cooks up some more goodness here with his own collab with H2H opening up with mystic Middle Eastern melodies drifting over smooth beats. Damian Rausch's remix then brings something more heavy and El Kazed heads off to the stars on waves of cosmic synth lushness. Review: Nation of Jak offshoot Dirty Blends was established by label chief Melvin Oliphant as a vehicle for "interpretations" and "homages" - in plain-speak hush-hush reworks, tribute tracks and those that sample liberally. The label's latest release is a compilation of sorts, featuring as it does cuts from a trio of artists. The Falcon steps up first with title track 'Sound The Alarm', a raw, jacking, bouncy and positive mind-melding blend of lo-fi synth stabs, sweat-soaked beats, fire alarm noises and restless drum machine fills. Over on side B, Grizzly Knuckles' 'Mad Bell' - a breathless, house tempo techno workout built around a nagging synth-bell loop - is followed by label regular The Jak's 'Aftermath', which sits somewhere between jacking lo-fi techno, UK funky and stab-happy Soca-house.

Review: Romanian label Playedby is dropping a couple of EPs in quick succession and this one from G76 is a leftfield one. It features the same track split over two sides of wax in two parts. 'Volume Figure' (part 1) is the sort of abstract work that you might get from Ricardo Villalobos - silvery and filtered vocals bring a sense of AI futurism to clicking beats and wispy sine waves. The rhythm grows in stature as wet claps and snares join the mix, and on the flip side, it turns into a more gritty and propulsive tech house cut for late-night afters.

Review: We first got wind that the unstoppable music making machine and generally positive life force that is Leeds legend Paul Woolford would be remixing one of the hottest new bands of recent years some time ago, so we're delighted to finally get our hands on the results. Assuming his Special Request alias but in truth sounding more like what Woolford does under his own name, this remix of Gabriels's 'Angels & Queens' is all about bringing hands in the air festival house energy, big piano chords and allowing the original vocal to bring that gorgeous sense of soul. It's a perfect meeting of pop and dance, as is often the case with Woolford's remix work.

Review: 'Love & Hate In a Different Time', one of the Gabriels' sonically sweetest but most lyrically hard-hitting singles to date, may seem an unusual choice to remix, even if the 2020 release did feature a stomping groove reminiscent of Northern Soul. Greg Wilson and Che have done a great job in re-imagining it for dancefloors on their 'full length remix', though, wrapping the original's simmering swings and Jacob Lusk's incredible vocals - smothered in reverb and delay - around a rolling, 1970s style disco groove. The pair also a delivers an 'extended original mix', which stretches out Gabriels' 2020 single version for greater dancefloor pleasure, and a spine-tingling, effects-laden 'acapella' take. Simply essential.

Review: A new four-track EP reflecting ever-expanded horizons for the band, 'Bloodline' is the latest output from loose-limbed, soul-stirring funk band Gabriels. Quickly finding fans in the likes of Elton John, Celeste, Paul Weller, Benji B, and Gilles Peterson, Gabriels should soon find plenty more on a record that could soundtrack a David Lynch epic; such is its drama, its suspenseful, late-night orchestral ruminations. Capped by frontman Lusk's voice - a weapon that swoops through the octaves breathlessly - Gabriels have that rare ability to make you re-evaluate music, and what it can do, in a heartbeat. Whilst Lusk provides the wow factor with that ridiculous larynx, Gabriels are very much a close-knit trio. Producer, keyboardist (and full-time video director) Ryan Hope hails from Sunderland but calls LA home. Fellow producer-composer and violinist Ari Balouzian, a man with endless musical projects on the go at any one time, gives Gabriels' songs a real 'feel' to them. Sultry, soulful mood music certainly isn't the band's modus operandi, but this new experimental EP should paint an altogether more rounded idea of where Gabriels are at today.

Review: Soul and Gospel group Gabriels and their 'Love & Hate In A Different Time' gets some proper remix attention with house legends Kerri Chandler and X-Press. Each remixer gets a side each to themselves on this jam-packed future classic. X-Press takes side 1 and includes a more vocal mix and then an alternate dub version. Both versions are up-tempo and perfect for the dancefloor just depends on the time of night which one you might go to. For the B-side, Kerri Chandler takes a similar approach. The vocal mix being a bit more soulful while the '623 Again' version goes deeper. These remixers are like a match made in heaven for turning these into house gems. This guaranteed to be in many DJs crates and many best of lists.

Review: Following a couple of impressive appearances on R.A.N.D. Muzik, Jay Gadian is back in action with this new drop for US label Space Dust. This is quintessential electro business dealing in icy, dystopian tones peppered with crafty sonic detailing. If 'Sensory' is something of a pensive opener, 'Green Dimension' soon shakes up the program with its hyphy leads and dirty, twisting bassline. 'East' is an airy affair which has a little more 80s flavour referencing back to the likes of Jonzun Crew, and '20 Or More' plays around with the rhythm for a more fractured framework around the darting shards of synths and sampling.

Review: Samosa is doing what's right for it and disco lovers by double-dropping to start off the New Year with a bang. The Italian label has got a new VA EP arriving at the same time as this second volume of its African series. The second volume is another fresh one with an array of artists kicking off with Vincent Galgo who brings some raw percussive energy to 'J'ngolo'. Matalo!'s 'Zaire' gets more down and dirty with some rugged rhythms and Leslie Lello's 'Alcyone' has a joyous feel thanks to the big horns. It's De Gama's 'ETA' which then shuts down things with some Afro-vocal hypnotism.

Review: The Gallery series of edits and reworks has already dropped some killer cuts, though we're no nearer discovering the identities of the 'unknown artists' behind the imprint and its fine collection of re-appropriated disco workouts. On 'Don't Wait For The Doctor', a single-sided affair, they dip their toes into the sometimes murky world of the mash-up/bootleg remix. Of course, it's a tasteful and well-crafted affair, with our mysterious heroes combining a gently tweaked, effects-laden instrumental re-edit of First Choice Salsoul classic 'Doctor Love', with vocals borrowed from another Larry Levan favourite, NYC Peech Boys' proto-house classic 'Don't Make Me Wait'. The nods to the Paradise Garage legend don't stop there, either, with the infamous laughter sample associated with his DJ sets and remixes making an appearance from time to time too.

Review: Whoever Gallery are, they're a wilfully obscure exercise in metatextuality, with the digital frontispiece of this instrumental disco edits EP depicting two gallery punters idly loitering around the blown-up 12" record, as if fawning over it in a white cube. Whatever the case, these are two mysterious post-mid-70s disco-funk edits, which seem to make a mockery of the exclusivity culture endemic to the art world (a maligned practice that goes comparatively uncritiqued in the realm of dance music) - indeed, so far, the tracks have been played out solely by DJ Harvey and Artwork. Obviously, that means this 12" is worth your one dollar... right?!

Review: So the legend goes: Tokyo dance music aficionados DJs Nori, Fukuba, Alex From Tokyo, and Kenji Hasegawa came together sometime in 2003, with but one ultimate goal: to bring together, in their own words, the best music, with the best sound system, the best hospitality, by the best management staff, in the best location. Review: Gasoline originally released the superb Snap Your Neck album back in 2005 on a digipack CD via Pamplemousse Productions and La Fondation. It has never since been reissued but now Beatsqueeze Records has secured the rights and servers it up on this 7" yellow slab in limited quantities. It covers plenty of hip-hop ground across the three tracks and also includes a trio of 'Skip Proof Loops' versions of 'Scratch FX'. Review: Gaucho dropped his still classic 'Dance Forever' back in 1983 and this reissue has specially mastered the whole thing ready for deployment on modern dancefloors. It first arrives in its original format and has raw and dusty drum machine energy overlaid with insistent percussion and splashy hits that all build towards the release of some majestic Italo arps. The Club Version is a little more direct and then last of all comes 'Dance Forever' (Musta & Stefano Ritteri remix) which extends the breaks and allows the sci-fi synth work extra room to work its charms.

Review: After debuting on Kaizenrecordsberlin back in 2020, Gauvain finally makes a second appearance with this sure-footed EP for Shaque & DJ Tjizza's Berlin-based label Mood Waves. There's a sense of the trancey tech house scene in the playful threads running through these tracks - cheeky synth lines with a little wriggle to them and plenty of ear-catching samples. 'Suspended Animation' is an especially flamboyant cut, but really they're all out to bring a little naughtiness to the dancefloor and inspire some sharply defined figures to be thrown. Even when things get moodier on 'The Pier, 1962', there's an irrepressible sense of fun which leaves a lasting impression.

Review: Marvin Gaye's catalogue is jam-packed with gems and so it's not hard to pick a couple for remix treatment. This one is a particularly nice pair of alternative mixes that find the Detroit legend at his very best, taken from the Deluxe Edition of his masterful 1976 album I Want You, mixed by Kevin Reeves and now remastered by Ellen Fitton but never, before now, appearing on 12" before. First up on the A-side is 'I Wanna Be Where You Are', a cover of a Michael Jackson hit beautifully stretched from its original 1:17 to over six minutes. ''I Want You' (alternate version), meanwhile, introduced something of a shift in Gaye's sound towards more disco.

Review: Russian label Samizdat follows up its notable first release with a second 12", this time from Genning. It is classy and sophisticated outing all the way with this one as opener 'Stair To The Sky's Rooftop' soon sets you off on a trip to the stars with its slick rhythms and glistening celestial chords. 'Window To The Dub' follows more of a tech house template with loopy drums and bass that rumble up and down and 'Summer Lighting' then zones you out on some lovely pads and frictionless drums. Last off all is 'Mystic Lakes' which takes off on balmy pads and plump, cuddly but dynamic drums.

It's another lovely 12" that kick off with the escapist tropical charms and lovely naive 80s synths of 'I Love U.' Review: Drumcode's Elevate series hits a third instalment here and this time it is a three tracker with solo cuts from three big names. Tini Gessler kicks off with 'Nothing Expected' which is a teeth-gritting and white knuckle techno roller. Marie Vaunt serves up monstrously large and slamming kicks on 'Technology' and then runs them through with brutal synth lines that spray about with their own dark energy. It's a truly edgy cut before BEC's 'Humanoid' layers up hard tech drums that slam down firmly with a warped lead which leads you late into the night. A trio of high impact weapons, for sure.

Review: The Outer Edge rounds off their series reworking tracks from the archive of lesser-known German 80s outfit Ghia. This time round, they're offering re-imaginations of an instrumental synth-funk track first featured on last year's Don't Look LP, 'Message From The Other Side'. This time round, the band has recruited vocalist Adrian Prestel and re-imagined it as colourful and authentic synth-number simply titled 'The Other Side'. As well as a solid instrumental take, we're also treated to a superb Marian Tone take which blends bits of the 1985 demo with elements of the 2023 re-recording. Elsewhere, there are also three takes on previous single 'Out of Luck': squelchy and crunchy neo-boogie vocal and instrumental versions courtesy of DJ Friction (the disco one, not the d&b producer of the same name) and a more low-slung, dub disco style instrumental revision by Soundrays.

Review: Earlier this year, DJ Scientist stumbled upon another early Ghia composition tucked away in the depths of a master tape. It was a treasure too precious to remain unheard. Sadly, the original track couldn't see the light of day due to sound quality and issues with the original vocals. To make matters more disappointing, no instrumental version survived. Thus, the only way to share this catchy boogie funk track with the world was to recreate it from scratch. And so, the Ghia saga unfolds once more, but in this chapter, there's a new and unique twist. 'Out Of Luck' draws its roots from the aforementioned lost track, originally composed by the group in 1985. This time, however, the song has been expertly reworked by Marian Tone, with new vocals by Adriano Prestel. The outcome? Quite possibly one of the smoothest and most refreshing modern funk tunes you'll hear this year.

It's a fresh mix of house styles from across several sub genres starting with 'Study War No More' with its dry beats but catchy skip and playful synth flourishes. The title cut gets more heads down and driving with a darker US garage sound. 'Marcus Garvey' is a hands in the air piano jam with instantly feel good impact and soulful samples and 'Hora De Bailar' shuts down with a deeper sound. Review: There's a nicely meditational vibe to Camilo Gil's 'Skydream', gliding along with a hint of breakbeat sidewinding to its beat and some deep jungle (as opposed to junglist) atmospherics. The Jef K & St Jhons remix turns it on its head, making it sturdier and adding swagger, not to mention a dash of 80s synth flourish here and there. Rodrigo Valdivia's 'Acid Rain' has a similarly global feeling to it, extra dimensional ambient house with proper tribal rhythm foundations remixed into even spacier territory by Peter F Spiess.

Review: The concept of 'life moving fast' is a sentiment we can all recognise, but fewer yet find the neighbouring sentiment - that you are faster than you think, and you can keep up. You have to find it in your heart, which is why you have to make it to the B-side of Layton Giordani's 'Life Moves Fast', his latest for Drumcode, to know it. Philosophising aside, we are urged to "stop to look around once in a while" on the A-side's shifting, maddening tension-builds. The B restores our humanity and mitigates the sense of urgency with a more meditative mover, which fittingly revels in more post-drop stasis compared to the A (though it's still not without its detuned rave stabs and crazy-driving bass hits).

His new release is a short, sharp two-tracker which features two very different offerings from this highly decorated new-wave techno titan. 'Phantom' is a massive, grinding beast driven by full-fat synths, dramatic breakdowns and explosive drops - if you appreciate Drumcode, you know what the deal is. Things get mixed up on the flip as 'Thrillseeker' nudges the tempo up, toys with a nimble rhythm section and pings some tripped out effects and playful sample juggling around the frequency range. It's an intriguing look into the other side of Layton Giordani.

Luckily, those with their best interests at heart do the glorious work of repressing the tracks 'Over You' and 'Shining Through' - as well as their slightly different dance mixes - to EP-length wax. It's as if this were a G20 summit for some of the genre's most eminent lords, as we hear Goldie, Jubei, Submotive and Lenzman all team up for a four-way rampage. Both tunes on this lethal weapon, through well-placed Reeses and complex metallic snare rebounds, convey the mood of utter dark fantasy. Review: We always feel that a one-sided 12" is a real sign that an artist are label are hugely happy with what they are seeing up. And Adam Goldstone has every right to feel that way frankly as his 'Edge of the Night' is a classic deep house sermon that will bring plenty of emotions to the fore when it is dropped, either in the dead of night or just as the sun is coming up one morning, much like a tune such as Ron & Chez's 'Morning Factory'. The smoky vocals are well-treated, the smeared pads bring the soul and the drums and cuddly and warm. Perfect.

Review: 2-step gets speedy on this cheek-biter from Danny Goliger and Choopsie, two relative unknowns on the scene, yet whose efforts clearly need to be brought to a much wider audience. The A-sider 'AF Rex' sits somewhere between classic 2-step and cutesy TikTok reel music, but it errs far less on the side of knife-edge autotuned lyrics, preferring chirrupy vocal one-shots and instrumental fun instead. Think Doss, but shiftier. 'Cycling' brings up the B with far murkier yet no less lively scenes.

Review: Gonno is one of the artists right at the heart of the current Japanese house and techno scene. He now lands on the Taiwanese label Jin with the sort of stylish sounds that have earned him that reputation. He opens ups with sophisticated house of 'Energy Flash' with its drum loops gently rocking you back and forth with diffuse pads bring the soul. The Voiski remix is a more melancholic cut with bittersweet synths riding ups and down the scale and warped bass propping it up from below. Things take a turn towards twisted and textural techno on 'Final Hate' (original mix) then into a world of ambient beauty on 'Arabica' to send you home feeling soothed.

Review: The rightly lauded Bogota producer Felipe Gordon has always turned out plenty of high quality music and this year already he has lined up a new instrumental hip-hop album Psychedelic Melancholia. But that's not all because now he arrives on the much loved Razor-N-Tape with his fine Flutes Of Gold EP. The title track is pure joy with shuffling and jazz-infused house grooves topped with lush chords and golden melodies. 'Right Beside Me' has more swing to it and an intriguing vocal sample that is perfect for late night dances. 'Homage To Bossa' has Latin influences and 'Acid Party At Santa Barbara' has prickly 303s twisting and turning through another warm house arrangement.

'The Warehouse Beast' is a mid tempo house cut with deep drums and plenty of focus on the pixelated chords that churn up top over tighter stabs that keep things moving. 'It's Over (You Can Drive My Car)' is another unhurried cut with smeared synth warmth and hiccuping hits. His new album Psychedelic Melancholia is just about to drop on Hip Dozer and is already much talked about, while he has also found time to turn out this fresh EP for Dutch label Clone. It opens up with the delightfully deep, dusty and Detroit-style house of 'No Words' then things get more physical but no less warm and vibes with the cursing grooves of 'Travel Through Your Mind'. 'No Words' (Byron The Aquarius dub mix) then boils things back down into a steamy dub stew and a second remix of the same tune by the American brings a little more playful and jazzy synth-funk.

Review: A regular to the Shall Not Fade output, Columbian producer Felipe Gordon returns for a collaborative EP with Belgian artist, Krewcial, for a deep dive into their shared sonic world. An ode to their shared love of cycling, this EP traverses many textures and terrains, ascending into moments of brightness and descending into deep atmospheres. The first track, '1972', kicks off with an outer casing of flecked percussion, before the introduction of a driving, hill-climbing bass line. Track number two, 'Dying', features rousing choir vocals, bringing a gospel-sensibility to the firmly funk-tied bass line. On the B-side, 'Answer' has a careening melody with hints of nostalgia, side-stepping between satisfyingly clean kick drums and brusque snares. The flip also features a remix by Session Victim - a beautifully floaty reimagining of the more grounded original. A highly multifaceted release and a strong addition to Shall No Fade's already gleaming catalogue.
