Salamanca Issue #3
Salamanca Issue #3 (hand-stamped numbered 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: SAL 03. Rel: 05 May 15
Afrobot - "Changes" (6:41)
Joe's Bakery - "Night Time Logic" (5:11)
Dolly Savalas - "Man On A Boat" (5:21)
Review: Three deeply dug edits from the Salamanca crew: Afrobot takes a stomping southern rock cut and gives it such an industrial strength facelift, it transcends the concept of edit and exists in its own entity. Next up is punk funk boogie showdown from Joe's Bakery. All New Order style vocals and an ESG backline, "Night Time Logic" will throw any dancefloor into a frenzy. Finally we hit the orchestral Italo sounds of Dolly Savalas' "Man On A Boat" which sits prettily between Jim Noir and ELO. Immense. Hand stamped and limited to 300 copies... You know what to do.

Spacelex - "Byzantion"

Review: Four track EP of thumping cosmic discoid weirdness from the mysterious Heavy Rotation camp. If you can imagine a glorious amalgamation of the best bits of Beppe Loda, Space, Giorgio Moroder and Cerrone then your potent imagination might have a sound similar to the two tracks from Albion. On the flip, Spacelex rework a moog heavy weirdo disco punk funk odyssey regarding the rise and fall of a Roman Emperor. Extra points for the vintage 70s sci fi sleeve design.goes here

Dancefloor Edits
Cat: LGF 014. Rel: 17 Jan 24
Alexny - "Meneao" (6:03)
Siggatunez - "Boogie" (6:29)
Mosaik Kollektif - "Twisted City" (5:49)
Dj Laurel - "Let The Good Time" (4:29)
Lego Edit - "Party Freaks" (Lego party dub) (5:59)
Review: You can always count on the Legofunk crew to bring you disco and funk edits from less mined sources that will absolutely rock it on the floor. On this instalment we have five different joints to get stuck into, from the slow Afro house throw down of Alexny's 'Meneao' to Siggatunez's slinky, soulful groover 'Boogie'. Look out for the low tempo seduction of DJ Laurel's 'Let The Good Time', which will get a warm-up slot thoroughly juiced for the night to come. The Lego Edit 'party dub' of 'Party Freaks' heads more explicitly towards peak-time house, but as ever it's delivered with heart and soul thanks to the vintage source material powering the track.

Gazel EP
Gazel EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FW 002. Rel: 17 Oct 16
Mehmet Aslan & Dario Rohrbach - "Gazel"
Alma Negra - "In The Beginning"
Review: With his star most definitely in ascendance, Mehmet Aslan brings his Turkish tones to his own Fleeting Wax label with some assistance from Dario Rohrbach on the anthemic, big room burner "Gazel". It's the kind of dramatic twist on house music that will inspire a fevered reaction from the floor, respectfully channeling exotic tropes while retaining a necessary functionality. Meanwhile Rohrbach's collaborative project Alma Negra resides on the B-side with the more delicate, North African simmer of "In The Beginning", tapping into the tradition of transcendental music in an engrossing fashion. Both sides represent the thrill to be found in crossing over ethnic music with Western club tropes.

Daniele Baldelli - "Jazz Carnival" (5:02)
Azymuth - "Young Embrace" (Daniele Baldelli & Marco Dionigi remix) (4:15)
Daniele Baldelli - "Young Embrace" (3:22)
Review: The legendary Discoteca Cosmic resident Daniele Baldelli played these two tracks by MPB-jazz group Azymuth in his DJ sets extensively back in 1979. Today he remixes and models them as he deems most suited to a Cosmic DJ set. Their famous hit 'Jazz Carnival' is reworked as a hypnotic and bass-driven stomper in conjunction with Marco Dionigi (Quantistic Division), while Baldelli flies solo for a low slung cover version up next. Over on the flip, Baldelli taps Dionigi one more time for a session of meditative slo-mo tribal groove on their rework of 'Young Embrace' also taken from the acclaimed Light As A Feather LP.

RoBa Che Scotta
RoBa Che Scotta (Ichisan remix)
Space Scribble
Review: For those with an interest in the lefttield side of European disco, the recent renaissance of legendary Italian DJ Daniele Baldelli has been an exciting development. For those outside of Northern Italy, Baldelli remained a marginal figure for many years. Although he - and, it could be argued, compatriot Beppe Loda - invented the "cosmic disco" sound in the late 1970s and early 80s, it's only in the last decade that the sound has been celebrated across the globe. This collaborative EP with fellow Italian spinner DJ Rocca is his first release since 2009. It sees the duo give contemporary nudisco a fresh new twist, adding obvious Italo, cosmic and old skool electro influences. Nowhere is this more evident than on lead track "RoBa Che Scotta", where the veteran duo add simplistic, stargazing melodies to a rough, appregiated groove. There's beauty within the heavy analogue beats and bassline, but they never lose sight of the dancefloor. Ichisan provides a slightly grubbier, disco-centric rework for those who dig straight-up nudisco. The EP finishes with the title track. Similarly melodic and intergalactic in its construction, 'Space Scribble' has an endearing, child-like quality thanks to a sprightly mix of original electro beats, swirling chords and analogue synth riffery. It's a great end to Baldelli's best EP yet.

Kachiri (5:17)
Pink Ghost (6:06)
Volupia (5:22)
Kachiri (Tronik Youth mix) (5:43)
Review: Chug factor set to stun, two outright disco legends team up on Nein for three slabs of wriggling, giggling analogue fun and one remix. "Kachiri" is quite the head-turner, all psychedelic and densely weaved with meandering top lines that counter against each other. "Pink Ghost" is a much darker slice, conjuring up echoes of early Black Strobe with its detuned undertones and stately risers while "Volupia" rolls on a broken beat rhythm with sweeping pads and cool 808 clicks and whirrs. Tronik Youth takes care of closing duties with a deeper, darker take on "Kachiri". With the trippiness switched for drones and a ploughman kick drum, it's yet another gold star for the Nein Records boss.

Rusty (4:02)
Start The Engine (5:15)
Irradia (4:07)
Slightly Mad (4:31)
Review: In recent years, Daniel Baldelli's original productions have tended towards the funkier end of the cosmic disco spectrum. That's certainly what you get here, as the Afro-cosmic pioneer once again joins forces with regular studio partner Marco Dionigi. Of course, there are nod to the chugging, arpeggio-heavy world of Italo-disco - see the Balearic disco dreaminess of "Irradia" and cosmic funk-rock shuffle of "Slightly Mad" - but even these mind-altering journeys come blessed with crackling funk guitars and tasty Clavinet sounds. Our picks are opener "Rusty", a bassline-driven, funk-fuelled Idjut Boys style dub disco number, and the pleasingly percussive, flash-fried funk of "Start The Engine".

The Slope EP

Doctor Feelgood (4:42)
Slope (5:14)
Slope (Lay-Far upbeat version) (5:44)
Review: Mad Mats and Tooli's Local Talk is still going strong. The Stockholm label now taps In-Beat-Ween Music main man Alexander Lay Far, who appeared last year on the label with his Communication EP. The Slope sees him collaborate with the legendary Ashley Beedle of X-Press 2 and Darren Morris. First up is "Doctor Feelgood" with its '70s inspired production complete with funk guitar, swinging live drumming and an infectiously funky synth bass. The Slope" is a more downbeat affair for chill out moments, a deep soul funk number with swirling Rhodes, dreamy xylophones and rich analogue strings drawing comparisons to Roy Ayers RAMP project. "Lay Far's Upbeat Version" does exactly what it does on the cover, injecting a funky breakbeat into said track, making it more dancefloor friendly but still retaining all its soulful glory.

Biesmans - "All Day, Every Day" (4:19)
Review: Biesmans' contribution to Watergate's mix series is made up entirely of his own previously unreleased productions, most of which were made in cahoots with friends and other like-minded artists. Because of this, the German label has decided to release two extensive vinyl samplers featuring the cream of these cuts. The Belgian indie-dance stalwart is in fine form throughout the first of these, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the new wave-tinged, cosmic-minded Shubostar hook-up 'Across The Universe', Zombies In Miami-sporting nu-disco throb-job 'Smooth Monday', breakbeat-driven neo-rave anthem 'All Day Every Day' and the EP-closing 'Away', where doP member Vandesande helps Biesmans channel the spirit of Vangelis' much-loved Bladerunner soundtrack.

Bijou - "Twilight"
De Pin Up Club - "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep"
Peet Need - "Here Comes The Arps"
Impresa Gottardo - "Trafori"
Review: Otto Kraanen's Bordello A Parigi label are on a roll right now, with no less than ten records issued since the turn of the year! One of those was the inauguration of the Riviera Disco series, overseen by Riviera Disco Club selector Julien Tavernier, which got off to a fine internationally flavoured start earlier this month with contributions from Disco Sigaretta, Dilemma and Sauroid founder DJ Gio MC-505. Volume two looks to be just as exotic in sound and international in flavour with Belgian producer Bijou sharing space with cuts from Dutch pair De Pin Up Club and Peet Need and Impresa Gottardo, the new collaboration between Ajello's Philippe Taverio and Jean Paul Lazarre. In need of pumping italo and synth heavy disco? This 12" will satisfy those cravings and then some.

Let's Start To Dance Again (7:37)
Let's Start To Dance (part II) (6:41)
Review: Bohannon's biggest dancefloor hit, 'Let's Start II Dance Again', has been remixed umpteen times over the years, with several reworks of the slamming disco-funk classic released in the early-to-mid-1980s. Here it gets another new lease of life as part of Unidisc's 40th anniversary celebrations, with disco remix maestro Dimitri From Paris at the controls. The Frenchman delivers two tasteful, club-ready tweaks: an 'Extended Remix' that wisely utilises all of the familiar elements of Bohannon's original, while subtly beefing up the beats and adding a few drops and breakdowns, and an even longer, more dubbed-out 'Super Disco Blend' revision. Over on the flip there's a chance to enjoy Bohannon's original version and the raw and heavy 'Part 2' mix from 1981 album Alive.

Review: Super Spicy Records continues its run with great releases, with this second instalment of the Super Spicy Recipe proving a great compilation with big names of the disco scene rubbing shoulders with some super talented newcomers. On A1, we have Boogietraxx and Monsieur Van Pratt teaming up for the fantastic 'Sigueme', that brings a Latin flavour to the table, followed on A2 by Mexican disco master Hotmood and Italian star Gledd combining their superpowers to bring the maximum jazz spice to the recipe via 'I've Got Jazz'. Review: Lincolnshire's Craig Bratley (Tsuba/Nein Records/Instruments Of Rapture) is back on his own Magic Feet imprint with a bit of help from Danielle Moore on vocals for "Play The Game", a slow burning and noirish EBM grinder that will appeal to fans of recent Comeme or Correspondant style retrovert tendencies. There's also some killer remixes on offer: Heretic's slamming remix is reminiscent of early 90s rave aesthetics while the don that is Andrew Weatherall steps up to deliver a woozy lo-slung disco rendition which is absolutely brilliant as always.

Review: Disco Mind Records impressed everyone with its first EP and now it deals with the pressure of coming back with a second in fine fashion. This one is perfect for warm days and summer nights as it offers four high-impact and gloriously feel-good Brazilian and disco edits all pulled off to perfection. New young talent Brother Julian kicks off with a peak time and groovy burner, then disco don Romand Truth goes a little more deep and smooth with his seductive sound. Review: Expansion's offshoot label is back with a second release and for the occasion have put together a special eco vinyl 10" here that is strictly limited to just 100 copies and is fully deserving of that treatment: Tom Browne Feat. Carol Woods combined to great effect in the 80s on this soul classic that now gets a first-ever single release. Nnatn - "Magia Du Samba" (7:01)
Review: Some V/As are dubious in their length, seeming to span both EP and mini-compilation length in equal measure, but not this one, which definitely seems to know what it's about. Moiss Music are no stranger to this format, here presenting their second vinyl release 'Watermelon Jam' after the first EP-length four tracker, 'Strawberry Jam'. Nu-disco, funk and house is the name of the game once again, and the tone is set by C Da Afro's 'That Funky Horn' via sample-filtering soul and raucous trumpets. The vocal cuts on this record are among its highlights; Disco Endeavours' 'So High' carries Brandy-esque chirps along a funking house backdrop, while the best of the bunch - 'Feelin's Mutual' by Pookie Knights - channels Carmen or Sylvester in its syrupy refrains and jet-set arps. Even a samba house bit closes it off - a swell all-rounder.

Hamburg's Cassara ignite the moving fusion with the filtered French touch jacker "Lady Leopard". Newcomer Darko Kustura follows with a silky, soulful disco debut before Cassara jumps back on the decks with another chugging house affair. This time nodding towards the MFF/Classic style of tightly plucked Chi-minded house grooves. Comeback (instrumental)
Review: Bristol's premier bastion of boogie inflected house music continues unabated with this release from central label figure Christophe. Bringing in the vocals of Danielle Moore, "Comeback" is a refreshing departure from the sample ripping techniques most use and in the process of originality brings a curious Detroit romanticism into the 80s electro funk context. Casino Times switch up into a more straight-up deep house groove that chugs away dutifully, while Christophe brings his regular cohort Lukas on board for a 'mastermix' that further builds on the Detroit tones with a serious Inner City flavoured version. The instrumental of the original rounds the package off nicely with a greater focus on those dirty funk elements of yesteryear that never grow old.

Review: This latest is a reissue of a Congress Productions EP featuring their seminal 'Neptune'. The much-sampled early 80s jazz-funk classic comes in original form next to two unreleased cuts. The first is a rare boogie cut 'Live It Up' that has been extended for more dancefloor heft having first been dropped under the D'aile' alias as a B-side. They have cooked up a selection of versions of 'Rosso Carnale' which, we understand, lyrically touches on the colour red and the gentle carnal forces of nature sung in Italian. Open Up Your Mind (instrumental)
Review: Newly transplanted to Australia, Greenskeeper don James Curd demonstrates he's lost none of his knack for crafting deliciously danceable electro funk grooves with his latest offering on Permanent Vacation. "Open Up Your Mind" is the first of hopefully many collaborations with vocalist Devin Byrnes, whose spoken word delivery is the perfect foil for a vertical glam house throb from Curd. There's a tongue in cheek menace to the darkly lysergic melodies that you'd expect from Curd, but it's matched by an inherent infectiousness. This is probably his best work since the ubiquitous DFA single a few years ago, and there's even an instro version for those who prefer their house music sans chatter.

Review: Such are Felix Dickinson's disco credentials he's one of the lucky ones along with Harvey who's seen Larry Levan play records on a number of occasions, but the mere mention of his name is likely to elicit blank stares with the current generation of vinyl buying public. This is despite a production career that stretches over two decades under a multiplicity of aliases. However, Dickinson's name seems to be cropping up in all the right places at the moment with a recent remix and edit on DFA and Rush Hour respectively as well as mention of something special for Claremont 56. Dickinson adds to this momentum on this D Bastedos twelve which dubs out the Star Wars rap on the A Side into a brilliantly spinal slo mo house chugger. Peep the other side for a much more energetic race through power disco of the campest order!

4 Love (Dylan's re-edit)
Number Magical (Mel & Nico's re-edit in dub)
Review: What a back to back classic! Aim to the dancefloor re-edit of two disco/funk stormers. On the A side is a huge DJ Baldelli/DJ Harvey (and anyone with two ears in good working condition) classic when italodisco meets proper big room appeal. One of these tracks you can't not dance to, hands in the air, and smile on your face. This re-edit, by French master Dylan, has been around on CD for some time and championed to death with the like of Dimitri From Paris. The B side is a lesser known disco groover, from one of the most famous 70s kings of funk and jazz. This time by Mel & Nico, cuts out the original voices to get straight to the core of the dub part for total, uncompromising, dancefloor effect. Heavy heavy heavy.

You Did It
Longer
Review: D Classics strikes back with new re-edits of 3 hard-to-find dancefloor stormers from the likes of Mel & Nico's re-edit stable. Retouched from the original (promo only) 12" version, the A-side brings you a hands in the air disco-soul jewel. All ingredients are here for your listening and dancing pleasure, heavy bassline, strings ensemble that's gonna melt you down, vocal to die for. Think Tom Moulton, Larry Levan, FK 2. More classics on the B side - first track is a lesser-known version of Stretch's huge classic, slightly retouched, but still keeping the original vibe alive, from the south African lady's version (and what a vibe it is - huge respect due). To finish on a high, the last track is an all -time fave.

Me & My Fellas - "1000 Laser Gun"
Review: The Foot & Mouth crew return with another 12" of highly impressive discoid edits. First up D-Sound drops "Our World", a fantastic reshape of Hall & Oates, while "Groove Me Your Dove" by Me & My Fellas rounds off the A Side with some languid disco funk. B Side opener "For That" - another lovely Hall & Oates remake - shimmers beneath tropical percussion, and stands out as Juno's EP's highlight. The old school funk bassline, soulful vocals and carefree piano on "1000 Laser Gun" round off a seriously dope 12".

Review: D'Stephanie, the cutting edge sound girl and international nightlife icon, releases "Shake It Down". It features MC Sjen Anoubis, a young and talented unknown emcee who spreads the message right from the soul with an old school vibe, reminding us of the vocal talents of Frankie Knuckles or the Jungle Brothers. This is a top Format release.

Review: Legofunk's back with more of their special dance floor heaters, this time from the collaborative team of Da Lukas and Massimiliano Troiani. 'Ritmo Nera' kicks off with some buoyant drums and sliding hi hats, international vocals and clattering percussion that will install bring tropical vibes to any party. '127 Sport Arancione' is another fulsome funk joint with elastic bass and happy synths overflowing with joy. 'Panda Bianca' closes down with more funk heavy house grooves and a firey vocal is paired with stomping kicks.

In The Heat Of The Night (Jimpster Stretchdit)
Review: In a move that brings something new to the table in the era of quick and easy reissues, Freerange have decided to commission a slab of re-edits of classic 1990 house burner "In The Heat Of The Night", with a pleasingly respectful range of results. The Black Madonna gets busy with the acid lines and some enthusiastic chopping of the vocal, also knowing when to pull back on the slicing and dicing and let it roll out. Adjowa brings a dubbier sensibility to the track with a heavy leaning on the drums and some extra synth embellishments to accentuate the psychedelic qualities in the track, before Jimpster takes a no-nonsense approach to his own "Stretchdit".

Review: Daddario proves he is the daddio with a new electro excursion on the fledgling Ragoo label. Rather than all out cosmic dance floor assaults, this is electro steep in funk and boogie from the off. 'Shift' is a playful one with stiff melodies and lush chords while 'Boogie Night' (feat JZP) is just that. 'Space Lou' has a feel good disco tinge to the hip swinging clasp and jazzy keys and after an Astratto Fool mix that slows 'Boogie Night' down to a soulful slow dance the flipside brings dazzling electro-disco and downbeat analogue grooves that seduce and tease. The Mechanical Man remix of 'Brazillionaire' might just steal the show at the end.

The Intergalactic Lover (3:04)
The Club (3:05)
Review: As one Discogs member correctly states, Central Processing Unit is the "...most consistent label of the last couple of years". We couldn't agree more and, each time we have a gander at its now extensive catalogue, we cannot believe that it has been active only since 2012. Since then, the imprint has brought us EPs of all sorts, by both established names like DMX Krew or newer, younger talent like Microlith, Morphology or Plant43. Newcomer Daddy Long Legs bursts through the place with a majestic, electro-fuelled anthem in "The Intergalactic Lover", something of an ode to the likes of The Egyptian Lover, and the disco-friendly, head-jerker called "The Club", a wonderfully funky boogie monster with a rough techno beat. BAD.

Review: Hit makes of the 20th and 21st Century don't come much bigger or more accomplished than French electronic innovators Daft Punk and irresistible hook-writing machine Pharrell Williams. When they got together to make music it was always going to give rise to monster hits and so it proved. Whoever you are, 'Get Lucky' cannot fail to get you singing along and swinging those hips. The Chic-style bass riffs, the smooth and catchy vocal from Williams and the effortless groove are all timeless. That one is backed with 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger' another Daft Punk classic from their earlier period but that is no less potent today.
