Review: Detroit Stories is, first and foremost, the name of a recent social experiment in Motor City, USA. Largely broadcast on social media like Instagram, it consists of interviews with OG residents and immigrants from way back - the ones who've lived through the city's many ups and downs - we hear got stories of good times, hard work, and opportunities, but also struggles, violence, and social upheavals, all of which helped shaped Detroit's rise and slow fall. Secondly but not least, 'Detroit Stories' is also the name of Daughters And Sons' (Luca Fronza's) latest EP, which plunges the sampleable depths of these interviews to effuse a deep and inexorable sense of the city's cultural significance, not only as the heartland of Fordism (the dominant ideology in whose shadow even humble music reviewers like ourselves live), but also the place, where, without coincidence, techno originated. Coming with a remix by Prins Thomas, star track 'Gipsy' is especially well-suited to the city's obverse mood, combining the glitz of industrial opportunism, a Detroit-endemic Christian religiosity, and a nomadic core theme, all via ploddingly militant beats and a twinging lead synth whistle.

Review: Brussels-based DJ and producer Diego Cortez Salas has made some slick moves in the last year or so. He has found himself on quality labels like Live At Robert Johnson, Pets Recordings and Slowciety, and rightly so because his take on house is full of colour and character. Now he lands on Bristol bastion Futureboogie with a more cosmic take that launches with the crystalline leads of 'The Weight Of Uncertainty. 'Gliding Future' is a more frazzled interplanetary sound and the great I:Cube then flips the opener into a deep space and widescreen house roller before 'They Don't See It' closes with a prickly, gurgling techno-disco beat.

Review: The Belgian label Higher Hopes is run by DC Salas who now returns to it with a new EP with the collaborative Los NiNos Del Parque project alongside Anthony Barbarich aka Mirror Minds. They say it is a release that has been 15 years in the making and has roots in their shared love of 2000s electroclash, plus new wave and new beat. They set out to make something inspired by that and have done so over the last four years with a mix of rugged and mechanical rhythms and angular synth lines. A fine remix by the assured Badaboum and Rinse France resident Belaria rounds out the package.

Review: Is it Balearic drop a 10' slice of acid house perfection from one of the true masters of the genre in 'Foolish' Felix Dickinson! "Ousana" grows slowly over a driving house beat as warm synth pads and synth leads take the track along nicely with a subtle acid line until the bassline drops. A vocal refrain joins the groove seductively cooing 'I want to take you home' over the acid layers that develop in deeply hypnotic fashion. Straight into the basement. On the flip Coyote take the tempo down, bring out the percussion and create a Balearic acid stomper. Bleeps dubbed out vocals all swirl around the percussive rhythms then the acid line drops subtle and reminiscent of a certain acid house classic. Early doors or at the beach bar for this mix.

Review: Athens-based label Ethos is looking to build on the good start it made with its first two outings with a third raw and direct EP. DimDJ is a legend in Greece and has been since the 90s when he first began making his mark. His sound is not all about nostalgia though - he opens his Welcome To This World EP with 'This Little Face' which is a deep house reverie with painterly pads smeared over dusty drums. Nice analogue textures make it all the more lived in and a Beatless version strips away everything but the suspensory synths. 'Welcome To This World is another lo-fi and crackly deep house meditation and 'Hyper Tonic' flips the script with some undulating acid lines, more light synth work and hissing hi-hats.

Review: Whoever is behind the Discotecas series has certainly got access to some seriously good re-edits. As with its predecessors, volume six in the series lands with no info about the identity of the editor (or editors) involved. Whoever it is, they've done a bang-up job - as inspired opener 'Perceptive', a deliciously dubby and spaced-out take on a hybrid electro/proto-house gem from the mid 1980s, proves. The retro-futurist fun continues on 'Kazbah', a fine revision of a brilliantly odd, breakbeat-fuelled Arabic acid record, while flip-side opener 'Bass Instinct' sits somewhere between bleep & breaks and early speed garage. Closing cut 'Ask a Dream' is arguably the best cut of all: a sublime slab of saucer-eyed early deep house of the kind that should probably be listened to as the sun comes up.

Review: It's a bold move to call your EP The Spirit of Ibiza when so many different people have so many wildly different views on just what that might sound like. The second release on the Balearia label makes a good crack at it though with sunset house vibes, lush percussion and plenty of tropical feels. The DJ Fede original is a rolling, tom-peppered groove with bird calls and balmy pads all transporting you straight to the med. Adding real authenticity is the Balearic master Don Carlos with a remix that cops up the groove to make for something more funky but just as humid and sun baked. Massimino Lippoli then pairs things back to a late night Ibiza vibe, with a rugged baseline overlaid with a sprinkling of hippie hand drums.

Review: DJ Fede has our minds turning to warmer climates, longer days and sun-kissed parties not only with the artwork but also the sounds of his new 12" on Balearia. 'Santa Eularia Des Riu' is the one original single and is a delightfully deep, dreamy sound with muted sax lines up top, chords that ripple and melt away and organic percussion that brings that 70s hint of Ibiza hedonism. A Midnight dub mix ups the pace only slightly, then the Jovonn Forest remix brings a subtle deep house dynamism to proceedings before the Atmospheric Sunset version cuts utterly loose and lays back gazing up at the flame-red sky.

They offer up three different versions of 'Para Siempre' that are all suited to sunset sessions on the beach. The tune features Florencia and first comes as an Italo Balearic vocal mix which is doused in lush synths and has steady bass rumbles below the rich chords. The Elements Of Trance mix is perfect for when things head indoors to the club with its weighty low-end thud then the most trippy and loved-up version comes at the end.

Review: Cottam's Ruff Draft label makes a logical move and turns to a long-serving champion of gritty, soul-powered house jams from the tough side. DJ Nature may have made his name many moons ago, but he proves to be as relevant as ever on this killer two-track release. "Alfred" is a tightly wound box jam that manages to maintain tension throughout without needing to pander to the release part of the process, sounding all the more exciting for it. "Blood On Your Hands" meanwhile finds Nature heading into the scuffed, soul-sampling territory he's most at home in, and the ensuing rumble of off-key funk is impossible to refute.

Review: We're always here for DJ Nature's peerless approach to house music with all the Black roots intact, and that goes for his edits, too. It wasn't long ago he gifted us some next-level re-rubs on Versions (Part One) for Hot Biscuit, and now he's at it again with this four-track, double 12" package for Smoke & Mirrors. The Nature sound is in full effect, not least on the smouldering, daybreak haze of 'Walking In The Rain', while 'Nobu' does an incredible job of gently nudging Herbie Hancock's groundbreaking electronic jazz fusion down in pitch to make it fit a groovier, head-nodding context.

Review: While hardly a "Holy Grail"all bar a few people didn't know it existed until recently, D.J Never Sleep's sole single, the private press gem 'Teorema', can certainly be described as "buried treasure". It was reportedly the work of some experienced Italian producers, though its' sound is all Spanish guitar solos, early house-meets-Latin freestyle beats, joyous Piano riffs and evocative female vocals, it is pure formative Balearic house. This Thank You reissue not only showcases the original EP's two leading mixes (track two here, the more chugging and synth bass-sporting rework, is the pick), but also a never-released, effects-laden 'Never Sleepy Beats' drum took, plus versions in Spanish (B1) and French (B2).

Review: On his Pont Neuf label debut, DJ Psychiatre - a rising star of the French electronic underground who recently released a fine EP on Shall Not Fade - invites us to Enter The Chillzone. The title offers more than a hint of what's inside, as while there are plenty of club-ready moments, the whole thing is heady, loved-up, laidback, atmospheric and melody-rich. For proof, check the lilting lead lines, simmering chords, bubbly acid motifs and shuffling house beats of 'Simple as Fast', the Global Communication-influenced wonder of 'Don't F**k With My Groove' and the string-laden, sunrise-ready warmth of 'Rhythm Is Key'. Elsewhere, 'A Little Treat' is a jazzy trip-hop number smothered in tactile deep house synths, and 'Deep Water' is a luscious downtempo cut of the sort you might have heard in the late 1990s.

Review: B2 Recordings hits release number 13 with DJ Rocca and Lex combing on a trio of fresh house cuts that blend elements of disco, Latin and soul. Up first is the glorious 'Solid Street' which has loose and percussive disco-house grooves overlaid with big synth energy and steamy vocals. 'Solar System' is slower and deeper, with a more rugged bassline and low slung sense of funk that never lets up. 'Last of all, 'Rose Tree' is a ramshackle house arrangement with whistles, Rhodes keys, tin-pot percussion, florid flutes and plenty of sunny energy all making it a real standout. A timeless EP packed with musicality.

Review: Two years on from his last outing under the DJ Snils alias, Oleg Buyanov AKA Ol buddies up with pal Every Korner (real name Roman Erikona) to help launch the Save the Books label. The Moscow-based pair apparently recorded the four tracks at various points over the last few years. There's an undeniably Balearic feel to proceedings throughout, from the dreamy pads, twittering loon bird samples and new age ambient melodies of 'Intro', to the jazz-flecked Italian dream house drowsiness of luscious and life-affirming closing cut 'Sector 100'. In between you'll find the bustling 'Take Money', where sampled piano motifs and huggable chords ride a chunky, bass-heavy groove, and the sunny broken beat/jazz-funk/deep house fusion of 'Black Box Riddle'.

Stretched out across two slabs of wax you'll find dreamy, jungle-influenced deepness ("World A", "For Real For You"), cosmic dub ("Stellar Clusters", "Ascension"), spacey ambient techno ('Entry Mode"), Motor City influenced positivity ("Parallax") and Boards of Canada style loveliness ("Reluctant Memory"). Predictably, it's all superbly produced, with the material proudly sitting in the no man's land between club-ready rollers and horizontal home listening fare.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: an unlikely collaboration between celebrated Italian producer DJ Tennis and Fink, one of the longest-serving members of the extended Ninja Tune family. The latter's melancholic, heartfelt vocals are a perfect foil for Tennis's gentle and melodious backing track, which layers bubbling electronics, simmering orchestration and twinkling synthesizer motifs atop a sparse, undulating drum machine groove. If we had to tightly define it, we'd call it lilting outsider pop. On the flip you'll find the "Club Mix", which wraps Fink's vocal and cascading pianos around a tactile, soft touch house groove.

Review: Over the years, DK has been responsible for some of Antinote's most ear-pleasing moments. Even so, we can't think of many as breathtaking as "Keyboard Study", the Steve Reich-with-synthesizers track that kicks off Distant Images, his fourth vinyl excursion for Zaltan's lauded imprint. It superbly sets the tone for what follows: a stunning selection of synthesizer-heavy soundscapes variously inspired by American minimalism, Greek new age ambient and Vangelis's widescreen electronic soundtracks. It's the sort of record that sounds like it could have been made in the early '80s and reissued by Music From Memory, only better (and that's saying something).

Review: After introducing Japanese artist Inoue Shirabe on their last release, Paris label Antinote return to sourcing music from closer to home with Love on Delivery a new 12" from the excellent D.K. Last year's Drop long player from D.K. was one a highlight amongst highlights in the Antinote release schedule so we have been eagerly awaiting new material from the man. Of course since then the producer has also introduced the 45 ACP project for Dog In The Night, a sort of chaotic and unpredictable Hyde to the smoother gliding Jekyll that is D.K. He's certainly on star gazing form with the quartet of cuts here which truly live up to their sensual titles and then some! The wonderfully enveloping "Marimba Theme" is a real highlight but the whole record will delight the new age loving warm up DJs out there!

This is tasteful deep house in the vein of labels like Downbeat and Sistrum - all machine soul seekers take note.

'Dis Oui!' by JT Donaldson is a low-slung house groove that explores a unique and catchy melodic chord structure. Featuring beautiful and elegant vocals from Penelope Antena, this is sure to be a favorite by everyone who plays and hears it. JT cleverly edits the vocals into a symphony sprinkling the song with magic. For the second side, Dolfin regular Ben Hixon, gets the remix duty. He turns the track into a dubby builder that explores perfectly placed portions of the vocal onto a tribal bed of rhythms. A perfect alternate version that is so smooth it hurts. A lot of playability for one little 7".

Review: In Waves continue their deep-sea abyssal theme with Draso's latest EP 'The Moment Is Forever', which captures the perceived timelessness of life's most euphoric moments. Harmony and wholesomeness over discordancy is paramount to this music's vision. 'Hygge', the not-completely-translatable Dutch word meaning something adjacent to "homely warmth", opens the EP in shuffly, twinkly, wondrous tech house form. It is their version of Son of Abe's 'Mr Frosty' that opens up with some psychedelic synths worming their way through rolling beats as acid lines bring texture. Q3's 'NJB' (vs dub Fu Masters) has a filthyTwo Lone Swordsman style bassline underlining snappy drum hits while a sultry sax line also comes in to make for a tight, original sound. Dub Fu Masters then shut down with 'Herb Was Created' which is a menacing and low-slung dub cut with plenty of reverb and another dirty and brilliant bassline.

This time the Spanish deep house maestro is helping launch First Floor with an original jam that revels in a blanket of fog. "So Far" is the deepest of house jams, rolling along slowly and smoky without losing its presence, thanks in no small part to the soulful croon of the unnamed vocalist. Leo Gunn then steps up for the B-side, remixing "So Far" into a sprightly terrace anthem replete with snappy piano chords to warm your cockles, but fear not because that all-encompassing Dubbyman vibe persists throughout this release.

Though Poseidon has thrusted his trident at us here, there's actually a fourth track/prong on this tenth edition in the Dutch label's V/A catalogue, adding extra implosive impact to an already power-packed depth charge. Standouts here, in our estimation, have to be the faster currents of the bunch, taking shape as Tifra's 'Headspace' - whose breath-of-life melodic sequencings and CPAP pads allow us mammals a moment to come up for air - and DJ Life's 'Carapax' - whose gnatty lead buzz is like a desiccant for contaminant waters.

Review: After two long years, Dailysession has decided to reboot its popular DSR House EP series. As with its' three predecessors, volume four is a split affair. Montreal-based Jonattan Levingstone, co-founder of Parages Music, handles side A, first delivering a deep, immersive, dubby and space-heavy epic (the soft-touch, sunrise-ready hypnotism of 'Licorella') before doffing a cap to Japanese great Sprinkes and Italian ambient house of old on the gorgeous and enveloping 'Nufsaid'. Review: Rocksteady Disco welcomes Dennis Liber & Lex for a standout debut here. Their four-tracker captures the magic of musical nights spent down in Mexican hotspot Tulum with organic and airy grooves aplenty. After a slight hiatus, the imprint is back, and is here joined by a slew of underground talent, coming together as one for a combinative set of 'Rhythm Rituals'. Surprisingly for a set of rituals, the three A-siders proffer three wordless mudras (as opposed to incanted mantras), with Mtty's 'Ahhhhh!cid' laying down a two-stepping breaks dust-storm replete with bells, ufologic risers and ectoplasmic synth flatulences; and Pocket's 'Smoke Signals' imparting the ways of long-distance telegraphy by way of a deeper four-wheel drive, with indo-Australian chants sampled therein. B-side helmers DJ Relax and Local Support offer two contradistinct Balearic beats, the former track veering more chuggy and auto-suspensive, in contrast to the latter's emotive, e-organic builds and vox gates.

Review: Given the success of their other releases, it's hard to believe that the 2 Hearts EP is only the fifth release from Austria's Luv Shack label. It features four collaborations between Lee Stevens and various other Luv Shack luminaries, all of which fit into the label's sweet, touchy-feely deep house template. Proceedings commence with "Luv Sick", a hook-up between Stevens and LeSale that is positively Balearic in its feel good outlook, while "Find A Girl" (co-produced by Jakobin) takes a woozier, fuller approach, all drowsy chords and filter-heavy grooves. Flip over and "Deep Inside"- done in cahoots with the brilliantly named Simonlebon - recalls classic US deep house of old - all analogue percussion and booming 909 boss - while "Be Yourself" casually drifts between the speakers on a warming wave of nu-disco synths and Balearic chords.

Review: Indulging his more restrained, darewesay mellow side, Vakula is back at Leleka with Dusty Baron in tow for a healthy spread of soul-drenched house cuts heavy on the real-deal funk ingredients and low on the electronics across two mighty slabs of vinyl. Dusty Baron's "Accidental Shot" is particularly ear-snagging with the gorgeous filtered live bass flexing and jazzed out keys, while its counterpart "Follow Shot" cools things right down with a blissful flute and piano arrangement built for the most luxuriant lounge you could imagine. Review: John Digweed doesn't do things by halves. Most of his mixed compilations tend towards the epic, and Quattro 2 - a sequel to 2020's Quattro- is no exception. It features three discs of new, unreleased and exclusive music mixed by Digweed, each of which has its own loose theme. Disc one, Soundscape, concentrates on immersive and meditating sounds, with disc two - Tempo - delivering warm-up style goodness and disc three, Redux, peak-time house and breaks in Digweed's distinctively melodious style. The collection's fourth CD, meanwhile, is a brand-new ambient and electronica album from Robert Babicz. Like the rest of the collection, it's really rather good.

Review: On one level, this debut album from Berlin-based singer/songwriter Dillon is a curious choice of release for BPitch Control, a label better known for its dancefloor-flavoured output. Yet in many ways, it makes perfect sense. Dillon's songs and vocal style suggest indie - or, at least, the out-there oddness of Kate Bush - yet This Science Kills is not a straight-up indie album. Sure, her sound is sharply focused on both her distinctive voice and loose, freeform piano playing, but the production boasts enough interesting electronic touches and low-end pulses to prick the ears of all but the most militant techno heads (see the leftfield dancefloor pomp of closer "Abrupt Clarity").

Importantly it is steeped in emotion with each of the well crafted sounds hitting a perfect sweet spot. Core to this is the artist's ability to craft perfect loops that can roll for days and never grate. "He doesn't like to think in categories," says the press text. "By reinterpreting genre-specific elements, discovering unheard soundscapes and with a good portion of nostalgia, he sculpts little stories that vibe on dance floors and in living rooms alike." The Beat By DJ Spun Volume 1 does a great job of highlighting largely lesser-known, breakbeat-powered cuts produced in the city between 1988 and '94. Review: Since launching in 2012, Parisian imprint Antinote has released some notable records, from the tropical pagan darkness of Albinos' Ritual House series, to the sumptuous soft rock and leftfield disco blends of Syracuse. Here, they delve into deeper, dreamier pastures with a wonderfully fluid and melodious collection of new age house and glassy-eyed Balearica from the previously little-known DK. It's a smorgasbord of drum driven sounds from trip hop to dub, acid house to broken beats all lathered in plenty of cinematic ambience and vibes-late night feels. The seven tracks all develop sounds he has explored on previous releases under the aliases snacs and VOSE 106. Right from the majestic opener 'Three Times' this is late night music when space and time bends and edges are blurred. 'Soft Tissue' is a stuttering broken beat thank gets you lost in dub wise reverb and 'Viewing Space' is all neon synths and day-go keys. Lovely.
