Life's Better With Disco
Cat: ZEDD 12324. Rel: 09 Nov 21
Firefly - "Love Is Gunna Be On Your Side" (Dave Lee Love Emergency mix) (9:42)
Ruffneck - "The Power - The Rhythm" (Backroom Productions Feel The music mix) (5:17)
Johnny Dynell - "Rhythm Of Love" (Larry Levan Garage dub) (5:33)
Doug Willis - "Doug's Disco Theme" (Doug Disco mix) (7:18)
Review: In its full digital form, Z Records' excellent Life's Better With Disco Comp is an epic 37 tracks deep. Naturally there aren't that many cuts on this sampler 12", but the four on show are undoubtedly amongst the set's many highlights. Boss man Dave Lee kicks things off via a superb classic disco-meets-nu-disco revision of Firefly's 'Love Is Gunna Be On Your Side', before there's a chance to cop an obscure Backroom Productions rework of their early proto-house/garage-house gem (as Ruffneck), 'The Power - The Rhythm'. The mid-'80s fun continues on Larry Levan's vintage remix of Jonny Dynell's 'Rhythm of Love' - a killer fusion of dubbed-out synths and drums and Konk style Latin percussion - while Doug Willis' 'Doug's Disco Theme' is a classic disco-house number from Lee under one of his many alternative aliases.

Rainer Truby & Corrado Bucci presents Truccy - "Closer" (6:34)
Review: From Kon's forthcoming compilation on BBE entitled Kon & The Gang, this 12? sampler features two cuts taken from the LP and an exclusive remix from Boston producer and mix engineer Caserta, namely "Timeless" (Caserta mix)" a tasty serving of super deep and low slung disco goodness. A more functional edit for DJ use follows on "Timeless" (remix - Caserta mix)". On the flip Truccy (better known as Compost's Rainer Truby and Corrado Bucci) present "Closer", a gorgeous slo-mo house jam with a rolling groove fetauring all the good stuff: swirling Rhodes keys, groovy congas and hypnotic vox.

Lay Far - "Never Ever Edit" (4:53)
Admin - "Moon Trippin'" (6:28)
Rahaan - "Gonna Get Ya" (5:55)
Delfonic - "Let's Dance The Spank" (5:41)
Review: Funkyjaws Music launches a new edits series here with four absolute dons of the form on one vital 12". It's Lay Far that kicks off with 'Never Ever Edit' which is all horn-led excitement and upbeat disco claps and kicks before Admin's 'Moon Trippin' takes a more slow and soulful approach. When it comes to edits few are more essential than Chicago's Rahaan who kicks off the B-side with 'Gonna Get Ya', a leggy funk number infused with cosmic synth rays and warm piano chords. Delfonic shuts down with the loose percussive jumbles and jazzy vibes of 'Let's Dance The Spank'. A fine start to the series with volume two already in the works.

Backroom Productions - "Classic Vibe" (Dave Lee remix) (6:19)
Raquel Rodriguez - "Undone" (Dave Lee's Disco Blend) (6:29)
Review: Time to Attack the Dancefloor once more as we supply some heavy Disco & House weaponry. Featuring the brand new remix of Opolopo's storming 'Stroke my Disco' by dutch funkateers Fouk who double down on the Piano and Clav workouts for the peak time. Exclusive new material from Wipe The Needle who's 'Skyscrapers' track is a modern Jazz-Funk masterpiece, heavy on the flute and soulful bass. On the flip Dave Lee takes it back to '97 with his rework of Backroom Productions 'Classic Vibe' which sees him flex his house-ier muscles, re-arranging the classic elements and adding extra keys to this much loved underground tune. Finishing off the EP is Dave's remix of nu-soul diva Raquel Rodriguez, where he crafts Raquel's dynamic vocal delivery over chunky Disco drumming & soulful synths before letting loose into Roy Ayers-esque vibes finale!

Review: Since 2015, Tel Aviv twosome Rabo & Snob has been delivering annual releases on re-edit stable Whiskey Disco. Here they make the transfer to one of Sleazy McQueen's other imprints, Lovedancing, with some tasty original productions. "Yawumna", featuring Somma Idrisu, effortlessly underpins jangly acoustic guitars and African vocals with a metronomic nu-disco groove, while "Afia", featuring vocalist Azizaa, sounds like an unlikely fusion of Afrobeat and Adonis's "No Way Back". Art of Tones provides an organ-laden, sunshine-soaked Afro-house revision of "Yawumna", while Jacques Renault provides a suitably chunky dub of "Ifa" for those late night moments.

I Feel Like Going On
Can't Get Enough
Review: Michigan-via-Ohio gospel group Rance Allen have been going for decades, and thanks to Expansion Records, two of their best known tunes now have a chance at relistenership. 'I Feel Like Going' on barely saw a resurfacing on YouTube, but just one listen and we're sure... this is a shockingly important slice of wax, with slapping electronic disco-soul production embedding sax, viola and castanets in what ought to be considered a criminally undersought pair of dance opals. A modern soul masterclass.

Be What You Want Be (4:40)
Papa "Doo" (5:16)

Review: REPRESS ALERT: As far as collaborative delights go, this really takes the cake. Miami boogie wildcard Noel Williams, aka King Sporty, throwing it down heavy with legendary Jamaican reggae axe man Ernest Ranglin - as you might expect, the results are incendiary. 'Soft Touch' has a hint of the cosmic about it as it romps through insanely catchy chorus chants, stirring brass stabs and Ranglin's sweet licks. 'Keep On Dancing' has a more uptempo feel, 'In The Rain' slips into a laid back reggae skank and 'Be What You Want To Be' turns the vintage disco heat back up. Throughout this wonderful mini LP, the duo switch between each other's strengths and bring out the best in each other, like all good collaborations should.

Let Me Down Easy (long version) (4:39)
Review: If you love your disco sweet, soulful and string-drenched, you really need a copy of Rare Pleasure's 1976 debut single, 'Let Me Down Easy', in your life. This reissue from South Street Disco is therefore essential to all those who've not snagged an original copy. It features both the seven-inch and 12-inch mixes (A and B respectively); both feature deliciously emotional female lead vocals, a killer disco groove, wah-wah style funk guitar licks, sumptuous instrumentation and a jangling piano riff that was later used by David Morales on his '90s house anthem 'Needin' U'. It's a breathtakingly brilliant disco record, so don't sleep on this "45" reissue.

Review: A's and Bees is a new label with a slightly different mission - as well as offering up heavyweight 12" pressings packed with double sided delights, the label also promises to donate 50% of the profits from every wax to the British Beekeepers Association. They kick off with a bro one, too - it is a much needed reissue of Rare Pleasure's 'Superfine Feeling', which was only pressed din small quantities and now fetches over L400 quid on second hand sites. The 1977 soul drenched disco number brings real joy with its wind and strong stabs, strident beats and scorching vocals.

Review: Philadelphia International Records was of course a goldmine for irresistible soul sounds. One of the main men responsible for that was the legend Lou Rawls. This lovely new 12" brings together a couple of his signature sounds with subtle remix work by Mike Maurro. You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine' and 'See You When I Git There' have been taken from the original master tapes and given some modern dance floor touches to make them essential all over again. Bada-Bongo (4:33)
Review: More from the mysterious Ron's Reworks series, which appears (though it has never been confirmed) to have been launched in tribute to late, great Chicago DJ Ron Hardy. The shadowy scalpel fiend (or fiends) behind the series begins volume three with "Revelation", a sparkling rearrangement of a life-affirming, piano-laden number that sits somewhere between jazz-funk, Latin jazz, spiritual jazz and disco. It is, beyond a shadow of doubt, one of the most positive tracks you'll hear all month. Elsewhere, "Games You Playing" is a synth-sporting slab of disco-funk heaviness, and "Bada Bongo" a percussive, break-driven, bongo-laden workout guaranteed to get limbs moving on the dancefloor.

Review: Ron's Reworks is a mysterious new edit label that deals in tweaking disco gems. Whether Ron is the name of the edit artist, or a nod to the fact these tunes might have been played Ron Hardy, we don't know, but we do know they are worth having: Gilles Peterson played the lush soul grooves of "Flight Of The Eisenberg" on his 6 Music show which should be all the support you need to know about, while "Heads" is a more deep cut of late night funk with playful riffs and a gorgeous vocal sample next to jazzy Rhodes keys. "The Jubes" ends things with a heartwarming gospel vocal from beautiful outfit The Supreme Jubilees that will leave you feeling warm inside.

The Cull (3:24)
Review: Ron's Reworks, a series of scalpel jobs and lightly beefed-up reworks from Crazy P co-founder Jim Baron AKA Ron Basejam, has now reached its fourth volume. Predictably, the included material is every bit as well-crafted as its' similarly inclined predecessors. The standout is undoubtedly A-side 'They Speak Colour', a loopy, soft-focus disco-house jam whose relentless grooves, synthesizer splashes and simmering orchestration make it sound like Soundstream after a bong full of Marijuana smoke and several disco biscuits. Elsewhere, 'The City' is a canny revision of an unusual disco-boogie number that builds through sections of drums and cut-up, scat style vocals before finally flourishing late on, while 'The Cull' is a deep and meandering head-nodder tailor-made for warm-up sets and sit-down bar gigs.

Review: 'Free Your Mind' is a rare and sought-after funk single from 1979, originally released on the obscure Gem City label. Though this debut was their only proper release, Record Player were a humungous supergroup from Dayton, Ohio, with over fifteen members exiting and entering their collective revolving door over the course of their active period. It's clear that the single's first reissue back in 2006 (via Soul Cal) wasn't sufficient for the most avid diggers out there, so now Fraternity/Und Brother team up again for round two, again backing up the song with the sultry wish-fulfiller 'Your Fantasy'.

Review: Red Greg, on Moton, delivers a trio of edits of obscure cuts from his seemingly endless record collection. Ten-minute A-side "Movin" is an undulating disco treat built around a killer bassline, twinkling melodies, punchy orchestration and one hell of a female vocal. On the flip you'll find the jaunty, horn-heavy disco-funk bump of "Desire", a superb rework of a barely known, bilingual gem, and the spiraling Caribbean disco-funk insanity that is peak-time workout/synthesizer wig-out "Trinidad Duke". All three edits have been "secret weapons" for the dusty-fingered DJ for some time, and can now be yours for less than nine English pounds. What's not to like?

Can't Fake The Feeling (12" instrumental mix) (5:25)
Review: Long-serving soulful house and jazz-funk band Reel Peeple has decided to inaugurate a new series of disco and boogie covers. On the A-side of this first EP they serve up vocal and instrumental covers of Evelyn 'Champagne' King electrofunk classic "I'm In Love". Although these are largely reverentially faithful to the King's version (even down to the synthesizer settings), they also feel a little more loose and groovy - thanks in no small part to the band's drummer. On the flipside they opt for a more traditional disco sound on their versions of Geraldine Hunt's "Can't Fake This Feeling". Aside from the additional of some synth strings and warm Rhodes chords, they too are pleasingly faithful to their source material.

Paint A Picture now serve up a first ever fully remastered and licensed reissue of the superb 7". An original will cost you upwards of L200 if you can find it so this is welcome indeed. Review: Although the Australian outfit Regime roots are in revivalist funk, 'Never Gonna Stop' sees them turn their hands to warm, loved-up and sun-kissed soul of the kind that was once all the rage in the mid 1970s. The grooves are toasty, the male and female lead vocals effortlessly soulful, and the instrumental touches - think languid jazz guitar solos, sweeping strings and lazy, trumpet-heavy horn arrangements - little less than superb. Flipside 'Deuzy Vibe', a P-funk flavoured, turn-of-the-80s boogie-soul style affair, is almost as good. There aren't that many of these -vinyl 45s around, so buy now to avoid disappointment.

Review: Last time out, the mystery re-editors and remixers behind the RESPECT series turned their attention to cuts from Gil Scott-Heron and - fittingly given the banner under which they release - Aretha Franklin. Here they deliver versions of tracks from two more greats, with the aim being heavier, funkier takes that work a little better on house dancefloors. On the A-side they tackle what sounds like a disco-era Chaka Khan classic, beefing up the beats while leaving much of the song above in-tact. Over on the flip they successful tamper with Wham's 'Everything She Wants', adding a rolling house beat, while emphasising the original's killer synth bassline and dubbing out some of the vocals and instrumentation.

Review: Rhyze was a legendary New York based funk, soul and R&B band and they put out a classic album Just How Sweet Is Your Love on the SAM Records label back in the 80s. One of the little known but killer cuts from it is 'Do Your Dance.' It has driving horns over driving drums, with a slick bassline weaving in and out from front to back. This 12" from Ri Edito is a second volume from the in-house production team and it's a steamy one. 'Al Dancing' is full of sensuous whispered vocals and yacht rock cool, then 'Imprevedibile' rides another sunny beat with soaring strings. 'La Rosa' then keeps it funky and lavish thanks to more synth strings and gentle keys. 'Vaiaccaga' closes out with a weird vocal that is heavily filtered and sounds multi-lingual.

The label is always working on a wealth of different projects it seems and this month drops a couple of very tasty - as per usual - 7"s. Rivage was a leading band in the 70s modern soul scene and one long loved by the Athens label head. He put out a first-ever reissue of their Sit-in On It LP last year and now serves up some of the singles from it, namely the flute-led joy of 'Strung Out On Your Love' and 'All My Love For You,' a comforting soul tune with swirling grooves and classic falsetto vocals. There are two such 7"s out this month, and this one opens on 'I Need You Baby.' The simple title is the mona vocal hook of this lush and lux disco swirling, with soul to dare. And that's what Marc Roberts does and then some here with four poolside classics. They follow on from Austin Ato's smasher for the label's first release in fine style with opener 'Jogging Back 2 U' full of bendy bass and heart-wrenching vocals. Review: London producer Scott Ferguson is the man behind the Robot84 alias. He has a love for 80s gear that very much defines the sounds he makes, from proto-house to darker disco. His self-titled label is back with more of that good stuff here as he faces off with The Raff for 'Get It Right Next Time'. This one has a creeping groove and warm chord sequences that tease and please beneath sweeping Balearic synths and celebratory melodic sequences that build to a crescendo. The drums get the hips swinging and the sprinkling of cosmic magic finishes it off in style making it a perfect cut for open-air dancing by the beach.

Further proof of his dusty-fingered, scalpel-wielding genius can be found on this Orange Tree Edits outing. Check first the rubbery, off-kilter '80s electro-flex of "Kat-Woman Do", before admiring the Mascara-sporting, New Romantic style synth-pop goodness of "Bitter Juice". Review: New York house royalty Ralphi Rosario has got scores of classics in his back catalogue, and now Groovin have cherry-picked a couple that are more than worthy of a scrub up and repress. The record leads with 'An Instrumental Need', an absolute benchmark of piano house perfection which will instantly take a party to a truly positive place, and that's even before the vibes solo comes twinkling into earshot. On the B-side is 1997 stomper 'Take Me Up', which plays to Rosario's strength in whipping up a frenzy with some seriously stripped back disco heat and an anthemic vocal from Donna Blakely.

Review: Orange Tree Edits are back once again with more of that super fruity dance floor juiciness. Jimmy Rouge is the man at the controls this time and he wastes no time in heading off to the stars with the cosmic disco workout that is 'Bay Leaf' and its stiff retro arps. 'Rounders' sinks into a more laid-back vibe, with late night chords and gently tumbling drum breaks perfect for seaside dancing. 'Night Train' is a real cosmic chugger with spangled synths spiraling round the mix and 'Fever Dream' then locks you into a lush late-night reverie with lo-fi boogie bass.

Everybody Loves The Sunshine (3:51)

Gotta Find A Lover (11:00)
Review: Who doesn't know this classic? Sampled by almost every hip-hop artist under the sun, and remixed many-a-time even by electronic artists and covers vultures, 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' is Roy Ayers' least deniable classic, often placed firmly in many 'greatest songs of all time' lists. In theme and sound, it is pure summer, capturing Ayers at his creative peak while in the company of his employ band, the Ubiquity. Peaking strings, lackadaisical melodies, and references to 'bees and things and flowers' paints an almost dizzyingly high-as-a-kite mood, as if Ayers wrote the song while under the effect of heatstroke. Whatever overtook him, it worked. Once more, the original releaser Polydor reminds us of the song's impact.

Funky Way To Treat Me (4:30)
Review: The Roz Ryan studio real reissue series hits a third and final instalment here. This one is another superb piece of previously unissued 2 step soul that will pirouette its way into your heart. It was discovered in 1980 and produced by the mighty Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey. First up is 'Love Changes' which was also covered by O.C Smith and is a slow and sultry number with buttery but poignant lyrics. Flip it over for the more upbeat, driving and dancefloor ready number that is 'Funky Way To Treat Me' with a production that heightens all the lush disco elements.

Keep Shining (4:14)
Put Love Back (3:33)
Review: Super Disco Edits decision to focus on releasing previously unissued gems from the disco era has resulted in a string of essential 7" singles. Predictably, this is another must-have. Vocalist and actress Roz Ryan recorded them with producers Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore in 1980, during a spell in Broadway musical Ain't Misbehavin'. They were destined for a six-track album that was sadly never released. A-side "Keep Shining" is a killer chunk of sing-along jazz-funk/disco/boogie fusion, full of sprightly P-funk synths and punchy horns. Flipside "Put Love Back", on the other hand, is a slow burning delight: a wonderful chunk of boogie-era late night soul shot through with heartbroken emotion. Both tracks are brilliant, in other words.

Somehow (Make Way) (4:55)
Review: On Discs Of Fun & Love's fourth release, the crate-digging imprint has dipped its toes into the wonderful world of gospel for the very first time. The songs are taken from Rubenstein "Ruby" McClure's notoriously hard to find sole solo album, "Rubenstein", and their reissue is sadly given extra weight by the recent news that "Mother" McClure passed away in July. A-side "Joy" more than lives up to its' title, offering an uplifting slab of gospel-soul perfection topped off with a sublime lead vocal from McClure. Bandleader Fletcher Washington handles lead vocals on the soulful brilliance of gospel-blues flipside "Somehow (Make a Way)", a track that's every bit as essential as the "A".

Review: Bologna-based Sam Ruffillo is undoubtedly a rising star. What's most impressive about his work is his seemingly innate ability to blend elements of deep house (both Italian and American) and US garage with nods to jazz-funk, broken beat, soul and boogie. His latest EP for Toy Tonics is another exceptional collection of cuts. There are three Ruffillo originals on show: the slick soul vocals, boogie bass and kaleidoscopic house colour of 'Just Fine' and the electrofunk-meets-Italo-disco excellence of 'Mind & Soul (Italo Version)'. Elsewhere, Ash Lauryn turns unreleased cut 'Don't Think Twice' into a subtly disco-tinged deep house body-warmer, while Art of Tones delivers two passes on 'Mind & Soul' - a glistening, sun-bright vocal version that sounds like a classic Dave Lee production, and an equally as impressive, vocal-free Dub Mix.
