Black Mustang vs Kerrier District - "Mad As Hell"

Black Mustang - "Blackout" (part 2)
Review: "Blackout" was created by a collaboration between Black Mustang and the magical Kerrier District (Luke Vibert), Cornwall's answer to Metro Area. Kerrier Distract provided the chunky disco beats over which the Mustang stacked layers of Moog and tripped out dub vocals. This LoEB release with scare the hell out of your ears.

Summer Love (3:09)
Review: More quality grooves from Washington DC label specializing in reissuing obscure and unknown 70s and 80s dance music. This time around is Dreamcast who are Davon Bryant in conjunction with Swedish guy Sasac aka King Al. "Liquid Deep" is sexy late night deep funk the way it was always intended and Bryant's smooth as silk vocals are just like... Wow! So with Dreamcast on the vocals and Sasac on the beat, we are hoping there's more things on the way from this trans coastal duo in 2017.

Elado - "25.4 Millimeters" (5:21)
Scruscru & S Timoshenko - "Ace! ID?" (5:21)
Funkyjaws - "In Your Ear With It" (5:53)
Review: The FunkyJaws Music label invites us deep into their world for a third time here with another delicious 12".It's a various artists EP that features one of our top disco favourites - Eddie C. He opens up with 'Do You Wanna Dance' which has vocals pacing about the mix and old school acid bass twangs under raw house drums. Elado's '25.4 Millimeters' is a Middle Eastern funk workout with spangled drum hits and the flip side brings twisted acid disco and the cosmic trip that is 'In Your Ear With It' from Funkyjaws themselves.

Dance Par Amour

Dance Par Amour (extended vocal) (9:36)
Dance Par Amour (Erotique dub) (9:04)
Review: Disco lovers Leng enlist enduring disco wizard and studio genius The Emperor Machine for a big new single here that was made alongside Severine Mouletin. It comes as two versions on this new 12", with the extended vocal going fist. It's a steamy and tropical bit of disco with feathery, whispered and seductive French language vocals over squelchy synth bass and hip swinging claps. Cosmic twinges finish it in style and on the flip side it gets a little more wild and tropical. An eco-system of synth daubs and neon colours bring the groove to life in a more interplanetary way.

Review: Kaninchenbau's main collaborators Sokur and The Funk District helm this latest intergalactic journey in the form of 'All Over You'. It's a superbly tasteful and deep disco joint with lush synth work and the sort of groovy drums that make every head to the floor and get down. Next to the original is a classic 'House Mix' version and then comes two epic remixes on the flip. Both are from accomplished and ever busy Razor-N-Tape producers Nenor and DJ Vas who bring a real touch of classic to their work and offer a different look than the A-side.

Frikardo - "I Believe" (5:24)
I Gemin - "Golden" (4:26)
Cosmocomics - "Glamorous Garcon" (5:13)
Review: A top value for money opportunity here, as Moiss Music deliver the latest in their sweet and sticky Jam series of various artist 12" line ups, bringing you no less than six bubbling, vivacious disco triumphs from six artists. Khemir's 'Disco Bandit' kicks off proceedings, a production that sounds like it was made by a band of around 45 musicians, a proper cavalcade of strings, brass, brazen disco thump and beautifully bold vocals. Wurzelholz's 'Prince' goes for a bit more economy but with a slinky funk bassline like that - not to mention the occasional exclamation from the purple overlord himself - it's equally devastating in dancefloor terms. Among the other highlights, 'Golden' by I Gemin has the feel of a lost Daft Punk flip tune and Cosmocomics' 'Glamorous Garcon', boasting 70s-style synth bubbles that are as cute as they are retro. Tasty as ever.

Eddie Logix - "Sunday Palaver" (Dazzle Drums remix) (6:33)
Nois Land - "Big Kahuna" (Eddie Logix remix) (7:32)
Review: America's Rocksteady Disco label returns for its second round up of delectable remixes and VIPs, with a continent clashing fusion of pan African vitality and cool house saunter across all four offerings. Ontario-based Igor B leads the release with a drum and sub bass heavy dancefloor reimagining of Moonlighter's iconic "Give Us Rain (Ah Mila)".before Blair French reworks Sol Power All-Stars' 'Every Time You Move', making the most of electric bass from Jazzanova's Paul Randolph, guitar by Frank Martin (Elcados, Shina Peters) and DC-based Besufekad Tadesse's baritone sax solo via the mixing desk controls. The flip goes even deeper, with Tokyo-based Dazzle Drums giving Eddie Logix's 'Sunday Palaver' the hi-fi Afro Tech treatment, perfect for those dingy after hours parties, before Logix's Balearic-esque reinterpretation of Nois Land's cult classic 'Big Kahuna' brings proceedings to a glorious close.

(Got To) Move On (feat Afra Kane - remix) (3:35)
Rosa Da Ribeira (feat Toco - remix) (3:43)
Review: Stefano Tirone's career as S-Tone Inc stretches right back to the dawn of the 1990. Back then, he was joining the dots between deep house and acid jazz, but over the decades since he's settled in to a groove rooted in nu-jazz and soul. On this seven-inch, he revisits two tracks from his fine 2020 album Body & Soul. First, he re-imagines 'Move On', featuring vocalist Afra Kane, as a sumptuous chunk of disco-influenced dancefloor soul - all Chic style bass and guitars, hazy horns, lilting synth-strings and crunchy Clavinets - before reframing the Toco-voiced Latin number 'Rosa De Rebeira' as a warming chunk of samba-house loveliness.

Took A Chance On Love (3:14)
Don't Wanna Lose Your Love (4:43)
Review: Satin Finish started out as a trio of Goldsboro musicians namely Donald Oliver on keys, Joe Exum on drums and Dennis Kornegay on bass. They were all scouted to the Greenback Records label out of New Jersey by two producers by the names of George Greene and Gary D. Jackson. High school graduate Karen Scott was the band's vocalist and here she does a fine job across a pair of stunning and spine tingling cuts of soul drenched, mid tempo disco funk. 'Took A Chance On Love' has great harmonies and dancing keys to get you moving and 'Didn't Wanna Lose Your Love' is the more sentimental slow song for smoochy moments.

High Class (Slynk mix) (3:41)
Review: XL Middleton is an absolute don of boogie. He can bend his synths and warp his baselines into fresh new forms and make sure than anyone who hears them has to pop their body non stop. He brings that studio mastery to a remix here of 'High Class' by Sauce Lady that is full of withering sci-fi pads, fresh vocal hooks and bright pads. His version is pretty unbeatable to be honest but on the flip the Slynk mix has a fine go of remixing it with a more upbeat and strident groove.

There is squelchy synth-funk on the international opener with its gorgeous backing vocals and lead Portuguese verses. Disco Thing (2:56)
Your Love (3:03)
Review: It was way back in 1977 when disco collective Seaquence made their debut on Aidqueen Records, a tiny, independent label based in their home city of San Diego, California. That debut, a delightful but extremely hard to find "45", has long been in demand amongst deep disco collectors, hence this timely reissue on Athens of the North. The real killer is A-side 'Disco Thing', a tight-but-freewheeling chunk of disco-funk piled high with alternate male/female vocals, loose-limbed drum-breaks, punchy horns, swooping strings and squelchy synth sounds. Original B-side 'Your Love' is a deeper and far sweeter affair - a traditional flipside slow jam that's as tear-jerking as it is effortlessly soulful.

Review: New York City label Razor N Tape are back with more of their surefire disco jams. This one comes from Sentimental Animals feat Nicki B who serve up 'Love Vibration.' It is a playful and booty shaking jam with lovely plump bass and a gorgeous vocal that encourages you to move. Filled with synth warmth and a little disco dazzle, it's a colourful and accessible tune that cannot fail. When Love Breaks Down (7" edit) (4:18)
Review: Not only has it been some 15 years since The Shapeshifters bothered the pop charts with soaring disco-house anthem "Lola's Theme", but also nearly a decade since their last vinyl single. Appearing on a tasty seven-inch single, this two-tracker for Glitterbox features some of their strongest work since those halcyon days. A-side "Try My Love On (For Size)" is arguably the duo's most "pure" disco cut to date - a classic production that boasts rising horns, sweeping strings and a strong, Salsoul-esque vocal from Teni Tinks. Turn to the flip for the more relaxed and groovy "When Love Breaks Down", a future end-of-night anthem that's as poignant as it is uplifting.

Review: Taken from the soundtrack of the cult 1985 film Fast Forward directed by Sidney Poitier, Siedah Garret's legendary song 'Do You Want It' receives a much deserved remix package here, courtesy of Australian label Tinted. Some of their finest exports front up, namely Perth legend Greg 'Dr' Packer who is up first with his super low slung Back To The '90s remix, while Jolyon Petch's Elektrik Disko remix nails that deep funky house sound of the same golden era. The original still packs a punch too, and we can assure you it's indeed featured (over on the flip) in all its neon-lit electro-boogie glory.

Review: DJ collective Siffleur shoes off their skills and wide tastes here on a new EP that mixes up all manner of weird and wonderful sounds . There is Italo disco, ethno-funk, Balearic sounds and plenty of leftfield design to these cuts. They are stringy and sinewy but muscular enough to work on the dance floor as well as outdoors in the sun. The opener is a sensual cut with a hint of 80s nostalgia and tropical heat to it. Then on the flip side things get more drama and late night with a pink neon hue accompanying you on a late night walk through downtown.

This one finds Siggatunez at the helm with all eyes on the dancefloor and seven-odd minute opener 'Wonder' sure will fill it up with its bustling brew of big horns, la-la vocals and funk bass. 'Source Of Love' is a slightly more subdued and loved-up sound with plenty of sun-kissed percussive flair and 'Dance' then gets groovy on loopy bass and jumbled toms. 'G's Sax' closes down with another big assemblage of toms, hits, bass riffs and loose kicks that make you want to move all your limbs at once.

Even though the originals still do plenty of damage, Marco Fratty & Marco Flash have decided to serve up a couple of fresh updates for the year 2021. Smith was introduced to local musicians and bands as a result and was soon playing the local circuit. He landed a record label 18 months later and his first single came in 1973. Success followed as did an album that never actually got roasted. It was then in 1983 that he laid down the slow-burning mid-tempo soul numbers which feature in this 7" for the first time.

Sudi 'Space Ghost' Wachspress handles the production on these three swaying, sex-soul tidbits, while Teddy Bryant aka. Urbyne tops things off, adding melismatic croons to the affair. A-sider 'Heaven Sent' is a glistening, ecstatic exercise in digi-R&B moods, as Bryant sings of excited imaginations and loving fantasies. But suffice it to say, both of the tunes on this red hot 7" are disco dazzlers. The first side is a real disco stepper with boogie synth bass, crisp drum work and the sort of perfect female vocal that just gets people going. Emancipacao (5:05)
50 Anos Em 5 (4:37)
Review: Diogo Strausz has previously released on Razor-N-Tape as part of the duo Balako but now steps up as a solo artist to kick off the label's 2021. A Sao Paulista now living in Paris, he brings plenty of musicality to the slick 7", firstly with 'Emancipacao,' which is awash with melancholic keys and rich bass but also plenty of fantastic leads from both synths and sax. It's splashy and splashy and colourful disco. '50 Anos Em 5' then gets playful and funky with a Latin twist as the salsa beats an squelchy bass all make you want to spin on your heels.

I Remember Mama (5:16)
Sound Design (5:30)
I Remember Mama (NAD Discomix) (11:00)
Review: "Emotional Rescue presents the first ever reissue of Sugar Minott's rare 12" of I Remember Mama. Recorded in Soho in mid-80s London, the Boogie meets Reggae song comes in vocal and instrumental mixes, as well as a wonderfully teasing long Discomix by NAD aka Dan Tyler (Idjut Boys).

Having grown up and become a star out of Kingston, JA, with over 50 albums and hundreds of singles for the likes of Studio One and Black Roots labels, the legendary vocalist was a pioneer of the Dancehall and then later Lovers Rock sounds.

Based in London for much of the 1980s, a chance meeting in the Wackies offices he met producer Steve Parr, who had recently opened the Sound Design Studio next door.

Hatching the idea to create a label to showcase their capabilities, Parr played all the instruments except the distinctive sax by friend Andy MacDonald, while Minott's delivery is at his prime, storytelling in the Jamaica tradition of hardship and praise.

Released on 7" and 12", they have striking differences. The "Sound Design" instrumental / version sees the studio team craft a disco meets reggae in a cod-style to wonderful, almost Balearic effect.

The collaboration with Dan Tyler continues, as he again works his desk dubbing magic. Extending and editing between the two mixes, teasing the instrumental before finally bringing the sax and vocals together for a 'discodub' finale. "

Sun Rhythms - "Flowers Festival" (4:18)

Ground Plane Aerial - "Transition SP" (6:11)
VIGI - "I Am You" (5:06)
Monny Me - "The Name Of The Game" (5:35)
Ugly Frankie - "Free Alcohol Shit" (4:32)
Review: St Petersberg's Dobro label is noted not just for the quality and playability of its funky house and disco re-edits, but also for its value for money. This, their seventh release, is another great example, with no less than six floorfillers included on one 12", each bringing their own individual mood to the table. 'Flowers Festival' from Sun Rhythms has throbbing organs and fruity keys, topped off by a gorgeous Russian vocal. DJ Merci's 'Timetable' goes for chunky rave pianos and Fairlight stabs, lending it an 80s Italo-disco feel, before Ground Plane Aerial's 'Transition SP' closes the side with slap bass and stripped down house vibe that echoes some of Roule Records' more accessible moments. Side two VIGI's 'I Am You', is the most memorable of the whole package, with its idiosyncratic female vocal weaving a magical spell around the listener, before we finish off with a double whammy of Monny Me's swirling stringfest 'The Name Of The Game' and the parping horns and strutting groove of Ugly Frankie's 'Free Alcohol Shit', the latter including a bewitching and unexpected piano solo. Great work all round.

Attack The Dancefloor: Special Remix EP

Prospect Park - "The Kinda Love" (Jkriv remix) (8:06)
Jakatta - "My Vision" (feat Seal - The Vision remix) (7:03)
Review: Dave Lee aka Joey Negro has pulled together a fine team of remixers here to serve up their own versions of tunes by him, Jakarta, The Sunburst Band and Prospect Park, all for his own Z Records. Freerange boss and deep house Don Jimspter goes first and brings real sunshine to his take on 'He Is.' Detroit badman Andres then does what he does best to 'I Recognise', that is layering in hip hop slanted beats and nice rolling baselines under lush chords. On the flip are two more positive house vibrations to make this a handy EP.

Daydreaming (instrumental) (4:03)
Review: XL Middleton's first 45rpm on the mighty Star Creature Universal Vibrations label is a majestic collab with the amazing Saucy Lady. 'Daydreaming' is pure good time music, packed with sunshine and to-die-for boogie baselines that wiggling away beneath jazz-funk chords and funked up drums. It's an irresistible jam as the temps go up, and if for someone reason you want to hear it without the effortlessly cool vocal, you can flip this 7" over for a fine instrumental jam. With debuts as good as this, the label is sure to want more from XL - we certainly do.

Frankie Knuckles Edits: Disco Queen #4117
XXX - "XXX" (8:45)
South Shore Comission - "Free Man" (9:53)
Review: More unearthed disco edits from the godfather of house music Frankie Knuckles, courtesy of the legendary Disco Queen. On the A side we have some rather deep down and dirty blaxploitation vibes (also sampled by Jamie 3:26 on "Dr F**K" several years ago) over a minimal proto-house drum track on "XXX" by XXX. On the flip, we have the powerful soul explosion of South Shore Commission's "Free Man" from their self-titled album of 1975. Now this one shows you all what a 'respectful edit' really is - listen and learn!

Review: Running Back presents the fourth edition of the Swallow This various artists series, featuring five tracks by five different producers, all straddling the line between 'remodeled deep house techniques and floor mechanics.' On the first side we have the deep, down and dirty retro house shenanigans of Yungruzt's 'Starlight' (feat Eluize) followed by strobed-out rave energy of Baldo's 'Human Connection'. Over on the flip, 9th House delivers the EP standout on the glassy-eyed and bittersweet 'Ara', while Delphi gets a vibe reminiscent of Sueno Latino on the epic '7_11 House'.

Review: Earlier this year, Defected offshoot Glitterbox Recordings delivered its first documentary, Where Love Lives, a loving tribute to the power of "dancefloor expression and liberation" which was filmed over 18 months in Paris, Ibiza, New York and London. This expansive three-disc set showcases cuts from the film's soundtrack, with Defected boss Simon Dunmore and Glitterbox A&R chief Seamus Haji acting as curators. The 52-track set is little less than a whirlwind tour of revivalist disco, nu-disco and modern boogie, with reworks of classic cuts sitting side by side with celebrated contemporary cuts and future classics - all rippling with a mixture of squelchy basslines, electrofunk synths, sweeping disco orchestration, crunchy cowbells, fluid piano solos and heady, life-affirming vocals. If you dig disco, you'll definitely dig this.

Review: At the tail end of the '80s, Sylvia Striplin quit Norman Connors' jazz-funk group Aquarian Dream in order to pursue a solo career. Joining forces with producers James Bedford and Roy Ayers, she recorded 1981 debut album "Give Me Your Love", a well regarded but largely overlooked set that has since become a sought-after item amongst soul collectors. This Expansion reissue presents the album on CD for the first time in two decades. As with many soul albums of the period, it sashays between jazz-funk, boogie and heartfelt slow jams, contrasting memorable dancefloor workouts (see stone cold classic "Give Me Your Love" and a stellar cover of Roy Ayers favourite "Searchin") with more saccharine, loved-up fare. This edition also boasts a couple of bonus cuts, including the superb 7" mix of "Give Me Your Love".

Review: Donna Summer's I'm a Rainbow is one of the more curious albums in the disco diva's catalogue, in part because it was never officially completed in 1981 (it eventually saw the light of day in 1996) and saw her diversify and update her sound for the post-disco era. This lavish package offers a new perspective on the set, with a variety of producers offering "recovered and recoloured" interpretations. There are some fine revisions on show, many of which add a polished, 21st century nu-disco sheen to Summer's songs. Highlights include the hybrid disco/80s soul take on 'I Believe (In You)' by Figo Sound, the chiming, AM-radio friendly, Jam & Lewis style Le Flex remix of 'Sweet Emotion', and Ladies On Mars various Hi-NRG/synth-pop influenced reworks of 'Brooklyn', Highway Runner' and 'Leave Me Alone'.
