Asphalt DJ - "Blades" (6:40)
RDS - "TH Only" (5:39)
Ste Roberts - "Tune Pitch Decay" (7:51)
Tammo Hesselink - "Untitled 42" (5:10)
Review: Some of Europe's finest purveyors of underground sounds come together on this fourth rase from the One Eye Witness label out of the Netherlands. Asphalt DJ kicks off and lays out a steamroller of a techno banger in 'Blades' which is pulsing, hard hitting but supple. RDS gets for a much more minimal and cosmic vibe on the tight and bouncy 'TH Only' then Ste Roberts brings some machismo and texture to 'Tune Pitch Decay' with its industrial tech aesthetic. Tammo Hesselink closes down the EP with the loose and bendy tones, scattered hits and late night minimal eeriness of 'Untitled 42.'

B-STOCK: Record slightly warped
Leon Carson - "China Trax"
Theo Parrish - "Insane Asylum"
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record slightly warped***

Oh yes, we love it when Theo represses some of his most sought after tracks and this one is particularly well-timed. Leron Carson is still an unknown figure, a kid who used to make viciously raw and futuristic techno tracks in the late 1980's! "China Trax", alongside the rest of his tracks on a different Sound Signature double 12", is totally ahead of its time and if it was truly made in 1987 then it is nothing short of amazing. Of course, it's not just the year it was made in that's interesting but also the fact that it's music without an age, able to be appreciated by any generation of techno freaks. Theo's own "Insane Asylum" on the flipside is also pretty monumental; rigged beats, off-kilter grooves and that familiar spontaneity so heavily associated to the label.

Cat: LLC 06. Rel: 30 Nov 22
Saverio Celestri - "Sundays" (4:41)
Delta - "Crachats De Lune" (6:57)
Prince De Takicardie - "Jam'on'acid" (House mix) (7:49)
Tundramane - "Brick To The Face" (feat Koste) (1:56)
Solar Alliance - "Quest For Kiba" (7:55)
Shampoo - "Track 6" (8:10)
Review: Qir's Lowlife Cartel label has been offering up sinuous strains of techno and electro since 2017, focusing on VA releases to keep the scope of the label broad, and preferring to focus on loose themes for each record. This time around, Kodoku opens up with Saverio Celestri's bubbling acid-electro before Delta and Prince De Takicardie plunge into wondrous sci-fi excursions for those who like their techno springy, supple and downright freaky. There's some distinctly different sounds on the B-side, as Koste spits and snarls over 'Brick To The Face' by Tundramane. Solar Alliance take things in a more cosmic, trance-minded direction, and Shampoo finish proceedings off with a curious slice of mournful breakbeat synth pop, if you can imagine such a combo.

Cinthie - "Palm Trees In Wedding" (6:31)
The Willers Brothers - "Goes On & On" (7:11)
The Willers Brothers - "Don't Slip" (7:01)
Review: Since the We_r House label appears to be jointly run by Berliners the Willers Brothers and Cinthie, it seems fitting that both artists make telling contributions to the imrpint's second 12". Cinthie handles side A, serving up both the early Morning Detroit techno hypnotism of "Control" and the chunky and tactile, U.S style deep house bump of "Palm Trees in Wedding". The Willers Brothers' "Goes On and On" offers a return to the locked-in dancefloor hypnotism that marks out Cinthie's EP opener, albeit with a few more dreamy melodic elements to entice the deep house heads, before those tuneful, warm and atmospheric vibes are further explored on the skipping New Jersey vibes of closer "Don't Slip".

Dea - "Phoroma" (4:28)
Iro Aka - "Void Index" (6:23)
Too Smooth Christ - "Avais Mariah" (6:16)
Volta Cab - "Titanium Stresser" (4:34)
Review: Mirko Hecktor and Tom Sprenger founded Terra Magica in 2021 as a platform for their brand of psychedelically-charged house and techno, and they've quickly built up a strong identity and a burgeoning community of likeminded astral travellers. Look no further than this quality split release for all the proof you need, as Lucas Croon threads Balearic, prog and trance together before the label bosses (Hektisch Sprengen DJs) weave some mystical mantras of their own and Dea revels in boxy Chicago jack crossed with Island boogie. It's an eclectic mix to be sure, with another three joints taking in uptempo proto-trance and anthemic emo-acid-breaks aplenty. Draw for the big feelings and get freaky in the process - what's not to love?

Dawl - "Cyborg" (6:25)
Tristan Da Cunha - "Move (Let Me See U)" (5:40)
Freakenstein - "Feakin' Time (+ Freak-A-Pella)" (7:24)
Review: Leeds-born session Hearlucinate makes the leap to wax with a special series of 12"s that correspond to line-ups for parties in London, spearheaded by resident Tristan da Cunha. On this first release, Dawl shores up on the A side and sets the bar very high indeed with the killer bleep techno stylings of "Energy Overdrive" and the tough, punchy electro of "Cyborg". Da Cunha himself follows up on the B side with the equally tough and thumping "Move (Let Me See U)", a seedy and sensual peak timer if we ever heard one. Freakenstein completes the set with a rabble-rousing booty bass beat down that will appeal to those who likes their electro fast and nasty.

Chicago Skyway - "Edged Out" (6:04)
Review: Perpetual Rhythms is already well-regarded as a bastion of quality amongst contemporary Chicago house labels, and now they've downright sealed the deal with this mammoth compilation from a stellar cast of local cats. There's too many to all list in detail here, so focusing on the highlights, Dcee leads things in with the tumbling cosmic jazz leanings of "Suavecito," Hakim Murphy teases with a spacious and daring exploration in the liminal zone between ambient and house, and Obsolete Music Technology gets invigorating with the bouncy "High Top Fade." Those tracks alone are enough to deserve your hard earned, but there's reams of other excellent forward-facing Windy City jams to sink your teeth into.

Die Roh - "Coming Out" (6:25)
Trudge - "Give" (6:23)
Die Roh - "Her First Time" (5:51)
Trudge - "Series 7" (4:20)
Review: Italy's Die Roh have come a long way since their first release for Vae Victis back in 2012 alongside Blawan, releasing plenty of militant house and techno with a rugged, analogue feel that sits just right with us. They're up on Axe Traxx this time for the label's second outing, and they're joined by newcomer Trudge. The former delivers a deep, lean deep house chugger in "Coming Out", relatively more docile than their previous material but it's still cut-throat enough to sound booming on a system and provoke a series of bodies to start moving thanks, in part, to its kinetic percussion rhythm and sublime keys. Trudge come through with "Give", a sludgy house monster with a brittle drum flex and banging toms built for destructive DJ use. On the flip of the wax plate, Die Roh are back with the funkier, more uplifting house bullet "Her First Time", but "Series 7" by Trudge is the killer on here, the shadiest house tune of them all that reminds us of Greg Beato at his very best. This is one hell of a tip - don't miss it.

Knocked Out (9:17)
Review: The hardest working duo in electronic music are back - Parisians DJ Deep and Romain Poncet (aka Traumer) putting on hold multiple solo and collaborative projects (Deep Traum, Sergie Rezza et al) and return to Possible Future for a its sophomore effort. This follows up Leonel Castillo's inaugural release. Featuring the deeply hypnotic tribalism of "Streets At Night" (part 1) which gets an added dose of trance induction on the Traumer 2D2 remix up next - let's face it, this guy knows a thing or two about rhythm! On the flip, its 12 minutes of pure life affirming bliss on the epic "Streets At Night" (part 3) but they save the best for last on the second wave Detroit influenced techno-soul of "Knocked Out".

Test 3
Review: Veteran Italian producer Donato Dozzy and California's Tin Man are old pals, with the latter having first remixed the former way back in 2011. Here, the two join forces for a voyage into acid-flecked late night science for Absurd's ever excellent Acid Test series. "Test 7" sets the tone, delivering a hypnotic, heads-down journey into deep, stripped-back acid house. While it's the EP's most obviously floor-friendly moment, there's something far more thrilling about the bubbling, beatless electronics of "Test 2" and "Test 3". The latter, doused in minimal techno atmospherics, is intensely beautiful in its warm, melodic simplicity.

Down With The Bass (6:15)
Review: Robert Drewek vs Tomie Nevada's 'Time 4 More' EP was originally released on Unleash Records in 2005. Nine years on and Rawax are reissuing it on black wax and the tunes sound as good as ever. 'While He's Away' is a slick blend of garage-infused house drums and warm synth pulses with catchy vocal samples that bring a hint of old school. On the flip is 'Down With the Bass' which flips the script with a stripped back and militant but silky groove, dubby pads and a head's down vibe that really hypnotises.

Review: Derrick Thompson is back under his Drivetrain alias and steering another various artists release on his own Soiree label carrying real-deal underground house and techno from his home base in the Motor City. Thompson kicks off with 'Spin The Record', a jacking, tracky slab of metallic pressure which will work wonders in the mix with all kinds of gear. Jay Strata is up next with 'Heart Strings', a plush slice of machine soul schooled in the Detroit approach. Teknobrat brings something a little spicier but no less classically informed, while DJ Mourad completes the set with an edgy, loopy affair to send synapses into overdrive.

The Paronomasiac - "Chill Haze" (5:59)
Metropolitan Soul Museum - "Sun Sun" (6:21)
Review: Well over a decade after emerging out of the Edmonton club scene, Normals Welcome has finally put together a compilation of sorts. The simply titled Various 01 gathers together tracks from four analogue-loving production talents. ESB kicks things off with "Words For Us", a warming deep house shuffler full of dreamy chord progressions and intergalactic electronics. Ambien Baby doffs a cap to early ambient house classics via the soft focus beats, echo-laden noises and gentle melodies of "AB2", while the Paranomasiac (try saying that while drunk) takes a trip into deep electro pastures on the rather tasty "Chill Haze". Finally, Metropolitan Soul Museum goes all ambient techno via the sweat-soaked drum machine rhythms and psychedelic acid lines of "Sun Sun".

Review: French label Sounds Benefit pool resources once more with four different artists for this innovative new tech house wax. Pager Records co-creator Phil Evans opens up with a wear but fist clenching tech grinder with wigged out effects and crisp, snappy drums. Marco Bley aka Def Engine then serves up an edit of 'Escape Moot' thats driving and warm with a playful little chord vamp sure to get hands in the air. Review: The 5th release from Rothmans pays homage to legendary Argentinean defender Alberto Tarrantini and to mark this 5th release Rothmans have provided a team sheet to rival even that infamous 1982 World Cup squad. First up we have a welcome return to the label from Timothy J Fairplay who featured back alongside Toni Schumacher at the start of the year. This time around he brings us some spaced out Chicago flavour in the guise of 'The Third Season'. On the Flip side we have a welcome addition to the Rothmans squad in Max Essa, and the Tokyo resident brings us nothing but silky moves with a dark taste of the Orient with his aptly named "Stereoscapledmysexpool". Coming up the flanks we have tracks from Al Gobi and Tommy Walker 3 who bring some dark deep spacey vibes with wacked out basslines that really bring this 5th release to the boil!

Living Is Serious Business (Life acapella) (9:39)
Living Is Serious Business (Carl Craig remix) (7:05)
Review: Given that he's always approached life with a cheery gusto, there's something rather ironic about Tim 'Love' Lee being involved in making a track called "Living Is Serious Business". Happily, he has man-of-the-moment Aaron 'Fit' Siegel by his side. The duo's original version is something of a trippy, late-night treat, with dubbed-out keys and percussive flourishes riding a dark Detroit bassline and fizzing, Motor City techno groove. It sounds like something that the brothers Fett would release on Sex Tags Mania, which is definitely a bonus in our book. Carl Craig does a sterling job on his flipside remix, retaining some of the original's eccentricity while adding a sweet melodiousness and production polish all of his own.

Review: Reheat kicks off with a four-tracker of punchy, trance-powered tech house from a cast of promising up and comers making waves in the past year or so. Frank A sets the tone in no uncertain terms with the stomping 'My Thoughts Are Tangled', tapping into that early 90s Harthouse sound with ease. Troy goes for some big leads and acidic bass on his own trance-tech cut 'Deribass', while 4D opts for slinkier, moodier strains of the sound on 'Highland King'. Nay finishes the record off with the growling bass of 'Ruffians Are Best Avoided', a proper naughty joint for when you want the crowd to get down low.

First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

Juan Atkins' remix of 'Someone' by Killer Loop takes up residence on the A-side of this three tracker, all swirling, warm pads and spiralling filters, the percussion almost leaning towards disco with its syncopated handclaps, although the overall effect is as shiny and futuristic as you would expect from this Detroit legend. Flip it over for Terry Brookes' 'Breaking Cycles', a calm spoken word narration providing a meditational mantra to accompany the chugging house foundations, full of gentle tease. Lawrence - "Hawser" (6:14)
Joey Anderson - "Human Kind" (6:21)
Takuya Matsumoto - "Three Flowers" (5:42)
R/K - "Desired Spring" (6:25)
Review: Short Attention Records makes a welcome return here with a new drop of wax that fits the label head into its roots in deep techno sound worlds. This one takes the form of a various artists' EP crafted with an intake feel for cosy floors and who better to kick off in that vibe than the revered Lawrence whose 'Hawser' is a groovy and melodious track. Next, New Jersey don Joey Anderson sets a slow and deep tone with 'Human Kind' which has moody vocals and Japanese artist Takuya Matsumoto follows with 'Three Flowers', a more potent and driving cut with a fine acid bassline. Rounding off the EP is 'Desired Spring' by R/K, a loop-driven deep house gem designed for both listening and dancing.

Modern Underground Music V1
Monty Luke - "Through The Galaxies"
Fhloston Paradigm - "Chasing Rainbows"
Artie Strongman - "Impressed To Dress"
The Carter Bros - "Ritual Business"
Kuru - "The Draconian Hybrids"
Review: Detroit based label Black Catalogue deliver a compilation of deep and delicate music for their third release. Label boss Monty Luke opens with "Through The Galaxies", serving up some curvy Detroit house, riding on a current of dipping percussive notes and squelching pads. Fhloston Paradigm's "Chasing Rainbows" gives the impression of a live recording, with lots of rugged drum notes, wailing synthesisers and oceanic textures. The Carter Brothers' "Ritual Business" is a more typical house affair, complete with straight four-four pattern, trance soaked pads and rolling drum work. "The Draconian Hybrids" by Kuru closes the EP with horror-house synthesisers that crawl out of a messy rhythm, leaving its listener with a distinct feeling of dread.

Elbee Aka The Prince Of Dance Music - "Len's House" (4:57)
SAT - "Yaphet" (6:28)
MLiR & Arnau Obiols - "Calanda" (7:11)
Review: Jerome Sydenham's Ibadan imprint is back with the fourth volume in the Leads & Bites series, presenting an exciting selection of soon-to-be timeless dancefloor favorites. Chilean producer Massiande follows up releases on Freerange and Phonica with the NYC basement bounce of 'Mainline' and its familiar vocal samples, while The Prince Of Dance aka Elbee Bad gets deep down and dirty on 'Len's House'. Over on the flip, S.A.T. (Sydenham, AYBEE and Trent) team up for a hypnotic trip into the aether on 'Yaphet' and finally some low slung Balearic flavour courtesy of Swedish duo MLiR teaming up with Arnau Obils (aka Velmondo) on 'Calanda'.

Miagma - "Regional Transit" (5:27)
Jeremy Meeks - "Nu Korea" (5:57)
T Margos - "5222" (8:24)
S Channel - "Opel Mantra" (2:54)
Review: There's rather a lot going on throughout this admirably varied four-tracker from the Blorp camp. Take Magma's on-point opener, "Regional Transit", for example: it begins as a straight-up bouncy techno slammer, before morphing into a saucer-eyed, breakbeat-driven tribute to the early days of British rave midway through. The track that follows, Jeremy Meeks' "New Korea", is a dreamy, languid and pleasingly melodic chunk of rolling retro-futurist deep house bliss, while T Margoss's contribution, "5222" brilliantly joins the dots between deep space acid house and no-nonsense techno. In this context, the metallic, post hip-hop beats and aqueous riffs of S Channel's "Opel Mantra" make perfect sense.

Calling You Out (Josh Wink Paradise Interretation) (7:29)
Review: Miles Atmospheric (real name Miles Sagnia) is a UK-based DJ, producer and label curator at Atmospheric Existence Recordings. He made his debut on the esteemed Bedrock imprint with "Calling You Out" being featured on label chief John Digweed's recent Quattro III mix. The original version is a slinky and hypnotic journey into the aether, as a backdrop to The Apparition's haunting monologue. The rework on the B side comes from legend Josh Wink (Ovum Recordings) and in fact it was his Paradise Dub that was featured on the aforementioned mix by Digweed, here reinterpreted as an ever more entrancing moment to losing yourself under the strobe lights.

Something Like That (Moody mix) (6:27)
Review: Jeff Mills and the Zanza 21 project have been workmen away on this new one for sometime. It is an accumulation of ideas that take jazz principles and apply them to electronic music, or more specifically the theory that "music is most useful at the point when it touches the soul of the listener, until then, it's just sound." As such Jeff layers up his acoustic and electronic instruments - all of which he plays himself - into star gazing tunes with rich astral melodies and big, bulky grooves that are easy to attach yourself to but hard to forget. This is the first of many releases that are already done and dusted, so keep your eyes peeled for more.

Nail - "Pad On" (7:04)
Trixie, Connor Male, Thoma Bulwer - "Impromptune" (6:29)
Trixie - "Restless Sculptures" (6:01)
Review: Mental health charity label Serenity keeps it sophisticated with its sixth outing and once again donates all proceeds to charity this time Young Minds. It is underground house mainstay and DiY Discs legend Nail who steps up first with a much more breezy and balmy sound than you would expect but it sure is lush. 'Pad On' slips into his more usual and driving house sound but with swirling pads up top for summery refinement. Trixie, Connor Male & Thoma Bulwer then get deep and late night with their punchy 'Impromptune' while Trixie's solo cut 'restless sculptures' is a jacked-up and percussive number that leans into techno.
