Review: The Kwench label is back with more tasteful and timeless house and techno fusions here as Ad & The Persuader link up for The Truth EP. The title cut opens up with some lazy, wavy, dubby grooves with heady pads and then a dub version makes it even more fleshy and horizontal. 'Strolling' keeps things classy and deep cut with pillowy kicks toped with starry-eyed melodies and some glitchy perc. An cappella closes out the EP for DJ use. This is a quietly excellent 12" that oozes quality.

A five track various artist EP, Voice Notes 002 is a time-honoured memorial for its sister label London Housing Trust, that they shut down a few years ago after 10 releases. Review: Emerald's 25th outing takes the form of another superb compilation with four artists who have already released on the label and plenty of new names making an equally good impression. ANNE kicks off with the deep, thudding kicks of 'Coral Reefs' complete with lush hits to smooth the groove. There is more weight and intensity to the oversized hi-hats ringlets on Mike Konstantinidis's 'Apocalypse', DJ Plant Texture layers in plenty of gritty and grime to his gritty 'Swingers' and Jarrod Yeates goes for a twisted after-party vibe on his intense and unrelenting 'Sesh Gremlin', with many more highlights besides.

Review: Some serious peak time weapons for the main room on offer here, from the ever reliable Swedish label Drumcode. Usual heroes of the label such as Luigi Madonna, Sam Paganini and Joseph Capriati step aside for some other equally reliable staples. On the A, side label boss Adam Beyer teams up with Enrico Sangiuliano on the evocative and life affirming "Preset Heaven" which takes its cues from early trance with its amazing chord progression. It is something more typical of the label next, on the pummelling warehouse stomp of "Muzik" by Bulgaria's Timmo. On the flip, there's more trance nostalgia on offer again - this time from legends Pig & Dan on the hypnotic/melodic bliss of "La Bruja" which we could imagine melting the minds of festival crowds well into the new year. Finally they save the best for last with French peak time specialist Julian Jeweil, serving up the furious, tunneling and strobe-lit ultraviolence of "Nasa" which will have your adrenaline going from the first beat. It has been a stellar year for the powerhouse label, with great releases by Moby, Dubfire and newcomer Layton Giordani.

Review: Rampant and 'up for it' as usual, the Cititrax label is back with a new set of wayward technoid experiments for the more trained ears on the dancefloors. This time it's Romania's Borusiade and newcomer The Sixteen Steps who share two sides of a wax plate and, of course, proceed to annihilate any idea of a quiet night in. The former sets off with the mechanical acid bumps of "Infatuation", guided by an eerie set of vocal blurs, and that's followed by the comparatively more beat-centric techno of the apocalyptic "Confutation". On the flip, The Sixteen Steps first lands on "Signals From The South", a house banger with noxious levels of mutant bass at its core, followed by the single-minded industrialism and sheer techno brutality of "Promises On The Run". WOWZAH!

Review: Oh yes, we love it when Theo represses some of his most sought after tracks and this one is particularly well-timed. Leron Carson is still an unknown figure, a kid who used to make viciously raw and futuristic techno tracks in the late 1980's! "China Trax", alongside the rest of his tracks on a different Sound Signature double 12", is totally ahead of its time and if it was truly made in 1987 then it is nothing short of amazing. Of course, it's not just the year it was made in that's interesting but also the fact that it's music without an age, able to be appreciated by any generation of techno freaks. Theo's own "Insane Asylum" on the flipside is also pretty monumental; rigged beats, off-kilter grooves and that familiar spontaneity so heavily associated to the label.

Review: Fearsome techni-techno through the Swiss futurists ENMODA, whose modus operandi is to actively promote and advocate for the local Swiss scene. With chilling textures and an ear for material, sonic grit, a cloister of ten producers are heard going full Eski-mode here, for the first instalment in their yearly compilation, Alpine Express Volume 1. Aptly described as a set of "dancefloor hurters", this is a record that proves the mid-European enclave still have their ears to the ground: pree the classic trance-techno of Marcism's 'Echo' or Ermatik's 'Funk Alt Delight', The Chronics' restlessly fight-or-flight revenant, 'Sonic Memory', and/or TIS' closing jit-tech piano weapon 'I Don't Mind'.

Review: Those with a deep knowledge of electro and techno will be salivating at the prospect of More Than A Machine: Part 1, an EP that boasts cuts from such legends of the scene as Sterac Electronics, The Advent and Christian Smith. All deliver the goods, of course, as does rising star Client 03, whose EP-opening 'Regression Container' brilliantly flips between shimmering, deep space ambient and warming, tactile electro dreaminess. Those looking for more rugged and robust club fare should check Sterac Electronics 'Reinstated', with its' out-there lead lines and machine-gun bass, and the sleazy, up-tempo futurism of the Adveny and Zein Ferreira's 'Seven'. Christian Smith's deep, Kraftwerk-influenced 'Pressure Drop' rounds off a predictably strong EP.

Review: Transmigration return with more brilliantly psychedelic techno sounds which have been carefully dug out from the rich archives of cult UK label Hollistic Recordings. As always, those originals have been remastered and restored and this one features a devastating a-side from Iestyn Polson and Steve Dungey of Projective Vision. Their mind melting and 13 plus minute 'Elevate' is a brilliantly involving mental trip and then on the flip side comes the gurgling and acid laced widescreen prog techno trip of 'Golden Eyed' by Thunderhead aka Polson joining forces with Jason Meherin. Plenty of retro future magic to tap into here.

Review: Drei Vinyl launched back in 2023 and has slowly but surely amassed a respectable catalogue of various artists' releases. This sixth outing is the most straight-up techno offering yet and it opens with one of Spain's finest in Eduardo De La Calle. 'Deva5Vyasa' is heady and otherworld loop techno perfection with synth daubs and conscious vocals peppering the rubbery kicks. DJ Shufflemaster brings more texture to the raw, percussive madness of 'Axiom' and Tensal layers up unsettling and anxious synth murmurs with rising drum tension on 'Thermal Cycler.' Pergo's 'Lume' is a brash, industrial closer full of urgency.

Review: Hard techno is very much back in vogue right now, all across Europe and beyond. Sacred Court taps into that demand with various artists EP that is edgy, raw and effective. It is Dexphase that kicks off with 'Stay True To Yourself' layering up wooden hits, icy hi hats and slamming drums. KOZLOV's 'Darkness' has real dystopian menace to it with the wiry pads that bring unsettling energy to the distorted basslines and hammering drums. Raxeller's 'Corrupted' is hyperderiven with kicks stacked up almost on top of each other as moody trance pads light up the backdrop. Tham's 'Never The Right Time' is a fourth and final highly destructive weapon to keep the rave kids marching.

Review: Soma sub-label Avoidant Records recently put out a fantastic collection fo electro cuts but it was a digital only release. Now some of the standouts from it get pulled together on this fresh new 12"that joins the dots between Europe and Detroit. DJ Godfather kicks off with some rapid fire 313 electro, squirrelling bass and slick claps then 'One Direct Line' from The Exaltics is more cosmic and blissed out with lush ambient synths. On the flip, Flug goes hard with mad digital patterns and Blaktony layers up jacking drums, corrugated bass and dark hits. Great stuff.

Review: DJ Hyperactive's now-defunct Contact was the label that first put out this cult cut from 1996. Some 25 years later it now gets a welcome reissue on Truncate's own self-titled label and features a remix from the techno titan himself. 'Reptilian Tank' gets a breath of new life and a refreshing new remix by label boss Truncate. First up is the original - a head-wrecking, panel-beating techno rave-up with wispy pads and pulsating bass that is full of pent-up energy. The remix is a speedy, stripped-back version that races ahead with all the urgency of a shooting star.

Review: Mord has put together a bumper collection of 17 searing techno cuts as part of its Herdersmat compilation but is also seeing up four at a time on individual 12"s. There is no messing with Part 41 which opens with DJ Shufflemaster & Go Hiyama's ear-splitting, brain frazzling 'Salasa Geometric'. Bartig Move opts for a much more minimal and roomy sound on the rolling 'Asistencia' then Tensal picks up the pace once more with the rusty loops and broken beats of 'Esbar'. Aocram's 'Dreams In NYC' is a swamp, depraved closer for late night mischief.

Review: Robert Drewek vs Tomie Nevada's 'Time 4 More' EP was originally released on Unleash Records in 2005. Nine years on and Rawax are reissuing it on black wax and the tunes sound as good as ever. 'While He's Away' is a slick blend of garage-infused house drums and warm synth pulses with catchy vocal samples that bring a hint of old school. On the flip is 'Down With the Bass' which flips the script with a stripped back and militant but silky groove, dubby pads and a head's down vibe that really hypnotises.

Review: Astonishingly, 18 years has now passed since Gilles Aiken - probably more celebrated these days for his work under the alternate Desert Sky alias - first offered up off-kilter tech-house tracks as Edward. Last year, he impressed with a wonderfully deep and unctuous EP on deep house imprint Smallville; here, he makes his bow on another must-check label, Kalahari Oyster Cult. In keeping with the imprint's love of all things trippy and otherworldly, opener 'Tentacle' sees him wrap chiming lead lines, psychedelic synth motifs, weird noises and layers of percussion to a chunky, locked-in house groove. Aiken then goes off piste via a skewed, druggy and at times dreamy tech-house remix of Trybet's 'Moodsetter'. Arguably best of all though is impossible-to-pigeonhole flip-side 'Dr Octo', which is immersive, unsettling, tactile and eccentric in equal measure.

Review: Illegal Alien continues its 16th anniversary celebrations here with another volume, the fifth, of its limited edition Illegal Alien XVI series. Across all eight volumes once they are out there will be a total of 44 exclusive tracks and 46 great artists all tracing the evolution of techno over the last decade and a half. This edition is a superb one that fins plenty of innovation in techno, from the paranoid and warped synth energy of DJ Shufflemaster's 'Bizarre' to the tightly woven and intricate synth layers of Urban Groove's 'Aftertouch' via Unkle Fon's dry, stepped back techno funker 'Violet.'

Review: Merman is a brand-new label from Spain bringing some searing techno heat. This debut 12" is a fierce four-track with different arts taking care of each aural assault, starting with Elektrabel. 'Sernafet' is a manic mix of loopy snares and pulsing synths, metallic drum sounds and sweeping filters. SPIDJ brings a little more heavyweight techno funk to 'Fuerza Analogica' and Akenaton then gets raw, dark and dirty with the industrial menace of 'Cambio De Actitud.' The Zenobit3 shuts down with some spritely electro-tinged techno on 'Milikis Suffering'.

Review: Nation of Jak offshoot Dirty Blends was established by label chief Melvin Oliphant as a vehicle for "interpretations" and "homages" - in plain-speak hush-hush reworks, tribute tracks and those that sample liberally. The label's latest release is a compilation of sorts, featuring as it does cuts from a trio of artists. The Falcon steps up first with title track 'Sound The Alarm', a raw, jacking, bouncy and positive mind-melding blend of lo-fi synth stabs, sweat-soaked beats, fire alarm noises and restless drum machine fills. Over on side B, Grizzly Knuckles' 'Mad Bell' - a breathless, house tempo techno workout built around a nagging synth-bell loop - is followed by label regular The Jak's 'Aftermath', which sits somewhere between jacking lo-fi techno, UK funky and stab-happy Soca-house.

Review: Foxbam Inc is a new label from underground Scottish talent Foxtrot and countryman and long-time acid lover Egebamyasi. Both feature on this first EP which is a various artists affair inspired by many years of playing and partying in the dance world. HIs 'Freaky Foundations' kick off with flat-footed and hard-assed techno, then comes Mr Gasmark who has roots in back metal but loves "a dark acid cocktail". He serves up a high-octane 303-laced monster banger here in the form of a remix of Araknoid. Egebamyasi's 'Fryer State Of Unconsciousness' is a wall of distorted noise and sheet metal synths that never let up. Last of all is a remix from Mark Archer, half of the legendary Altern8, and here offers up a jacking house cut with fat acid lines tearing it up.

Review: Lost in Music: Post Industrial Dreamscape is a powerful film made by British artist Jermaine Francis. This is its soundtrack and it is a collaboration between Tony Bontana and Francis himself. The soundscape mirrors the film's moody and smoky dissonance as it delves into Post-Industrial Britain's social and political landscape through Francis's life. After being inspired by seeing the film, Full Circle saw potential in the track and remixed it into a loose yet mechanical sound with trippy synths and churning bass, while Ukrainian artist Shjva added her own interpretation that is a much more heady and dee bit of techno with cosmic synth overtones and an otherworldly feel.

Review: Layton Giordani reigns as one of the thing-pins of "techno's new school", and his latest collab with Tiga and Audion is a neat testament to this fact. 'Let's Go Dancing' indeed does make clever use of breathy effects and rising reeses, but the track's main message - its exhortation to go dancing with us - is best conveyed by its vocal message, which, by the sheer power of repetitiousness alone, grabs us by the arm and corrals us into the dance whether we like it or not. A rabble-rousing, slick new techno rumpus, you won't be allowed out of the nightclub for as long as this one plays back.

Review: Yay Recordings closes out another solid 12 months with a various artists' EP that showcases right where the label is at. Heavy Mental kicks off with 'Dabro', a colourful and loopy house jaunt for sunny days. Twowi's 'Metaverse' takes off to the cosmos on lithe electro rhythms with ice-cold beats and widescreen pads. Parchi Pubblici & Lucretio's 'Aladdin Sane' brings some wonky deep tech vibes with of-balance drums and muffled spoken words and Rinaldo Makaj closes down with a fresh party sound perfect for cosy floors. Review: A couple of years back, the revitalised Hooj Choons label released an album of orchestra-sporting covers of classic dance cuts of the 1990s under the HEO: Hooj Ensemble Orchestra tag, then got rave revivalists Borai and Denham Audio to remix their new version of trance classic 'Cafe Del Mar'. Here those mixes - a frankly filthy, bass-propelled 'Rave Booty' mix and a more acid-flecked, grandiose breakdown-sporting 'Pluck Dub' - finally make it onto wax, alongside the Club Glow duo's similarly previously digital-only reworks of Transformer 2's early 90s 'Hooj' classic 'Fruit of Love'. More tactile and loved up, with tactile bass, pleasing pianos and glassy-eyed vocal snippets, the pair's 'Redux' mix is simply sublime, while Borai's solo dub is a deliciously dreamy, rush-inducing affair that sounds like a future rave classic.

Review: Jumpin' & Pumpin' looks back into the seminal archives of The Future Sound of London here to reissue their fantastic The Pulse EP from 2008 which also featured tunes from Manchester pair Indo Tribe. It is they who start with 'Bring In The Pulse' which features some Happy Mondays hallelujahs, mad rave whistles and bristling electronic breaks. 'In The Mind Of A Child' (First Born mix) is then a bouncy techno cut with more visceral synth and acid lines and The Future Sound Of London kick off the flipside with 'Hardhead' (Frothin' At The Mouth mix) which is an assault of breaks, congas, whistles and rave signifiers. 'Pulse State' (831 AM mix) is that perfect tune to zone out to on a late night drive on the motorway.

Review: Griffe launches its own new split series here with Mama and Torrent kicking things off. Mama goes first with a pair of potent techno cuts. 'Electric Pjack' opens up with some acidic lines spraying about a tightly assembled groove with sliding hi-hats and well-syncopated beats. 'Cyber Pjack' then gets a little darker with a more menacing low end and snappy drums keeping the beats upright. Torrent's two cuts keep the future feels alive with the mechanical grooves and malfunctioning sounds of 'Stay In The Loop' and 'Ex Machina' shuts down with some frazzled synths adding texture to the metallic drum sounds.

Review: Chris Liberator's experimental techno label Maximum/Minimum forms part of the Stay Up Forever Collective umbrella, which has been going for a heck of a long time (since 1995-ish), charting untouched terrains of teratological UK hardcore techno. An offshoot imprint dedicated to the "creative corruptions" of the Stay Up Forever crew, Liberator and co. would originally release these ones without catalogue numbers, that is until the market beseeched them to behave more conventionally. Now, well past their 65th V/A release, comes their latest, a decapitatory pummeller fronted by Sonico's 'Did You Say Acid?' and Zyco Seon's 'Citric Frequencies'.

Review: Serious seriality from the OHM Series, an imprint and sole patent owner of the rare, aurally administered chemical known as Omega X. The alphabetic Greek letter ohm determines impedance / resistance in an electrical circuit, and so too do each of the dub techno tracks released on the OHM Series amount to tergiversating transductions, their chillout chord-knocks and hardened beats never quite letting us settle. Though titles like 'Innocence' and 'Downtime' persist here, the tracks perhaps inadvertently prove that flow is impossible without resistance: Separation's track is especially unorthodox in its strange reordering of phaser, pan and saturation effects on the pad-stab, which produces an unusual swirling effect.

Regent's 'Decoder' is a more minimal sound but unfurls high speed with a deep vibe and Hertz Collision/Programma 101's 'Concrete Skin' is all about masterful loops and eerie synths. Review: Iceland's Thule offshoot label 66 Degrees was a vital label back in the day. After a 20-year hiatus, it came back strong in August and now follows up quickly with a second superb EP. This one is a carefully curated various artists collection that pulls together some local house anthems new and old. Ozy's 'Sequential Dub' is a super smooth deep house number with lush chord work. Sanasol brings heavier, more raw house drums and grinding bass that will get floors in a sweat. Oz Artists mixes up a raw, mechanical groove with balmy, dreamy pads up top to make for something utterly compelling on 'Atomox; while last of all Terry Cummingz pays homage to dusty Windy City house on his perfectly lo-fi 'Cherry Bon Bon. Review: The second release from Alex Egan's Utter sub label Quoth finds a link-up between Pearl River Sound and The Horn - two outlier operators with plenty to say when their machines collide. Pearl River Sound has been scattering outstanding releases on Further, Seagrave and Further Electronix amongst others, while The Horn comes from serious Devon techno heritage having cut his teeth on Evolution back in t'day. This is all about upfront material though, with a tendency towards microtonal braindance that veers from the self-explanatory collaboration 'Modular Grime' to solo forays into off-kilter, acidic electro funk. Nowhere near as derivative as a lot of current braindance, this is real freaked-out electronics for those with discerning taste.

Opener 'Moysiys Strip' is impossible cavernous with its rolling bass and languid chord structures, then 'Tommottos' rolls serenely on frictionless kicks and undulating bass. It's smooth like chocolate and infused with real machine soul. Last but not least, this EP of quite artists and devastating depth comes to a close with 'Limited Value'. Review: Banging electrobass from Spain's Masa Series, mooting six of their roster artists for an incendiary exercise in grit and vibrancy. Having already invited a slew of artists for individual releases, the Cluster series here aims more at collectivity. All the tracks here nail the label's signature smushing of heavily heat-glued sound, moving between everything from electro to breaks, landing somewhere in the synaesthetic register of an earthen sonic purply-brown. The highlight here, though, has to be Anna Kost's 'Conjunction', which breaks this general rule through a fast dubstep-ish 150BPM exploration in nervous respiratory pad design and glance-off percs, making for a bracing potential set intro.

Review: First cropping up in 2012, the mammoth A-Sides series from the titanic Swedish techno label Drumcode charges ahead into its 11th installment (can you believe it?) while also managing to split said installment alone across seven slices of vinyl. This is the fourth record of seven in part eleven. Only gigantic-room techno could justify this waxen audacity; the music is braggadocious to boot, with contributions from Nicolas Taboada, BEC, Avision and Cosmic Boys. The tracks here are as dreamy as they are goosebump-inducing, easily seguing between massive transitions and drops to cathartic reesebound trances.

Review: Impressive debut business from Egyptian producer and DJ Taher, with 'Rival Conga'. Debuting on the nascent and bawdy breakbeat outfit Geeza Records, Taher demonstrates the best of his abilities and agilities here. The fast pace of 'Rival Conga' doesn't just establish a heavy, fun-loving performative and creative attitude, but also nods subtly towards Taher's foothold in the live electronica circuit, through which he performs most of these tracks on the fly. Best of the bunch has to be the weirdo's modu-twiddler 'Pogo Slick', which launches outwards and outstrips the EP's acid midpoint for a tense but still cathartic, chorded uprising.

Review: Blackmarket is a New York party that has always led from the front and been a rare underground haven for threads. The label reflects that similar mindset and here label boss Taimur and long-time Costa Rican friend Artro link up for a four-track techno trip. 'Know Your Friends (Vox)' is a percussive workout with sinewy synths reaching into the cosmos. There is more low-end heft to 'Machina' which is weighty and dubby. A second version of 'Know Your Friends' is surging and metallic and last of all 'Elements' brings a touch of high-speed funk to a techno framework.

Review: Rotterdam techno label TH Tar Hallow is all about providing peak-time techno nourishment. Next to cook up the goods is Augusto Taito who kicks off with the caustic intensity of 'Kanji' which has unsettling bleeps and big rusty drum loops. 'Paradox Of Choice' captures, in techno form, the unresolved anxiety of being lost with infinite options on your Netflix home page then 'O1.2' is a more wispy and roomy blend of dubby low ends and intricate sound designs that trigger your synapses. It's all heavy drums and unrelenting synth loops on closer 'A Sip Of Blood '.

Review: Taken, in case you didn't know, is the duo of former Skudge man Elias Landberg and Nihad Tule. This latest slab of techno follows their previous work in that it is functional but stylish. The drums are analogue, muscular, and perfect to hook on to, and the synths and hi-hats that peel off a rusty, glitchy and slight, but make enough of an impact to cut through. 'Hybrid' is a sleek opener, 'Drumcode' is more dubby and raw and 'Ice Truck' has a more mysterious sense of intergalactic exploration thanks to the sonar-like synths. 'Standard Truck' shuts down with mind-melting and warped synth lines all twisted around one another.

Deep House
Review: You'll struggle to find any deeper or more alluring tracks in Norm Talley's catalogue than 'Powder', the wonderfully hypnotic, locked in and subtly spacey opener from the Motor City producer's 2011 EP on Mixmode, Tracks From The Asylum. It's a good thing, then, that Talley has decided to reissue the sought-after EP on his own label. The Detroiter doesn't put a foot wrong throughout, with the chugging, beatdown-inspired brilliance of 'Lost', which boasts some sublime piano solos, and the up-beat hustle of 'Private Party' being equally as essential as 'Powder'. Speaking of that track, Delano Smith's 'More Powder' version is also worth a listen, featuring as it does slightly bolder synth riffs and a tougher, techno-influenced groove.

Review: After some wicked EPs by Yosh, Etch and Tom Jarmey, here is some proper underground UK flavour courtesy of Burnski's Vivid imprint - a new sub label of Constant Sound. Review: While she's been making moves as a club DJ in recent times, Paula Tape has not released a record since 2021. This EP, whose title doffs a cap to her Chilean roots, is therefore well overdue. It's rather good too, as proven by opener 'Acid Latino (Sonido Real)', where distinctively South American melodies, TB-303 tweaks and echo-laden spoken word snippets rise above a bold acid house bassline, tough beats and layered percussion. 'Feel 2 Real' sees our hero reach for sparkling house pianos, deep bass, sharper acid lines and spacey synths, while 'De2 Locura' is warmer, heavier and more melodically complex. To round off a fine EP, she joins forces with Caravan for the sax-laden South American house excellence of 'Ibis', a track as percussively intense as it is sonically seductive and sub-heavy.

Review: Eindhoven underground acidcore distributor and label Flatlife generate yet another mind-melter for the nitty masses, supercolliding tracks by four of the foremost DJs come sound-summoners on the subterranean scene. Flatlife have dispatched rapid-response rave Apaches since 2009, and A-siders 'Septic' and 'Lord Of Darkness' bring a fittingly mid-noughts feel to things, during which time the roughage of hard dance fused with the encroaching gloss and finesse that came with digital sound tech that defined the decade. The mood is horrific, with 'Saure' climaxing to apocalyptic, territorial levels through waspish yamps and kick crushings, while the aggro is not lost on the ensuing 'Out Of Order', somehow the most relaxed of the four.

Review: Not content with his role as musical director at Frankfurt institution Live At Robert Johnson, Oliver Hafenbauer unveils his new personal label shaped endeavour Die Orakel with a killer 12" from a familiar friend. TCB is the latest production alias of Live At Robert Johnson fixture Christian BeiBwenger and a man who's studio work with Hafenbauer as B.H.F.V. ranks amongst our favourite releases in the LARJ canon. Essentially an acronymic take on The Citizen Band, BeiBwenger's most recent creative concern, TCB aligns snugly with the warm, rich Frankfurt sound on both "Monogamie" and the delightful "Unchained". The latter track is remixed in suitably smudged and lopsided fashion by Leipzig pair Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup, as MM/KM. A great 12" now how about some more B.H.F.V. Oliver?

Review: The word Teakup conjures up a most polite British image of sipping on a warm brew from one's finest china. There is nothing quite so charming about this third EP from the label of that name, however: it is deep and dubby techno to start with as 'Pillar of Light' layers up elastic bass and tightly stacked rums into a high-pressure wedge of body music. 'Interpreter' is a little more busy and frantic with more kinetic drums and squelchy synths while 'Plasma' also locks you in and closer 'Various Round Shapes' is another perfect reduced dub techno concoction with glitchy hits and deft pads all some flair. A tasty EP indeed.

Review: Columbus, Ohio DJ, producer and scene instigator Teakup aka Lauri Reponen is back with another EP that follows in the footsteps of local forefathers such as Titonton Duvante, Archetype and Todd Sines. His music blends perfectly the sounds of UKG, breaks, minimal and techno both past and present. 'Signal 23' is a quick-stepping dub tech cut with clipped and funky drum programming while 'Valve' is more rhythmically loose and playful in its elastic approach. Review: Adam Beyer's Drumcode remains out in front of the pack when it comes to big room techno. Whether going to new school artists or old school legends the results are always the same - epic and explosive. This time out we get both on one EP with Teenage Mutants going first with 'Dark Clouds (feat Heerhorst & Peter Pahn). It has synths fired from a hadron collider as they shoot over the face of the acid and bass-laced drums. Review: To the Fuse Imprint comes Temudo, an extant favourite artist of the Klockworks and Blueprint labels. Described as a leading light of the latest wave of Portuguese techno, Temudo is known as a co-founder of the Hayes Collective; his group-minded sensibility comes to a head here on the new EP 'Meteora', which could easily function to express the inner workings of an alien hive mind. Temudo's designer beats are one of a kind, tracking naturalistic, physically-modelled tones (acid lines on 'Meteora' and 'When I Grow Up' burble like the tuned peckings of an automatic bird's bill). Moments of expansion and constriction propound, as on 'Vrthng', a swung techno number of intimately cheeky space and size, juxtaposing well the massive, reverby openings-out that characterise is predecessor.

Review: Dutch outfit AUM Recordings hook up the profound, nascent arts of relative techno newcomer Teno with the veteran entrancings of Wata Igarashi, whom together lay down this stunning four-tune EP. Naming your techno tracks after beautiful flowers is ironic enough, but to pull off the association convincingly is the real feat. 'Edelweiss', for example, appears not once, but twice, in different forms, and both tracks are the sonic equivalents of inhalation anaesthetics, nearly knocking the listener flat out with oppressively gaseous expository sound design. 'Amaryllis' follows, late-blooming a different, interwoven petal pattern; 'Northpole' concludes, finally, on a maddened note.

Review: Dark, hard techno producer Tensal brings a heathen, cultic mood to the arc of techno orthodoxy with his latest record 'Perpetual Survivor'. With its ominous heraldic symbol on the 12" inner label, and a four-track sonic palette portraying the seedy underbellies of religiosity, this is a record that recalls the Brum-school solemnity of Downwards Records or the post-Catholic heresies of Vatican Shadow. Opener 'Sonic Particle Rain' claps back with a status-quo-shattering barrage of sonic madness by way of 16th-note stutters and squelching lows, while 'Ethos' breaks from the horde with a personal, textural reflection on what it means to follow one's own ethical code. Meanwhile, 'Perpetual Survivor' and 'Nemesis' strip things down to barer bones, amounting to something of a puritan Reformation in sound; the gilded ornamented of their clerical predecessors are contrasted starkly here by the B-side's electric, merciless and sparse sound.

Review: Way back in 2002, in the midst of his rise to global recognition, Ricardo Villalobos delivered a one-off EP for Linear as Termiten - though at the time his involvement was not widely known. It has become something of a sought-after minimal techno classic, with copies of the original 12-inch changing hands for serious sums - hence this Rawax reissue. It remains a fine record. A-side 'Why Did I Love My Wife' is Villalobos at his most propulsive - the kick-drum is pretty sturdy - while still reliably trippy, out-there and intoxicated. 'Nordhorn', a deeper affair in which melancholic melodies seemingly hang in the air over a typically wonky and loose-limbed drum track, is also superb, while 'Frank & Hennes' is a lolloping dab of downtempo psychedelia featuring samples from a heady old folk-rock jam.

Review: Terrace is a guise of Stefan Robbers and there is a sombre sense of end of the world finality to this new EP on Cyphon. 'Territorial' is a dubby electro cut that seems to want to fight for its right to party, while 'Thermon' has a nagging bassline and bittersweet chords that suggest the end is near and resistance is futile. 'Woodward' picks up the pace with some swinging drum funk and muted acid lines that all come with a healthy dose of futurism and 'Ritual' is the most prickly and kinetic rhythm of the lot. Review: Following some sterling bouts from Gunnar Haslam and Bill Westerby, Kavalanic Languages is back with a new grip of deviant dancefloor belters from Elio Terzi. Terzi doesn't appear to have any prior rap sheet, but on the strength of these mutant machine jams we'll be hearing more from them in the future. "Renette" is a bubbling acidic burner that will wriggle under your skin like an uneasy hallucination, while "Lifthia" heads right out into uptempo freak-out territory where only the bravest techno explorers dare to tread. "Coefficients" finishes the EP off with a sizzling cut full of rubbery bass and delightful 606 drums.

Review: Some urgent, foreboding and breathlessly energetic techno here, as Greek producer Thanos Hana makes his first appearance on DJ Maarten Lammers' Pleistoscene Future imprint. There's a lot of swagger to be found on opener 'Het Hoog', where creepy loops and mind-mangling electronics rise above a fiendishly weighty techno groove, while 'Ton Zelf' is a more bass-heavy affair in which nagging melodic motifs strut atop a slamming techno groove. Over on side B, Hana wraps raw and nasty electronic motifs around a jacking techno groove ('Version Seven'), before dousing densely layered beats and bass in trippy textures and hypnotic loops on 'The Drums'.

He has over 30 years of experience and his latest dub techno outing, Subduction & Shadows, is up there with the best of them. The first side features 'Subduction,' a vibrant track with uptempo dub techno beats perfect for the dancefloor while 'Glow' on the flip enchants with Detroit-inspired '90s chords and refined production enhanced by epic strings for a hypnotic touch. Review: Pretty much all Drumcode releases are colossal and anthem-like - it's the imprint's niche, after all - but this two-tracker from Stockholm stalwart Tiger Stripes is particularly sizeable. A-side 'Nocturne', for example, is as driving, mind-altering and breathless as they come, with Hardfloor style acid motifs, twinkling piano breakdowns, trancey riffs and enveloping aural textures rising above a blisteringly tough and intense beat. Review: BOY Records reissue an early example of legit new beat robo-trance, Time Modem's 'Welcome To The 90s'. The German duo of Joachim and Ulrich Wilhelm first dropped this deathly cold, wan emotion-stripper under the ZYX Music subsidiary shortly following 'The Time Of The Gathering', their debut EP. 'Welcome To The 90s' proves it: most of the cultural collective mind who experienced the transition into the last decade of the Millennium knew ahead of time that this would be the decade that defined dance music. Just one look at the waveform of this future-gothic grinder - as thin as a too-savoured fishbone sucked dry - reflects the loss of affect that was to be expected of this new bionic-sonic era. We hear a faint robotic voice over the title track's tannoy, speaking on themes of deterioration, futility and renunciation; it glides above the track's unpassable early stab lines and end-stop stomps. 'Intensive Worlds', meanwhile, extends the Gregorian voxsynth to underlie a rather flat, detached description of a future Frankfurt street scene, narrated by a female interloper. A historic slab of wax, reproduced for a new age.

It comes with a conceptual back story that says in 2045, MindTech researchers discovered a phenomenon in neural networks called "Phantom Scripts." Review: Tom Wax has been knocking out high quality tunes at a high rate of knots for many years on all manner of influential labels. This time out he steps up with a one-sided and banging 12" for Plastic City in the same month that a bunch of remixes of the same single also appear. The original is all gurgle acid lines, yelping vocals and pure rave-techno energy. The arrangement fizzes and spits and is overloaded with lo-fi fuzz which only adds to the sense of rush as you get lost in the beats. A devastating cut for sure.

Enter Toribio with a superb four track EP of just that to get this new imprint underway. Review: The Hessle Audio label celebrated a big birthday in style recently and rightly so. It has long been a pioneering outlet for always cutting-edge electronic sounds loosely couched in bass music but often involving so much more. This latest comes from Toumba who made a fine outing at the end of last year and starts 2023 on just as solid a footing. Review: Back in 2021 Italian hard techno producer Mattia Trani released his standout Scenery LP on his own label, Pushmaster Discs. Two years on, he's amassed a frankly staggering cast of remixers to cast their spells over his original tracks, compiled on two separate volumes. After the likes of Hood, Ishii, Slater and Dettmann performed their rites on part one, now it's the turn of some breakthrough names you'll be wanting to take note of. Review: Madrid's Semantica Records share the second of two label releases by the producer Translate aka. Teo Pellegrino, the former being the 'Vanishing Figures' LP released in 2022. Unlike that album, 'Untitled' comes as a more palliative six-track pounder, mixing six furtive, generative trax; this is music for spaceship hulls left on cruise and standby. The tracks sound like apprehensive stumbles through the many access tunnels of a cosmic freighter; we're half-asleep, and all our crewmates are in stasis. 'Forward', 'Area' and 'Hoax' are variantly pulsatory and strained but smooth, mostly peppered by the odd bleep or presssure release here and there; 'SD Decrement', 'Interchange' and 'The Gathering' develop this mood further, the final track offering the earbuds a special twinkly aftertaste, one not unbefitting of both DJ set intros and endings.

Review: Steve Poindexter and Traxman's Factory Music Chicago imprint has been around for a while, though releases have historically been occasional rather than regular. This split EP, featuring three acid-fired jackers apiece from Traxman and Slick Rick Da Master, is only the label's fifth vinyl outing - and fifth in total. Its latest is a four tracker that serves as a taster of a forthcoming digital album by Trois-Quarts Taxi System. Behind the moniker is Eloi Petillon, a versatile producer, DJ and live act who has a knack for blurring genre lines. On this one, they mix up elements of dubstep, techno and d&b into soundscapes that are cerebral, hypnotic and psychedelic. Each one is made from futuristic sound design, field recordings and intricate polyrhythms: 'Metamorphism' warped, linear, deft and brilliant deep techno. 'Coma' is more busy, 'Fraction' has wispy synths and a sparse soundscape and 'Spectre' is a fizzy, skeletal sound that tickles the brain.

'The Drill' follows the same Blueprint of early '90s Birmingham industrial in the vein of Downwards and Dynamic Tension, while 'The Hammer' follows in suit but with the addition of Robert Hood's style of cyclicality: steely hi-hat workouts and claps on the kick. Review: White label lover Truncate (AKA long-serving techno producer David Flores) is back with more "no frills hard grooves, crafted for the dancefloor". This time it's all about "Machine Jack", a track served in two distinct flavours of analogue-driven intensity. First up is "Machine Jack V1", where one-note stabs, Belgian hardcore "Hoover" noises and simple, mind-altering melodies slowly rise above a pounding techno groove. "Machine Jack V2" is equally as intense, with twisted, acid-style electronic motifs dancing above another ten-ton beat. In comparison, surprisingly tropical B-side "Missing" is rather laidback and melodious. It's still savage and floor-friendly, but boasts a rather cheery synthesizer melody and some blissful electronic touches throughout.

Review: TWR72 is a Dutch techno mainstay who here debuts on the Spanish label Room. His Narrow EP is a powerful dance floor sucker punch with a remix from the up-and-coming Mathys Lenne that shows he is an artist with a textural take on tunneling techno. The original tunes include 'Narrow' which is all hulking great kicks and bleeping synth pulses. 'Generous' then ups the ante with quick and slick Mills style minimalism and 'Exact' rounds out with a hunched-over groove that leans into a stiff wind as howling synths swirl around and the tension continues to grow. Review: Manchester's Tys is back on the Simpler Times label he runs with Archie Gray, Tay and David with his third EP of cinematic, crisply rendered techno melancholy. If you're into the likes of Jon Hopkins and Four Tet you'll find much to savour in Tys' sound, dealing as it does in lingering emotive composition as the primary focus. There are plenty of deft drums driving the tracks along, but this is delicate music aimed squarely at the heartstrings, whether it's the endearing warble of the lead synth on 'Prism' or the sweetly spiralling shuffle of 'Antalya' you find yourself blissing out to.

Review: Missile Vintage deploys a sixth sizzling techno weapon here and it comes from the studio of Damon Wild and Tim Taylor who combine in electric fashion. 'Band The Acid' really does that. Review: FSOL continue to be a prolific force in the sonic universe of their own making. The Environments series they started in 2007 has come to a head with a trio of albums over the past year and this is the last of them. Review: Legendary German experimental label Mille Plateaux is back this week, with a fascinating album by Melody Tomb which is a collaboration between Tokyo artist Teruyuki Kurihara and London drone pop band The Leaf Library. Story has it that back in March 2020, The Leaf Library sent Kurihara some material to play with, in the hope that a collaboration would be born. He was indeed receptive, resulting firstly in the track 'Kite Beach' which was featured on the band's Objects Forever compilation in 2021, with the rest of the album slowly appearing over the next year that takes in drone, soundscapes, minimal techno and industrial noise throughout its eight tracks. The artists hope to continue the collaboration with another album in the near future.

Review: Born and raised in Bern, Switzerland, Michael Antener spent most of the 1980s concerned with interpreting the subconsciously and overtly apocalyptic discourse of that time through the medium of industrial-edged, dark feeling music. "I found a niche where I could express myself, along with other people who were not afraid of dark themes," he's quoted as saying in retrospect, before going on to explain that singing about love would have been more difficult than using "cries of pain taken from horror movies". This triple vinyl collector's item celebrates that fertile, if angry and dystopian period in Antener's life. Bringing together work from two of his formative projects, The Stranger of the Swamp and Bande Berne Crematoire, what's here is captivating. Electroclash with groove, distressed collages of noise, a certain sense of sonic expressionism - all brooding shadows, menacing arrangements and deeply unsettling moods.

Review: Following a couple of decent but arguably overlooked 12" singles, Tecwaa has decided the time is right to drop his debut album. The Swedish artist proceeds to languidly shuffle through evocative, occasionally icy tracks that variously draw influence from deep house, 1980s wave music, spiritual jazz, leftfield synth-pop, trippy electronica and chugging psychedelic disco. It's an interesting and entertaining set, with each success delay-laden track delivering a new twist on his hard-to-pigeonhole late night/early morning sound. By the time the bubbly, acid flecked "Those Cosmic Plains" rounds the album off, you'll be ready to listen to it all over again.

Review: When you look back at the first PlayStation several landmark releases spring to mind - Resident Evil, Tekken 2, Crash Bandicoot - the list could go on much longer and should definitely include Wipeout and Wipeout 2097. Both were renowned for combining high pace, futuristic visuals with contemporary electronic club music from some of the biggest producers and acts at the time. Less remembered, in Europe at least, is the Ape Escape series, an intense party-platform title which arguably has the greatest dance music game score of all time. Comprising six tracks from that saga, this compilation of Soichi Terada's soundtracks emphasises that bold point. Opening on the crisp, punchy techno drive of 'Specters Factory', we find ourselves in suitably spooky jungle ('Haunted House'), rumbling dnb ('Spectors Castle') and roughneck hardcore bass ('Coasters'), among other made up genres. A collection which resembles Terada's amazing 1996 album, Sumo Jungle and makes a case for the Japanese enigma as one of dance music's most underrated geniuses.

Review: HudMo is on rampant form at the moment, firing off collaborations left, right and centre and, as usual, never missing. That said, this project feels like something very special indeed, as he doubles down on kinship with Canadian techno legend Tiga to make an album in thrall to the surge of feelings that hit us when we submit to the possibilities of the night. Review: Immortal Ventures is a magnificently well-rounded new album from Torn on the mighty Samurai Music. All 13 of the cuts are fantastically well crafted and mix up a range of moods from broody and mediative to deep and hypnotic. 'Knowledge' kicks off with dark and unsettling ambience and 'Reckless' then melts the mind with deft percussive loops over groaning sounds of a depraved underworld. There is more cinematic atmosphere to 'Invisible Turmoil' with its creepy sense of open space and 'Inner Battle' is a kinetic jungle cut with thunderous energy and dystopian eeriness. This is the sort of music that works as well away from the club as it does in it.

Review: After an incredible inauguration by legend Robert Armani, the second release on Techno Parade Vinyl comes from rising Chinese techno producer TPMP. The Chengdu-based arranger, mixer, mastering engineer and Eurorack modular designer presents eight original tracks on his debut vinyl album, with an extensive selection of remixes by some of the scene's biggest names such as the aforementioned Armani, Samuel L. Session and Waffensupermarkt. Style wise, TPMP goes for that greyscale dub techno sound, counting the likes of Basic Channel and Echospace as influences. Whether it's the locomotive minimalism of 'White Point', the cavernous and glacial body bash of "Gray Point" or the deconstructed EBM of "White Line" - Hardester High Frequency proves that TPMP is one to watch!

Review: Of all the many Drexciya-related projects, Transllusion is surely one of the finest. Coming in the twilight years of James Stinson's life, there's a bittersweet quality to Opening Of The Cerebral Gate but it doesn't hold the force of the music back. From 'Transmission Of Life's searing arps to the nasty machine funk of 'Negative Flash', this is Stinson running at full clip, speaking that innate Drexciyan language through the machines in a manner which has been oft imitated but never even remotely matched. Reissued by Tresor in 2014 with a bonus 12", now it's presented with a fresh sleeve design which evokes the cyberpunk mood of the music in fine style.
