Cat: D3E 018LTD. Rel: 06 Nov 23

Deep House
AsTreJinkins - "Terror" (5:06)
New Digital Fidelity - "TOI00e" (3:20)
Moroka - "Skidly" (5:19)
Byron The Aquarius - "Tua Su Ra" (6:04)
Nico Lahs - "It's Spelled BARI" (6:23)
Review: French label D3 - which when pronounced in French sounds like their word for Detroit - is a decade old and celebrates the milestone with a special three-part EP series. As has always been the case over that 10 year period, the sounds it serves up are deep and housey. This various artists affair kicks off with AsTreJinkins' slow and propulsive 'Terror' before some nice airy and live sounding broken beats from New Digital Fidelity. Moroka picks up the pace with some hi-tek soul that sounds straight from the Motor City and Byron The Aquarius shows off his mastery of the keys again with a dreamy deep cut 'Tua Su Ra'. Nico Lahs shuts down with a heavyweight beatdown in the form of 'It's Spelled BARI.'

Alex Attias & Justin Chapman & Hajime Yochizawa - "The Message (For You)" (10:00)
Alex Attias & Mark De Clive Lowe - "The Waiting Game" (7:57)
Review: Since -re-establishing his early noughties Visions imprint in 2017, Swiss scene stalwart Alex Attias has delivered some of his most impressive and musically dexterous material. He's at it again here on a two-tracker that showcases his love of studio collaboration. Our pick of the pair is exuberant, life-affirming A-side "The Message (For You)", a sublime slab of loose-limbed Latin house soulfulness featuring vocals from Justin Chapman and keys-work from Japanese artist Hajime Yochizawa. Attias' old pal Mark De Clive-Lowe lends a hand of equally positive and sparkling flipside "The Waiting Game", adding all manner of jazz-funk inspired sound synths to a fine, rubbery deep house workout.

Life Recorder - "Eternal Tones" (7:11)
June Jazzin - "Sikhanyiso" (7:48)
Mark E - "Tracer" (5:43)
Review: Swiss label Visions Recordings (formarly known as Visions Inc) returns with The Evolution: Phase Four. On the A side, you've got label chief Alex Attias who appears with the emotive nu-jazz journey 'Magical Feeling' (feat Sohan Wilson) followed by Life Recorder who gets some real proper house vibes happening on 'Eternal Tones 'reaching near spiritual moments. Over on the flip, June Jazzin gets those early noughties UK vibes (think Bugz In The Attic, Kaidi Tatham et al) in effect on 'Sikhanyiso' and Mark E is in fine form as always on the deep contemplation of 'Tracer'.

Review: The late and great Avicii is notably honoured on this four-track sampler vinyl from Vicious Recordings, pledging the delivery of garagey summer house versions of monumental hits. 'My Feelings For You', with all its stellar vocal sample work, gets a stunning dub house rework from Mark Knight, while further soulful house and Detroit tech cuts follow from Joshwa, Hotmood and JARC. An impressive, rhythmatic slice of wax from the rabid canines over at Vicious.

Review: For anyone who missed out on the RSD 3LP release from Diggin' Deep Disco, cast your frustration aside as the label have elected to reissue that hefty selection of edits over three 12" samplers. Part One here - pressed on yellow vinyl no less - scopes out the contributions from Cassara, Loz Goddard, Vinyl Addicted and Mystep. Of the four it is still the latter's subtle Moodymannisms on the twilight house strut of "Get Over" that makes the biggest impression.

Review: Motor City label Upstairs Asylum celebrates its roots in 313 with this new Dance Detroit EP featuring a wealth of American house innovators. First up, Reggie Dokes and Steve Crawford join forces on 'Fear Of Failure', a house track steeped in Detroit soul. Marvin Prather's 'Until' follows on with his stylish and soul-drenched grooves. Steve Crawford then goes it alone and turns up the drums on his potent 'Let You Go' (feat Tony B) and then get deeply emotional on 'Love Is Here' this time with help from featured artist Anthony Poteat. Prather and then label regular and Atlanta man Reggie Dokes closes down with his 'Not Ready.'

Fabio Santanna - "Melo Da Cuica" (2:58)
The Robinson - "Song 1" (6:16)
Review: The cultured folks at Ten Lovers Music have put together a best of collection on this new various artists 12" and what a joy it is too. Cumulative Collective pome with the joyous and life-affirming jazz sounds of shuffling house delight 'AskaFara'. Takahiro Fuchigami's 'Strange Acquaintance' floats through the cosmos on jittery melodic details with crisp percussion and warming Rhodes chords. Flip it over and you get Melchior Sultana bringing the sunshine that he is so well known for to 'The Playground', the sumptuous synth-led, brass embellished Latin funk of Fabio Santanna's 'Melo Da Cuica' and The Robinson closing things down with the more zippy and broken beat energy of 'Song 1', featuring some truly virtuosic piano soloing.

Review: Marcellus Pittman and James Curd go head-to-head on this new collaborative split, hearing two tracks from the Chi-troit musicians and their ability to fuse each other's approaches to minimal house. 'Shafty Riptide' has in it the sonic equivalent of lapping waves; 'chained chords inhale and exhale against the beats, while farty arps bring up the bottom end. 'Corners' takes on a jazzier and folktronickier mood, with odd timings urging on a much more subdued soundscape.

Alkalino - "Rio" (Alkalino rework) (5:30)
Gledd - "Sere Yo" (5:31)
Review: Adeen Records returns with a superb EP that blends a classic with three new and fresh unreleased tracks. Deep house don Chez Damier's Panorama Bar Remix kicks off and is a a 2021 standout with a killer baseline and Spanish guitar that brings some sunny soul and makes for some top level house grooves. Makez then shines with 'Rocket Music' which has a chunky low end and glistening, golden piano chords making it a late night favourite. On the B-side, Adeen regular Alkalino delivers a tropical-infused edit for the peak time and Gledd closes with a classy cut 'Sere Yo' that is all about the drums. Lovely stuff.

Cormac Fulton - "Loungeware" (feat Floor Polder) (6:45)
Mike Perras - "Soulluos" (6:32)
Future Jazz Ensemble - "Over The Rainbow" (4:05)
Takahiro Fuchigami - "Outer Heaven" (5:35)
Review: Stefano De Santis kicks off Ten Lovers' new 'Best Of Various' release with 'Murk'; as the name suggests, this is indeed a dark workout from Rome's finest. The tone is set thereout for a thoroughly varied V/A, blending every curious hallmark from jazzdance, G-funk, Chicago house and progressive. The opener is a muted but no less expansive start, establishing the broken, one-beat-eliding, live-drummy mood that is then heard throughout. Batavia Collective's 'Rearview' thematically harks after an unconscious joy, considering what can only be implied, not stated, by way of a gorgeous, what sounds to be largely live, modal synth squeezer on which the slowdown is the real highlight. Future Jazz Ensemble's 'Over The Rainbow' is by far the most challenging, blurring any woulda-been established lines popularly splitting 'live' and 'electronic' with a reverb-drenched generative fill workout, while closer 'Outer Heaven' from Takahiro Fuchigami, hailing from Fukuoka, rounds things off on a note of Hancockian jive.

Caruso - "Chiariello" (4:18)
Review: Ten Lovers Music once again leads from the front when it comes to rich house grooves. This one features four different artists, starting with Stefano de Santis and his golden 'Broken Fusion' which is just that - cosmic synth lines singing loud and proud over fluttering snares and broken drums. Melchior Sultana's 'Slap' has a chunky US garage feel with warped chords smeared up top and then Jose Rico comes through with two gems - 'Silence Sentences' is a pensive one with lingering piano notes having in the air above a supple groove, while 'Minimalism' is pure blissed out sunset house. Caruso brings some Latin and percussive flair to 'Chiariello' to round out.

Review: Robsoul Recordings has continue on the rich tradition of superb France deep hose for many years after the first wave of artists and labels came and went. This third edition of its Classic Sampler series is another joyous one that opens up with the jazzy loops and soul-drenched house grooves of Demuir's 'From Paris To Strasbourg'. Review: Maltese deep house dude Melchior Sultana becomes the latest addition to Jus-Ed's bulging list of collaborators, which also includes Levon Vincent, Fred P, Nina Kraviz, DJ Qu, Move D, Mr G, Lawrence and Son of Sound. The resultant jams are sweet, sticky and undeniably Moorish. Check, for example, the shuffling Afro-house beats, sumptuous electric piano solos, leisurely jazz guitars and spoken word vocals of "Choices", the piano and synth-bass driven breeziness of "Outside" and the classic deep house warmth of closing cut "Press It". "Now Scat", an ultra-deep, acid-flecked treat, is also top notch.

It's a classy deep house outing from the off with Meftah's 'Recognizing Strength In Healing' exploring subtle sound worlds with muted chords and gentle finger clicks. Review: Soiree Records lines up another seriously tasty release here from four on-form artists who all deserve your undivided attention. Motor City man 'Drivetrain' brings raw, granulated synth and muted acid to tough house drums. Aussie artist Jani Ho's 'Mono Charge' is panel-beating techno to sweep you off your feet, and Parisian Motomitsu then brings some heart and soul with a chord-drenched cosmic house exploration. It is then to American Owen Ni for the balmy, dreamy, spacious and lo-fi closer, 'Another Sunny Afternoon.' These are well-produced and original cuts each with a mood and mind of their own.

Mark De Clive-Lowe, Patrick Gibin & Tommaso Cappellato - "Apollo 3000" (MdCL Dreamscape Refix) (5:17)
Review: Last year, Mother Tongue Records released Madre Lingua, an album of all-star collaborations between broken beat and deep house musicians and producers helmed by Verona-based Brit Patrick Gibin. This 12" updates two of the tracks from the set, with Gibin once again to the fore. On side A, he joins forces with long-time friend and studio buddy Kaidi Tatham to remix EDB and Gary Superfly's 'Pressure'. Their tack is bouncy and synth-heavy, with spacey, out-there lead lines and intergalactic-sounding pads rising above a Maurice Fulton-as-Syclops style bassline and loose-limbed house drums. On the flip, Marc De Clive-Lowe remixes his own collaboration with Gibin and Tommasso Capelleto, 'Apollo', brilliantly joining the dots between spacey jazz-funk and ambient on a superb, beat-free 'Dreamscape' mix.

'Sun Circles' also makes the first release from new South Australia-based label Be Strong Be Free. Review: Following a string of alluring, melody-rich, digital-only EPs, Peace Symphonies makes its debut on wax with a multi-artist extravaganza. Gorge Hewek sets the tone with opener 'Peace Symphonies', a warming, sun-kissed slab of kaleidoscopic deep house/tech-house fusion that reminded us of some of the material released by the All Day I Dream label. Makebo's 'You' is a soft focus, dewy-eyed slab of sunrise-ready bliss underpinned by shuffling house drums, while 'Lazos' by Simon Vuarambon is a crunchy and groovy workout smothered in relaxed jazz piano solos and synth strings. Perhaps best of all though is the gorgeously grandiose, life-affirming dancefloor colour that is the Volen Sentir Pure Magic Healing version of 'Jinx' by Lost Desert and Hermanez.

There's naturally plenty to get the blood pumping throughout, from the thrillingly off-kilter Afro-house rhythms of Mike Agent X Clark's 'My Journey Thru Africanism', and Javontte's sensational 2021 single 'Soul People', to the liquid jazz-funk/deep house fusion of BRS' fantastic 'A Night To Remember' - all rubbery bass guitar, huggable chords, glistening guitars, fluttering flutes and swinging beats - and the driving, gospel-influenced peak-time brilliance of Laroye's 'Best Girlfriends (Soulful Mix)'. Review: To keep it in the family is to imply things stay pure and untainted, but the irony with the Keep It In The Family 12" series is that every record sounds raw and unsheltered. So, although 'Feel' and 'Move This Way' cycle through unperturbed and dreamatic sounds, their finish is rough, suggesting a well-wrought processing chain, the music having seen through many a prodigal battle. Retromigration's 'Fret' and Cem Mo's 'Rushmore' continue the mood of vintage deep raspiness, with one-up arpeggios closing out the final track with special glee.

Mateo & Matos - "Joy 2 My Life" (Dennis Collado mix) (5:53)
Vincent Floyd - "Economy Of Motion" (Vincent Inc remix) (7:38)
Review: We still don't know exactly who's behind these crucial drops on 14th Level Of Paradise, but at least we can be sure of the quality every time a new slab lands from on high. On this edition, Pawel Kobak opens up proceedings with a sweet, disco-sauteed heater with oodles of gorgeous instrumentation over a tough drum machine jack. Deep house don Callisto and DKMA get their sublime "Manga" reworked by Adam Jace, while Dennis Collado gets busy with Mateo & Matos' "Joy 2 My Life" in a dose of pure house uplift. Vincent Floyd's "Economy Of Emotion" is the final track, tastefully remixed by Vincent Inc who folds some subtle synth flourishes over the top of the crisp groove.

Review: Sole Aspect's fifth release brings together some of deep house's finest with some stylish grooves designed for the club. Chicago's Vick Lavender goes first and brings all 20 years of experience to his gorgeous 'Stratosphere'. Miami-based Electric Pickle resident Puma then offers pad-laced deep house daydream 'Defining Moments' which has a nice sombre feel, and hugely consistent Melchior Sultana then lays down more of his sunset sounds with shuffling drums and melted pads on 'Arcade'. The fast-rising, Brawther-tipped Daniel Chavez then shut down with 'FM Freeez' which is classic Detroit house with a late-night twist.

Purple Ice - "Adeus" (7:02)
Review: According to the hype sheet we have to hand, the "Home Turf EP" is House of Disco's first multi-artist extravaganza for two years. There's plenty to get the juices flowing throughout, from the bounding bounciness of LPM's rap-sampling disco-house cut "Get With It", to the impeccably warm and sun-kissed jazz-house vibes of Purple Ice's "Adeus". In between you'll find the rolling, synth-heavy warmth of Mix & Fairbanks' deliciously loved-up "Shergar's Revenge" and "Me, You, Us" by Shee, a chunky sample-house number full of swirling strings, looped guitar riffs, hazy chords and righteous spoken word samples.

Never Gonna Leave You (6:00)
Losing Memory (6:11)
Review: Leipzig's finest M Ono and Luveless are back on Houston via Detroit's Kolour with volume three of their new limited 10" series. Starting out with the deeply uplifting soulfulness of "Never Gonna Leave You 2K16" they are then into "Losing Memory" on the flip which gets more reduced, dubby and emotive, giving a nod to the kind of loopy deepness as heard on labels like Office or Slices Of Life. There really is something in the water out in Leipzig at the moment, great stuff!

U Got Me (6:17)
When We Want (6:47)
Review: Greenhouse Recordings label head and long-time master of deep house Andrew Macari steps up to his own imprint with a bunch of fine originals. The opener is a deep tech cut with steely drums that are tight and compelling and offset by smooth chords. Manuel Sahagun then steps up to remix and brings a touch of jazz to his chords which swirl around over heavyweight bass rumbles. 'U Got Me' is then a house sound that harks back to the DIY heyday of Nottingham with its bumping drums and lush chord work and 'When I Want' closes out with more fresh synths and an alluring female vocal.

Review: Brooklyn label Razor-N-Tape get in on the Record Store Day action with this 10" edition of Beatin Tha Breaks from Nashville-based Magic In Threes. It's the remixes that come first, with Dutch artist Fouk going into similar house territory to Kenny Dope with plenty of live instrumental touches blessing the bristling percussion. It's a totally different vibe on the Freddie Joachem remix, with the Californian opting for some midtempo funk breaks that stay closer to the sound of Magic In Threes' original version . This closes out the RSD release on the B-side and is an easy-breezy affair dripping with soulful guitars and harmonies.

Review: A relative newcomer to the scene, MAKEZ is fast spreading its wings. This duo finds itself back on the soulful house label Heist Recordings out of the Netherlands. "Closer" (feat AVA LAVA) gives us memories of classic Naked Music back in the last 90s. An ideal balance between jazzy house and deep house. "Running From The Noise" (feat Life On Planets) isn't far behind. Another upbeat gem where the vocal suits the deepness perfectly. 'The Answer' on the flip side amps things up with a more 90s techno approach that MAKEZ has the touch to still work in a great vocal on. Things get a bit deeper and darker with the more serious 'Gratitude' that completes the EP. Overall, 'The Midnight EP' has a terrific combination of soulful, uplifting and serious house music that never forgets the fun aspect. You would be glad to be a part of this party!

Review: Munk and Kapote's Toy Tonics label can just do no wrong. As well as the essential Support Ukraine Compilation there have been drops this year from Sam Ruffillo and Digital Ivan, and now they're following up the Lost Gomma Mixes 12" with this selection of versions from the Toy Tonics archives. First up Mangabey gets a swirling, psychedelic soul treatment from Folamour, before Pontchartrain gets into a heady deep house stew with Felipe Gordon's 'Tell Me Something True'. Demuja gets the beats bumping and the chords fuzzed out on the killer 'Brissy', while Sano and Kapote round the record off with the cool and deadly piano stabs of 'Sabrosito Tool'.

Review: Super juicy sounds here from Manhattan Project on this Juicy Fruits EP on Club Unite. There is old school bounce and playful organ loveliness to the opener 'Just Chillin' which is a super groovy, super cool cut to win over any crowd. 'I Need U' the glides on smooth hits with bubbling melodies and nice silvery hi hats oiling the groove. 'I'm Cumming' has a 90s New York bounce that will be irresistible in the club and 'I Believe' then closes out on some horn-lead goodness and gospel vocal joy with drums so perfectly well designed they are to die for.

Review: Iain Mann dons his Mannmademusic alias for another adventure in straight up house business, scoring a second release on the Shadeleaf Music label in the process! As with his previous outing on Shadeleaf, Mann is in no mood to fool around on Night Stories. There's five deep and funky house cuts on here, starting with the instantly seductive bassline of "Under" and ending with "Kofi & Cream", a tune which reminds us of Kyle Hall's early output and that would go down a storm in any DJ set. Quality house music for the aficionados.

Review: Wajeed's brilliant Dirt Tech Reck brings some Latin flair to this new 12" from Michele Manzo. 'NiNos Del Mar' is bright and sunny and hella lively from the off with opener 'Liquida' layering up warm, soulful chords and percussive drums with an exotic vocal loop. It's a great mix of organic and synthetic sounds and it radiates warmth and energy for any dance floor. 'Quasi' is a house shuffler with more minimal drums but still a sun-kissed sound thanks to the steamy vocals and tropical percussion which flutters over the relentless groove. Summer may be nearly over, but this one keeps the vibes well and truly alive.

Mirrored Cube (5:15)
Review: A warm welcome back to Brummie deep house don Mark Evetts, who resurfaces after 13 months away via a predictably pleasing Delusions of Grandeur label debut. He's in fine form from the off, peppering a squelchy bassline and soft-touch drums with sweet melodic motifs and tactile synthesiser chords on 'Swimming Through a Diamond'. He doffs a cap to his own hypnotic productions of old on the immersive, warming and analogue-rich 'Compact Object', before opting for a slightly jazzier and more organic sound on the locked-in, sun-speckled deepness of 'Heartaches'. 'Leading Into The Light' is marked out by gorgeous chords, bubbly electric piano motifs and mazy solos, while 'Mirrored Cube' is a pleasingly colourful and saucer-eyed slab of mid-tempo goodness that sounds like it was tailor-made for sofa-bound morning after listening sessions.

Here In Paradise (Nile River mix) (6:47)
Modest Intellect (6:56)
Organized Future (6:21)
Review: Detroit's Niko Marks comes through with a surprise three-track EP, 'Density', strictly limited to just 250 copies. Kicking things off with a fresh rerub of 'Here In Paradise', an effulgent, Detroit skyline-scouring cut sporting original vocals by Trina Williams, by the moniker Nile River, we're met with a boundlessly enjoyable paradisiacal fantasy, one that is perhaps unattainable in life, yet nonetheless worth peering in on. Then there's two beautiful B-siders, where the real meat on the bone lies; 'Modest Intellect' and 'Organized Future' both deal in themes of the future, imagining Marks' preferred utopia as one in which kazooing, jazzy streetscapes abound; the exhorting question, "what does the future hold for you?" resounds on the A like a superegoic voice-in-the-head, while the reply comes in wordless, yet relaxed form on the blithely languid closer.

Review: Having dropped his Lagarius album earlier this year, Detroit mainstay Gary Martin is back on his Teknotika label with a collaborative EP with fellow Motor City legend Javonntte. The story goes that Martin had planned a break from the studio, but instead wound up connecting with Javonntte to lend his considerable keyboard talents to one of Martin's beats, which wound up in two different versions of 'The Infinite Time', now found on the B-side of this single. In both mixes, Javonntte's keys soar high and Martin's beats move with a broken flex that only adds to the jazziness. A-side track 'Zurvan' came after, balancing the record out with an Eastern-tinged melodic scale which gives the record an enchanting, mysterious quality.

Review: The Nitecap EP is the first collection of music created by jazz multi-instrumentalist Marquinn Mason and FWM Entertainment mastermind Stefan Ringer. This 6 track EP is striking to say the least. One can tell from the artwork this is something different. The stand out track for the DJs is "The Light". This one is straight forward space funk in a dance track. It has that big room sound reminscent of "Sexual Obsession". The title track "Nitecap" has to be the true stand out. Mason's jazz influence stands out over the organic broken beat rhythm section. The tone of this one is deep and introspective. "Pulling Closer" and "Falling Notes" are both unique cuts in their own right. Both tunes really show a different take on rhythm, bounce and energy and how those elements interact with melody to create something unlike most music you hear in the dance music space. The last two cuts, "Tiny Keys" and "Cocomango" are down tempo grooves with some soul and sauce thrown in. Perfect for background vibes for a kickback or just listening around the house.
