Review: Following the runaway success of their Mercury Music Prize nominated 2014 debut album, Jungle moved to Los Angeles to record the follow-up. It didn't work out for a variety of musical and personal reasons, so they headed back to London and recorded "For Ever" instead. While some of the lyrics reflect on their musical and personal issues during that time, the resultant songs are as soulful, polished and jaunty as you'd expect. Check, for example, the sun-kissed disco-pop of "Heavy California", the sumptuous lo-fi soul shuffle of "Cherry", the head-nodding grooves and lyrical melancholy of "Happy Man" and the grandiose, bittersweet brilliance of "House In LA".

Review: A little slice of rock history for RSD 2025, taken from the encore from US indie faves The Killers' encore at New York's Madison Square Garden on October 1, 2022, when a certain Mr Springsteen joined them to Boss proceedings. We get versions of two of Springsteen's calling cards - 'Badlands' from his Darkness on the Edge of Town album, often cited as a proto-punk classic - and the ubiquitous 'Born To Run', with The Killers' raucous 'Dustland', seemingly heading up and up in intensity without ever quite hitting the ceiling, as the meat in the musical sandwich. The clear parallels between both acts are laid bare, as is the spontaneity and excitement of a true one off moment.

Review: Lany frontman Paul Klein leave us in precious little doubt there that he's lovelorn - almost every song on this self-titled record bemoans some melancholic development in his romantic life, set to a cinematic soundscape that's equally beholden to the synth-starred soundscapes of the '80s and modern R&B. Luckily for all and sundry however, these plaintive and potent laments find a way to alchemically transform base angst into audial gold, arriving on a cinematic plateau in which the dislocation of the modern era is subverted to form a bittersweet party soundtrack looking likely to last the remaining days of summer at the very least.

Review: MJ Lenderman first came to prominence as the guitarist in indie rock group Wednesday, which is fronted by his girlfriend Karly Hartzman. Hartzman used her platform and the interviews she was getting to champion her boyfriend MJ Lenderman's solo music and even put out a tweet saying he was looking for a label. Since then, he has gone on to become one of the most loved indie rock singers in the world right now. His rise to fame started in earnest with Rat Saw God in 2022 but went stratospheric with Manning Fireworks. The Asheville, North Carolina guitarist-songwriter has taken Americana music to new heights and through his slacker rock spirit managed to bridge the gap between indie and Americana. Lenderman's voice can make your heart flutter and his lyrics have a grim, Bukowski-esque appeal. On 'Joker Lips', he sings: "Draining cum from hotel showers / Hoping for the hours to pass a little faster." Meanwhile, 'She's Leaving You' is god-tier songwriting and easily one of the strongest singles of 2024.

With the Jeffrey Lewis & The Voltage band in-tow, the album carries on in the rambling sharp-witted, irreverent style that he's known for. Afterall with the album cover, he's nakedly re-staged The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan cover to prove he's "even more" freewhellin than Bob!, so you can understand that Lewis isn't taking life too seriously. The chorus to 'Sometimes Life Hits You' is "Ow! F*ck that hurt!". And 'Just Fun' is a playful, self deprecating ode to dating, whereby getting the jokes in about himself before someone else does he sounds stronger and more comfortable in his skin than any macho man ever would.
